There's not really any twists or anything but when you watch a movie like this you pretty much know what your are getting into.
cosmo_tiger13 July 2015
"This is my house, the only thing that badge will get you in here is a slit throat." Mason (Cain) is a cop at the top of his game. After finally tracking down and arresting Victor Abbott (Wight) he moves on to the next criminal. When there turns out to not be enough evidence to hold him Victor is released and wants revenge. The next time Mason finds him Victor is standing over his dead wife. Now it is Mason's turn for revenge and after deliberately getting arrested he has Victor right where he wants him. This is a movie that is pretty much exactly what you would expect. The movie is really a B-rate action movie that plays off every cliché in the book. All that said the movie is pretty entertaining and is watchable. There are not really any twists or anything that isn't unexpected but again, when you go to watch a movie like this you pretty much know what your are getting into. Overall, nothing terrible but if you've seen one of these movies you have seen them all. I give this a C+.

Clumsy execution and repetitive story, Vendetta won't bring your time back
quincytheodore13 June 2015
Warning: Spoilers
While having distinct cast with Dean Cain and Paul Wight (Big Show) Vendetta feels terribly mundane. It follows a straightforward plot of a renegade cop who does everything he can to exact his revenge. The main problem isn't the plot itself, but how the execution falters in almost every action sequences. It just looks amateurish as punches and kicks barely land, while the choreography consists of random flailing or pushing. The poor presentation is incompatible with the gritty mood it tries to build and the film ends up running around in circle like the on-screen inmate.

Mason (Dean Cain) is a detective in feud with crime mogul Victor (Paul Wight). After shoddy first act where development feels forced, Mason deliberately incarcerates himself to the same prison Victor does time. The film repeats this hardened cop gimmick too much, almost the entire movie portrays him fighting and outsmarting Victor and the corrupt warden. This get repetitive very fast as events happen with little to no build up.

At some points the screenplay almost literally repeats itself by rehearsing the same scene, I even wondered whether this wasn't already done fifteen minutes ago. There's no intelligent move on Mason's part, honestly his plan relies far heavily on coincidence and the others' stupidity. Dean Cain is stuck on his Batman impression with overdose of angst while Paul Wight is just not convincing on the antagonist role aside from his large physique.

The weakest link must be the lackluster cinematography, Vendetta's action is timid and feeble. Motions look awkward and editing is jittery, it resembles WWE match with fake blood. Character would swing and miss, yet his enemy would fall, in the wrong way. Gun effect is poor as well, as though they plaster flash effect with lots of strawberry jam filled prosthetic for blood substitution.

None of the action looks genuine. With good presentation Vendetta could've been a decent action, but seeing it's hampered by obvious flaws, it'd be better to serve your time somewhere else.

Far from great but you get what you expect
Seth_Rogue_One24 September 2015
A low budget action b-movie extravaganza, nothing more and nothing less and it doesn't pretend like it's something more either so it works if you're in the right mind-frame and don't expect more than that.

All I wanted to see was Dean Cain as the good guy going vigilante-style and kicking some bad guys asses, and that's exactly what I got.

Could it have done without one or two twists? Yeah, could it have been a little tighter edited? Yeah, that too but overall a fairly entertaining movie.

I'm not a wrestling fan so I have no idea who 'The Big Show' is but he was better than you're average wrestler turned actor, at least in the role he was playing which was just a big bully bad-ass with a bad attitude.

I don't think he'll ever become as versatile as say 'The Rock' but hey, as far as this movie goes he did what was asked for, being the menacing bad guy.

It sort of has the feel of an Asylum-movie at some times (the movie company not the institution) but if it was an Asylum-movie it would be one of the better ones at least.

Yeah nothing amazing on any level but it served it's purpose.

If you like WWE you will like this.
minumero31 August 2015
I haven't watched pro/fake wrestling since I was a child, so this movie was blah at best. It was completely unbelievable in almost every aspect.

I must say that Dean Cain actually did a good job acting though. Too bad there was nothing else worthy. This review requires no spoiler alert because you already know everything that is going to happen :]

If you like to make a drinking game out of scrutinizing movies for their errors, make sure you have plenty to drink! But watch out because there are actually some very gory scenes for a B action movie.

I did give it a 5 because it was kind of entertaining - I didn't feel the need to stop watching. To sum it up... If you really like WWE you will really like this. You'll probably like it if your IQ is below 100 as well.

Could be worse.
midnightmosesuk27 January 2021
Nothing special here, a pretty pedestrian film really. Dean Cain and The Big Show (I'd never heard of him before this film) are fairly entertaining though.

The Big Show is enormous, I find it hard to believe that anyone could grow to such a size. I am really amazed.

Warning: Spoilers
To cut the long story short, I watched the movie by dividing it into 20 minutes episodes. It was unbearable after 15 to 20 minutes of continuous stupid acting. At least they should have chosen a better lead character "Hero of the Movie" to get 1 star more :P He was chubby, amateur in fighting, acting and was full of amusing loose ends. Lol The BIG show was way too strong for that poor chubby fellow and noway was capable of fighting stunts. And please do let me know that how on earth can we get all the power, stamina and strength by having a couple of push ups??? The Warden seemed to be the greatest "fail" on Earth who never gets to control neither the Big show nor the Hero...

Please do not try this at home or in theater :D

One action scene after another
Lior3412 April 2019
The film was perfectly summarized by The Hollywood Reporter which said "the sort of B-movie violent actioner that makes you feel your testosterone level rising as you watch it". The film had a minimal plot which was used as a glue connecting all the fight scenes. For the most part, it was one action scene after another, and they were good. I felt like they were well-made and tense enough to be on the entertaining side.

I was surprised though to see The Soska Sisters making a film outside of horror. I generally think they succeeded at their first attempt. I recommend the film for those seeking a mindless and violent action film, and less for those seeking any meaningful story.

'Vendetta' is a pleasingly old-school head-knocker!
Weirdling_Wolf28 January 2021
Any steel-thewed cop vs. Elephantine goon actioner including the trusty workhorse line: 'You should have killed me when you had the chance!' has the potential to be an enjoyably thick-eared DTV time-waster, and happily we soon thug-deep in Seagal/JCVD wronged cop turning super wrong-headed jailbird with brooding Det. Danvers (Dean Cain) ferociously going head to pectorals with towering, roid-raging rapscallion Victor Abott (Paul 'The Big Show' Wight') in the Soska Sisters pleasingly old-school head-knocker 'Vendetta', with its myriad knuckle-dragging, jaw-busting fights culminating orgiastically in one bodaciously bloody, free-for-all prison yard riot! The stone-faced anti-hero Cain is wickedly vengeful as the single-minded, spike-fisted, increasingly sociopathic skell slayer and his towering, Tor Johnson-sized, permanently perspiring nemesis power-grunts his expletive monosyllables with a useful Baritone belligerence. 'Vendetta' is so deliciously 90s the glaring omission of a Hed PE track over one of the gore-slathered Laundry room is an almost unforgivable faux pas! The far from static film has a comfortably familiar aspect and the adrenalized fisticuffs, while not always perfectly executed are reliably plentiful, frequently grisly and should keep any shank-happy fight-freaks distracted until the next Scott Adkins beat-down epic comes out. I went into this with ZERO expectations and happily exited entertained and sometimes that's all I really want from a bruisingly bellicose, gang-banging, plasma-drenched B-movie.

Do yourself a Favour and avoid it
Mr_crowley8124 June 2015
Warning: Spoilers
I attempted to watch this 😂 but I had to turn it off 😩🔫 exactly what I thought it would be like, badly written plot that defies all logic..looked and shot like a really bad TV movie for syfy the look and bland feel of the film makes you doubt the integrity of the directors (who aren't the greatest to start with) on top of that its another horrible offering from WWE films with the Big Show who has the personality of a puppet and It also features the lamest on screen prison riot in film. The big show murders Dean Cain's wife and to exact his revenge Dean who is a cop gets himself put in prison to take down big show. The action is one of its main faults as with any of these direct to DVD action films, it's edit is quick and choppy to make it look rugged and hardcore it looks very amateur, several of the fight scenes are exactly the same as the ones you just saw 15mins ago way to over thought and planned it's almost as if they wait to hit their mark. There isn't much of a cinematography to even brag about. A paper thin plot. Almost stock locations like a warehouse and prison that looks like the same one that gets used for every low budget TV show or film, the ending builds up to a showdown that fizzles out in Min's and looks like every other fight scene you just saw in the film..it really doesn't have a positive and nothing special about this film

I'm a member of the horror community on Instagram so there is another aspect I wanna talk about, The main problem with the film is the directors the Soska twins have achieved this rabid cult following through their shameless self promotion of themselves and these movies that they make are bad Iv'e never saw such over hyped praised directors for really bad films like dead hooker in a trunk, see no evil 2 their spot on ABC's of death two and their uncredited involvement as incestuous twins in the slaughtered vomit dolls part 2. They do not have competent skills or a style and the films are judged by them as people and not for the films, vendetta is just another UN-thrilling entry into the soska twins below mediocre catalogue....avoid it

Great prison movie!!!!
cheyennewight12 June 2015
This was a great movie by the WWE!!! I wasn't expecting much it was quite a surprise. I would recommend this movie to anyone that likes prison based movies. The Big Show did an excellent job portraying a bad guy. Dean Cain is always a good actor. Thank you guys for not letting me down. Dean Cain character went to the extreme to exact his revenge by going to prison to get it. When I first seen the front cover for the movie I thought Big Show was gonna be the good guy, but I was wrong. Can' t wanted t for my boyfriend to watch it. It is most definitely worth buying. There was plenty of action, and it kept me watching and waiting what to happen next.

Surprisingly good
kuuk325 July 2015
The story was formulaic and we have seen it all before. But Dean Cain and Big Show give outstanding performances both. The violence is graphic and at one point Dean was showing that he had the chops to play Batman in another life!

This film does not shy away from the blood and violence. There is very little bad language in it though, if any.

One has to suspend belief a lot though. How Big Show's character can do what he does and how the number of murders goes unnoticed, got stupid. When people are being killed who are not even inmates, the rest of the police should have been investigating. Why a cop was put in general population is another mystery.

My score of 7 is probably higher than the story deserves, but Dean Cain's performance earns it an extra two points and made this a very enjoyable watch.

Not convincing, compelling, intriguing, exciting or cathartic
ginocox-206-33696816 January 2016
"Vendetta" never feels real. It opens with a car "chase" that looks more like a product placement. The police procedures don't seem authentic. The detective's home looks like something he could never afford and the back yard doesn't seem to belong to the rest of the property. A criminal who supposedly is involved in all manner of nefarious activities is set free when one key witness disappears. The prison looks like an abandoned prison with brand new weights in the exercise yard. There is a bright new humidor that sometimes holds cigars and sometimes holds something else. Even the fight scenes, which are usually strong points in WWE films, aren't convincing.

It has a few bright spots, including interesting performances by Michael Eklund as the warden and Matthew MacCaull as a guard. The cinematography is pretty good with decent lighting and steady shots that look like the camera had actually been locked down on a tripod or other support mechanism. There are a couple of nicely executed time-lapse shots. Make-up effects were convincing.

Dean Cain has 139 credits on IMDb, but I've only seen a few of his films. He held his own in dramatic scenes playing opposite Denzel Washington in "Out of Time." But he was in much better shape then and had a convincing role. With a more capable director at the helm, a better screenplay and better action choreography, I might believe that the 2003 Cain could hold his own in a fight against Paul Wight.

We've seen movies about characters who break into prison one way or another to confront an adversary, including "A Law Abiding Citizen," "Face/Off" and "Escape Plan." For such plots to work, the protagonist must have some expectation of eventually escaping or using his incarceration as an alibi. Here, the plot makes the protagonist unsympathetic and fatalistic.

The biggest problem with this film lies in the motivation of the characters. For the story to work, there needs to be a lot of history between the detective and the villain. The villain needs a strong motive to target the detective's family and the attack needs to be particularly loathsome. The plot also needs to make sense. Danvers is a detective. Abbott is locked up with murderers and other violent criminals. Danvers could more easily destroy evidence or persuade a key witness to recant testimony to induce one of the inmates to murder Abbott. Danvers doesn't seem driven by extraordinary circumstances.

None of the motivations, big or small, make much sense. When Danvers learns there is an intruder in his home, he races there and calls his partner instead of sending uniformed officers. Joel pulls a dramatic U-turn and races to the prison to attend to something that could wait until morning. Police need a warrant to arrest somebody, unless they actually witness them commit a crime. Nobody can simply tell a SWAT team to arrest somebody for some crime committed months or years previously.

It's difficult to make revenge plots sympathetic. The protagonist has to have a strong sense of commitment to justice and feel justice has been thwarted, but the movie fails to do this. The protagonist is unsympathetic and uncommunicative. His plan isn't clever. He takes a blunt force approach, but doesn't have unique skills. Along the way, he engages in confrontations with others who had nothing to do with his original motive. We don't see character development. The movie lacks any sort of moral.

Very little seemed convincing. Nothing seemed original, exciting, suspenseful or cathartic.

Terrible
gridoon202425 July 2017
Warning: Spoilers
The Soska Sisters (Jen & Sylvia) made a splash in the horror film scene with "American Mary" (2012), but more recently their careers seem to have taken a down-turn; this is the second consecutive WWE film project (after "See No Evil 2") that they helm. They do inject a lot of blood (literally) into it, but the story is banal, and by the time of the climactic prison riot, it is clear that the whole thing has gotten out of their hands (it's also distressing to see a film directed by two women that's so male-centered, and the only woman in the cast has three lines and then gets gruesomely killed). Dean Cain looks tired and overweight, while the imposing Big Show has trimmed down and is better than expected. Michael Eklund apes (I think) Gary Oldman in "Leon" - he deserves a Razzie award. * out of 4.

Dean Cain in the next Tarantino
dauitsone5 May 2019
The movie is crap. Yeah, crap.

But Dean Cain is a really really good actor. I can't belive I'm writing this. But it's true. Especially in the state he's in during this movie with 60 extra pounds and an unshaved rugged apperance.

Please Quentin, put him in your next movie. That would be awesome to watch.

I swear he would do amazing.

The rest of the crew are terrible. As is the script, the cutting, the effects and everything else.

But watch it just to see if you agree with me on this one.

This one might surprise you...
Robert_duder16 June 2015
Warning: Spoilers
I have this unexplainable soft spot for Dean Cain. I idolized him growing up because of four seasons playing the Man of Steel in Lois and Clark. Since then, his career has been a downward spiral of cheesy straight to video flicks. Still every time he is in something, I feel compelled to watch it although I try to avoid that compulsion. I saw this listed and decided...you know what...why not? Well, here lies Cain's redemption. No I'm not saying its some masterpiece of cinema. But it is inherently reminiscent of Stallone's Lock Up, or The Last Castle or Prison Break and its simply entertaining. It is visceral and violent to a fault, ridiculous as it is dark and twisted. WWE Films might have an unusual reputation but they tend to know how to entertain their core audience. Sometimes that means their script isn't exactly brilliant but it is watchable and fun and the production values are very good and even in the most implausible plot, you tend to believe it and that's what makes Vendetta works. As a writer I saw things in the script I would have done differently that would have improved on it. Dean Cain's character wasn't strong enough physically. I wanted him to be even more of an unstoppable bad ass blinded by rage. But then again it also made him more human and believable to watch him getting his revenge while still getting his licks too.

I really don't think Dean Cain could pull this off. He is anything but visceral and violent and guess what? This might be the best role I have ever seen him. He is believable and wicked and messed up and he fits the cast extremely well. His fight scenes are solid and his high intensity emotions work very well. WWE Superstar Paul Wight (The Big Show as he's known) is no Dwayne Johnson but he is pretty good at this role. He is massive and larger than life and definitely makes a killer villain. I'd love to see him in a mainstream film playing something like Doomsday or a massive physical villain like that. Him and Cain have surprisingly good chemistry and their fights are well choreographed. I feel like Michael Eklund is a little underplayed as the evil Warden. He had the opportunity to really play this role well and he's just a little too laid back however its a decent role and he doesn't get in the way of the main characters or story because this is really all about Dean Cain and Paul Wight's intense rivalry. Supporting cast is good and everyone serves their purpose well.

Vendetta is actually filmed extremely well. Yes certain aspects of it are a little cheesy but entertainment wins out. Anyone who loves a violent action flick with a decent little thriller of a story will be entertained by this. Again, this isn't "amazing" and I would not rush out to buy it or see it more than once but I also wouldn't groan to see it again either. You have to go in with mediocre expectations given the cast, production team and history of both of those things. The Soska Sisters who direct this film are carving a niche for themselves in the indie horror genre and are known for their bloody style but perhaps they can add action thriller to their repertoire. Enjoy this one and while it might be forgettable you'll have fun with it while it lasts. 7/10

Two words will tell you how bad this movie is.
chemor20 November 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Wilhelm Scream. You know the one. It's been in movies since the days of black and white westerns. It's the same scream ol' Captain Wilhelm belted out when his leg was impaled by an Apache arrow. Sadly you have to wait almost 2 hours to hear it, but when you do you'll stop everything else to watch as a guy does a horizontal 720 from a barely landed weak hand punch. Pathetic.

Seriously, worst scene in the movie; when a "hardened", veteran cop continues to fire his gun after the slide has locked in place, then looks at it like "oh, that's why it won't shoot.". Terrible. Just terrible.

Dean Cain at his absolute gritty best
tarbosh220003 October 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Mason "Mace" Danvers (Cain) is a Chicago cop with everything to live for. His wife is expecting their first child, he's excelling in his career, and he's pretty much living the dream. Suddenly, his once-perfect life becomes a nightmare when the super-evil baddie Victor Abbott ('Show) invades his home and brutally slaughters his pregnant wife. Vowing revenge, Mace gets himself locked up in Stonewall prison so he can get close to Victor and his crew. But he gets more than he bargains for when he uncovers a conspiracy that goes all the way to the top. With Mace on the edge, will he get his VENDETTA? It's going to be a "big bad show tonight" as The Big Show faces off against Dean Cain in the battle we've all waited ages to see. Vendetta is the best WWE Films production we've seen to date, and has a lot of good points, mixed in with a couple negatives. The good: the movie is Dean Cain at his absolute best, and it's pretty gritty for him. Cain is out of control as he kills baddie after baddie and has some cool weaponry like spiked brass knuckles to help him along on his journey of revenge. You can see all the fights, and the movie certainly doesn't skimp on the blood, brutality, and violence. It's well-made overall and isn't overly long. It knows its place as a B-movie and anyone expecting anything else might be missing the point.

The Big Show (we could call him Mr. Show, but that might be infringing upon the rights of Bob and David) is essentially a wrestling-style baddie, but perhaps even more evil. He's so maniacally evil, we at one point shouted, "we get it! He's EVIL!" - but that's the thing about these wrestlers being in WWE productions. Even though, as wrestlers, they haven't been in any movies, they have years of experience acting, because that's 99% of what wrestling is. The WWE is now essentially a farm team so they can figure out who goes into their cinematic output. Perhaps The Big Show and others just wanted to act all along; their dream was to be in off-Broadway plays and the legitimate theatre but just did wrestling as a backup plan. We certainly could see Mr. Big Show bellowing "Stella!!!! Stella!!!" in a star turn as Stanley Kowalski in 'Streetcar.

The not-so-good: The movie is probably one of the least original and most clichéd we've seen in some time. There is literally nothing that in any way separates it from similar movies like Death Warrant (1990) or In Hell (2003). Whether that's a dealbreaker is another matter, but almost every prison movie cliché is present and accounted for, much like the lineup when prisoners first arrive at the jail. It's also quite repetitive, which is a seemingly unavoidable trap for prison movies. The whole second half is essentially 1. either Cain or Big Show talks to the warden in his office 2. fight scene 3. Big Show talking to his crew. That's pretty much it. This could have been avoided if Cain's character went into prison later in the movie than he does. If you don't have a problem with clichés and repetition, Vendetta is good, solid fare and has plenty of fine attributes to offset these things.

A tribute to the only character whose motivation made any sense: Will.
lalamcgivern28 June 2018
Warning: Spoilers
This story was written by two 13 year old boys at a sleepover after too many e-numbers. The pitch went like this: This man comes in and shoots the other man, then another man, then the other man, then they fight then they go to prison then they hit each other, then another man is there and he hits the man, then the man stabs the man then he kills the man, then they go to sleep and the next day the man fights the man and the man kills the other man then, then, then... You get the idea.

But Will! WIIIIIIILLLLLLL! So, Will has been working hard for Warden Snyder, you see, and Warden Snyder has noticed his efforts. Some time before the story begins, Warden Snyder has offered Will a part in his dastardly dealings, a small part at first, until Warden Snyder feels like he can trust him with the bigger picture. Will's got a family to support and welcomes the extra work, but as the extent of the Wardens wicked ways reveals itself he becomes disillusioned with his new position. Unable to find a way out without incurring the wrath of the Warden, Will reluctantly continues to play his part.

Poor Will. His undeserved and untimely demise was truly, truly shocking. We should mourn this fine man, God rest his soul. And what of his family? Such a shame.

BUT IT WAS THE FUNNIEST PART OF THE FILM! It was so quick and unexpected that I screamed out loud. This spectacular couple of seconds of cinematic marvel is the reason I've given this four stars instead of three.

Do not miss this movie
jpw-5551310 August 2019
I am starting to become a real fan of WWE movies. This is a good one. Dean Cain is great in the role of a man enraged and out to get those who killed his wife. The bad guys are bad enough so that you want to see them get what is coming to them. The good guy is vulnerable and that adds to the believability of the story. There are some tense moments but you will want to keep watching. The ending is fair and leaves you wanting for a Vendetta II

Unsure what the 1 star reviewers were expecting.
paulilepisto19 June 2019
It is a movie that is good entertainment for a hot summer night when you don't feel like sleeping, but don't want to pay too much attention to anything either, i'm repeating ENTERTAINMENT it is not a "film" its an entertaining movie, it delivers exactly what you would/should expect from it, which is bloody action and fast paced plot that doesn't make much sense if you start thinking about it too much.

It deserves at least 7/10 because it is what it is, acting was pretty good too, i am not professional enough to see a lot of mistakes in it anyways.

The Big Show in the big house.
morrison-dylan-fan23 March 2021
Warning: Spoilers
With them recently doing excellent detailed interviews with fellow film makers at the 2021 online Cine-Excess Film Festival,I felt this was the best time to see a flick from the Soska's. Curious about the sisters doing a non-Horror,I got set to see the vendetta get unleashed.

View on the film:

Revealing during a interview at the 2019 Cine-Excess Film Festival that they signed up to work at WWE Studios,at a time when they had seriously considered quitting film making, due to the challenges in getting productions rolling, directing duo sisters Jen & Sylvia Soska bring their distinctive Body Horror vibes to the Action flick, with the Soska's snapping body modifications into hard-knuckle Action set-pieces, via wonderfully gory close-ups of blood pouring out from the repeatedly smashed open wounds of the prisoners.

Walking round as the biggest heel in the block with (as Michael Cole called them) his "Typewriter-like hands" raised, Paul "The Big Show" Wight gives a delightfully gruff turn as boo-hiss baddie Abbott, who Wight has stomp a mudhole into any fellow inmate who does not follow his orders, as Dean Cain gives Danvers a simmering aggression, which he unleashes as Danvers decides to end his vendetta.

Big show?
kosmasp11 July 2021
Well maybe for some, but I reckon most will not consider the movie itself a big show ... now obviously I'm having some fun with ... wordplay. Paul Wight also known to many as the Big Show in the WWE is one of the main characters at hand here.

The movie itself is nothing you won't expect from an action thriller of its kind. I can only imagine that the Soskas (twin directing sisters) did this for the money, not because they had the idea to do a movie like that. Having said that, I reckon it can be fun to direct something like this. Not having to wonder too much what to do or where to go. The movie practically writes itself.

Not trying to put it down, some will have more fun with this than others of course. And putting TV Clark Kent in here might help too. I've seen him act in other independent productions, so when it is needed he is up to the task. Do not judge him from this one effort here. He can only do so much with the material he is given (as I noted with the directors too - and can be generally applied to this)
