typical heartwarming coming of age story
natcalgary6 September 2019
Here are quite a few movies to this degree but this one stood out to me for a few reasons. The main character did a great job and the superb cast that surrounded him didn't take away from his acting.

Kept my interested the whole time even though I knew how it would most likely play out,

Worth a watch with the family

Not top comedy or even top drama ,, but i really liked it
Aktham_Tashtush15 August 2018
The movie is purposeful has a clear message and that is what it's all about,

The plot is strong and surprisingly the script is well written, and the events are connected and goes fast and smooth without any dull moments.

"Accept yourself but never stop improving".

The casting was really good ,, loved Blake Cooper even though he isn't a fat anymore, he had that honest, pure and innocent sense of humor ... we haven't seen much of Judy Greer or Luke Wilson, i love the folks but their appearance was so minimum ,, Donald Sutherland was also good ,, but after all lets be honest it was all about that "Bobby Marks" kid.

Anyway, heartwarming family movie , definitely recommended.

Coming of age formula with a chubby adolescent protagonist
rigovega20 August 2020
Wonder Years narration? ...Check ...Summer lake? Check ...Out of reach love interest? Check...

The point im trying to make is that the film uses summer coming of age movie cliches in a way that is rather bland. It tries to go for a heartwarming kind of vibe and it never feels good or natural. I liked the acting and the setting but the story is not too memorable. The films moral on the other hand is actually quite good.

A film about growth
Gordon-1128 August 2018
This film tells the story of a 17 year old man who experiences a life changing summer holiday.

On the macro level, the story is satisfying and heartwarming. It is good to see the changes in the young man. His experiences are quite saddening, but it leads up growth.

Youth roles GREAT, adult roles stumble
cruzarts-7394621 August 2018
This film seems uneven upon first watch, but upon analysis there's a sharp division between all of the youth roles and adult roles.

Blake Cooper (chubby kid from CHUCK and MAZE RUNNER) heads the cast with a performance that is thoughtful, genuine and winning. He's surrounded by familiar young characters who are fleshed out by talented young actors.

Then we come to the adult roles: Luke Wilson as the dad is one-dimensional and barely registers. Hence, I didn't really care about his character in the least.

Judy Greer's considerable skills can't bring life to her poorly written part. As a professional, she connects with Blake Cooper, but the dialogue is severely limiting.

Donald Sutherland suffers the most, effecting an accent that might be South African or British, but it comes and goes, and is a terrible attempt. His accent detracts from his character and makes for a ghastly performance.

This could have been a classic coming-of-age movie, but its flaws -- drawn along age lines -- make it an okay one-time watch.

I'm now a fan of Coopers: he does a fantastic job. Interestingly, when I looked him up to see what else he's done, in new pictures he appears to have shed all the weight and cuts a very handsome figure.

Review Based on the First (painful) 30 Minutes
emailtombuchanan1 January 2019
A bullied fat city kid summers in the country and takes a part time job cleaning a rich persons house and yard. Stuff happens, I guess. I watched about 30 minutes and couldn't go on.

Overcoming Adversities
tj149810 July 2019
Heart warming film about a young kid who's overcoming some issues. He's secretly in love with his best friend, he's getting bullied, he's protecting his little sister, he's worrying about his parents marital problems, all while working for & learning from a learned local. Loved this film, ignore the bad reviews, oh and, great soundtrack.

If you have time to waste....
Muzic572061 April 2019
This has to be the slowest movie ever filmed. It really had no plot and was all over the place. The only thing that was even halfway good was the music. If not for the music, I would not had made it to the end. I will deffo put this in my book of "Movie Flops". Why Sutherland and Wilson even took a part of this mess is beyond my imagination. For those folks who gave it anything above one star, are apparently under aged and very easily amused and entertained.

10 Stars over and over again!
babycakes-4526910 August 2018
I have to say it has been a long time since I rated a movie 10 stars. This was by far the best movie I have seen in a long time. The acting was superb, it sends a message that everyone can relate to. Whether you were the fat kid, or you were a bully. You will walk away from this movie feeling good, and reminiscing about your youth. Thank you for this amazing movie!

Such a slow and uneventful movie. It has no real point to it. Wouldn't waste your time with this one.

Simply WOW
imdad-3041711 August 2018
One of the very few movies that compelled me to write a review. From the start to the very last scene you will be 'wowed' to the stretch. Acting was better than even some academy award winners. Same goes for Cinematography and direction. 1000000+ stars from me.

A movie needs more than good intentions
name99-92-5453899 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I'm a sucker for this sort of movie: youngster is pushed by adults or circumstances to stop being a nothing and become an adult.

Think Whiplash. Or Like Sunday, Like Rain.

But simply liking the idea, even in a world where I wish there were more movies that told kids that it's OK to excel, but doing so doesn't come for free, isn't enough. This is just an average movie. There are all the expected beats, at the expected times, the expected A and B stories, the expected resolution.

It feels like it's created by an AI that carefully read Save the Cat and followed every rule. So it misses out on the single most important feature of a movie, even beyond having a message I like, namely "For gods sake, STAND OUT. There are ten million movies in the world - give me a reason to remember yours".

Not as good as the book.
brentandlori-0048917 May 2019
Measure of a Man is based on the novel One Fat Summer. The book looks at a young man who overeats and has little focus through his life. When he gets a job and learns to face adversity he learns to be a man. The movie follows the novel for the most part, but loses the humor, and misses the whole point of learning independence and self worth through work and effort. The movie seems to have him sitting around the cabin bored far more often than the book did. I may have liked the movie more if I had not read the book, but I think most people will come to this movie hoping to see the book brought to life.

Nearly perfect film
shoobe01-113 September 2020
Really a nearly perfect movie, and if you don't like it I don't want to hear about it.

This is life, especially as a teenager. Annoying, tiring, nagging, you make dumb decisions that haunt you but no one else notices, full of disasters that are not the ones you expect to happen, abusive here and there, boring, great occasionally, and every once in a while the perfect song for the mood.

Wow! What a nice surprise!
iamjamalwhite24 February 2020
We really enjoyed this simple little story, well told and well acted. Everyone did a great job and you are left with a warm feeling inside at the end. This was one of my favorite movies of the year. No cussing or nudity. No agendas. Just a great little movie. Highly recommend!

Not Bad, but slightly towards the goods
muhammadilhamturtle11 February 2021
I'm giving a rating of 9/10 just because, I wanted to bring the rating up

Plots are a bit on the flat side. It's guessable but enjoyable What's good is the moral value actually What Dr.Kahn thought us is what I think what this movie is about

I believe that there's a good amount of kids at Bob's age that has quite of a similar story to this film. It shares the feeling of what it's like being that person. Like a filmed diary It tells how it is on the other side of the world, different from what it's like being me at 17

Other side of the note, it's quite common with the "Summer Vacation" types of movies Worth to watch on your spare time. Not a must watch but better to look at

For anyone who has been lucky enough to be young.
Kurt_Bludgeon12 July 2020
It's not an Oscar winner. But some have seen fit to award it 1/1o. For me, this film is well shot - the story is simple, honest and resonates. The acting is uniformly excellent. There may be cliches in the portrayal of "Summer folk" on the east Coast of the USA - but that is the reality. So.. why would you have a down on the underdog as he fights unhappy parents, weight issues, bullies, lawnmower, saucy younger sister and - the killer of all killers - unrequited love! All of these are dealt with humanely, realistically, positively and without a sugary coating. And that last shot? Marvellous! Would recommend to anyone who has a a heart!

Deceptively simple story.
jaybsigel17 June 2021
The story starts in 1976 with music from that period. A kid get hired by a Dr. Kahn (Donald Sutherland, a college professor?) to do outside yard work while vacationing around a lake. There are several plot lines going on and things are not what they initially seem. If you don't listen and see closely, you will miss the townies calling Dr. Kahn an anti-Semitic slur. Look closely during the ice-tea scene and you will very briefly see a fading number tattooed on Dr. Kahn's left forearm, obviously from a concentration camp. The kid is bullied by 2 of the townies and eventually confronts them and wins their respect. Then, he confronts the doctor who he thinks has been taking advantage of him. In the end, it all ties in together and it's very nice.

Story of (every)one's life.
matingasimzade16 February 2021
I don't find myself claiming this movie to be something outstanding. No, I wouldn't say that. It is rather a simple story with slight shades of sadness.

Yes, there are certain moments in the movie where you are simply amazed by the power of a character. However, it is quite a rare and artificial traits for a common person, especially of that age.

The only reason, I would, despite all of the said above, recommend this film is to remember all the things you've been through growing up and to praise yourself for the will and strength you found in yourself to come so far.
