Different And Interesting Take On The Format
Theo Robertson21 August 2013
This is an interesting and different take on the series . Instead of greedy stupid people trying to make a fast easy buck then spending the episode vainly trying to turn the viewers in to grief whores this episode centres around someone who is a genuine victim . Iraqi soldier Latif Yahia finds himself pulled off the frontline in the Iran Iraq war and a counter offensive by the Persians seems like good news in comparison when he meets Uday Hussain son of Saddam who wants him to be a body double for the playboy come psychotic would be dictator . Yahia is somewhat reluctant because he's not an actor by trade but any doubts that he might not be up to the job are dispelled by spending a week in an Iraqi Ba'ath party torture chamber . Unsurprsingly Latif decides to take the job which involves pretending to be Uday Why does someone have to pretend to be an Arab dictators son ? Well he's the favoured successor of Iraq president if anything happened to President Saddam and if you've gassed Kurds , invaded Iran in an unprovoked attack , repressed Shia Muslims because the Iraqi Ba'ath party is drawn from the Secular Sunni minority and constantly purged party members because that's how dictatorship works in Iraq then you'll find there's a lot of people who might want to get rid off you

What this docu-drama does rather well is communicate the pressure Latif was under . Some thespians -dare I say all thesps - enjoy their career and the bonus of fame , fortune and awards is peripheral . Here however Latif playing Uday is literally a matter of life and death and any little mannerism that isn't perfect such as a walk , the way he holds his head , the way he swirls a gun is criticised by Uday , followed by a very violent kicking until he gets these idiosyncratic details correct . Bare in mind Latif has to make public appearances in situations and places where he faces assassination so talk about being stuck between a rock and a hard place and he does survive several assassination attempts where he literally faces death

Being a guest so to speak of the Hussain clan means he has unprecedented access to this fiendish family . Not nice people at all it should be said and while Hitler was a great animal lover and Stalin liked holding parties with free vodka it's difficult to say anything nice about the Hussains ' . If Uday sees a woman who takes his fancy then she becomes his rape toy . This happened to a poor unfortunate victim - at her own wedding . And there's other incidents like this which are also go in to depth in the 2011 feature film THE DEVIL'S DOUBLE . Strangely though the episode ends with a caption suggesting this story is nowhere true as is claimed but when you've got a show that's usually centered around a convicted drugs smuggler trying to gain as much sympathy as possible blaming everyone else except themselves I found this comment to be somewhat disingenuous

Just got a chance to see The Devil's Double.

Just got a chance to see The Devil's Double, great movie! As the first of it's kind I think that they did well, being Iraqi myself ( I left in the early 90's) I find it quite accurate, I can tell it wasn't actually filmed in Baghdad but then who really wants to go there!? For so long I've listened to critics here in the US saying the movie is too flashy or over the top but I lived in Baghdad during that time, believe me we were more O.T.T than that! Iraq in the '80's had everything you could want, night clubs, bars, the best hotels in the world, Sheraton, Le Meridien etc, think of Dubai now, that was Baghdad then. Anyway, I was an officer in a special unit in the palace. So I saw a lot of stuff, it was an open secret that Uday had a double, just like President Saddam Hussein. It makes me laugh when there's controversy after 20 years about whether Latif Yahia's story is true or not, I wonder who they're asking for an opinion, some guy who left Iraq when he was three and has never been to the middle-east let alone Iraq! Or worse still the men who Uday used to call 'friends', it's of no importance really, Iraq as we knew it is gone, President Saddam is dead. Watch and enjoy, historically accurate or not it's one hell of a ride! Oh yeah, if you've ever watched any interview of the real Latif Yahia, that's what Uday sounded like, not as squeaky as they make him out to be in the movie. To capture Uday's brutality they would have had to dial it up a notch or twelve, I had the displeasure of seeing him in action in reality. We had a job to do, pretending we weren't there. Does it glorify Uday, I don't know, I think that's for each person to decide. Am I proud of Latif Yahia for bringing his story to the world, absolutely. Because for each person that tries to rubbish him there are twenty Iraqis who will defend him, he stood up against the regime and in the end he's the winner.

Awesome story

This was one of the best of these episodes that I've seen. The series is well done, but the story teller here, the victim, kept his cool and gave us a clear view what it was like to live under these circumstances. I was on the edge of my seat watching this and listening to the events build. I wish they would show this again, I can't find when another episode of this show is upcoming. Great story. I'm sorry the people of Iraq had to live under these circumstances. These men were clearly sadists who cared nothing for their people. Good riddens. And good luck to the man who suffered this experience.
