Bitterly short, hardly a horror and messy low budget movie.
quincytheodore4 June 2015
There's no way of putting it mildly. Demon Baby is barely passable as a family vacation video. Take a few actors in camping site, make them act with inconsistent script and call it a movie. The entire short length of the movie is Rose having pregnancy scare, she's moody and grumpy while Theo plays the compassionate lover role. For those hoping for good psychological twist or any coherency at all, the movie will disappoint.

It delivers little to no depth, not to mention the narrative stumbles around like Rose actually does on-screen. With barely over an hour runtime, much of it is spent in slow pace bantering and resulting in timid scare at best. It can't decide if it opts for possession, usual haunting or psychological breakdown, so it mashes all tidbits and creates a shoddy excuse for thriller.

If there's anything, at least the view is kind of nice and the actors do try. Soundtracks remind me of Silent Hill, not bad considering the limited production value. Honestly, this looks like a tryout in local cinema or the director's personal tape. Highly not recommended.

At least at the end of the movie I would have expected a Demon Baby .. !!! But NOTHING .. !!! Where's the f####!n DEMON BABY, damned .. ?!? Are you kidding me .. ?!? The Ghost of a woman (or a demon!?) appeared throughout the movie following Rose but never really did something .. so she could as well just have been imagining it ..

Boredome throughout the movie .. I was expecting something to happen but NOTHING HAPPENED .. !!! ARGHH .. !!! Promising and not delivering .. not even trying to deliver .. !!!

Boring, slow moving
genaennis8 June 2015
It's a good thing that the movie was so dull or I would not have had the chance to fully grow to hate Rose's character. Annoying, whiny, dismissive and selfish. I suppose that indicates good acting, that I had such a strong reaction to her?

The soundtrack was interesting and had some odd choices, but it fit with the moments. The acting was fair, but very poor on the part of Officer Thwaites. His odd behavior and strange, creepy way of speaking and looking at them had me thinking he would be a "bad guy". Nope - just weird, apparently.

The plot was weak and never reached an adequate conclusion in my view. The action scenes were completely random, without enough back story as to why she would act that way. Just crazy? Lame.

It passed a (very brief) amount of time while I was working, but not at all worth seeking out or re-watching.

Tedious B-Movie with Three Characters Where Nothing Happens
claudio_carvalho1 March 2016
Theo (David Wayman) and his pregnant girlfriend Rose (Carina Birrell) travel to an isolated camping area by van to spend the weekend. During the night, they are waken by Officer Thwaites (Cameron Jack) that warns the couple that they are in a dangerous area and suggests them to move to a nearby camping. Rose is disturbed with the baby and is haunted by visions and dreadful nightmares. She wants to get rid of the baby but Theo wants to have his son. Along the weekend, Rose has a breakdown with tragic consequences.

"Wandering Rose" is a tedious B-movie with three characters only where nothing happens. The task of writing a summary is very difficult to be accomplished since there is nothing to tell about. Maybe the most frightening moment is when Officer Thwaites knocks on the van's door. My vote is one (awful).

Horror movie? I think not.
RaginNana7 November 2015
Warning: Spoilers
I was in the mood for an afternoon of horror flicks. I checked out Demon Baby from my local Redbox and sat down anticipating to be scared in the daylight. I am so disappointed. The acting was passable, the story line confusing, the scares were nil, and no explanation as to what the hell I was watching.

As other reviewers have mentioned, by the title of the movie you are expecting a Rosemary's Baby or something similar. I sat through the movie just waiting for something to happen. There were a few brief glimpses of a ghostly apparition, but without context, they didn't make sense. Actually, the movie never made sense in relation to the title of the movie. "Wandering Rose" is a much better title as that is all Rose ever did.

Save your money. And for Pete's sake, change the title of the movie and the cover graphics. Completely misleading.

I've seen high-school students direct horror movies better than this
amrshehata853 December 2016
Okay, so we have a 70-80-minute movie. And the script and whole story would only do for a 15-minute one. What should we do? Let's see. Yes, let's have the characters drive, walk and canoe most of the time. And let us not forget to add some horror score even if what is on screen is only a tree or a flower - just so that our viewers would not forget this is a horror movie.

Well, the only horrific element in this crapastrophic movie is the acting. And, yes, it was that horrific. I watched halfway through this movie with my nephew, and we couldn't get past the 40-minute mark - since, by then, there was nothing but characters walking, driving and talking. There was not a single interesting aspect of this snooze fest. There is no story, let alone a backstory, no scares and no chemistry between the two leads.

To add insult to injury, whenever the female protagonist saw the 'ghost' - which was definitely nothing more than a 5-minute job done on Paintbrush - she acts like she hadn't seen a darn thing. Hogwash! We actually got to see that she saw the ghost in full view, once for more than a few seconds. Does the director really want to treat his viewers as if they were dumb? Does he think we are as shallow as the abomination that is the script - or lack thereof - he is working with? Does he not know what horror flicks are made of?

There are no words in the English language and not enough space in the universe to state just how terrible a movie this is. I am sure watching a vegetable rotting or paint drying would be much more fun, and a far better investment of your time, than seeing this.

Not worth the time of day
madisenmorton1 November 2022
I made an account just to leave this review this movie was disappointing and confusing on every level and a waste of time to watch I don't advise watching I wish it had more to it but it just doesn't offer anything and the title is devil baby but where the whack is the baby because it never got shown and she doesn't look pregnant throughout the whole movie so the title it's self makes no sense not to mention it's supposed to be scary and it's not a all I'm a complete baby when it comes to scary movies but all I was watching this was bored it's not worth the time to watch and I advise anyone who might want to see it not to.

Awful movie, would not receommend
pluto_writer3 January 2023
It was soo bad I fell asleep while watching it. I didn't understand a single thing about it. It was supposed to be a horror movie, but it's more of an failed wannabe. The story wasn't even getting somewhere, why would she act like she still had the baby if she had the abortion? Made 0 sense. It was messy, low budget. And don't even get me started on the acting, it's like they took the worst actors they could find. The facial expression were either too exaggerated or not even there when they had to. The plot was... nonexistent at this point. The discription made it sound cool, but it really was a disappoinment. I just wasted an hour of my life.

Horror or a psycho-thriller ? I don't know but it wasn't so "great" (pronounce this with an authentic Scottish "r") !
peterp-450-29871616 October 2015
Sometimes one wonders: "How can you survive something like this ?". Never was the opening line of a Gorki song so relevant as for this movie (difficult for non Belgian readers, since this is a Belgian band). Because you will surely need perseverance to complete this wannabe horror. Are you expecting a kind of "Rosemary's baby" story ? Well, turn it off because it's nothing like that. I had an inkling already from the beginning with the first paranormal phenomenon (or delusion). This is going to turn out bad because it really looked cheap and old-fashioned. But there were some factors that made sure I didn't classify it immediately in the category "Hopeless cases".

First the very successful wide shots of the Scottish landscape. The Scottish Highlands are beautifully portrayed with its hills and idyllic lakes. And when a local resident, who speaks with a blandly Scottish accent, participates in this movie, the big picture is complete. And that's how this film begins. A mobile home driving on a narrow and winding road. A subtle way to show that the place where Rose (Carina Birrell) and Theo (David Wayman) are heading for, lies far from civilization. Total isolation where even a mobile phone can't be used. But admit it. You also can admire such wonderful pictures on "National Geographic".

In general "Demon Baby" is far from scary or creepy. The musical accompaniment and sound effects try to create a creepy atmosphere and support the scarce scares. However, they didn't succeed in bringing real frightening moments, because they simply weren't very frightening from the start. A few hazy appearances and knocking sounds (as if the sound technician was banging his huge woolly microphone against something) aren't particularly creepy. There's only one specific moment I would call scary (to a limited extent). But ultimately that's not sufficient enough for a horror / thriller.

Next I admired the acting of the for me unknown actress Birrell. Actually, her performance is the reason why I didn't qualify it as an utter crap movie (And no, it's not because of the shower scene). A proper interpretation reflecting the panicky, unstable condition and the uncontrolled mood swings. She's a totally unpredictable character, which makes you constantly wonder whether she's really experiencing paranormal phenomena or her mental decline has something to do with it. Ultimately, this film feels a bit like "The Babadook".

This contrasts with the character Theo. Not that Wayman makes a mess out of it. I think the script wasn't that great and he tried to make the best out of it. Theo is an attentive guy who's extremely concerned about his pregnant girlfriend. And although Rose reacts irritated, he tries to make her feel as comfortable as possible. On the other hand he's like a pubescent teenager who can't wait to experience his first sexual contact. Every other minute he tries to seduce his girlfriend to play around a bit (he even gives her some sexy lingerie). After the umpteenth rejection, however, he runs of like a sulky teenager. Not so thoughtful and understanding suddenly. But his thoughtfulness, started to annoy me when Theo asked that same question again. "Are you alright?". Instead of waiting for the constantly recurring answer that Rose gave ("I'm just tired"), I had the urge to shout it out loud as well. I was sick and tired of that bloody stupid question.

Not exactly a success story, this British horror experiment. It fails in terms of genre-picking. Is it a horror? Or is it just another psychological thriller? If you look at the poster, you expect a demonic baby to pop out of that swollen belly. Just like in "Alien". Right ? But sorry. No baby. No demon. The best thing you do is to get a bottle of authentic Scottish Whisky, put on some bagpipe music as accompanying background music while putting on a matching kilt. At least you're in the proper mood. Don't expect the movie to do that for you!

Great debut horror
tobyosmond23 July 2016
Now, I wouldn't normally 9* this, but it's totally got a hard time from the other reviewers IMO, so I'm upping mine accordingly. I'd probably give it an 8 however. For a low budget debut feature, this is top quality. The FX are a bit rough around the edges, and there were one or two moments which could have been improved upon, but all in all I found this engaging, scary (which is rare for me these days), and a f~@$ing top effort for a first time feature! I felt it was a good length of time - short yes, but it didn't feel too short. Great cinematography, great direction, great work from all the actors involved, and the use of the locations was top - could have been overdone with travelling shots or whatever but I felt they got the balance just right. Great job to all involved!

Nowhere near as bad as people make out
carlx12321 July 2016
This film really confuses me, not in the films content or anything like that. In the rating. To read the reviews the films makers have committed some sort of atrocity, but this is far from the case.

Little Devil (Demon Baby/Wandering Rose) is a competently made, great indie film, it's shot beautifully, has nice performances, and does not try EVER to be something it's not. Yes at times it's a little slow as the creators battle with trying to achieve suspense, but beyond that it's all very very good.

I understand the movies budget was about £10,000 and trust me, that's a great return on a small investment.

The film tells a story of a couple on retreat for a holiday, but things are not all as they seem, lots of sub-plots occur and the film is a true mystery. The pay off may not be as strong as the build up, but still its a much better movie than other reviewers here make out.

Delivers on some levels
Lostintranslation8921 July 2016
I understand from other reviews that Little Devil cost less than £10k, on this basis I'm wading in with an 8 star review. Little Devil is not a brilliant film, however it is a brilliant achievement for the cash laid out. It's not the usual cheap British fare, this is a glossy looking film, that had been made with great time, care and attention.

The plot is very thin, but so are some of the best movies, the performances above the line for Low budget Brit horror, it's one of those films that clearly has the edge.

Beautifully shot, great sound, above standard story, nice performances. I can't really say much more than you get in the synopsis, give it a chance, and consider the films value.

Better than most
Zombiegirl201622 July 2016
The British horror film industry is littered with tired irrelevant horror. Low budget tat, regurgitated stories poor performances. But in two days I have been able to see two movies that make the difference. First I saw Death Walks, then I Saw this.

In wandering Rose a young couple are on holiday, to get away from it all. He wants sex, she wants a rest, and is clearly disturbed by something.

Wandering rose, is a very slow burning horror tale, it flaps about a bit at times, then at others is a series of scenes that just don't motivate. Beyond this though, you have a very clever little tale, that looks every bit as beautiful as movies like Eden Lake, but is shot on a shoestring. Director Greenop, really proves he has the power to be a potential master of horror, much like Johannes Roberts, I suspect he will build as one movie moves on to another, budgets getting higher, stories better.

This is a really nice first effort from an amateur filmmaker, soon to become a professional.

Best of British
info-3103419 January 2017
This is by far one of the best low budget British movies I have ever seen.

I need to qualify this slightly. The plot is not that great, but from a cinematic quality this is on par with the likes of Four Weddings, Eden Lake, The Remains Of The Day.

Early on you see Rose and Theo canoeing, you feel every single splash in the water. The Camera angles are phenomenal, the build up of tension just incredible. It's all so perfect.

The SFX are another let down, but the cinematography is like the finest you will ever see. Someone online claimed the film cost around $15,000 it looks like $100,000 and then some.

Extra points for color grading, performances and the score.

Corrie Greenop IS the director you need to watch out for.
