Binge-drinking, binge-killing and Â… binge-kebab-munching!
Coventry12 November 2016
Next to being many other things, "K-Shop" first and foremost is an effectively harsh and confronting satire on England, and particularly how its culture and dignity completely deteriorated in the past two decades. It's abundantly clear that the film fiercely denounces the disgusting (but sadly very realistic and not exaggerated) British binge-drinking tragedies that occur every weekend, as well as all the vulgarities and embarrassment linked to them. But the obviously very cynical and embittered writer/director Dan Pringle simultaneously also criticizes many other shameless vices, most notably how disrespectfully English people treat the immigrants and how they stupidly idolize losers that basically didn't accomplish anything except for appearing in the media (like, for example, the winner of the "Big Brother" reality-TV show). But "K-Shop" is certainly also an insane black comedy and a gorier-than- expected horror/thriller, dealing with a variety of interesting themes including cannibalism, vigilante and modern day Sweeney Todd! Especially considering this is Dan Pringle's long- feature film debut, "K-Shop" definitely exceeded my expectations and – although it's about 30-40 minutes too long – I would label it as one of the more successful and recommendable horror movies to emerge from Britain in the last five years.

Salah Sabir is of Turkish descent, but born and raised in England and a successful student at a prominent London university. He has to interrupt his studies to return home to Bournemouth where his father, a devoted and ambitious kebab shop owner, suffers with his health. Before he properly recovers, Salah's father is killed following a banal dispute with a group of drunken party animals. Salah decides to stay a while and temporarily run the shop, but his contempt and oppressed hatred towards these idiotic binge-drinkers quickly escalates. He accidentally kills an aggressive customer in his deep fryer and sees no other option but to process the cadaver into the special kebab meat recipe! The K-shop becomes a huge hit in the late-night life, and since there are always more than enough imbecilic drunkards entering the shop to irritate Salah, he never runs out of meatÂ… Salah runs the shop for 7 great years, but then he gradually gets into trouble as the number of missing person cases is immense and several people in his surrounding grow suspicious. In case it was Dan Pringle's primary objective to make a social statement, then Â… well Â… he certainly made his point! I'm neither a binge-drinker nor an Englishman, but I felt a surrogate sense of shame throughout nearly the entire movie. There's a massive amount of (stock-) footage depicting people drinking, fighting, misbehaving, vomiting, urinating and even fornicating in public. It's nasty and marginal, but you know it's the truth and that makes it rather depressing. The film isn't entirely flawless, neither. Two hours is definitely too long for this type of movie and it feels as if Pringle easily could have cut or shrunk several sequences and even entire sub plots. The irrelevant and slowly developing romance between Salah and the charming Sarah shouldn't have been included, for instance, especially since it never really goes anywhere concrete, and also the sub plot with his alert weekend helper Malik is quite redundant. The acting performances are terrific and the soundtrack contains a large number of exhilarating and inciting music.

Fancy a kebab?
Stevieboy66627 July 2017
Salah,a student & refugee, inherits a seaside kebab shop when his father dies during an altercation with some drunken yobs. Subjected to constant verbal (much of it racist) and physical abuse Salah ends up killing a violent customer and disposing of his body in his kebabs. He goes on to repeat this several times over. This could have been a simple kill 'em and eat 'em gore movie, it certainly wouldn't be the first. However K-Shop addresses issues such as racism, violence, alcohol abuse & greed (the ambitious & ruthless local night club owner). The movie uses real footage of drunken people fighting, being sick, exposing themselves, having sex, etc, all in public. Sadly an all too familiar sight in towns & cities across Britain come the weekends. Watching the fictional Salah bloodily butcher his victims may prove too much for some viewers but it's the real anti social behaviour caused by alcohol that is truly shocking.

Chilli Sauce?.....
FlashCallahan23 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
A kebab shop owner's son becomes a creative vigilante as he takes grisly revenge on the violent youths who killed his father.....

K-shop's cover sleeve stated that it was the most anticipated horror of 2017. Narrow it down a little to the most awaited Sweeny Todd-esque film set in Bournemouth of 2017, then your on way.

The film centres around Salah, and him inheriting his families fast food shop after his dad dies. Because there were loads of stereotypical drunk Brits shouting at him at the time, Salah decides to kill anyone who appears out of sorts when they enter his place.

Because this would obviously make up for his fathers untimely death. The first act is pretty intense, as we see what Salah is doing to the corpses. Yes, in fact, he's making them into kebabs and planning on just keeping them arm. But then Keith from The Office enters, says something to his friend about conning old people out of money, so he serves then human kebab meat.

But after that, he seems to stop turning the bodies into said meat, and it focuses more on him, and the oppression he encounters on a nightly basis. Now this is all well and good, but the secondary characters are laughable, and add nothing to the narrative. These are characters we are all used to, thanks to the slew of Brit Gangster movies released in the late nineties thanks to Guy Ritchie, and they instantly make the film a little star.

There are a couple of sub plots involving a teen who knows what he is doing, and a raspy voiced 'bad boy' who wants the shop, and these fall flat too.

The film did have so much potential, but it runs out of steam about halfway through.

horror with a message
trashgang31 January 2017
A horror flick with a message. This is not going to be for everyone but it's the modern version of the Sweeney Todd story except that Sweeney is an immigrant that faces drunk people in his kebab shop he opens with his father. When some drunk are trying to enter the shop and the father got killed Salah (Ziad Abaza) goes berserk. But there's more going on.

Excellent flick, sometimes a bit slow but still delivers on part of story, the score is great and the effects used are stunning. It's not going to satisfy every horror buff but if you can take a horror with a message then this is must see.

A poor excuse for a film!

I'll keep this quick - AVOID!

Sorry I haven't met the word count yet so with a little waffle we'll head for the main point. This film will satisfy a particular set of viewers and anger those with more to say.

Thought Provoking Horror/Thriller
tracywooduk30 October 2017
Warning: Spoilers
This film had been on my watch list for a while and I finally got round to watching it this weekend. So glad I did! K-Shop delivered a fast paced, thought provoking gore fest! If you are squeamish or hate a bit of gore then this is not the film for you! K-Shop captures our modern society perfectly. I live near Bournemouth and can confirm that the scenes of drunken debauchery are accurate. This film follows one man and his hate against humanity after the untimely death of his beloved father. Ziad Abaza who plays Salah is top notch and captures the torment of the character perfectly.

One thing I will say is that I am very glad I am a vegetarian! Go watch K-Shop, you won't regret it.

What species is a Chantel?
nogodnomasters7 October 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Salah (Ziad Abaza) a Turkish immigrant inherits "Best Kabobz" from his father who died at the hands of hooligans...sort of. Salah, having lived in westernized Turkey and England his whole life still hasn't gotten used to Western decadence. i.e. sex, drugs and rock and roll...the staples of western civilization. At this point the story goes formula...he accidentally kills a man in his store. With the meat delivery being late...and every since "Motel Hell" human meat has been described as tasty. Perhaps it is. At this point, Salah applies his knowledge of social economics and opts to cleanse London of party people one person at a time.

There are plenty of cannibal killer food serving films out there, some better than others. This one half- hardheartedly attempts a message about society and cultural clashes, but nothing really heavy.

Guide: Swearing. Brief sex and nudity in crowd scenes.

Shop Smart, shop meat farm
kosmasp5 November 2020
Wait what? Also who does the shopping? And what would that even mean? And has this anything to do with Evil Dead? Probably not right? Just me trying to be clever again with a title and riffing off it a bit ... then again ... who knows? Well I should know, but enough of this nonsense (sorry kind of something I'm a master of).

This is a horror movie with a special shop owner. And like with most horror movies, he almost stumbles by accident into something ... horrible. He may not be the most likeable character to begin with, but I would never have thought he'd go and do ... well this sort of thing. Not very nice! Even to people you don't like. So this might not be your taste (no pun intended), but it is quite decently made. A bit more connection to the main character ... a bit more to the "victims" ... there are certain things that could have used a bit of work script wise ... but still if you like horror, you may not even care about that

Makes some good points but does so slowly
nikthebrush11 November 2021
K-Shop makes some good points about lad (and ladette) culture and racial bigotry but the protagonist is just too moody to sympathise with and the film takes such a long time to say anything. A vague almost romance with a hotel manageress goes nowhere and the drug dealing subplot is underwritten and shoehorned in. Had potential.. never reaches it though. Oh and also features some nasty body dismemberment porn! Not quite sure if this was a slasher horror, a thriller or a social commentary. Might have been all three but wasn't good at any one of them.

Today's special
Prismark1030 April 2018
K-Shop brought back some memories. I used to have a summer job working in a restaurant in a seaside resort. We had to deal with drunken revellers at weekends, a few would get abusive. Although we did not mince them up and serve them up as the kebab special as they do here.

Salah is a student who helps out in his dad's kebab shop in a seaside town. When his father is killed by some yobs, Salah snaps when he is later confronted by an abuser. To get rid off the body he puts them through a mincer and serves them to obnoxious customers. Pretty soon Salah gets a taste of murder and in his sights is a nightclub owner who peddles drugs into the community.

K-Shop is a dark comic horror film about broken Britain which goes on a binge at the weekends. It aspires to be a modern version of Sweeney Todd but the film is too long and the main character is too subdued. Although conflicted with the crimes he commits, we also sense Salah was already damaged as he and his dad fled a war torn middle eastern country, presumably Iraq.

Is the point of this movie, I guess. Brits are drunk, Turks are boring and psychotic. Boring being the key word. This movie also lasted 2 hours.

This Film is Full of Win
vegicat31 July 2016
Warning: Spoilers
What a delightful surprise! I'm not really sure what to make of this movie. Although it has violence and gore, it's not really a horror film -- more like a psychological drama.

The shopkeeper isn't an entirely sympathetic character on his own, as there isn't much character development going on, but the constant barrage of boorish, drunken antics of the nightclub hoppers makes up for it -- I could definitely see how having to deal with that lot daily would make some a little stabby (think Michael Douglas in Falling Down). The American equivalent would probably be something like being a cashier in a WalMart.

While there isn't a very complicated plot, it doesn't need it. There was just enough gore to induce squeamishness, and just enough violence to add tension. If you're looking for sexy-time, this movie isn't for you -- there is absolutely no skin, and no romantic interest happening.

There are vague hints that the shopkeeper would like a different reality, and possibly make some kind of meaningful connection, but it's blanketed with a sort of apathetic resignation. Overall, great acting, and an enjoyable movie. I probably gave it an extra star just because it surprised me. I'm so used to run-of-the-mill, yawn- inducing, poorly acted horror flicks.

Good film, just a lingering fart in the air..
donttouchmeprimate8 November 2020
All round, decent. Mostly good writing, good cast and interesting story, the only thing that let's it's down is Ziad Abaza. He is objectively a good actor, he just lacks any emotion to anything he does, it always feels as though he is reading lines. Because of that we are left to feel the emotions of the supporting cast who do a great jobby wobby.

Ps:Is Madonna still sexy?

No idea if the other reviewers watched the same movie...
dracoqc14 September 2021
Very weak and poorly made horror movie. The person who wrote the story clearly hate people who drink alcohol and do party, but sorry they don't all have 35 IQ and the story was zero realistic.

Seem like there are like one or two persons in this movie who have a decent brain, everyone else got the IQ of a crocodile.

Good movie if you're looking to sleep on something.

And I'm a fan of horror movies. But this one is too gory and predictable for my taste. I did find the topic interesting, since it satisfies this type of revenge. Hehe. Abaza is very good in the lead role, and you stay on his side at almost every moment.

The first part of the movie is too slow and they could have made it more exciting and energetic.

The movie is about family and morals, they want to show a British society in a horrible light, the murderer's motives are absurd, sometimes. The antisocial behaviour is just too much!

Quite disturbing and not for all audiences at all. In general this one is not really my cup of tea.

"Why do you think it is acceptable to behave the way you do?"
manuelasaez9 August 2016
I had no idea what type of film this was before I watched it, but I am now a fan of everyone involved with this picture. I often wonder what it would be like if someone took it upon himself to purge the world of awful people, people who get drunk and belligerent, people who enter stores and cause a disturbance, people who seem to have been raised by wild pigs in the forest and have no semblance of how to behave in a public setting. The guy in this film has the right idea; chop them up, and feed them to the other pigs. This sounds like a great set-up, and I am glad that someone finally took it upon himself to realize this in an incredibly effective film.

This movie was incredibly well-acted, the gore was generous and well done, and the script was interesting without being overtly preachy. Overall, it was the perfect movie anyone could have made based on the premise. The one sour note is the shift in tone towards the end of the film. It is not bad, per se, it just really threw me off, emotionally. I will be keeping a close eye on the creative team behind this movie. They deserve as much praise as the film industry can muster.

Brilliantly executed British feature with social relevance
zoicemac10 August 2016
This film was a lot smarter than you would think. Not a typical slasher film at all. It carries important messages about drinking culture, moral depravity, and human nature. For a low budget feature, the special effects and make up were incredibly realistic. Very impressive. The mood is very gritty and it feels like it takes you to a dark intoxicated psychotic underworld, which remains with you even after watching the film. The casting is superb and the talent is great. In particular, the lead role is fantastically played - you wouldn't think he was such a newcomer. I would love to see the director and main actor work together again

Spot on - UK grime at it's best
lukebyrne-7734118 September 2016
Awesome film. Captures the dark side of UK booze culture in a very entertaining way. Love the plot, love the gore, love the characters! The camera work captures the depravity that exists in UK nightlife in a way that is all too real for any of us who have been in a kebab shop past 11pm on a weekend. The creators have not held back on the realism of the most horrid scenes. Weak stomachs beware, there is no holding back! The characters are well thought out. Sadly, we have all met people who fit the bill, the cast does them all great justice. The realness of these horrible people is scarily accurate and really sucks you into the dark side of UK nightlife. Strongly recommend.

Wow
Well stumbled upon this on Amazon prime and wow what a film, the atmosphere was spot on capturing the seedy UK nightlife and the performance by Ziad abaza was immense, never seen him anything else but he did an amazing job. The plot is simple but effective and keeps you coming back for more at nearly two hours it kept my attention for every second. Great great film.

Excellent. Accurately depicted.
ru_thaker24 January 2021
The makers nailed it. This film depicted the punters in Kebab Shops & the like & street drunk night scenes so accurately. I wouldn't be surprised if they used real footage and not actual extras of the night street scenes.

I thought Ziad Abaza was brilliant who plays Salah the owner of the shop. You can't help but root for his character.

(On a side note, I always think what a nightmare it must be for business owners/staff & Law Enforcement who deal with these people).

jhmoondance24 December 2021
Well......this was a superb brilliant well thought out story of a kebab shops son with vigilante tendencies. It was exceptionally done n the plot was amazing. There were scenes of tension n stomach churning suspense.

The acting was outstanding n the characters were believable n likeable.

The ending was absolutely shocking n totally unexpected n a little sad.

I highly recommend this movie especially if you like suspenseful gory drama.

Loved it!

A decent horror film with a good narrative and a compelling message. The production values are good, the acting decent and it has a nice multilayered story arc, that kept me watching all the way to the end. I like the fact that it has realistic characters, who evolve in a relatable way.

Having said that, the ending is also the weak point in this film. It seems a lot of filmmakers today struggle with finding a good ending. This is also the only reason why I gave 9 stars instead of 10.

I definitely recommend this film.

One of the Best Everyday Man Psychopath Films from the UK
undeadlovers2 May 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I think it's the fact I'm on the wrong side of 40 now, or I'm a grumpy old bugger, but I can laugh with glee at a film such as this. This low budget masterpiece from the UK shows how the weekend gang of party animals truly looks. There are scenes in this flick of men pissing in the street, men and women fighting/being sick/fighting with coppers/shouting/passing out/wearing mad clothes, etcetera. In fact, some lads even kick a blow up sheep around at one point. Genius! Apparently most of the footage is real candid videos as well, which makes me laugh even more.

Before you reckon this is some government sponsored anti-drinking campaign film, nope, don't worry. What it is rates as perhaps one of the best psychopathic everyday man stories from these shores since Tony (2009).

Young student, Salah (Ziad Abaza) returns from university to his Father's battered kebab and chips shop which is situated in a rough weekend part of town (Bournemouth, to be exact). His Father is planning to open a restaurant, but due to his continuing ill health, Salah insists his Dad retire. One night, he runs the shop whilst his Dad is recovering in hospital, and he witnesses the plight of British people and their binge drinking as a fight between a man dressed like an Oompa Loompa and another guy dressed as a Golfer explodes. (Why does Salah always leave his laptop out on a table???)

"They are drunk. They don't mean it." says his Father upon returning to the shop after hearing about it. His eyes have seen many terrible things late nights. The Police aren't able to help with the damage. "Sorry, busy night." Smiles the officer.

It isn't long afterwards that a gang of lads tries to get into the shop before opening time. His Dad pushes them away gently until one shoves him down to the ground. His head smacks the pavement, he's dead when the ambulance arrives. Salah is in pieces. There's no CCTV footage due to none being installed down that street, nobody saw anything, and his Dad's health is brought into account. Salah is powerless. Filled with rage and disappointment, he decides to stay a while and temporarily run his Father's shop, whilst a brand new club is due to open nearby, run by a Big Brother contestant, Jason Brown (the same building his Dad looked to gain for the restaurant).

K-Shop is divided into chapter headings of a sort. When 'Jackpot' pops up, that's when the fun truly begins. The shop is waiting for a delivery of lamb kebab so Salah is annoyed. As he closes up, one lad is asleep and drooling on the table top. He shakes him a couple of times, but the kid is zoned out. He checks his ID, "You got five minutes, Scotty." Salah smiles and heads into the basement. Returning, he's stunned to find the kid frying some chips. "What are you doing?" he blurts. "I paid for this!" snaps Scott. They fight for control of the fryer and the lad plummets head first into the frying fat. Salah drags him out and breaks down. The kid's face is a mass of oozing sores. Scott is dead. Should Salah ring the police? He grabs the phone then imitates the scenario of a possible conversation. "Hi, I've just slam dunked a kid's head in the fryer and killed him. 'That's quite reasonable, Mr. Kebab Man, we'll send someone round right away to collect the body.'" He decides it isn't a good plan and stares at Scott's t-shirt which reads Jackpot. Only one way out of this. He chops and minces him, covers the meat with seasoning and slaps it all into the Elephant Penis sized kebab. Years pass, Salah keeps on killing and selling his notorious kebab meat to his drunken punters. There's loads of people missing articles plastered to the wall in his basement. He takes down dealers, racists, etcetera, but his main nemesis is Jason 'Slushy' Brown, the guy who runs all the drugs on the nightclub strewn streets. We have a few subplots, such as a pointless time filling development of a romance, a young lad who sees too much and works weekends with Salah, neither tale does much to the overall story line.

Some reviewers on other sites say this is a simple vigilante movie and toss it aside like the salad off a kebab. It's much more. Helped by the gore effects and the excellent central acting, K-Shop bounces along at a decent pace. Ziad Abaza plays Salah carefully, not overdoing it, just having the correct level of grief and oncoming madness. There's a low burning scene wherein Salah gets to know one of his potential victims whilst chained in the basement. They exchange ditties about their childhoods and fathers. As they talk, they get to understand one another.

The effects are totally off the wall with their realistic butchering scenes.Chopping, mincing, seasoning, all needed to ready human meat for the kebab stick!

This is writer/director Dan Pringle's first feature length project and it doesn't show. He has a master class in tension as moments in the shop and basement build to fever pitch, mainly between Salah and Jason. Highly enjoyable and makes you think.

Stumbled across K Shop yesterday !

LOVED IT ..

I went in looking for abit of a mindless gore fest, but I got a lot of heart and meaningful messages. Its very physiological, which I didn't expect.

This film did make us Brits look like complete morons 🤣 but it was still great !
