If there’s any genre in film that it’s easy to be a snob about, it’s horror.
I try really hard not to be, but it’s a challenge.
With decades of incredible films shaping my expectations, it’s sometimes difficult to love new movies in this niche.

And look, I’ve accepted that I’ll never get to experience watching The Exorcist for the first time again.
But over time, it got more and more difficult to find horror films that could truly rattle me.
And yet … I curated this list because 2024 has blown me away with its horror offerings.

Caddo Lake writer-directors Celine Held and Logan George are still pinching themselves over M. Night Shyamalan’s faith in their mind-bending second feature.
Years ago, when Shyamalan was actively recruiting cinematographers for the third season of his Apple TV+ series Servant, he took a look at Held and George’s acclaimed short film called Caroline, but instead of just hiring their Dp Lowell A. Meyer, he insisted on employing the entire team. When the married directing duo arrived at Shyamalan’s office to get the lay of the land and watch an early cut of Servant’s season three premiere, the NYU alums were both caught off guard when the Unbreakable filmmaker inquired about their second feature script that was then known as Vanishings.
“[Shyamalan] was like, ‘I’d love to read it.’ So we emailed it to him, thinking that he was just being nice, but he read it that weekend,...

It's been a busy year for M. Night Shyamalan. This summer, he dropped the wildly entertaining (and wildly silly) concert-set serial killer thriller "Trap," starring Josh Hartnett and Shyamalan's daughter, Saleka. The "Sixth Sense" director has several other projects in the works, but he's also been branching out as a producer, producing Ishana Shyamalan's "The Watchers" earlier this year and "Caddo Lake," co-directed by Logan George and Celine Held, this month. It's the latter film that's been climbing the streaming charts this week, with the latest viewership data from FlixPatrol listing it as the most-watched movie on HBO, home to the streaming site Max.
According to the data site, "Caddo Lake" is the most popular movie on HBO today, outpacing Gary Dauberman's long-anticipated "Salem's Lot" remake and some 2024 theatrical releases, including Will Smith and Martin Lawrence's "Bad Boys: Ride Or Die," Mark Wahlberg's inspirational stray dog flick "Arthur The King,...

M. Night Shyamalan certainly has been busy this year pushing out his signature brand of twisty thrillers. So far in 2024 we have had his daughter’s directorial effort, The Watchers, which he produced; the intriguing modest hit Trap, which stars another daughter and which he directed and produced; and now Caddo Lake, which is being heavily advertised as from “Producer M. Night Shyamalan.” Set for a streaming debut on Max starting Thursday rather than going theatrical like the rest of his feature output, the pic unmistakably fits right into his own filmography, even if he turned over writing and directing reins to the team of Celine Held and Logan George.
Actually this one went into production exactly three years ago under the title The Vanishing at Caddo Lake — while Shyamalan still was working his now-wrapped Apple TV+ series Servant, which happens to be a key credit for his filmmakers here...

2024 isn't even over yet, and we've already been hearing about a lot of new horror content set to be released in 2025. For example, Paramount Pictures will release its new horror film Vicious early next year, and you won't believe who's in the cast.
We first learned of this horror flick back in February 2024. At the time, it was reported that Paramount Pictures had boarded a new horror film titled Vicious and that Emmy nominee Dakota Fanning would be leading the cast. Bryan Bertino was also announced to be helming the film. Atlas Entertainment and Richard Suckle were signed on to produce with Melinda Whitaker as executive producer. The movie was also given a Aug. 8, 2025 theatrical release.
However, so much new information has come out about this film since then. For one, it will no longer be released in theaters in August 2025. Instead, its theatrical release has been pushed up to Feb.

The excitement around Terrifier 3, written and directed by Damien Leone, and starring David Howard Thornton and Lauren Lavera, has horror fans talking. Reports from early screenings claim the opening scene was so disturbing that viewers walked out and some even became ill. However, many believe this could be a marketing strategy to build hype, especially after recent horror films have failed to meet expectations.

Dakota Fanning recently spoke to The Cut about the awkward and oftentimes inappropriate interviews she was put into as a child star. The actor started her professional career at 6 years old and emerged as one of the Hollywood’s biggest child stars with performances in “Man on Fire,” “I Am Sam,” “War of the Worlds” and more.
“In interviews at a young age, I remember journalists asking me, ‘How are you avoiding becoming a tabloid girl?’ People would ask super-inappropriate questions,” Fanning said “I was in an interview as a child and somebody asked, ‘How could you possibly have any friends?’ It’s like, huh?”
“I have a lot of compassion for people who have been made into examples. If society and the media hadn’t played their part, who knows?” Fanning added about child stardom, noting that she was able to largely avoid the toxicity that so many young performs endure.

We’re halfway through September, and while “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” has been the big winner of the month so far, we have a new potential fall blockbuster this weekend. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
Paramount Pictures has done quite well with Hasbro’s flagship Transformers toy line, to the tune of $5.3 billion worldwide, mostly thanks to the five movies directed by Michael Bay. For this one, the filmmakers have put together a really impressive voice cast, including Chris Hemsworth, Brian Tyree Henry, Scarlett Johansson, Jon Hamm, Keegan-Michael Key and Laurence Fishburne. A remake of the Danish horror movie, Blumhouse and Universal released Speak No Evil in theaters over the weekend, and the news is good on both the critical and box office fronts.
Arriving in theaters with an 83% critical score on Rotten Tomatoes, Speak No Evil debuted with $11.3 million in 3,375 theaters at the domestic box office over the weekend.
Worldwide, the film’s current total is $20,873,595.
The reported production budget for Blumhouse’s Speak No Evil is $15 million, so the film should have no problem turning a profit at the box office in the coming weeks.
For the sake of context, Speak No Evil‘s $11.3 million domestic debut is higher than the opening weekends for several of this year’s horror movies, including Abigail, Imaginary, The First Omen, Blink Twice, The Watchers, Tarot, AfrAId, and Lisa Frankenstein. It opened to nearly the same amount as Blumhouse’s Night Swim ($11.7m), which ended with $54 million.

Sometimes a movie can be a best horror movie you never saw candidate but there are other instances where a movie has been seen and talked about but altogether lost to time. Richard Stanley has had a long career in terms of time he has been active but a very small amount of output in terms of actual number of projects. While the saga of his journey to direct the big budget remake of The Island of Doctor Moreau and subsequent firing has been widely captured in the documentary Lost Soul and his latest success with The Color Out of Space was highly regarded but tinged with controversial allegations, he had a couple of gems before all that. Dust Devil, his sophomore effort, still very much so belongs in the Best Horror You Never Saw category and I will get to that one too, but Hardware (pick up a copy...

There won’t be any worry of a slow start to the fall box office the way there was at the start of the summer season back in May, and that’s thanks to Warner Bros.’ “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” which is on its way to earning one of the strongest opening weekends of the year.
Carrying a $100 million production budget, Tim Burton’s sequel to his 1988 classic horror comedy looked on paper to have a modestly successful box office run several months ago, supported from its post-Labor Day release spot by nostalgic Gen Xers and elder Millennials and perhaps their teenage children.

At the start of 2023, filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan secured a multi-year deal with Warner Bros., and soon after that deal was made, we heard that his first movie for Warner Bros. would be Trap, a “psychological thriller set at a concert”. That project made its way through production toward the end of last year, with lead roles going to Josh Hartnett, fresh off his appearance in Oppenheimer, and Shyamalan’s daughter Saleka, and the finished film was given a theatrical release internationally on July 31st, with a domestic release following on August 2nd. (You can read our review Here). In the weeks since its release, Trap has racked up over $70 million at the global box office… and now it’s time for it to come home. Max announced this morning that The Watchers, Warner Bros/New Line’s supernatural thriller from first-time feature filmmaker Ishana Night Shyamalan, will begin streaming globally, exclusively on Max, on Friday, August 30.
The film hits streaming following a disappointing theatrical release kicking off in June, which resulted in less than $33 million in box office receipts.

For the sixth straight Monday, a new and different film is #1 on VOD at both iTunes and Fandango. “Twisters” (Universal), which grossed almost $10 million in theaters last weekend, is the latest summer hit to reach home viewing.
By design or accident, studios have spaced out their releases so every week brings a new top film. Since the VOD debut of “Civil War” back in late May-early June, no film has enjoyed more than a week as #1 on VOD.
As always, the timing for PVOD debuts don’t align with theatrical runs; “Twisters” and “Despicable Me 2” were released later than “Inside Out 2.” That’s no surprise — Universal is usually the quickest to go to PVOD; Disney tested the waters with streaming exclusives and same-day PVOD but now maintains the longest windows. “Inside Out 2” will hit PVOD after its 10th weekend, while it’s still in the theatrical top...

M. Night Shyamalan’s daughter Ishana Night Shyamalan made her feature directorial debut with a thriller called The Watchers, which received a June 7th theatrical release, courtesy of Warner Bros. / New Line Cinema. (You can read our review Here and watch our interviews with the director and cast members Here.) The movie did not enjoy the sort of box office success many of the elder Shyamalan’s films have, drawing in just under $33 million worldwide. A sequel isn’t likely… but if you’re interested in returning to the world of The Watchers, the story does continue on the page. The Shyamalan film was based on a novel by A.M. Shine (pick up a copy Here), and Shine has written a follow-up called Stay in the Light that will be reaching store shelves on October 22nd! Copies are available for pre-order at This Link.

Released in theaters earlier this year, debuting director Ishana Night Shyamalan’s The Watchers was an adaptation of the same-titled novel from author A.M. Shine, and we’ve learned this morning that Shine’s novel is getting an official sequel this Halloween season.
Stay in the Light will be hitting shelves on October 22 from Head of Zeus!
Embracing a fresh spin on the classic horror genre, Stay in the Light continues the heart-pounding saga of Mina’s fight against the Watchers.
The official synopsis previews, “After her terrifying experience at the hands of the Watchers, Mina has escaped to a cottage on the west coast of Ireland. She obsessively researches her former captors, desperate to find any way to prolong the safety of humankind.
“When Mina encounters a stranger near her home, she fears the worst – for she knows the figure is not what it seems. Soon, people she has encountered start to disappear.

Move over Passion of the Christ – there’s a new highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time now! Indeed, Deadpool & Wolverine, after only eleven days of release, has already overtaken the lifetime gross of Mel Gibson’s classic depiction of the crucifixion of Christ, with the Marvel three-quel only five million away from a $400 million domestic total. With a $97 million weekend, which only represents a 54% week-to-week decline, the film has already bested the lifetime totals of both Deadpool and Deadpool 2. The sky seems to be the limit for what will no doubt prove to be one of Marvel’s biggest movies ever – and proof positive that an R-rating is no detriment to the box office.
So far, the film’s international total is over $800 million, and it seems likely to pass the billion-dollar mark within a matter of days. That’s absolutely outstanding for an R-rated sequel.

A somewhat less ferocious than expected box office battle is being fought this weekend between Marvel’s juggernaut, Deadpool & Wolverine and M. Night Shyamalan’s Trap. While no one expected the PG-13 Josh Hartnett thriller to really pose any kind of threat to Marvel’s box office behemoth in its second weekend, the movie – which has been poorly reviewed (including by us) seems certain to open below industry expectations (but exactly according to ours). In fact, Deadline is forecasting that the film will be easily beaten by Twisters in its third weekend.
As per the early box office estimates, Deadpool & Wolverine is looking at a second weekend in the $94 million range (although it could rally and cross $100 million), while Twisters should make about $22 million, which is a terrific hold for this well-performing sequel to the 1996 classic. Trap looks to be a distant third with only about $15 million, although if word-of-mouth is really bad,...

Where are all my horror fans? Netflix recently added 10 horror films to its platform on the first of August. While I recommend checking out each new release, the one that should be at the top of your watchlist is the 2024 supernatural horror film Tarot. This movie is criminally underrated, in my opinion, when it really deserves all the love and attention.
Spenser Cohen and Anna Halberg (The Expendables 4) wrote and directed Tarot, making it their feature film directorial debuts. Like most movies nowadays, Tarot is based on another piece of work. It's based on Nicholas Adams' 1992 novel Horrorscope. Although panned by critics, the horror flick still managed to be a box-office success, grossing $49 million worldwide against a budget of $8 million.
Here's how I see it. It's okay to read critic reviews but don't let what someone else has said and their opinions deter you from watching a movie. Who knows,...

Audiences are enjoying the latest thriller from the master of twists, but when will it come to streaming?
M. Night Shyamalan is bringing a new movie to theaters for the first time since 2023’s “Knock at the Cabin.” His latest thriller is called “Trap,” and stars Josh Hartnett as a dad who takes his daughter to a concert, only to find a huge police presence is blocking him from leaving. The movie comes to theaters on Friday, Aug. 2, and is likely to feature all the storytelling sleight-of-hand that Shyamalan is known for, but fans are likely hoping the streaming premiere date of the film is more straightforward.
Key Details: “Trap” has an audience score of 66% so far on Rotten Tomatoes. The movie is being distributed by Warner Bros. Discovery in the United States, which means it’ll stream on Max. Viewers will likely be in for a bit of a...

When it comes to M. Night Shyamalan, it is a career that is one of the most mixed bags in cinematic history. For every Sixth Sense, there is a Lady In The Water. For every Signs, there is a Happening. For every Unbreakable, there is an After Earth. For every Split, there is a Knock At The Cabin.
He started out with Oscar nominations at the beginning of his career, plus comparisons to Hitchcock and Spielberg. But his obsession with out-twisting himself has too often provided disappointments. In the case of his latest, Trap, he writes himself into a corner from which there is no escape, if not for his main character, then at least for himself.

It was supposed to be the Summer of Shyamalan. After spending the last decade scratching and clawing his way out of director's jail with one self-financed hit at the box office after another, M. Night Shyamalan must've had 2024 circled on the calendar of his comeback tour for quite some time. The one-two punch of "Old" and "Knock at the Cabin" felt like a return to the auteur's minimalist roots, but a quirk of timing meant moviegoing audiences would be introduced to the next generation of Shyamalans in little more than a two-month span. In June, his younger daughter Ishana unveiled her directorial debut while his eldest, Saleka, comes to the forefront this August with her acting debut in M. Night's latest. "The Watchers" ultimately produced an uneven, if promising glimpse into the future. As for the latter, well, let's just say "Trap" likely won't win over any new converts nor rank among his greatest efforts.

Warner Bros Discovery is reportedly looking to break up its streaming and studio businesses from its linear networks to energize its falling stock price.
Wbd closed at $8.34, +0.34%, however, the media company is down from its 52-week high of $14.76 with a $20.3 billion market cap. Wbd CEO David Zaslav is apparently weighing myriad options from selling assets to separating the movie studio and Max streaming service into a new company, free from the group’s current near-$40 billion debt. This is all per the Financial Times tonight. Deadline has reached out to Warner Bros Discovery for comment. We’ll update when they weigh in.
The news hits as Wbd is making another round of layoffs, as Deadline reported first. In addition, longtime media analyst Jessica Reif Erlich two days ago begged Wbd to do something – anything — from selling the company, to selling assets, to finding a streaming joint venture or merger. “In our view,...

By far the biggest of the May movie releases, “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” (Disney) is #1 in its initial week on both iTunes and Fandango’s top 10 VOD lists.
This comes 60 days after its theatrical debut, with the longer-than-average window now typical for most Disney titles after aggressive home viewing placement during and right after Covid.
What’s surprising is how easily Jeff Nichols’ “The Bikeriders” (Focus) beat out Sony’s animated “The Garfield Movie” among other new releases. The former just passed the $20 million domestic gross mark over its fourth weekend. “Garfield” is at $91 million, four and a half times bigger, and part of a period where animated titles dominate both on screen and at home.
“The Bikeriders” was #2 most of the week at iTunes and #2 at Fandango for the full-week chart. It’s now #3 at iTunes, behind “Civil War” (A24), surging at a reduced price after significant success at $19.99 earlier.

It is not an exaggeration to say that Neon's buzzy horror flick "Longlegs" has instantly become one of the biggest box office surprises of the year. It simply cannot be overstated just how shocking it is that this particular movie did what it did in its first weekend in theaters. For a studio that has only ever had five movies make more than $10 million domestically at the box office during the entirety of their theatrical runs, a debut north of $20 million on opening weekend is downright staggering. Yet, that's precisely what happened.
Hailing from director Oz Perkins, "Longlegs" pulled in $22.6 million this past weekend domestically, absolutely obliterating even the most optimistic projections. It even blew past Apple and Sony's much flashier "Fly Me to the Moon," which opened to $10 million against a $100 million budget. To be perfectly clear, even if "Longlegs" had made one third of what it made,...

At the start of 2023, filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan secured a multi-year deal with Warner Bros., and soon after that deal was made, we heard that his first movie for Warner Bros. would be Trap, a “psychological thriller set at a concert”. That project made its way through production toward the end of last year, with lead roles going to Josh Hartnett, fresh off his appearance in Oppenheimer, and Shyamalan’s daughter Saleka. The film is now set to receive an international release on July 31st, with its domestic release to follow on August 2nd – and with those dates right around the corner, the Motion Picture Association ratings board has revealed the rating for the film. While Shyamalan describes the film as “What if The Silence of the Lambs happened at a Taylor Swift concert?”, we now know that the movie won’t be quite as hard-edged as The Silence of the Lambs was,...

It’s “Back to the Future” week at Netflix, literally.
Not only is Robert Zemeckis’ 1985 classic time travel comedy the #6 film at the streamer, but one of the decade’s most iconic characters is back with the just-released “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F” #1 there.
Picking up theatrical franchises isn’t unprecedented for the streamer. Netflix produced the second “Knives Out” film and is currently in production on the third. Previously, the company took shots at the “Cloverfield” and “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” series — to little impact. Netflix has continued some Tyler Perry series. But “Beverly Hills Cop” is a whole other level in terms of previous iconic success.
The 1984 original was one of the biggest comedy hits ever released, with an adjusted domestic gross of over $600 million. A fourth film has been in the works for years, with Murphy, producer Jerry Bruckheimer, and Netflix joining forces to license “Beverly Hills Cop...

The film is now set to receive an international release on July 31st, with its domestic release to follow on August 2nd – and during an interview with Empire, Shyamalan revealed his pitch for the film is, “What if The Silence of the Lambs happened at a Taylor Swift concert?”
Trap has a short and simple synopsis: A father and teen daughter attend a pop concert, where they realize they’re at the center of a dark and sinister event.

One of the worst kept secrets in Ireland’s film and TV sector has been official confirmed by the local industry body — that the second season of “Wednesday” is now shooting in the country.
The hit Netflix show — produced by MGM Television — became a smash hit in 2023, with season one (which shot in Romania) amassing more than 250 million views and winning four Emmys. It was revealed late last year that the second outing would be shifting production to County Wicklow in Ireland.
But for Screen Ireland, which has helped welcome countless major films and TV shows — including the likes of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” — to its shores since it was re-launched in 1993 (as the Irish Film Board), “Wednesday” marks the “largest production to ever film in Ireland” in terms of production spend.
To celebrate the news, Ireland’s prime minister, Taoiseach Simon Harris, visited the set, meeting series director Tim Burton,...

M Night Shyamalan’s latest thriller Trap is almost here – and the full trailer for it has just been released. Take a look…
August will see the return of M Night Shyamalan to cinemas with Trap, his latest film that arrives a quarter of a century after the filmmaker gave the world one of the greatest thrillers of modern-ish times in the form of 1999’s The Sixth Sense. More recently, the filmmaker released Knock At The Cabin which received mixed reviews, although for this writer’s money it saw Shyamalan at close to his best again.
While Shyamalan (or any filmmaker for that fact) could spend their whole career vying to achieve another bravura twist ending to match the one that stunned audiences in The Sixth Sense, 2023’s Knock At The Cabin really excelled at the other important bit of a thriller – the long, drawn out tension that becomes increasingly unbearable as the story progresses.

In a move that underscores the rapidly evolving landscape of film distribution, Jeff Nichols’ latest directorial effort, “The Bikeriders,” is set to make its Video on Demand (VOD) debut on July 9, 2024 – a mere 18 days after its theatrical release. This swift transition from cinema to home screens reflects a growing trend in Hollywood, as studios grapple with changing audience behaviors and the financial pressures of the post-pandemic era.
“The Bikeriders,” a period drama starring Tom Hardy, Austin Butler, Norman Reedus, and Jodie Comer, tells the fictionalized story of the Vandals Mc, a motorcycle club rising to prominence in 1960s Chicago. Despite receiving critical acclaim, evidenced by its 81% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the film has struggled to find its footing at the box office.
Since its June 21 theatrical debut, “The Bikeriders” has earned $23.7 million against a reported budget of nearly $40 million. The film’s opening weekend saw a respectable $9.7 million haul,...

Though they’ve worked together only once (the animated “Happy Feet”), Australian director George Miller and recent AFI Life Achievement Award winner Nicole Kidman share a distinction this week. Both of their most recent films lead on respective home viewing charts.
For Warner Bros. and Miller, the #1 status for the newly released “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” is positive news after its very disappointing theatrical results. But even more than a normal high-return PVOD release, it is available for a $24.99 digital purchase price rather than the standard initial $19.99 rental.
Kidman has provided an eclectic filmography that spans from Jane Campion and Lars von Trier to “Batman Forever” and “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.” Her latest, rom-com “A Family Affair” where she credibly plays at the age of 57 the love interest for Zac Efron, testifies to a star quality along with enduring talent. A Netflix original, it started as #1 this weekend...
