Triwizard Tournament meets Supernatural
hp1993-739-94778519 August 2013
Warning: Spoilers
First of all: Dean in the Men of Letters cave - perfect scene! He has his own room, preparing delicious burger (his waiting for Sam's reaction = Priceless - like little child waiting for parents'reaction on its drawings. "Wau!" "You're welcome.")

Kevin translates the tablet and found out the first of three tasks - One of the brothers "must survive three tasks. Three extremely dangerous tasks." The first task is to kill a hellhound. To this point, I was really thrilled.

With the arrival on the farm it wasn't as good as it could be, i think another story would be more interesting, but the detection, that Crowley was involved in it, was good.

What I didn't like was the image of hellhounds - I think that people fear of the invisible much more. The imagination can work...

On the other hand, the brother moment was great - it's kind of sad that Dean has the suicidal mood, but in the gesture of trust Sam to do the trials we can see hope.

Good moments of brothers and Kevin, the "farm-story" could be better. 8/10

Bringing a good plot arc for this season...
skjoe-115 February 2013
Warning: Spoilers
This episode had some great elements to it and sets up a new storyline that looks great so far. Sam and Dean get a call from Kevin who has found a way to seal the gates of hell. It appears one of the boys must go through 3 trails for God. Im liking the direction this season is now going. I was put off by the first few episodes and found them rather weak. All the bits with Kevin, Sam and Amelia and even Crowley were just dragging the season down. Although I enjoyed Southern Comfort and Hunter Heroici. The only real interesting aspect was the Benny storyline, had a hint of mystery and darkness to it. I didn't like the tension between Sam and Dean as I find the episodes are strongest when their chemistry is at its best. Overall this episode had a good old supernatural feel to it with a real interesting development into the seasons plot so far. Lets hope it stays like this for the rest of the season...

Tonal problems undermine an otherwise good episode
CubsandCulture7 September 2020
This is the first episode in the shutting the gates of hell trials and in some ways that is why it isn't as solid. Too much is going on in the episode and there's too many different vibes to the episode. The rich family's squabbles are distracting. Worst they are not really funny and take time that could have been used to smooth out the plotting somewhat. Boy do the Winchesters get lucky in this episode. First try and they succeed!

With that being said, the core story developments make sense and give the season a good sense of direction. Best of all this episode has some of the most striking visual effects work in the show's run. The hellhounds are just cool.

The trials and a farmhouse

I like when spn does a different setting, so the house and its family and the challenge was entertaining.

The Beginning of another Sam's pain!
rimailbox13 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
In early minutes, I enjoyed to see Dean's behaviour, he looks happy with their new home. He cleaned up the room, made the food, he looks like an ordinary big brother. It remind me again, that someone who taking care of Sam since baby always Dean. Sam is always Dean's SOS priority, he always tried to replace Sam's pain.

So, since the first I assume that Sam will be the one who running the missions to close the Hell. I have feeling it would be make Sam in unbearable pain again, because it wouldn't so easy to close the huge important place like the Hell. Especially we have Crowley as the king. But, don't worry, we have our clever prophet too, Kevin!

PS : That eyeglasses! Oh, thanks! Pretty rare moment to see them wearing someting like that, can I request it should be one of another their tool beside guns? I just didn't like it because Hellhound so terrible, so transparent and so creep me out when I imagine they exist in my real life. Maybe because I prefer cats than dogs? That eyeglasses will be really usefull in future! :D

Alright I suppose

Warning: Spoilers
This was a fairly decent episode. The family members bugged me quite a bit, as they were all super diverse in a stereotypical fashion. Also the girl that wanted Dean was a bit awkward, literally saying she wanted to have sex, and her accent didn't help matters much more. Sam has undertaken the trials officially, so we can prepare to see an even lamer Sam in the future I bet, as I'm sure this will have tolls to it. Anxious to see what the next trial is, as this one was quite intense. Crowley was conspicuously missing from this episode, despite him being the demon that made the deals with the family. Seems like an oversight of sorts, although it would be hard to not make the episode about him if he showed up.

Foreshadowing the finale
lynpalmer116 February 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Not a bad episode but what really got me was Dean's speech to Sam about why he was doing this one alone, which foreshadows the series eventual finale. Very touching moment, even more so now in reruns after knowing what happens. Sam gets to do a return speech near the end , also touching, especially about Dean finally being so happy about having his own space, also a poignant point in the finale. I wonder if the writers looked back at this episode for inspiration. Cute touch having the girl who wants one last night of sex dancing to I Touch Myself after being turned down by Dean.
