The long-in-development, at least from a post-production point-of-view, action comedy “Hidden Strike” has its first trailer, which you can watch above. That means the Jackie Chan/John Cena team-up flick, which was shot back in 2018, may finally reach cinemas or at least VOD. The film, initially titled “Snafu,” became a consistent victim of changing circumstances but external and internal.
The film was green-lit and shot amid a resurgence specifically in China for Jackie Chan-fronted actioners like “Kung Fu Yoga” and “Skiptrace.” The latter was also a (partially) English-language romp starring Johnny Knoxville in a clear attempt to recapture some of that “Rush Hour” or “Shanghai Knights” magic from the late 1990s and early 2000s.
“Skiptrace” earned $131 million in 2016 while the former globe-trotting adventure film “Kung Fu Yoga” earned $256 million in 2017. “Since then, “The Climbers” earned $174 million in 2019, but Covid obviously put a damper on such robust earnings for a moment.

“The Cell” director Tarsem Singh is making his global comeback with his first Indian film, “Dear Jassi,” based on a true story with plot details being kept under wraps.
Singh made his name with visually dazzling fantasy films like “The Cell,” “Immortals” and “Mirror, Mirror” but has been mostly out of action since helming the single 10-episode season of NBC’s “Emerald City” in 2017. “Dear Jassi” will be his first feature since “Self/Less” in 2015.

Paul Lindsay was a former FBI agent and Vietnam veteran who sought to utilize his investigative and military expertise in creating a series of espionage novels, published under the pseudonym Noah Boyd. Unfortunately, that effort only got as far as a second volume before Lindsay died of leukemia in 2011. The first one has been in feature development since that year, initially as a vehicle for Gerard Butler. It’s Aaron Eckhart instead who assumes the mantle of Jack Reacher-like hero Steve Vail in “The Bricklayer,” a screen translation that appears to take considerable liberties with the source material, likely to take advantage of locations and resources afforded by its multinational funding.
The result, largely set in Greece, is an entertaining thriller that constitutes one of globe-trotting director Renny Harlin’s better recent joints, alongside Chinese productions “Bodies at Rest” and “Skiptrace.” Handled in his best slick, colorful, fast-paced fashion, it...

Hollywood has long been accused of pandering to China – soft-pedalling in order not to give offense. Now comes a study by Hong Kong production company Dragon Horse Films attempts to quantify just how far Western entertainment conglomerates are self-censoring.
The company says that there is a correlation between the size of the Chinese box office and the number of Hollywood decisions to avoid negative Chinese story lines and characters.
It says that a tipping point occurred in 2011 when the Chinese theatrical box office exceeded $2 billion. That put it on a par with grosses from Japan and on course to become the world’s second largest B.O. territory. China’s B.O. last year hit $6.4 billion and is now forecast to approach $8 billion in 2017.
“With the rising importance of the mainland Chinese box office, Hollywood and Hong Kong producers routinely self-censor stories to appease Beijing’s strict censorship rules,” says...

British Hollywood director Simon West has been ordered by a Beijing tribunal to return $200,000 in directors fees to Chinese firm Hongmaisui Hms Entertainment in a legal dispute over an unmade 2014 film.
Hms filed the case with the Beijing Arbitration Commission back in 2016, after the production was derailed by difficulties in procuring a visa for West that left him unable to enter China for pre-production at the scheduled time. The commission issued its award decision in December 2019.
As of late July, however, West — who is best known for U.S. action films like “Con Air” and “Lara Croft: Tomb Raider” — has yet to pay the determined sum and has stopped communicating on the matter, the Hms side says.
On Tuesday, the company officially filed an arbitration petition in Los Angeles to get the American legal system to recognize the Chinese decision, allowing them to pursue and collect on West’s U.

For the action movies fans, Renny Harlin has earned the status of a living legend with the films he made during the 90s: “Die Hard 2” (1990), “Cliffhanger” (1993), “The Long Kiss Goodnight” (1996) and “Deep Blue Sea” (1999). For the last five years, the Finnish-American filmmaker has been mostly working in mainland China and Hong Kong where he has helmed three films so far. “Skiptrace” (2016) was a reasonably fun action-crime-comedy starring Jackie Chan and “Jackass'” Johnny Knoxville, while “Legend of the Ancient Sword” was an expensive flop. His latest movie, “Bodies at Rest”, is an addition to the collection of Christmas-set action flicks, which premiered at the last year’s edition of Hong Kong International Film Festival, before a short festival tour that included Far East Film Festival in Udine, Italy and Edinburgh International Film Festival. The theatrical release focused on the Far East markets ensued. The film is now available on DVD,...

It’s no secret that Asians are woefully underrepresented in American Cinema, but that thinking has started to shift in the last few years. This is especially true afer the majority-Asian cast Crazy Rich Asians became the most successful rom-com in decades. According to Vice.com, there are a slew of blockbuster movies coming out soon with Asian lead characters. We’re even about to see our first Asian Marvel Super Hero. In the past, Hollywood has seen backlash for constantly whitewashing films, removing Asian actors from source materials and casting white Americans to take their places. It seems that Hollywood is starting to see the power of the Asian American market. Here are 6 Asian actors who have appeared in gambling and casino movies over the years.

The Japanese actor Takao Osawa was so moved by Masashi Sada’s popular song “The Lion Standing in The Wind”, that he approached the songwriter with a suggestion of adapting it into a novel. Not only that Sada made Osawa’s wish come true, but he also wrote the movie script based on the novel inspired by the song, thus, one would believe – completing the circle. “The Lion Standing Still” – all forms of it – is based on a true story about Koichiro Shimada (Takao Osawa), a Japanese doctor who in 1987, motivated by a long-time medical missionary in Africa Albert Schweizer, left the university hospital in Nagoya to join the research team of The Institute of Tropical medicine in Kenya, the country where he found his tragic end. Indefatigable Chinese action star Jackie Chan dodged a real-life natural disaster this week when a mudslide hit the production of his upcoming film “Project X.”
Chan said that filming was interrupted in the last few days when the weather changed and triggered a mudslide. Crew and equipment were caught in the landslip. “Our crew were caught in a massive mudslide! A few of our production trucks were stuck in the river of rushing mud,” Chan said on social media.
Nobody was seriously injured, though clearly some people were badly scared by the near-miss. Chan took to Facebook, Twitter, his own blog and Chinese social media to confirm the event and reassure fans that all were safe.
The film is produced by Chan’s Sparkle Roll Media and China’s Talent International. Few cast details have been revealed other than Chan himself and American former pro-wrestler John Cena.

A new TV spot has been released for Jason Statham's upcoming giant shark film The Meg. This movie looks so over-the-top and ridiculous that there's no doubt it's going to be a crazy fun film. It's Jason Statham taking on a giant ass shark! What's there not to be excited about!
In the film, a deep-sea submersible—part of an international undersea observation program—has been attacked by a massive creature, previously thought to be extinct, and now lies disabled at the bottom of the deepest trench in the Pacific…with its crew trapped inside. With time running out, expert deep-sea rescue diver Jonas Taylor (Jason Statham) is recruited by a visionary Chinese oceanographer (Winston Chao), against the wishes of his daughter Suyin (Li Bingbing), to save the crew—and the ocean itself—from this unstoppable threat: a pre-historic 75-foot-long shark known as the Megalodon. "I'm gonna make this thing bleed."
Warner Bros. has released a new international trailer and poster for The Meg, which awesomely centers around Jason Statham fighting a giant-ass shark known as the Megalodon. In real life, Statham is probably the only person in the world that could handle a situation like this.
There's a good amount of new footage in this trailer that gives us a proper set up of the story and a lot more shark chomping action!

“Uncle Drew” was a fun movie to make. That’s not a shot in the dark, but a fact. The credits of director Charles Stone III’s latest film shows the cast and crew in good spirits, cracking jokes and goofing around on set.
It’s a healthy mix of comedy and basketball, Lil Rel Howery making people laugh, and Nate Robinson dunking on Shaquille O’Neal. It’s in those closing credits that the film crystallizes into what it wants to be: a movie about a bunch of people who love basketball and trash-talking in equal measure. This is the film Stone (“Drumline”) probably wanted to make. What he actually made is something else.
Drawing from a script by Jay Longino (“Skiptrace”), we open on Dax (Lil Rel Howery), a mid-30s Foot Locker employee whose passion for basketball has translated into entering a street-ball tournament at Rucker Park in Harlem.

China will launch a tax evasion investigation into the country’s film and TV industries, the bureau for taxation said in an official statement posted to its website Sunday.
The crackdown was prompted after a row erupted between Chinese TV presenter Cui Yongyuan and superstar actress Fan Bingbing, star of X-Men: Days of Future Past and Skiptrace.
Last week, Cui posted images of multiple documents on a social media account that he claimed were copies of different contracts signed by the actress for the same job. Fan has denied any wrongdoing and hired lawyers to defend her, but the well-known local practice of signing multiple contracts for the same job — known as so-called “yin-yang” contracts, in which a contract of lower value is the one declared to the authorities to avoid taxation — has sparked the state crackdown.

Iconic European animated character Miffy is set to become the star of a live-action feature film made for Chinese audiences.
The move follows an agreement between Netherlands-based publisher and rights holder Mercis, Chinese producer Beijing Wd Pictures and Italy’s Orisa Produzione.
The Miffy character, a rabbit who likes to draw and play with friends, was created by Dutch cartoonist Dick Bruna, who died last year. With more than 120 books published and 85 million copies sold since 1955, “Miffy“ has become particularly popular in parts of Asia, including China and Japan. TV series and an animated film, released in 2013, have followed.
“With an international team of visual artists, we will spend the next months working on the 3D design of our Miffy,” said Frank Padberg, business development manager of Mercis. The live-action film is expected to start production in early 2020.

"Pleased to eat you." With movies such as The Shallows and 47 Meters Down, we've been experiencing a shark-aissance in recent years, and Warner Bros. is looking to bring the water-based subgenre to a whole new level with the first official trailer for The Meg (based on Steve Alten's 1997 novel), complete with enough one-liners to hold fans over until the movie's August 10th release:
Press Release: "Jason Statham (“Spy,” “Furious 7,” “The Expendables” films) and award-winning Chinese actress Li Bingbing (“Transformers: Age of Extinction,” “Forbidden Kingdom,” “The Message”) star in the science fiction action thriller “The Meg,” directed by Jon Turteltaub (the “National Treasure” movies, “Last Vegas”).

For veteran Hollywood filmmaker turned Beijing transplant Renny Harlin, Chinese-language movie making has become much more than just a fleeting infatuation.
Harlin was a Hollywood darling during the 1990s thanks to his action hits Die Hard 2, Cliffhanger and The Long Kiss Goodnight. But after a couple of expensive misfires — Cutthroat Island and Deep Blue Sea — the phone began to ring far less frequently. That changed after Harlin came to China in 2014 to direct the Jackie Chan action-comedy Skiptrace, co-starring Fan Bingbing and Johnny Knoxville.

While the lingerie shot from debutant Nitya Mehra's Baar Baar Dekho which releases this Friday has been removed, scenes showing Nawazuddin Siddiqui selling male lingerie in Freaky Ali which also opens this Friday, have been left uncut by the censor board. The Cbfc (Censor Board Of Film Certification) earlier removed a shot of a bra from Baar Baar Dekho which releases on the same day as Freaky Ali. A source close to the development wonders what signals the Cbfc wants to send out by their selective disapproval of innerwear scenes. "Are they saying it's okay to have men's lingerie but not women's? If that is the case then why has a bra shot been allowed in the new Jackie Chan starrer Skiptrace? Are we to believe that female lingerie can be shown in non-Indian films and not in Indian films? Baffling, to say the least," says the source. Be...

Will Skiptrace be remembered as a seminal Jackie Chan, Renny Harlin or even Johnny Knoxville classic? No. This Englishified Chinese import is silly beyond its cultural appropriation, and as unexpected as it is witty (which is not very much). Numerous scenes are driven by Knoxville referencing his “ding dong” while Chan punches thugs in their respective “ding dongs,” so we’re not even talking Walking Tall sensibilities – but with Chan involved, at least we’re getting an honorable approach to poetic action choreography. Sure, Chan might be striking pelvic regions with no remorse, but sequences flow and aren’t drenched in the ugliness of Harlin’s The Legend Of Hercules grossness. For what Skiptrace is, it never re-writes the mold – but maybe it doesn’t have to given the involved talents?
Kidding. Have the mighty (a questionable descriptor in some cases here) really fallen this hard?

Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, as well as other cool events and things to check out.
This Past Weekend:
As expected, Fede Alvarez’s thriller Don’t Breathe (Screen Gems), starring Jane Levy and Stephen Lang, won the weekend, but it did way more than we predicted, doing better than most movies released in the last weekend of August, winning the weekend with $26.4 million, pretty much double what I predicted. That’s a pretty great testament to the power of Screen Gems’ marketing campaign and that’s more than double what the movie cost to make. Jason Statham’s Mechanic: Resurrection (Summit/Lionsgate) didn’t fare as well as it opened in fifth place with $7.5 million in 2,258 theaters, about where I predicted. Of the more moderate releases, the Obama date movie Southside with You (Roadside Attractions) took in $3 million in around 800 theaters,...

It seems reasonable to expect that a movie called “The Great Wall,” billed as the biggest production in China’s filmmaking history, would feature Chinese actors. Instead, when Universal and Legendary released the trailer for Zhang Yimou’s film, the first face viewers saw was that of the decidedly white Matt Damon, fighting monsters atop the Middle Kingdom’s most famous monument.
In America, it was a call to arms in the battle against whitewashing, that curious tendency to insert Caucasian faces where history tells us there were none. “We have to stop perpetuating the racist myth that only a white man can save the world,” wrote comedian and “Fresh Off the Boat” star Constance Wu in a lengthy, impassioned statement posted to Twitter. “Our heroes don’t look like Matt Damon.”
China had another take. There, the prevailing sentiment over the trespass on their national identity might best be described as a Whatevs.

Montreal — Jackie Chan has had Chris Tucker and Owen Wilson assist him in past buddy-cop comedies. Movies like “Rush Hour” and “Shanghai Noon” were fun to watch, but they always had to rely on the chemistry that Chan would have with his co-star. The screenplays always played to the genre’s conventions, but never had […]

Skiptrace, the Jackie Chan-Johnny Knoxville action comedy directed by Renny Harlin, opened to big numbers in China. To give an idea of how popular Skiptrace was, Tarzan‘s six-day gross in the country was only $27.3M. The opening in China also gives Chan his biggest ever opening in the Middle Kingdom for a…...
