Filler but smart filler
walter-0822429 November 2020
This was mostly an exposition and character introduction/development episode, very much like the training episode. It went by quick. I really liked the second half the most. Hanji is a super interesting character and her scenes were very entertaining and funny. This felt like a nice relief from the action and harsher stuff in the series, although we'll be back to business as usual soon enough with the expedition. Can't wait.

An underappreciated episode

Some might call this episode filler. I call it a fantastic example of world building. Most fantasy stories have simple rules that all characters accept at face value. They lack a character that thinks critically about how "magic" or "the force" or other facets of their world work, because their presence would force the story writers to flesh out rules that they themselves haven't given much thought.

Not so for this story. The presence of a character like Hange forces the audience to think critically about the world presented to us and the logic underlying it. This is a risky move, but because the author did the work to construct a world build upon consistent rules, her presence deepens immersion further and allows for plot developments that would not be possible with a more shallow set of rules.

In other words, this episode illustrates why more fantasy and sci writers need to be brave enough to interrogate the worlds they want to create. They need more characters like Hange.

Levi squad

Warning: Spoilers
This episode is about Eren getting used to the survey corps while it does seem like filler it does give each member of levi squad character so that we can start to care for them there does seem to be a human threat introduced as Hanges titans were killed so this could be the start of a very different conflict 7/10.

Rewatch, 9.4/10

This was literally an episode that is in the top three of my least favorite episodes, but either way, this was still just amazing. After thinking, I think that Attack On Titan was the only show so far that was able to do that. Anyways, my favorite characters in this episode were Eren, Hanji, and Levi. My favorite things about this episode were the ending, the dialogue, and the music/soundtrack. Honestly, at this rate, I am just going to say that Attack On Titan has my personal favorite first season of all time, because this was just between amazing and perfect. I am going to say this once again: just imagine the ratings in the third and fourth season.
