The right mixture of fun and scares
marcgreenman25 July 2020
I was a bit surprised by this episode as Arthur is very ready to use magic, he uses the horn even when Merlin warns him of the dangers. This goes against everything we know about Camelot, where magic has often caused trouble and where attitudes are still suspicious. There are consequences of course and trouble arises very quickly. Head is excellent in his guest appearance, you really do wonder whether Arthur will do what is right or whether he will succumb to temptation. This is the whole point of the story, to believe in yourself and to stand by your friends and your values. Uther gives people a hard time attacking and abusing them. Another important message is also featured in this episode: the dead return to cause trouble when we look back to find them. Sometimes looking back is the worst thing that you can do and you have to stay on course. This episode was a lot of fun, but also reminded us that this series can be scary when it needs to be although not too much, this is family viewing not a horror series. Merlin is one of the best repeats on television right now, and one of the best shows on any channel period.

Most things are perfectly balanced and like the title says, this is one of the best episodes in this show if you ask me.

Emotionally this is a 10

Sometimes you can create a powerhouse episode with just a few characters, that is the essence of drama.

Johnny Come Latelys will not "get" this one. As Arthur seeks to gain emotional closure for the death of his father, the audience also seeks closure because Anthony Head's character ironically was allowed to leave the story without ever being told off.

So everyone wins.

Head, who was merely annoying for most of the early episodes (blame the script, not Head) gives the performance his life as the man who may well have inspired the term "Daddy Issues."

PS -- given the way the producers like to save money on one story so they can go all LAWRENCE OF ARABIA on another, I am betting something big is coming.

It was Uther, in the hallway, with the candlestick

Enjoyed the spooky vibes this episode gave off, and fun to see old Uther back in action. Merlin and Arthur have good chemistry in this episode as the dynamic duo. Decent storyline and acting.

Sensitive Episode
RECB33 January 2024
This is a fine and strong episode to the series. The crew did an alright job in creating this episode. The special effects that were added was great. The storyline of this episode really helped expose the characters more. It seemed like the storyline of this episode was strongly relatable to all viewers. I definitely found this episode relatable. No one in my life approves of anything that I do. It really is highly disappointing. I have always been alone, depressed, and hated all my life. This episode reveals to viewers that everyone has a choice on how to do things in their own way. I do not have that freedom. This is an alright and sensitive episode to the series.
