The sense of life is what we do, already
juliancio-wodnik22 August 2014
Unlike in Polish cinema the characters in the movie "Małe stłuczki" / "Little Crashes" are based on the feelings of people, not on their experiences. What we think is more important than what we do - the directors are giving their characters a right to emotions. There is a triangle in the movie - we can say a love triangle, cause one girl is being loved by a man and a girl, but it's she is not returning it back.

The main idea about what these people will do in the movie is less important - they are just packing the old car with the old, unnecessary objects from houses-to-be-abandoned (they do it probably for free) and they go on a market to sell them. The main point is how they are getting to know each other - or how not to do this.

A man, Piotr is left by his wife and she appears only in the pictures she had made, he looses the factory job also - so two roommates, Asia and Kasia, one of which is loving the other secretly - invite him to cooperate.

Asia, central hero from the movie, is behaving like XIX century character from books written in the times of Romanticism - she can feed herself just from the thoughts and seems like she is not living in a material world. The sense of humour of her, and of the situations she creates is very subtle - but movie is closer to drama instead of to the comedy.

The movie - while it was presented in Koszalin- was compared by some critics to mumblecore. In fact, it has some merits of this genre: slowly style, elements of road movie, people in their twenties, thirties looking for their goals - except the cast that here is professional. In "Małe stłuczki" there are no great dramas, as it is written in the title - there are just life crashes that we could survive and go on - like Walt White were saying, after the two planes crash - people from the town, on the ground just survived and kept going on. The truth about life from "Małe Stłuczki" is that there wouldn't be any other sense of life except the sense we can read from how we were living already. If the strongest wish from characters is to die in a beauty way - it means how really lonely they (or we) are. And that's one of the moving moments that's making the movie worth seeing.
