Genre festival to open with Jacky in the Kingdom of Women [pictured]; other titles include Guardians of the Galaxy, Boyhood, The Harvest and Suburban Gothic.
Riad Sattouf’s Jacky in the Kingdom of Women will receive its Canadian premiere as the opening film of this year’s Fantasia International Film Festival.
The Montreal-based genre festival runs July 17-Aug 5 and has also announced it will hold a special screening of Guardians of the Galaxy.
Other first wave announcements include six world premieres: Leo Gabriadze’s Cybernatural; Jean Luc Herbulot’s Dealer; Aik Karapetian’s The Man in the Orange Jacket; Sarah Adina Smith’s The Midnight Swim; Dan Bush’s The Reconstruction of William Zero; and Richard Bates Jr’s Suburban Gothic.

It is that time of the year again in which we start preparing for our favourite film festival in the world. For the unfamiliar, Sound On Sight has delivered some of the best coverage of the Fantasia Film Festival since we first launched back in 2008. Remember writer/director Min-suk Kim’s 2010 thriller “Haunters?” The one about the guy can control your mind with his mind? Well, apparently Hideo Nakata thought Japan needed a remake of that flick. Because, you know, it was made so long ago. Enter “Monsterz,” a movie that features the weirdly ageless Tatsuya Fujiwara. I just saw this guy in “Straw of Shield” and was reminded why I love his work. Although I do have a soft spot for “Haunters,” I’m actually willing to give the Japanese remake a fair shake. I know, I know — how incredibly big and strong and dashing of me. I try. The premise is simple: A guy has the power to control the minds of others. After years of having his movies remade, Japanese filmmaker Hideo Nakata (Ring, Dark Water) has just made a remake of his own, entitled Monsterz. If you don't recognize the title, that'd be because it's actually based on a Korean film called Haunters, released in 2010.
Monsterz premieres over in Japan on May 10th, and we've got the full trailer for ya today. Check it out!
The film stars Fujiwara Tatsuya (Battle Royale), Yamada Takayuki, and Satomi Ishihara.
Synopsis
A man possesses a special ability to manipulate others with just his eyes. Because of this special ability, he killed his abusive father and was abandoned by his mother. He now lives a lonely life in the dark side of a city.
Meanwhile, Tanaka Shuichi doesn’t have a family and lives with his friends. Even though he is poor, he has a bright outlook on life. One day these two men meet.
