I wanted to share a little bit of trivia with you. Riverdale has a lot of "in" jokes that take a really smart person to understand. There is a character in this episode Doctor Frederic "Werthers" who blames comic books for corrupting young people. Werthers is based on Doctor Frederic Wertham who in the 1950s did indeed launch a crusade against comic books and even wrote a book called Seduction Of The Innocent. This is a highly original episode showing off Jugheads creative talents as a comic book horror author (not to mention a tip of the hat to the Tales From the Crypt show). The first one features Dilton Doiley as a nerd on the basketball team bullied by his teammates. He suffers a psychotic break after being locked in his locker and gets gruesome revenge (if you like stories about severed heads this one is for you! Ha ha). The second one is an even better scream showing Archie as a stranded motorist who finds refuge in the Blossom mansion and has a romantic night with Cheryl only later finding out she has leprosy (well that nice old lady told him to stay in his room didn't she ha ha). I did not like the third one showing Betty as the victim of spiders who invaded her beehive hairdo chewing into her brain (that is actually an old urban legend). The last story involves a romantic triangle where Archie is dating both Betty and Veronica and doublecrosses them both (you know they say hell hath no fury like a woman scorned). He should never have agreed to meet them in the shop classroom where there was a handy buzz saw! Riverdale has been ridiculed by some people but I have to admit it is original and far out. It is a guilty pleasure of mine and I'm sad that it will be over this August.
