Luca Guadagnino and Lionsgate announced that the “Call Me by Your Name” and “Queer” director is in final discussions to film a new version of Bret Eason Ellis’ dark horror novel “American Psycho,” nearly 25 years after the same company released Mary Harron’s satirical adaptation. In a key role that elevated his career, the 2000 film starred Christian Bale as yuppie investment banker-turned-serial killer Patrick Bateman.
It’s the kind of announcement destined to raise eyebrows. Guadagnino is in a career sweet spot after “Challengers” and “Queer” this year (and “After the Hunt” in post); he already has many projects in the works, including “Separate Rooms” with Josh O’Connor and a Thomas Mann adaptation in early development. So why is he choosing a remake — and for a film that doesn’t seem that long ago?
New versions of older films are not unusual. Even the word “remake” is tricky here — does that apply with adaptations?...

Danny Boyle is the Oscar-winning director who has brought his boundless energy, visual aplomb and wicked sense of humor to a number of genres, excelling at science fiction, horror, romance and comedy. He most recently achieved box office success with the musical fantasy “Yesterday” (2019). But how does it stand up to the rest of his filmography? Let’s take a look back at all 13 of his films, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1956 in Manchester, England, Boyle got his start in theater and television before making his movie debut with with the macabre thriller “Shallow Grave” (1994), made when he was 38-years-old. He became an art house darling with his second feature, “Trainspotting” (1996), a comedic drama about a group of Edinburg heroin addicts. With films as diverse as the zombie chiller “28 Days Later” (2003), the children’s fantasy “Millions” (2004) and the sci-fi epic “Sunshine” (2007), he established his distinctive style of bright colors,...

Recently, I wrote an article about how Ron Howard’s Cocoon was hard to find in any format. It came out on DVD many years ago but went out of print and has never been issued on Blu-ray. You also can’t find it digitally on any platform. This is a perfect example of why you should always hang on to your physical media, as I’m lucky enough to own the now out-of-print DVD of that movie, and while it’s far from an ideal copy, it’s something.
But that got me thinking. What other movies are hard to find? I opened up the forum on Twitter, and I was shocked by how many prominent films aren’t available digitally and have gone out of print on disc, making them all the more precious for collectors. At the same time, there are some happy endings, such as Martin Campbell’s No Escape,...

The soon-to-release Netflix anime series Terminator Zero will channel the slasher horror tone of the original 1984 film according to its showrunner.
Next month sees the premiere of Terminator Zero, an eight-part Netflix anime that will add to the Terminator series in ways that has already gotten us rather excited with the snippets we’ve seen so far. However, showrunner Mattson Tomlin has popped up to pique our interest further by stating that the anime is suffused with the same “serial killer” vibes as the 1984 film which set the franchise into motion.
According to CNET, the series will take place directly after 1991’s Terminator 2: Judgment Day and will ignore all of the films and shows that came afterwards, instead sending the franchise in a new direction. That reveal alone is enough to get us interested, but Tomlin’s quote (to Empire) that the series’ tone will channel the dark slasher...

The cast is coming together for Danny Boyle’s 28 Years Later, with Jodie Comer, Ralph Fiennes and Aaron Taylor-Johnson among its ensemble.
28 Years Later is an apt title for a film that has been teased for decades. Information about 28 Years Later has been drip fed over the last few months, though, and now we finally have some concrete details.

According to Deadline, Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Ralph Fiennes will lead the cast.

Trainspotting producer Andrew Macdonald has been appointed as the new Chair of the Edinburgh International Film Festival (Eiff).
As part of the role, Macdonald will lead the formation of a new organization that will deliver Eiff from 2024. Macdonald will now recruit a board and executive team to lead the Festival’s development from September 2023.
Like many Scottish film professionals, Macdonald is an Eiff alum. He worked at the festival in 1992, during which he made a video diary about raising cash to produce his first feature film, Shallow Grave. The film was finally made in 1993 and had its world premiere at Eiff in 1994.
Written by John Hodge and directed by Danny Boyle, the film was a box office success and won the BAFTA for Best British Film. Macdonald went on to produce several films with Boyle, including Trainspotting, A Life Less Ordinary, The Beach, and T2 Trainspotting. Since 1997 he’s headed DNA Films,...

Ewan and Clara McGregor with her dad's Crystal Globe in Karlovy Vary Photo: Film Servis Karlovy Vary Working for the first time with his daughter Clara on You Sing Loud, I Sing Louder - the debut feature of director Emma Westenberg - gave Ewan McGregor the same kind of energy rush he experienced when he burst on the scene with Danny Boyle in Shallow Grave in 1994.
“It was the first first film for many of us working on it. Danny set the bar very high in what you can expect in the relationship between an actor and a director. We went on to make Trainspotting, then A Life Less Ordinary and then Trainspotting 2, all films that left their mark on British cinema,” said McGregor, 52, at a media gathering after his latest film's premiere in the 57th edition of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival.

Ewan McGregor not only received a lifetime achievement award, but also much love and adoration during a brief, but emotional ceremony at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival on Saturday night.
During the event at the big cinema celebration in the Czech spa town, organizers and fans feted the Scottish actor, director and producer as the President’s Award for lifetime achievement was bestowed upon him. On Friday’s opening night of the fest, Alicia Vikander received the same award, while Russell Crowe was honored with the festival’s Crystal Globe.
A warm welcome to McGregor by a host was followed by a particularly well-received career highlights reel that repeatedly drew laughs and cheers for scenes from the likes of the Star Wars universe, I Love You Phillip Morris and, of course, Trainspotting.

Robert Carlyle is the champion of unexpected sequels. First was “T2 Trainspotting” in 2017, Danny Boyle’s follow-up to the 1996 British classic. And now there’s “The Full Monty,” an eight-episode series sequel that picks up 25 years later with the original film’s cast. The first trailer shows how the city of Sheffield has fared — and why things may not have gotten any easier for our ragtag group of working-class protagonists.

The American Cinematheque is beefing up its board of directors with the addition of four Hollywood heavyweights.
Joining the ranks, in alphabetical order, are producer Jason Blum, TriStar Pictures president Nicole Brown, MacRo chief Charles D. King and Netflix film chairman Scott Stuber. American Cinematheque chairman Rick Nicita said the organization is “excited and honored” to welcome the four execs. “Each brings a unique perspective and appreciation of film culture and exhibition as the AC continues to expand its programming and community engagement,” he added.
Blum is a three-time Oscar-nominated, two-time Emmy winning and a three-time Peabody Award-winning producer. He founded and steers Blumhouse, a multimedia film and TV production company that is best known for horror. Blum serves on the boards of the Public Theater, Sundance Institute, Vassar College and the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures.
Brown runs Sony’s TriStar Pictures where she oversees all film development and production for the specialty label.

Ewan McGregor has said he was reticent to play Jedi master Obi-Wan Kenobi in the Star Wars prequel trilogy.
In the mid-1990s, when the Scottish actor was cast in the George Lucas science-fiction series, he was most famous for his work in edgier films from British director Danny Boyle, including Trainspotting and A Life Less Ordinary.
In an interview released Monday (29 August), McGregor explained how his image initially dampened his enthusiasm for the Star Wars role.
“I really had to think about it,” McGregor said on the podcast Smartless, hosted by actors Sean Hayes, Jason Bateman, and Will Arnett. “It came right after that Trainspotting period and by that time I was so full of myself.”
He joked about his mentality at the time. “I am Danny Boyle’s actor. I am f***ing urban grunge. I am the Oasis of the British movie industry,” he said, laughing.

Danny Boyle’s “Trainspotting” was based on the provocative novel by Scottish author Irvine Welsh, which chronicled a group of young Scots navigating heroin addiction and paying for it any way they can. A direct sequel, “T2: Trainspotting,” was released in 2017, which Boyle again directed, an adaptation of Welsh’s novel “Porno.”

Japanese Avant-garde and Experimental Film Festival announces full programme for Jaeff 2021: Bodies in advance of ticket sales on 22 July. Jaeff 2021: Bodies will be held at The Barbican from 16-19th September, and online from 20th-30th September.
Jaeff 2021: Bodies explores how we interact with other beings, spaces around us, and how expressions of the unutterable become vital means of communication and connection.
This third edition of the Japanese Avant-garde and Experimental Film Festival considers the body and sensation, and features work from directors Kon Ichikawa, Toshio Matsumoto, Susumu Hani, Chiaki Nagano, Takahiko Iimura, Tatsumi Kumashiro, Shuji Terayama and more.
In a time where words, facts and logic are increasingly ineffectual, powerless and absurd, this year’s programme attempts to make sense of the nonsensical. Finding that sometimes, the most powerful form of expression is often what we feel, rather than what we can say, write, or even think.

‘Harry Potter’ Actress Katie Leung Details Racist Fan Abuse: Publicists Told Me Not to Talk About It
“Harry Potter” actress Katie Leung opened up about her experience with racist fans during a recent interview on the “Chinese Chippy Girl” podcast. Leung played Harry’s love interest Cho Chang in four movies, including “The Goblet of Fire” and “The Order of the Phoenix,” and was cast as the Hogwarts student when she was 16 years old. The actress said it didn’t take long into her “Harry Potter” journey that she discovered fan websites full of racist messages about her.
“I was, like, Googling myself at one point, and I was on this website, which was kind of dedicated to the kind of ‘Harry Potter’ fandom, Leung said (via Insider). “I remember reading all the comments. The 71st Berlin International Film Festival is set to take place with the “Industry Event” from March 1 to 5, which will include the European Film Market (EFM), the Berlinale Co-Production Market, the Berlinale Talents, and the World Cinema Fund in online forms. From June 9 to 20, 2021 the Berlinale will launch a “Summer Special” with numerous film presentations in Berlin, both at indoor and outdoor cinemas.

With the exception of the Retrospective, the films will be shown at the March event.

Exclusive: Brazil’s Fantaspoa Fantastic Film Festival, which is the largest genre event in South America, has locked a partnership with local streaming service Darkflix to allow it to host its 16th edition online, and free for local audiences.
The 2020 edition of the fest was originally scheduled to take place in May this year, but had to be postponed due to the pandemic. As the virus is far from being contained in Brazil (the country now has both the second-highest number of infections and deaths in the world), organizers have ultimately decided that a physical edition will not be possible this year, and instead will pivot online.
Running July 24 – August 2, Fantaspoa will see Darkflix host a number of Latin American premieres of new genre films, and will feature a total of 110 features and shorts from 35 countries. Each title will have a cap of 5,000 viewers and will be geo-blocked for viewers in Brazil.

Danny Boyle has set himself up to direct a new project at Warner Bros. The feature ‘Methuselah’, which will star Michael B Jordan.
‘Slumdog Millionaire’ scribe Simon Beaufoy is said to be on the shortlist to pen the script, seeing the pair reunite.
Originally, the story was based on the Biblical story of a man who lived to be 969 years old. However, that story direction has seemed to have changed with sources saying the creative team want to take a new approach with the plot.
Tom Cruise was initially attached to the picture, but Warner Bros. was keen to give Michael B. Jordan the role instead as they are keen to find him more projects. The studio are hoping to make this one into a franchise, ranking it a high priority.
Also in news – Luca Guadagnino to direct ‘Scarface’ remake
Jordan will produce alongside Boyle and Heyday’s David Heyman and Jeffrey Clifford.

The new horror comedy movie Porno pits movie theater employees against a succubus, so naturally it would be fitting to watch the new film as a midnight movie at your local cinema. Unfortunately, the Covid-19 pandemic is preventing public screenings right now, but that's not stopping Fangoria from supporting theaters with a special virtual cinema release of Porno.
Reported by Deadline and shared by Fangoria on their official Twitter account, the virtual cinema release of Porno will begin at 12:00am on Friday, April 10th and run through May 1st, ahead of the film's VOD release on May 8th (it will also eventually be released on Shudder).
According to Deadline, during the early virtual release window, "Tickets are $12 a piece and will last for 48 hours after purchase..." The Porno tickets will be available through Vimeo, and virtual attendees can select one of several theaters to support with their ticket purchase.

Because you’re not allowed to shoot a work of fiction in the Vatican, production designer Mark Tildesley was tasked with recreating the iconic building for “The Two Popes.” “We used I’d say a 60/40 build vs. location relationship,” he reveals. Although parts of the film were shot in various palaces and buildings around Rome “that are of the same period as the Vatican,” he had to build several rooms from scratch, most notably the Sistine Chapel, the Room of Tears and the Pope’s office. Watch our exclusive video interview with Tildesley above.

The film follows a recent run of successful, music-themed films based on popular British bands. Bohemian Rhapsody, the story of UK rock group Queen featuring their music, ended on a hefty £54.9m after opening with a £6.4m weekend.

What would happen if you woke up one day and suddenly you were the only person with any recollection of The Beatles? That’s the scenario dreamed up by screenwriter Richard Curtis and director Danny Boyle for the upcoming musical comedy “Yesterday.” Universal Pictures has debuted the official trailer for the movie and it suggests the company could have a major counter-programming hit on its hands this summer.
“Yesterday” stars newcomer Himesh Patel as a struggling singer-songwriter named Jack who wakes up from a freak bus accident to discover The Beatles have never existed. Jack is the only person on the planet who remembers The Beatles and his music career skyrockets when he begins playing the songs made famous by John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Ringo Star, and George Harrison. The supporting cast includes Kate McKinnon as Jack’s music agent and Lily James as Jack’s childhood best friend, plus...
