"Resurrection" a Fine Adaptation of Jason Mott's "The Returned"
HstryMjr0710 March 2014
I have been excited for this show for the better part of six months since I found out about it. My excitement for it has mostly been because the source material, Jason Mott's The Returned, was one of my favorite books of 2013. While there are certainly coincidences, the show is not an American adaptation of the French show "Les Revenants". It is instead an adaptation of Mott's work.

Although certain relationships and characters have been changed/altered, thus far the show has captured impact of the return of Jacob Langston. Somehow the writers, and even director, have been able to capture the poetic and deeply philosophical nature of Mott's prose. My one complaint of the book was that Mott seemed to through a lot at the reader and everything going on became overwhelming. The pacing of the pilot was the complete opposite. While the teasers leading up to the premiere certainly eluded to more people being "resurrected," the show is not throwing too much at the viewer just yet.

In the book we don't ever really receive an explanation as to why these people return, but I am looking forward to how the show expands upon the mystery.

Really good. Can't wait to find out more.
Shopaholic357 May 2014
I didn't know what to make of this show when I watched the first couple of episodes. I loved the very first episode but each episode after has been on a slightly lower level. While there is still drama and mystery it feels like it is going in a different direction. I personally still really like the show but I have a feeling that you will either love it or hate it.

To be honest the reason why I initially watched this show was because of Kurtwood Smith. I've missed seeing him in things since That 70's Show finished up but it is good to see him making great television again. In fact the whole cast is extremely talented and a big plus.

If your interest was piqued when you first saw the promotional clip then my advice would be to give it a go. The first season is short enough for you to take the plunge.

On the fence

Warning: Spoilers
After last nights premiere I'm torn about whether or not I am a fan.

I'm currently reading the book it was based on and they took a lot of creative liberty in the show, but that is not what bothered me the most. What got to me was the fact that the producers seemed to have ignored the fact that when the kid died 32 years ago smart-phones didn't exist... So how did he know how to go into an app to write his town's name? How was he not shocked about, oh, everything around him? Technology, aging people he used to know, god knows what else?

The rest of the show was decent enough (acting, cinematography), but I really hope they somehow address these issues later on in some way. I will keep watching for now to see how it picks up

Brilliant remake, just as good as a new one
frasif0010 March 2014
To be honest I wasn't optimistic at all. Les Revenants was a brilliant and unique creation, award winner for International Grammy. I couldn't see any way how they could re-enact that brilliance. But after watching this 1st episode, I must admit this one isn't bad at all ! They expanded the boundary, brought their own twists and made it something new. Whether u have watched the original or not, that won't affect at all! Les Revenats had an Godly location, this one might not have that. But they tried with some new characters and aspects to make up for it. While you are at it, you better enjoy the ride ! Its gonna be shocking and bumpy !

Warning: Spoilers
After the first watch I find the show to be intriguing enough and not able to guess what is coming next. The characters develop quickly The flash backs are clear and not clouded. The character flaws are not worn on their shirt sleeves. I like how religion is included in the plot. The characters are believable and the town seems like any town USA. The Returned told grander, and with a whole new voice.
face-819-9337269 March 2014
Warning: Spoilers
This is The Returned with all of the American twists, as well as taking the scale, and amping it up from a small town in France to the world. If you have not seen The Returned, no worries this should fill that need for most people. The acting is decent, though the entire production has that Middle America green screen feeling, even the opening scenes of China. If they are following the formula of The Returned then we are in for a good climax, and many fantastic reveals. The connection to the special effects in The Dome is undeniable, but they are passable when used. Mostly though this story will be in the touching reunions or frightening ones. I Enjoyed where they have started, and recommend it. The religion is going to be necessary in that part of the world, though they do look to be dancing with that a little already.

Edited March 17 2014: After seeing the second episode I am forced to take a point from my review, and tell you all that this show is not going to work. Really just watch "The Returned" so what if you have to read subtitles it makes this show look like the garbage that it is turning into.

The Best TV show I have see in a long time
maria-728-20222518 March 2014
This is by far the Best TV Series i have seen in a long time. The Previews really kept me interested, such an interesting and thought provoking storyline and when I saw the first episode, it definitely did not disappoint. Captivating just like the preview. Great choice of characters and actors. The story line, although taken from existing stores, is still very unique on its own. The mysteries keep you wanting more. the suspense is unbearable. The way the story is told, you really cannot tell what is going to happen next, waiting a whole week is just too much!

really can't wait to see where this show is headed!

Decent, but could be much better
jroads-946-98008612 March 2014
Warning: Spoilers
When I first saw this advertised, it seemed obvious that it was to be a remake of the 2012 French series Les Revenants, translated as "The Returned" when broadcast on Sundance Channel. Les Revenants, in turn, was based on a 2004 French movie "Les Revenants", translated as "They Came Back." So I was surprised when I recently read that it's NOT a remake of the French series, but based on a 2013 novel named... that's right, "The Returned." I'm afraid I can't buy that it's simply a coincidence. Nevertheless, I wanted to give it a fair shake.

First, the good points: The storyline and characters are mostly OK. I give just about any new show a few episodes for the actors to get comfortable and feeling their new roles. Even though I still maintain it's a little too close to Les Revenants, the location, characters, and so far the details are new. There were a couple of twists that were welcome.

And now, the not so good: There are some pretty bothersome problems throughout. I would have expected the first returnee to at least pretend to be a little more upset or confused with all the changes in the world since his initial death. Nope, he magically didn't notice that cars were different, technology was different, etc. Plus, he woke up with a perfectly clean shirt that, despite at least two or three days of running all over the place, miraculously remained spotless. How about a change of clothes? Parents? Directors? I don't care who, but someone get that kid a new shirt. Stat! Also, the direction kind of abruptly ended in a few spots. A clue given to details of the first returnee's death were curiously ignored. It was picked up later, but just didn't seem like it was handled well.

And there were a few tired clichés here and there. I actually laughed at one scene when a liquor bottle was whipped out and guzzled furiously, and then shattered. It was over the top.

I'll give it a few more episodes to see if it can come into its own. If so, it will be nice to have another sci-fi-ish show to watch. If not, I'll chalk it up to just another sub-par remake of a great foreign series (e.g. "Queer As Folk" and "Being Human"). Oh, except it isn't a remake. Sort of.

Worth the wait...
creative48517 March 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Just watched the second episode, and things are starting to get dark. Love the image of the church being painted on the inside - reference to whitewash? Many symbolic gestures to foresee the future of where this all might go. First two episodes suck you in to think this will be a touchy cloying theme, but I can't wait to see what's next, I don't think it will be sweet and cute.

I have had enough of police dramas. I get the vampire stories. It's high time for some fresh and original science fiction/fantasy work. Hopefully it will be able to hold its own for quite a few episodes. The way the last episode left me hanging on two huge questions they are guaranteed to get me back - who or what if anything was in the coffin, will I see claw marks? By the looks on their face I will bet it's empty!

This is not Based on the French "the returned" show but...
wheresjesus8 April 2014
Resurrection is based on The Returned, the popular debut NOVEL by Jason Mott that had a global scope, with the dead returning everywhere and causing a great deal of existential angst. Please don't compare the two, as this is NOT an adaptation of the French 'Les Revenants' also called 'the returned' but a different story entirely. The French 'the returned' show is based off of a movie 'They Came Back', a 2004 French movie, released in France as Les Revenants and in the U.K. as The Returned, which tells the story of a small town forced to deal with a sudden influx of previously deceased residents. Many people who have seen 'Resurrection' TV show based on Mott's book are reminded of The Returned—not his novel, mind you, but the Sundance series that originally aired in France and is based on They Came Back, the movie. All of that being said, this show is pretty weak in my opinion. Everything seems to fall flat, and the acting is not that great, save for Frances Fischer.

I loved this.
LAJBarron9 March 2014
I am in stunned in wonder I loved watching this it is a riveting concept. For my deepest thoughts in contemplation as too, what will happen next. I must admit though I did cry, I don't know how anyone wouldn't. The question is what if you one day you seen someone you loved maybe a sweetheart a husband, wife who died, a mother, father, sister, brother friend return. I am sure others will read philisophically deeper into these thoughts. For whether it is religious or emotional I do know I am hooked in all certainties to watching this. I wish, I hope someday we could all see the reality of being resurrected in real life not just afterlife.

Decent
ooleyguy4 May 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Why is everyone comparing this to some series on European television that is similar to this but not the same? Other than that, the series is OK. It is implausible at times. The little boy should be far more inquisitive about the new tech that surrounds him. A lot has changed in 30 years. When watching it, it is important to note that from the time Jacob comes back to the time the Army comes in is only 1 week. Months haven't passed by and although it is a jump in the imagination realm, it's possible that everyone in town didn't automatically start sending Facebook Spam. The acting is acceptable, the cinematography is OK. It's a fun show. It's no worse than a lot of stuff on TV these days and a lot better than most of the other fantasy/sci fi on now.

interesting start but fades away
SnoopyStyle8 May 2015
In Arcadia, Missouri, Henry (Kurtwood Smith) and Lucille Langston (Frances Fisher) are shocked when their boy Jacob returns to them 32 years ago after his death. Immigration agent Bellamy (Omar Epps) brings him back to town from China. Sheriff Fred Langston (Matt Craven) and his daughter Dr. Maggie Langston (Devin Kelley) try to solve the mystery. Jacob's childhood friend Pastor Tom is trying to come to terms. Then more and more people return.

This starts with an interesting premise. Instead of digging into how they are returning, the show spreads out into everything except that. There's a widespread conspiracy of silence that keeps the general public in the dark. The great concept and tension slowly drains away over the two seasons. The relationships are fine. The acting is good. I just kept waiting for the show to move forward in the central issue.

No theories yet?
joe-3828310 March 2016
Interesting premise at the beginning. A young boy wakes up in rural China 32 years after he died in the US. Everyone wants to know why. But I want to know how. I'm half way through season 2 and not a single theory has surfaced yet. Was it aliens? Secret government experiments? A result of evolution, global warming, or chlorine in the water? Or could it be a twisted version of the fulfillment of biblical prophecy when the dead are raised ushering in the apocalypse? Why are none of the characters in this series curious enough to get the bottom of what could become an unmanageable crisis or the greatest discovery in human history?

Disappointed
ccma-9793422 May 2017
Seriously! I was disappointed when I found out this show was being cancelled. It was an amazing show. It seems like when show like this are being shown on national TV it gets dumped right away. Shows like this makes us think of after life. Christians are being put down because they have FAITH. This is merely what this show is about having FAITH. It's too bad it got cancelled. In my house we were all glued once it came on. We were all great fans. Even my old aged mom was up till this show is over. Missed this show. Wished they put it back on again.

Nobody cares?

Warning: Spoilers
Imagine a small rural town, and a long ago deceased boy comes back to life. The accident should have been local headlines for a long while, long enough for older people to remember the case and the faces. Three possible reactions:It is a work of the devil, it is a miracle or it is a fake. Any of them should have the town in a state of shock that does not appear to happen in small Arcadia. And Word should have to reach local newspapers, radio, State TV and finally nationwide. Besides from several people both at Arcadia nd in Washington DC, everybody walks by Jacob barely taking a glance at him. Simply not believable. Besides that, good thriller, and (at last) one with very few gunshots.

Good show
reginahasty20089 March 2014
The name of the town is Arcadia MO not Aurora it was a good first beginning and I am wanting to watch the next one I love good scifi...I recommend that people should give it a try all new shows start a little slow but after a while they get better although I don't see how... The beginning is a little out there with where he started but the end is amazing. I cant wait for the next one.

I really liked the hometown feel and the characters were really believable and blended well together I love the man that used to be on the 70s show I always forget his name but he is always my favorite.

I love that they used characters from older shows that I recognize and that work well together.

Remake of "The Returned" (Les Revenants) ... miniseries
nicolettemcclure044 April 2014
Warning: Spoilers
I am certain this is taken from the "The Returned" (Les Revenants) the french zombie mini series. Though "Resurrection" initially got my attention, I am thinking it is not suited for more than a season or two. Actually, the French version is so much better! Haunting, starkly beautiful...mesmerizing and brilliantly acted. There are those who don't have the attention span to read subtitles so to you guys I say, you will prefer the Americanized/somewhat syrupy/tacky version.... so typical of American television. To everyone else, "Les Revenants" can be seen right now on Netflix. Once you catch even one episode, you will forget about "Resurrection"... I believe the french version will be picked up for another season.

An Emotional and Thrilling Journey; Reminiscent of the X-Files
pugnator7119 January 2015
After the X-Files TV show left the airwaves in the early 2000s, there was definitely a void left in us who craved stories of the supernatural and government conspiracy. Resurrected has, in a way, filled the void left by Agents Mulder and Scully. As a matter of fact, Resurrected seems to be one long drawn-out episode of my beloved X-Files.

If casting is the key to making a great TV series, then Resurrected definitely hit the ball out of the park. The actors' interpretation of the characters makes me care enough to watch each week to find out what happens to them. Omar Epps and Jim Parrack are definitely standouts for me.

If you liked the mysterious and eerie vibe of the X-files TV series, I believe you will like this Resurrected series as well. An emotional and thrilling journey through the town of Arcadia, Resurrected is quite different than all the other shows on the small screen today.

Season 1 review
benegesserit204 May 2014
Warning: Spoilers
This review contains spoiler, please do not watch it before watching Season 1. This review and the current rating is based on Season 1.

One of the perks of staying in the US for a while is the chance of watching TV shows freshly from the oven. The previews of Resurrection made me really interested in this show because this idea is very-very fascinating. I haven't seen the original French series yet, so this is not a comparison, it's the impression the first season made me have on its own merit.

So far, it is quite disappointing. The first episode was pretty good and the season finale was quite good again, containing all the action that was so disturbingly missing from the rest of the season. Because all the in-between episodes either bored me senseless or just left me contemplating how is it possible to push so many unrealistic reactions of people into 6 short episodes.

My problems are:

  • Why is it that Jacob showed up in the other side of the world while everybody else appeared in or near Arcadia? (Well, maybe we'll get an answer to that one. Of course I don't expect them to reveal everything so early.)

  • Do they seriously let a single agent (from Immigration and Custom Enforcement from all places, with all due respect) handle a problem of such a caliber for such a long time?

  • Why did nobody truly freak out until the season finale?

  • Are you seriously trying to convince me that no one broke the news to the media, to the FBI or to the army (and probably in this order)?

  • Why was everything happening so terribly slowly?

To sum it up: the first and last episodes of the season are pretty good, the rest is pretty much a waste of time. The season finale should have been episode 2. But they did manage to regain my interest, let's see where it goes in Season 2.

Wanted to love it.

Warning: Spoilers
I had scene teasers from Samaire Armstrong on her twitter probably a year ago or so when they were filming and I was intrigued. As a fan of her, I wanted to watch.

The pilot episode was very powerful and moving to watch. I enjoyed it and there was a lot of promise for a continuation of that feeling. Having watched up to the third episode, I don't think I'll feel that way again.

Why is Bellamy allowed to stay still? This is not believable. Wouldn't his bosses order him to return to his desk by now? As for the mystery surrounding the drownings and Caleb, I'm not interested. There's too much back story not being told. Remember, we are thrown into these characters lives, knowing next to little about them. We need more to grow an attachment and to care.

This show took a twist to a bit of horror. It's really not something I want to watch if they take it in that direction. It's a mystery, but one I don't care enough about.

Sorry to say, I won't be watching tonight.

Interesting Sci-fi show
breakbonez16 February 2019
Great Scifi show. I am keeping this review Spoiler free! Watched Season 1 and 2. the actors did a great Job and so did the writers. Season 1 had alot of suspense and Season 2 Had some religious elements to the storyline. Overall great show. Yes it got cancelled After season 2 but felt like there was some closure at end of season 2 while at the same time it gave us a glimpe into where season 3 storyline was going to go if there ever was going to be a season 3. I watched the series on a marathon and the show was interesting enough that i didn't skip any episodes. there was couple weaker episodes on season 2 but it still kept my interest. I read other reviewers who complain about the plot holes. Yes there are a few plot holes mostly revolving around how the towns people reacted towards the "resurrected" and their new situation but it's a SCI FI show! it's not supposed to be true to real life.

Brilliant!
hnt_dnl4 May 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Having just concluded it's short freshman season (only 8 episodes), I can without hesitation say that this amazing new ABC series RESURRECTION (2014) should have serious staying power! Provocative, emotional, powerful, moving, and last but not least, uplifting, this series has a unique quality and perspective in that, rather than focus too much on the sci-fi and mystery elements that permeate throughout, it instead focuses on the human interactions and relationships. This is what makes this show different from shows like "Lost" and "Invasion", where the underlying mystery always seemed to be at the forefront, perhaps at the expense of character. Whereas "Resurrection" puts the characters at the forefront, and leaves the mystery/sci-fi explanations to play second fiddle. When watching an episode of this show, I almost don't care WHY these dead people are returning! I'm just enjoying how the characters are dealing with it!

The series jumpstarts (literally!) with an 8-year old boy named Jacob (played by child-phenom Landon Gimenez in a stunningly convincing performance), who rises from a watery slumber in a Chinese village. Found by the villagers, Jacob is soon turned over to INS Agent J. Martin Bellamy (excellently performed by veteran Omar Epps of "House" fame). Bellamy, a former cop with a tortured past, takes a special interest in Jacob and figures out that he is from Arcadia, MO (the show's setting) and drives him there to reunite him with his parents. Bellamy and Jacob arrive at the home of Henry Langston (brilliantly played by the great Kurtwood Smith of "Robocop" and "That 70s Show" fame). Bellamy tells Henry that he has his son Jacob, upon which Henry responds that Jacob died 32 years ago. A few minutes later, Henry's wife Lucille (superbly played by Frances Fisher in an emotionally-engaging role) and the Langstons are stunned at the resemblance between the young boy and their Jacob. And so the mystery begins!

As the pilot wears on, we are slowly introduced to rest of the show's central ensemble. Soon after the encounter between Bellamy and the Langstons, the town sheriff and Henry's brother Fred Langston (played with stern, sterling bravado and complexity by Matt Craven) shows up and immediately believes this to be a hoax. Jacob is taken to the town doctor, who is also Fred's daughter Maggie Langston (impressively played by newcomer Devin Kelley). Maggie does a check-up of Jacob and everything seems normal. While at the check-up, Jacob runs into an old friend, the town pastor Tom Hale (played with strong conviction and believability by Mark Hildreth). Tom is stunned that Jacob is back and has not aged at all. Jacob indicates that his last memory on the day of his death in 1982 was that he was trying to save his Aunt Barbara Langston, Fred's wife and Maggie's mother, but then he fell in the river and she did shortly thereafter, both drowning.

Later in the episode, we meet Maggie's best friend Elaine Richards (well-played by Samaire Armstrong) and her mentally-challenged brother Ray (excellent work by Travis Young). This ties into another mysterious figure returning, Elaine and Ray's father Caleb Richards (played with unapologetic menace by Sam Hazeldine), a very shady man who died of a heart attack in 2001 when they were both teenagers. The returns of Jacob and Caleb set the stage for the upcoming action in Season 1.

The main reason why this show works is because it almost doesn't seem to care about the mystery behind the returned, but how it affects their families and how their loved ones deal with them upon their returns. We get varying degrees of emotions. In the Langston home, while Lucille immediately embraces Jacob, Henry is reluctant. Similarly, while Elaine accepts Caleb back into her life, Ray is suspicious. And since Jacob died on the same day as Barbara, this opens up old wounds between Fred and Maggie as they have a tenuous relationship. Tom is in turmoil as he must grapple with the reality of both his dead friend's return and the return of someone else very close to him soon thereafter.

Caught in the middle of all of this is Agent Bellamy, who must keep a lid on the mysterious returns in Arcadia, while still investigating the mystery to determine the reason, all the while treading the thin line of the intertwining familial relationships. Bellamy starts to develop strong connections with the Langston family wanting to protect Jacob at all costs, but also developing strong feelings towards Maggie.

Through very believable dialogue, well-conceived characters, and uniformly superb acting, "Resurrection" feels like a show that will be around for a while!
