What a pleasure it is to see Kiyoshi Kurosawa in his Hong Sangsoo period. The typically prolific filmmaker is having an especially verdant 2024: his medium-length Chime debuted at Berlinale to strong notices; Serpent’s Path, a remake of his 1998 feature, opens in France this June; and September 27 brings the Japanese release of a new horror feature, Cloud. Ahead of this, there’s a 30-second preview and two posters.
As previously reported, Cloud stars The Boy and the Heron‘s Masaki Suda as Ryosuke Yoshii, “an enigmatic young man who tries to make money by reselling shrewdly obtained goods on the internet under the pseudonym ‘Ratel.'” Kurosawa expanded upon this by saying,
“In the obscure corners of modern-day Japan, violent incidents sometimes occur for seemingly no reason whatsoever. When the causes are investigated, it becomes apparent that a system of sorts exists through which petty grudges and frustrations are accumulated...

With "Avengers: Endgame" behind us and Chris Evans having retired from the Marvel Cinematic Universe until further notice, we can all agree that "Captain America: The First Avenger" is the best Steve Rogers solo film, right? From its character work to its action sequences and a rousing score by the legendary Alan Silvestri, director Joe Johnston's WWII adventure is a top-tier MCU movie. While it may lack the visceral melees that the Russo Brothers brought to its sequels, "The First Avenger" delivers more than enough whiz-bang thrills and Brooklyn attitude to make up the difference (that and its politics are much less confused than those of "The Winter Soldier").
Johnston's superhero picture also boasts what is still one of the McU's most distinguished casts, pairing Evans with Hayley Atwell, Tommy Lee Jones, Sebastian Stan, Hugo Weaving, Stanley Tucci, Toby Jones, and Dominic Cooper. Even Natalie Dormer, David Bradley,...

NAUSICAÄ Of The Valley Of The Wind (1984) is the only Miyazaki film ever screened at Cannes.
In 1997, to mark the occasion of its 50th edition, the Cannes Film Festival awarded a special Palme des Palmes to Ingmar Bergman. Afterward, and since 2002, it has also attributed the Honorary Palme d'Or to film artists in honor of their esteemed careers. Until now, the prize has gone to directors, producers and actors such as Catherine Deneuve, Manoel de Oliveira, and Agnès Varda, among many others. This year, however, the festival will award its first Palme d'Or to animated cinema and a group rather than an individual. The honoree is Studio Ghibli, cofounded by Hayao Miyazaki, Toshio Suzuki, and the dear departed Isao Takahata. This comes after The Boy and the Heron won the studio its second Oscar and breaks with American dominance over these Honorary awards in the past few years.

Hayao Miyazaki’s Oscar-winning anime The Boy and the Heron floated to an easy second-weekend win at China’s theatrical box office, earning $12.8 million from Friday to Sunday, according to data from Artisan Gateway. The Studio Ghibli blockbuster has now earned $93.8 million in China, with local ticketing app Maoyan projecting that it will soon sail past the $100 million mark.
Miyazaki has previously suggested that The Boy and the Heron will be his last feature — but the 82-year-old anime legend has publicly retired twice before, only to eventually return to his drawing table. In any case, Studio Ghibli will continue to be a presence at China’s multiplexes. The fabled company has been steadily rereleasing Miyazaki’s back catalog over recent years. Next up is Howl’s Moving Castle (2004), scheduled for wide release in the country on April 30. Jack Ma’s Alibaba Pictures is also at work on creating an immersive Studio Ghibli exhibition in Shanghai.

Part two of “Chucky” Season 3 is underway, with last night’s midseason premiere kicking off Chucky’s continued bid for the White House while dealing with a new aging affliction. The midseason premiere also delivered on series creator Don Mancini’s tease of a Chucky vs M3GAN showdown, just not in the way you’d expect.
In “Death Becomes Her,” Chucky (voiced by Brad Dourif) wallows over his mortality (when he’s not murdering people), which includes moping about in bed or watching TV. His channel surfing leads him to a string of killer doll horror movies playing, and Chucky’s commentary on his potential rivals will leave you in stitches.
The first film Chucky flips through is 2016’s The Boy, featuring the creepy but prim doll Brahms. After a brief scene of Brahms being cared for by his mother, Chucky dismisses this particular rival with “what a fucking joke.

The Hamilton Jewish Film Festival is looking for another cinema to host its event after the Playhouse Cinema pulled its venue rental over “security and safety concerns” amid the Israel-Gaza conflict.
The film festival was to have run from April 7 to 9 in Hamilton, Ontario at the Playhouse Cinema until the movie theater took the decision to backtrack on those plans.
“After receiving numerous security and safety related emails, phone calls, and social media messages, the Playhouse Cinema reached a difficult decision to postpone the Hamilton Jewish Federation’s venue rental. On Saturday, March 16, our decision to postpone this venue rental was reached amid security and safety concerns at this particularly sensitive time,” the Playhouse Cinema said in a statement.
The Hamilton Jewish Film Festival, presented in part by the Hamilton Jewish Federation, on its website said the event “will continue at a new date and location,” with plans to be announced in the future.

The animated category seemed at first glance to be wide open, with Hayao Miyazaki’s critically acclaimed film The Boy and The Heron leading the pack by only the tiniest of margins. Miyazaki faced strong competition on home turf from the local entry Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget, the latest and only the second stop-motion in the popular franchise from Bristol’s much-loved Aardman Animations.
Both films were up against the might of Hollywood, in the shape of Pixar’s not-much-loved family film Elemental , which premiered at Cannes, and Sony’s Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, believed to be the most likely winner, furthering the studio’s commitment to cutting-edge animation and proving an unlikely franchise of its own with is use of myriad styles to reflect the kaleidoscopic nature of the multiverse.

A funny thing happened on the way to the presumed two-horse awards-season race between 2023 toon feature juggernauts. Netflix’s Nimona picked a fight today with Gkids’ Hayao Miyazaki hit The Boy and the Heron and Sony’s global smash Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, scoring a leading nine Annie Awards nominations. The others managed seven noms apiece.
All three are up for the marquee Best Feature prize along with Toho’s anime Suzume, which also landed seven Annie noms, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem from Paramount and Nickelodeon Film, which got six.
Notably missing from the top toon feature race is Disney/Pixar’s Elemental, which also scooped six nominations from Asifa-Hollywood. Meanwhile, Universal/Illumination The Super Mario Bros. Movie — the No. 2 film of 2023, which plumbed $1.36 billion worldwide — was clogged up with just a single Annie nom for Jack Black’s voice work as the villainous Bowser.

Genre icons Dee Wallace – whose credits include The Hills Have Eyes, The Howling, Cujo, and Critters – and Felissa Rose – who will always be remembered for playing Angela in Sleepaway Camp – have signed on to star in the horror film The Boy from Below alongside Richie Ramone, who was the drummer for The Ramones from 1983 to 1987. Directed by Tory Jones, The Boy from Below is described as being a “retelling” of Jones’ 2017 film The Wicked One (which previously received a sequel titled Wicked Ones).
Jones had this to say about the project: “In 2014, I set out to create a new slasher character reminiscent of the horror heavyweights of films past. This would lead to the creation of The Wicked One, a corrupted teen who transforms into a hulking psychopath in a scarecrow mask. This holiday weekend saw Vincent Chase return to theaters with Aquaman landing in first place and his highly anticipated turn in Ferrari still to come on Christmas Day. Sadly for the Medellín star and his Entourage, Aquaman landed with a thud while Ferrari isn’t expected to make much of a mark.
Yesterday saw Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom heading to an underwhelming $30 million 3 day debut. Well, it appears even that number was a bit of a pipe dream as the king of Atlantis is seeing a revised weekend of $28.1 million with its 4 day expected to hit just shy of $40 million. In his review, our own Mel Valentin described Alexander Payne's The Holdovers as an award-worthy film, and the Dfw Film Critics Association (of which I am a member) agree, naming it Best Picture of 2023. My fellow critics named The Boy and the Heron Best Animated Film and Anatomy of a Fall Best Foreign Language Film. As for actors, Cillian Murphy was cited for his performance in Oppenheimer, Lily Gladstone for her performance in Killers of the Flower Moon, with...

William Brent Bell (The Boy, Separation) stepped into the director’s chair for Orphan: First Kill, a prequel film that solidified Esther’s killer icon status. The filmmaker revealed that he’s actively developing a follow-up, ensuring Esther’s killer hijinks will continue.
“We’re developing a third one now. The franchise’s rulebook has been opened up to where anything is possible,” Bell said in an interview with THR. “And knowing where we are in the process already, I’m extremely excited about the twists and turns that we have in store.”
The prequel, written by David Coggeshall, saw Isabelle Fuhrman reprising the role of Esther thanks to clever production trickery.
In Orphan: First Kill, “Esther’s terrifying saga continues in this thrilling prequel to the original and shocking horror hit, Orphan. After orchestrating a brilliant escape from an Estonian psychiatric facility, Esther travels to America by impersonating the...

Exclusive: Sony Pictures Entertainment in a competitive situation has won the theatrical distribution deals for two mega Apple Original Films movies –the George Clooney and Brad Pitt feature Wolfs and the Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum title Project Artemis.
The news comes on the heels of Apple Original Films’ Ridley Scott-directed Napoleon rolling toward $200M worldwide via its distribution pact with Sony.
Both movies, developed and produced by Apple Original Films, will receive a global theatrical window before streaming worldwide on AppleTV+. Napoleon opened on Nov. 22 and has a 45-day theatrical window. While no theatrical release date has been set for Wolfs and Project Artemis, it would not be shocking if both land 2024 spots in an exhibition marketplace that’s starving for project.
The deal also returns Spider-Man franchise filmmaker Jon Watts, who is the director of Wolfs, to the Sony Culver City studio which saw his Spider-Man: No Way Home...

The fact that Warners’ Barbie so dominated the Critics Choice Award nominations that were announced on Wednesday morning — it landed a record 18 noms, five more than the next-highest scorers, Universal’s Oppenheimer and Searchlight’s Poor Things, which had 13 each — is obviously very interesting. But does it mean that Barbie is truly that much more popular among Cca members than anything else, or is it just more reflective of the fact that there are categories at this awards show that don’t exist elsewhere but inherently benefit Barbie (e.g. best comedy, best young actor/actress, a best song category without a cap on noms from one film, etc.)? Only time will tell.
However, several specific Critics Choice noms, or lack thereof, are more obviously significant.
In the best picture category, two of the three non-English-language films that have performed extremely well this season — all three earned best drama picture...

Steven Spielberg has broken his silence on the Oct. 7 Hamas terrorist attack on Israel.
In a statement shared by the USC Shoah Foundation, which was founded by Spielberg in 1994, the Oscar-winning filmmaker said, “I never imagined I would see such unspeakable barbarity against Jews in my lifetime.”
His comments come as the organization continues its initiative to collect testimonies from survivors of the ongoing Israel-Hamas war and Holocaust survivors and witnesses.
“The team at the USC Shoah Foundation are leading an effort that will ensure that the voices of survivors will act as a powerful tool to counter the dangerous rise of antisemitism and hate,” Spielberg said.
The director noted that “both initiatives … seek to fulfill our promise to survivors: that their stories would be recorded and shared in the effort to preserve history and to work toward a world without antisemitism or hate of any kind. We must remain...

Danny Perkins made waves in the British film industry back in 2018 when he left his long-time position as CEO of StudioCanal UK — a tenure that had seen him oversee major and beloved hits including Paddington 1 & 2, Tinker Tailer Soldier Spy and Shaun the Sheep Movie — to set up his own film and TV production company.
Elysian Film Group, which he launched with producer Kate Solomon (United 93), in early 2020 unveiled its distribution arm, backed by minority investment from CAA (the giant’s first investment in a U.K. distributor). The timing wasn’t great, however, coming less than a month before the first pandemic lockdown.
It was, understandably, a slow start on both the production and distribution front. But 2023 has seen the company — a nimble operation of just four staffers, including Perkins (who brings partners on board for big releases) — make some major noise. First up, it’s biggest in-house film to date,...

Austin Jewish Film Festival director David Finkel was hosting a visiting Israeli student in his home when Hamas terrorists infiltrated Israel and murdered more than 1,300 people on Oct. 7. The student learned the next day that his grandfather had been killed, and his grandmother and uncle were kidnapped. It’s just one of the many personal connections that people associated with the festival, now in its 21st year, have to the horrors of that day, and to the ongoing fighting in Gaza.
There’s a cliche for times like these: “The show must go on.” But what about now? And what Finkel and the other festival organizers ultimately decided was: especially now.
“One of the conversations was: Is it appropriate for us to go ahead?” Finkel recalls. “And the prevailing feeling was that you don’t want to let the terrorists win, essentially. You want to continue living your life — which...

Throughout horror genre history, there have been numerous examples of characters crossing over into one another's universes, continuity, and canon. For one thing, horror was the first genre to birth a cinematic universe long before it became a buzzworthy term, thanks to Universal Pictures' "Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man" in 1943. Fourteen years after Drake broke through with his So Far Gone mixtape, public reaction to his new projects has grown predictable. The Toronto rapper/singer will run up numbers on Spotify and Apple Music because, well, he’s the king of streaming. A social-media war will inevitably break out over the quality of his music, his reputed softness in comparison to past street-hardened GOATs, and his beefs with sundry bold-faced rivals. In recent months, those online debates have grown coarse and self-righteous, thanks to an unfortunate lyrical shift towards fellating...

London Film Festival returns for its 67th outing this year from the 4th – 15th October and, much like the last couple of years of the festival, the main bulk of the screenings will take place in venues across London with a selection of the programme dubbed Lff on Tour screening in partner venues country-wide. In addition to these in-venue screenings, a collection of featured films will also be available for free during the festival’s scheduled dates, with the festival’s nominated short film competition titles also available online on the BFI Player, which means that even if you’re unable to get down to any of the in-person screenings you can still get a taster of what’s on offer.

"If we look closer, what we find in the darkness might surprise us..." Max has unveiled an official trailer for an animated short film streaming this fall called Peter and The Wolf. Yes, another version of this classic story, this time coming from the mind of U2's Bono. Featuring music and narration by Gavin Friday, and artwork based on original illustrations by Bono. After the success of Apple's The Boy, the Mole, the Fox, and the Horse, everyone is trying to make more films like this. The short transforms Sergei Prokofiev's classic symphony into a film that touches on themes of growing up, loss, courage, and our relationship with nature. The project was originally developed back in 2003 by Gavin Friday and Bono in support of Irish Hospice Foundation (Ihf), a national charity supporting those facing dying, death and bereavement. 30 years later they've got a final version ready.

In cinema, few names are as iconic as Hayao Miyazaki, and his latest adventure carries the weight of expectation. Drawing inspiration from the mysticism of Japanese folklore and grounded in the pain of personal loss, The Boy and the Heron, which opened the 2023 Toronto Film Festival, is a visual spectacle that rekindles the art of 2D animation in an era dominated by the digital.
It is a bit of a mixed bag as there are moments of beauty along with narrative missteps. From Studio Ghibli’s signature heartwarming touches to a plot that might perplex, this visual stunner undeniably reaffirms Miyazaki’s status as one of the world’s most beloved filmmakers.
The film starts with Mahito Maki (Soma Santoki) waking up to the sound of warning sirens. There is a fire in the town hospital that belongs to his mother. He tries to help put out the fire, but...
