A Fantastic Start!
gab-1471211 July 2021
Right away, I knew Peaky Blinders would be something special. It is a British gangster show that takes ideas from American westerns and gangster films (I see shades of The Godfather and that horse scene with Cillian Murphy), but the show quickly establishes its own identity with its unique visual style and soundtrack choices. You would think for a show set right after The Great War ended, that songs from bands like The White Stripes would not be prevalent here. But I digress. The show gets the costumes and the haircuts right. Those are some ugly haircuts but were the style of the time. The gang also wear razor blades in their hats as part of their outfits. Certainly helps instill fear in everyone! Otto Bathhurst did a solid job directing the pilot. He gave this episode cinematic scope, but also an intimate and personal feeling.

This show was created and written by Steven Knight. This first episode could have been confusing with many wheels in motion, but luckily that was not the case. The lead character is the highly intelligent Tommy Shelby, played brilliantly by Cillian Murphy, but Knight took care to properly flesh out the supporting cast. In other words, each character had their moments to shine. Sam Neill as the hardened Irish agent has a brilliant speech about thirty minutes in that show the type of man he is. Helen McCrory as Aunt Polly, the matriarch of the gang who has some sensibility but hardly a woman to cross. Paul Anderson as the eldest brother, Arthur whom people mistake for the gang leader. Also known for his extra-violent temper. Sophie Rundle as Ada Shelby, the fierce and independent younger Shelby sister. Iddo Goldberg as Freddie Thorne, Tommy's childhood friend and boyfriend of Ada. He also happens to be a communist. There is Annabelle Wallis as Grace Burgess, an undercover agent at the main bar and who Tommy is very interested in. Knight did an incredible job introducing each character and the actors breathed fresh air into them. I really enjoyed the family dynamics within this Shelby gang.

The episode takes place in Birmingham just after the Great War ended. Tommy Shelby (Cillian Murphy) is the leader of his gang known as the 'Peaky Blinders." They make their money from illegal racketeering and the black market. The gang accidentally got their hands on a shipment of machine guns and ammunition. Winston Churchill charges Inspector Chester Campbell (Sam Neill) to retrieve the guns. The sensible Polly (Helen McCrory) urges him to return the guns, but Tommy figures he can use them to his advantage. He fights with Arthur (Paul Anderson) about fixing horse races. His sister, Ada (Sophie Rundle) is in love with Freddie Thorne (Iddo Goldberg) who is a Marxist and wants to organize a strike because of the last pay cut. As Campbell looks for the missing guns, he also considers people like Freddie to be just as bad with the Russian Revolution right in the rearview mirror.

Overall, this premiere episode has me hooked on this series, which is a British gangster show with American influences. It has its own flavor in terms of visual style and music. Some choices that are made could seem odd at first, but everything works out for a reason. The performances are excellent. There could have been a danger of overacting, but those concerns are put to rest immediately. Cillian Murphy and Sam Neill are excellent, and I cannot wait to see more of their characters. This series begins as innovative, daring, and more importantly-lots of fun!

My Grade: A.

Has "peaked" my interest

Warning: Spoilers
I'll admit to only checking this series out because Hardy's name is attached, but sadly he makes no entry until seasons 3 apparently. Still, I thought this was an enjoyable first outing. The episode takes a lot of time setting things up and seems to be more interested in the long game than delivering immediate thrills, but that is not a bad thing necessarily.

The pilot centers most around Thomas Shelby, a gangster figure at the head of a Birmingham crime organisation. Cillian Murphy has a rich history of representing psychopaths in films, and the trait doesn't fully escape his character here. Thomas plays out as a man equally affected by greed as past war horrors, with his true motivations remaining quite shady. Murphy does great work with the role, injecting the role with a high dose of intensity.

When not focusing on Thomas the episode stumbles a bit. The scenes with Inspector Campbell are all very one-note. He alternates between big speeches and harsh words, making him feel more like a bully than someone looking for justice. The subplot with the crazy PTSD ex marine is very crudely done and is almost comical. Other characters appearing are still too undefined to be really cared for.

Overall I feel this show has a lot of potential. It is a bit melodramatic at times with some clunky one-liners but Thomas is an interesting character and the fight between the inspector and Thomas could prove to be a compelling one. It's hard to say what direction the show will favor but based on the pilot I would say this might definitely be worth looking out for.

There is potential

Warning: Spoilers
I heard a lot of good things of Peaky Blinders so I decided to give it a shot.

The pilot was a good first episode as it gave us an introduction to the characters and the conflict of the story. If it would be an episode in the middle of the season then I would not rate it as high as an 8, maybe a 6.

One of the things that I found really unfitting was the Western music. It just doesnt fit at all to the genre and historical setting.

The show with its characters definetly has a lot of potential. However some aspects were foreseeable (the bartender being an undercover cop) I still think there will be a lot of chracter development. I think a conflict we will see is between Arthur and Thommy for the leadership of the Peaky Blinders.

It seems like a really high-budget production. Excited to see how they will show more of the world with its different groups (Asians, Italinas, Communists)

Great Intro

Warning: Spoilers
So this episode is the 'pilot' in which we're supposed to be introduced both main and secondary characters as well as a tease at least of a coming or up-and-coming plot. This is what I expected from Episode #1, plus I wanted to experience the great setting and visual realization from this show as it looked amazing from the outside.

So we're introduced the setting, poor neighborhood in England right after WWI, causing solid post-war (mental) consequences, industrial revolutions, working strikes, gangs and mafias, sport betting, government vs. groups, etc. Those are plenty of subjects that will probably be addressed throughout the show and have actually been in this episode. We are also shown the group separation that was extremely important back then, as Italians, Industrial Workers, Communists, Asian, etc. all live their own separate life trying to avoid problems between each other.

Both Shelby brothers are performed by extremely good actors (especially in this episode) and really fit well into this performance.

I must say this episode is still a pilot, and since this show is not based on any apocalypse or in need of a direct explanation of the current setting, a pilot is not supposed to get any shocking/touching moment, we just want to get a sneak peek of the plot plus a solid introduction to characters and their purpose.

I love the characters already and I expect good character development on this show, all chasing their own personal quests with own personal motives, this will be good.

We get the smart gangster with his violent & pressured older brother defending their group the 'Peaky Blinders'. We get the interesting Communist leading groups to strikes, in a relationship with the Blinders' sister. Then there is the even more interesting villain, the police officer alongside his sexy, strong partner playing the bartender. I don't know as this is just the first episode, and I realize as this is an historic show rather than a fictional show, our love for characters is what matters. Character development, visual, thrilling moments and historical references are what the criteria I will be looking for this show, this is what it must offer us.

Outstanding quality

I wanted to rate an 8 here first, because i don't give 10s and in comparison to other shows it isn't the best you'll ever see. But then I broke different factors for rating apart and compared to most other shows it's brilliant:

Cast/acting: 9,5 of 10, except from Sam Neill, every single character was portrayed almost flawlessly. Great acting and the actors just matched the characters perfectly.

Music/atmosphere: 9 of 10. The music fits very well. Underlines the visually created atmosphere as a good soundtrack is supposed to. And by means of a more modern and at times energizing feel to it, it delivers the action and the feeling you're supposed to feel excellently,

Setting/stage props: 10 of 10. I wondered just how they did it. Everything looks like you'd imagine Birmingham in 1919, just a bit shinier and more atmospheric.

All in all the show does what it wants to do very nicely.

A Deep, Engrossing Saga

Don't be mistaken: this is a political show very much among the lines of the European factions post-WW1. There is both love and deep, deep hatred. The "Peaky Blinders" simply want a return to normalcy but are forced to fight against the British.

Now I finally decideret to watch this show, of which, i have only heard praise... and I can see why! Already in this first episode i can tell how well made it is! I can see how much love amd care was put into it!

It does a really great job of taking us back in time to Birmingham post-world war 1! Very believable invironmemt and characters! The story is also gripping and develops quickly It makes for a great watch that hooks you in! It is no stranger off violence either!

The actors are also doing a great job with some note-worty names and great talent! Also great direction and soundtrack! Creates an experience and atmosphere of its own!

Glad I decided to watch this show!

Style Meets Perfection

Warning: Spoilers
So the Show starts with people speaking in Chinese. This is not what you expect when you are watching a British Television Show. However when the show starts with Asian people running and hiding all over the place when a Man on Horse (the enchanting Cilian Murphy) came in their neighborhood. The Television show is set in Birmingham England 1919. A year after the World War 1 ended. So we got a hint that the aftermath of the world war 1 will clearly going to be the essence of this television show. I could not help but listen to the background music that was wonderful. Moving forward we see that the man on Horse needs a woman and he clearly is the lord around here as the Asian man brings that woman who do some kind of "Powder Trick" on the horse. Now cut to the next scene we see that some kind of construction is going on and we get into the adobe of the man in the horse. He caught the young boy smoking as he chatted with him. As I was about to get bored of this extreme meticulous details, Steven Knight (the creator of the show) suddenly surprised me by writing a "booker lord" in Birmingham. As the man on the horse opened the door we entered in an entirely different world of Book Keeping as it happened in 1919. The man on the horse talks to his brother (who was furious about the "Powder Trick") on the horse. We got to know that the man on the horse is going to be the next owner of "Peaky Blinder".

It is a story about 101 years back to our times. Although the dressing style of these men were brilliant. Undoubtedly Europe was the most progressive nation in terms of fashion (maybe in terms of chaos also). Now in the next scene we see a train running towards and then I see a face that I suddenly recognized just by his eyes. He was none other than "The Dinosaur Man" (Sam Neill, protagonist of "Jurassic Park Series"). As the dino man stare at the "Prime Robbery Suspects" file, we get to see the details about the brother of the man on the horse and the man on the horse himself. There names were neatly written from a typewriter in the file, "Arthur Shelby" (played by "Paul Anderson") the founder of the Peaky Blinders, "Thomas Shelby" (played by "Cilian Murphy") the winner of two gallantry awards in World War 1. In the next seen we see a man who was leading a strike with a bunch of men cheering for their leader. Also the director does a really good job by revealing the names of the main characters in the prime robbery suspect file carried by the dino man. So next we see who this man is, he is described as , the 'agitator' named Freddie Thorne (played by "Iddo Goldberg"). . In the next scene we get to see that Thomas "tommy" Shelby goes to a bar and meet Freddie where he pointed out the similarities between him and Freddie. I was just waiting for the mention of "Winston Churchill" as he was the major historical character in all over the British mainland (also he was "the secretary of state for war" and "secretary of state for air" at that time). Jus when I thought, the name came out of Freddie's mouth and then I thought weather they will mix Churchill with all of this or will they just mention him? As the story progressed we see from the eye of the dino man that Birmingham is nothing but a pool of corrupted people who are scared of the Peaky Blinders. Than a lady is introduced by pointing to a young lad and slapped him. We got to know in the next scene that they both were none other than the part of "Shelby" family or "the peaky blinders". Till now the dino man has not spoken a single word out of his mouth, only his expression was adequate for saying it all. Now he address a bunch of cops that this city is filled with all the corrupted people who are afraid to stand against the "Peaky blinders", and he introduced a battery of other men whom he trust. I loved his line "I don't trust any of you, because you have to earn my trust..." . Also a family meeting between Shelby's took place and we got to know that Thomas "tommy" Shelby is hiding something from his family. As the story rolls forward The dino man, charged "Arthur" Shelby and tortured him for the information on the robbery. But as he was unaware of any of it and The dino man concludes he is telling the truth he let him go. We see a lady in a green dress (which was again a magnificent full length dress carried by a confident woman. He goes to the same bar where Tommy meets Freddie, and asked for a Barmaid Job and eventually got it by displaying her worth. The shelby's got a sister who is having a romantic affair with Freddie, which I suspect he taking advantage of getting to know the inside family meetings of Peaky Blinders. Thomas then told the old lady which is having a strong position in "the peaky blinders" about the crate which is carrying a whole lot of ammunition and machine guns which by mistake has gotten into the hand of Thomas "tommy" Shelby. When the old lady confronted tommy that he has returned the Ammunition to the police he revealed that he had hidden the ammunition under his captivity. Which I think is a good move as it will boost the power he already have over Birminghim. Moving forward we get to know that the Barmaid is nothing but a spy planted by Campbell to find out about the operation of "peaky blinders", I don't found this surprising as I got a feeling that this woman is not what she is showing. As the story progresses we get to know that Thomas "tommy" Shelby is having nightmares about the war with his two soldiers , one of them was Freddie and one of them is having regular panic attacks. The friend who was having panic attacks killed an Italian and now Thomas "tommy" Shelby showed the Italian's brother that he killed his friend by firing a gun on his head. It was like an orchasterated song. This TV show is a very peaceful treat to eyes (which is very ironical because the show evokes violence at every second it airs), moving forward we see that he only faked his soldier assassination (as he lives!! Which was a surprising moment for me!!) to give him another job in London. Now tommy comes to his office and his brother Arthur with rage accused him that his "powder trick" worked and the horse won the race, which then he with his magnificent character told his brother that yes he is going to win all the races and when we are ready he is going to lose, this captivates me with the acting skill of Cilian Murphy. In The last scene I was confused whether the air was filled with the constant ash of wood which is filling the air of Birmingham every now and than or was it the snow. Whatever it was it was perfectly suited as the Barmaid (who is a spy) and Tommy shared a moment of eye contact and than with style Tommy faded into the screen. Looking forward to the story of Peaky Blinder, where it is going to end....

CINEMA !

Watching Peaky Blinders for the first time and I can easily say that it kicks off with an absolute banger.

Visually amazing, the story goes forward quickly, complex relationships and strong building to the plot.

Wow it's just could have released at theatres and no one can tell it is a tv show, the acting is very promising with Cillian Murphy already catching the light as Thomas Shelby.

It's a gangster tv show bringing a little bit of the Godfather vibes and inspired by westerns, Also the soundtracks are beautiful and deeply immersed with the ambiance of that era.

Overall this pilot is one of the most complete and finest first episodes of a tv show I've ever got to see.

Okay...so did this pilot blow me away?

Let's see.. Good acting. Good music. Cilian Murphy is Tommy, leader of the Peaky Blinders, a unit that fought for the English in France, WW1, that now is on the grift wherever the hell they are in England now.

I liked the ep. 7/10 to start. Let's see how it builds.

"Not my Cup of Tea"
carmenjulianna29 November 2020
After the 1st ten minutes of watching this new drama, I knew I couldn't sit threw hours and hours of this violent, non-stop clichè after clichè dialogue... I believe the characters played, need to become interesting enough to have the ability to draw in the viewer, but, when all you hear is aggressive dialogue and violence constantly; it becomes tedious! Some of the actors are mostly clichès and predictable.. I honestly found it boring and quite repetitive...

What a cool series...

Warning: Spoilers
People believe in witches in this time so he had a "witch" do a spell on the horse and made it public so the poor ppl can see her do the spell. The horse wins, then more ppl will start betting on the horse. This was the first win. But the more the horse wins the more people will bet. NOW by the third time when he has basically all of Birmingham betting on this "magical horse" he will have the horse LOSE. Once the horse lose all the ppl of Birmingham who betted on the horse which will be prolly a shiiiii ton of people. Will have to pay the Shelby's or will be in their debt. Which is the main family in the series. The business the Shelby's own "illegally" is a betting shop. Which means to even bet they gotta go through the betting shop that the Shelby's own. Long story short, the Shelby's would get mad bread from everyone in Birmingham if this goes correctly. This show is so good, once you get to know the characters you will be hooked. The story and plots are so well written. Not many shows are set between ww1 and ww2 and especially not in Birmingham UK which is where i am from. Hope you keep reacting to it.

Dissapointed by the Pilot
nicofreezer9 June 2021
Im expecting a lot out of this show and I know its thé kind of show to take its time. But still a Pilot need to be great and a Pilot need to give way more than the other episode. And for 45 minutes this episode is just boring mostly, annoying characters, like that woman just here to be a progressiste show... There is Always a woman, not really realistic... Only the last 10 minutes raise the bar and find that too easy. Those show who only are good in the last 10 minutes of every episodes, like "Murder" " Casa de papel" Hope this show is different and truly Hope it will get better My vote 6.75/10.

"Peaky Blinders" has just 'de-peaked' my interest
matthewboulter28 February 2018
I heard this show was really good, so I tried it. After watching the pilot, I don't have any interest in watching anymore. Very derivative, with uninteresting characters and plot. The biggest problem I have with it is that it is so incredibly pretentious; it is trying so hard to be as good as an HBO show, that it makes me hate it even more. It's pretentious because random creative decisions are made for the sake of them being 'cool'. It feels like the filmmakers behind it just saw a bunch of really good shows, picked out things they liked and slapped it altogether to create this.

  • every scene ends and/or begins with electric guitar in the tune of westerns, then fades out after 10 seconds. It sounds cool, but doesn't fit
  • first scene is especially weak, given that it sort of 'homages' westerns (music + everyone hiding behind things + character on a horse, walking slowly down a street). I expected the show to be sort of satirical then. Except the show isn't, which makes me think it basically ripped it off because the filmmakers thought it looked and sounded cool. They didn't understand that this cliché has become so iconic that it can only be used for satire nowadays.
  • no character development or clichéd character development. I can't tell you a single interesting or unique thing about any of the characters.
  • cinematography, while pretty at first glance, comes off as very random. Sometimes there are inserts of a character we haven't even been introduced to yet, looking at another character for up to 10 seconds, while that other character is talking. Lots of reaction shots-especially annoying cliché of character smirking at something that another character says, in order to try and make the audience laugh. Same use as a laugh track in sitcoms: doing the laughing for the audience, at a 'joke' that isn't usually even funny. 2-3 insert shots of things in reflection off surfaces (random).
  • scene of Sam Neill coming into the town by carriage has been in about a hundred other movies/tv shows

I could go on forever...

The music?
arclinecreative29 April 2020
Just finished binge-watching all seasons of Boardwalk Empire and thought I'd give this a try. I don't know if I can get beyond the music - so wrong for that era. It detracts from the mood and general feel. Great scenery - seems authentic. Then you throw in music from 80 years later and it just seems out of sorts.

A bad beginning
yavermbizi7 June 2021
My overall rating of "Peaky Blinders"'s Season 1: 5/10.

The amount of clichés boggles the mind. The dialogues and character behaviours are incredibly stupid. No subtlety or intelligence is noticeable. The only saving grace is the charisma of the actors.

So as the rest of the season is better than that, it can only be said that this pilot episode fails at its job, at piquing any interest, unless the viewer had already committed to finishing the season, like I had done.

Weak start
zwiktuut13 June 2023
For a series that has an 8,8 average score i would expected much more in the first episode. When i came out 10 years ago i also tried to watch it. Back then i didnt got me hooked and i wondered off.

I will give it another chance this time because everybody is lyric about it and maybe i need to give it more chance than 1 episode. So i hope my patience will be rewarded.

Pro's

Realistic enviorement.

Unpredictable.

Music.

Bloody.

Con's

Slow paced.

Doesnt got my hooked after one episode.

Some overreacted characters (the police officer acts if he is Hitler) (Tommy has PTSS but he acts like a kid).
