Sam and Dean become born again virgins...
skjoe-127 November 2013
Warning: Spoilers
A no frills, angel and demon free episode involving a goddess. People from a chastity group are being targeted by a strange figure with superhuman strength and emitting a strange blue light. Sam and Dean infiltrate the church group and sign up to be "forgiven" for their sins. This episode does have some nice moments though. For start there's the return of Sherfiff Jody Mills. She helps the boys with the case and even has a close call with death. I've always liked Jody Mills, although she shares qualities of most female characters on the show, such as being strong, smart and independent. She is believable and vulnerable. Whereas the usual female character will be scantily clad and petite. They feel too over the top, and forced. Such as the female hunter who disliked Sam in Epsisode 2. Similar to Ellen, she brings a motherly and leading edge on screen to the bothers and asks them the questions they wont ask each other. Another is the comedic side to Sam and Dean joining the Chastity group, sitting with girls chatting about dealing with their pact. Of course Dean is the worst candidate for this church, especially when he tells his feelings towards sex, enticing the other girls in a very funny scene. Its also great to see Dean get some action. With a Casa Bonita star too! I was disappointed with the "monster of the week". Vesta, a Roman goddess. Turns it out she used to require her followers to remain virgins for 30 years or she buried them alive. Now shes taken them from the church groups and locking them underground. Im never usually a fan of gods on Supernatural, apart from in "Hammer of the gods" in season 5 with all the gods from different cultures in, I find them rather boring. They're usually just a regular person, taking in early sacrifices and usually get taken care of with a simple stake to the heart. Although she is kept a mystery until the end, I wished it could of been a regular monster, even as much as a dragon, as some evidence points towards. Overall this episode has a slowish pace, with humorous scenes particularly involving Dean and a nice touch of Jody Mills investigating. We get another slight glimpse of Ezekiel at the end, however Dean still wont tell him the truth, probably to keep Sam safe. Not much really happening in the plot moving. Still need to see more developing episodes, although these "monster of the week" episodes are great, I just wish they were done as well as the previous two.

The episode goes for the cheap laugh-to poorer results
CubsandCulture14 September 2020
The most interesting thing in this episode is it at least grapples with Christianity becoming the dominant religion and how that pagan God might be parasitical on Christian mores. Oh and it is always nice to see Jody Mills. The case was largely unpredictable. It is entertaining for sure however I cannot but think a more thoughtful episode-in the vein of Faith or Houses of the Holy-could have come about had the writers decided to really kick the tires on chastity and purity culture given the concepts in the script. Instead, we got a few predictable-through funny-jokes about Sam's dates dying and Dean's fondness for Casa Erotica. It comes off as a wasted opportunity.

Another monster hunt!
mm-391 December 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Another monster hunt! Rock and a Hard Place is more humor then scare! The episode has an American Pie sex humor mixed in with a mystery. One experience Dean's adolescence view of sex over serious relationship. Dean's major charter flaw weakness because Dean is unable to have a long term relation due to his job. Dean never lets a relationship become to serious. One experience the fun poked at not church, by certain nit picking people who attend church. If one is ever been involved in church one will usually experience such drama. The episode's story unfolds and plays back into the overall story-line about Sam's health problem and Dean's secret. The hidden secret again! Watchable but forgettable episode. If you are going to miss one episode this season Rock and a Hard Place would be the episode. Six out of ten scares for me.

Entertaining

I enjoyed this episode for what it was. I'm happy to see Jody return and Dean's speech during the born again Christian meeting was great. The only problem I had was the stereotypical treatment of women.

Better than expected

Warning: Spoilers
I must admit, that usually I check out the rating of the episode on this site before I watch the show. And usually, this dramatically affects how I perceive the episodes quality. This time, I don't think that was the case, as the average rating for this episode was down, but I enjoyed it. I liked that they dealt with something they hadn't seen before, and Dean being the creepy bro to try and get with the counselor was pretty funny as well. It was a bit unbelievable that Dean was able to get with her, since she had obviously put quite a bit of effort into chastity, as she had many books and had only known him for like an hour. Either way, I enjoyed the episode.

Have faith! It's not your fault!
hp1993-739-94778529 November 2013
Warning: Spoilers
This seems to be another MOTW episode and for the most people it is. There are victims, Sam and Dean as the investigators and Jody Mills as a co-worker. There are some funny parts of the story (a porn star "reborn") and some mythological stuff about Vesta, goddess of hearth and her "virgins". But that's not what I find the most important in this episode. There are some nice moments in Jody's and Sam's speeches. First we see that the angelic problem of finding vessels is still going on and Jody was a little bit scared of that thing. This is important because we find out, that Jody turned herself to church after experience she had been through - Bobby's death, date with Crowley etc. She seems to have faith although all her life is kind of "Job's" exams style. Sam on the other hand thinks something went terribly wrong and what's more, it doesn't have to be something from outside, but it might be himself. He loses faith in recovery, Vesta only makes that worse and in the end we can see how much bothered he is. Dean in this moment almost reveals Sam the truth about the presence of Ezekiel, but "Zeke" puts in this and warns Dean again. I really do see something wicked coming from this Zeke-angel...Dean at least advised Sam to have faith. If you remember the position of Dean in the fifth season when he wanted to say Yes to Michael, when he almost lost his faith in better ending, I think it's a deeper advice than it seems at first sight. Not the best episode of the ninth season till now, but it shows the seriousness of faith, sincerity and inner doubts. In this episode you have to go under the surface.
