Argentina is just Argentina
spuzer5520 November 2012
After watching this episode I was surprised at how good it actually was. The key to its success lies not just in the heartfelt interactions and motivational insight into certain characters, but more importantly in the way it connects all the main protagonists in a profound and elemental way where murderers, cops, villains and antiheroes are all flawed in a sea of moral and emotional gray.

This is achieved through some excellent performances in an episode that was more dark and laid back in tone than usual (though it's not completely devoid of action), as the emotional detachment characteristic of the show and Dexter himself explodes into an undeniable web of human contemplation and soul searching. It is as if Dexter's plans take a back seat to the struggles of everyone around him and we realize that it's all connected. Themes of love, loss, family, belonging and sacrifice are all present as the characters struggle with each other and themselves. In a show that is ripe with moral ambiguity, this is the first episode I can remember that effectively addresses the human condition in a way that paints not only Dexter but those around him as equals- both justifiable and corrupt, weighing instinct and feelings against a moral code.

The show often tries to conclude episodes by summarizing events in a coherent way (some more successfully than others), but for me this episode came together before this point- when Dexter was talking to Isaac at the bar. This pivotal moment unites the narratives of not only Dexter, Deborah and Isaac, but also LeGuerta and Quinn, who are all ultimately left unfulfilled as we realize that their actions are driven by a yearning for something unattainable, belonging to the past, and contradicting the reality of the situation.

This is probably as much as I can say without giving away major plot points. For a show that has been becoming more mundane and less original with every passing season (in my opinion), it is exciting to see season 7 shaping up to be hopefully one of the best of the series.

Everyone Wants An Argentina...
farzad-h19 November 2012
It is truly wonderful how a TV series that revolves around a vigilante serial killer can penetrate deep into the heart. I personally don't just watch Dexter, I also feel for him, and this episode brought about an emotional outpour that I have rarely experienced.

On a technical stand-point, the acting was absolutely marvelous. I'm sure all fans of the series will appreciate the one-on-one conversations between Dexter and Isaac or Deborah. The way this episode deals with the personal life of almost all the main characters is also remarkable.Quinn, Isaac, and even George, the club owner, are among those whose lives and point of view become more clear to us; this episode touches upon as many things as possible with such subtlety that is undoubtedly unprecedented.

The closing monologue is extremely introspective and simultaneously all-inclusive; even I could relate to it, and I think many will as well. It is among the best scenes of Dexter, if not the best. I won't reveal more about it since I don't intend to spoil the fun.

All together, I highly recommend watching this episode.

Things you do for love
telee-kom16 June 2013
There are two scenes in this episode that I've found by far the best of this season, probably of the whole series. I've always cringed about the idea of Debra being in love with Dexter. It just seems too far fetched to me. Until now. Performance of Jennifer Carpenter in this scene was just absolutely outstanding. I just feel the pain she feels, the confusion, the rage. All of it, she delivered this in such a believable way, that it just didn't feel wrong or weird anymore. I was just watching her with my mouth open. For this scene only Jennifer deserves an Emmy.

Second thing was the scene between Dexter and Isaak. My god, this man is, hands down, my favorite bad guy in Dexter. He is such a complex character. He always was such a bad ass and cool motherf*cker but in the scene in the bar you will find out the whole motivation behind his retribution. I was quite surprised actually, but it all makes real sense. Acting from Ray Stevenson was flawless, real standing ovation here as well.

The whole design of this episode was love. Thing people do for love. It was the main concept and it was really beautifully done. I almost lost interest in this series but this episode showed me that I shouldn't give up so easily.

Awesome

OK, I just finished watching Argentina, and I would have to rate it as possibly the best episode from a story aspect I have seen. It's certainly the only episode I have ever written any kind of review over. An episode which is a wonderful insight into Isaac, and equally heartfelt in regards to Debs struggles.

This for me is what Dexter is all about, the demons, the vices, it pushes upon the difference between our instinct as humans to follow our own path and the path that we a directed down. For whatever reason some choices we make though we know are wrong we cannot help but follow. Our deepest urges we are driven down, even when we know the choice of letting go would be much better in the end.

The scene in the Bar, and Debs major conversation with Dex bring this episode to the front of my "favorites". Great little jokes early on to keep you giggling as the plot thickens and then just emotional intensity. Can't wait for next week.

The Best episode so far!
Playbahnosh19 November 2012
Even before the credits rolled I knew I simply HAD to give this episode a review. I watched tons of series but I almost never review individual episodes (I've done that only twice up until now), but Dexter's Argentina deserves it. It can be argued, that the action or the signature crime/ritual murder/puzzle part was just plain absent. Also, Micheal C. Hall's acting felt a little plastic and forced in some places. But from an emotional and story standpoint, Argentina ranks in my Top 3 of all Dexter episodes. It was a really wild roller-coaster ride.

On one hand, Dexter made some of the biggest, stupidest, most obvious mistakes in the entire series to the point of almost breaking character. I was literally cringing/facepalming at many points. Now, I can see these only served one purpose: lurching the plot forward. Which led up to THE best two scenes in the season.

The first one was Deb's breakdown. It was one of, if not THE best performance of Jennifer Carpenter I've ever seen. The dialogue, the weight of her gestures and the genuine emotional filling took it away. I could totally believe she was seriously freaking out. I mean it looked, sounded and felt totally legit, with the little nervous outbursts, the storm of different emotions wanting to burst out to the surface all at once, even the tiniest of things, like how she cramped her fingers together. I mean, I saw many girls freaking out, and this is EXACTLY how it looks like, she couldn't have acted it any better even if she tired to. I don't know how much of that was cold script and how much was ad- libbed, but it was friggin eerie. Maybe she WAS freaking out, I dunno (seeing as she and Micheal C. Hall used to be an item, she no doubt has a reserve to pull from when it came to freaking out at him, even if it was for show). All I can say is: simply amazing!

The second one was the bar scene between Dex and Isaac. Ray Stevenson's performance in that scene was right up to Jennifer's. The "great reveal" didn't hit so hard, since most of us already suspected...that, but the way Ray delivered the whole thing, was just amazing. He gave a tremendous performance as Isaac all through the episodes, but this was his pinnacle moment up to this point. I truly believed the dialogue had real emotional backing for him (as much for Isaac as for Ray himself), and that snippet of script was solid gold. Yes, from a logical, character or story standpoint that scene should've never happened, but I'm still thankful it did. The things said in that scene maybe hit a little to close to home regarding losing loved ones, but that doesn't diminish any of the value in them.

All that, coupled with the ending adds up to one of the most powerful episodes in the entire series so far, and that's saying something.

Magnificent
copperfox17 November 2015
This is by far the best episode in all 7 seasons of Dexter I have so far watched. At some parts the show started to get sidetracked and repeat the same patterns over and over again. It started to be so bad I almost gave up watching. But this episode alone made it all worth it.

Ever since the beginning of the show I have thought that Jennifer Carpenter has been giving the most stellar performance of the cast. And oh my god, did she shine on "Argentina"! That single scene between Debra and Dexter has to be one of the most intense and emotional television experiences I have ever had the pleasure of experiencing. I completely forgot I was watching a TV series and felt all the emotions and scars these people have gone through.

The episode ended with another spectacular scene between Michael C Hall and Ray Stevenson. Season 7 has so far been such an emotional roller-coaster it has to be one of the best seasons of the whole series.

I truly don't have enough words to describe what a masterpiece of TV entertainment this episode was. It goes right in my alltime top 5 TV episodes along with spectacular Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones and The Wire episodes.

Different Types of Love
claudio_carvalho28 July 2014
Dexter has breakfast with Hannah and then he visits Debra to tell that he will not kill Hannah. Further, he tries to convince Debra that she would regret if he killed Hannah. Dexter receives a message telling that Cody and Astor will come with Harrison to stay with Dexter since their grandfather needs to be submitted to a surgery. Jamie goes to Orlando to bring the children and Dexter asks Debra to stay with them and to withdraw the surveillance on Isaak. Debra opens her heart to the astonished Dexter and tells that she was in love with him. Meanwhile George calls the Koshka Brotherhood and convinces them to get rid of Isaak. Dexter visits Isaak's apartment and kills a hit-man that was hired to kill Issak. George blackmails Quinn with an audio of their conversation and Quinn is forced to transport drugs for the Ukraine mafia. Dexter follows Isaak to a gay bar and learns the relationship between Isaak and Viktor. LaGuerta continues her investigation and now Dexter is in her list of suspects.

"Argentina" discloses different types of love among the characters. Dexter and Hannah are in love with each other; Debra discloses her unrequited love with Dexter. Quinn is in love with Nadia and has crossed the line between right and wrong. Isaak discloses to Dexter that Viktor and he were lovers. It seems that soon Dexter will have problem with LaGuerta. My vote is eight.

"That...Would be a Twist"
MovieFinatic19 November 2012
Warning: Spoilers
When it comes to Dexter as a television series, I always expect it to be captivating and brilliant. Season 6 didn't do that for me, but Season 7 has gone beyond my expectations. For me, it almost felt like the second part of the Season is over, here is my logic: Episodes 1-4 were exploring Deborah's new discovery as well as introducing new characters and more. Episodes 5-8 are all about character development (hence being the second part). And the third part should be all about making a endgame for Season 8.

This episode struck me in many ways, when I first started watching it I felt as if it was a bit boring and dull, but after the first 15 minutes everything became more heated and much more interesting for the viewer. I mean we had LaGuerta digging into Dexter's past as well as Deborah's feelings for Dexter. We also has Isaak, the Koshkas, and the Quinn and Nadia storyline which are turning out to be very interesting as we begin the endgame of the season. We even had Cody and Astor return for the episode, which turned out to be a storyline that worked well with what was going on at the time with Dexter's situation.

This episode, titled "Argentina", is all about Dexter finding the place he calls home, or his Argentina. It's all about the truth as that is what this episodes theme was. It really well written, but what really had my breath taken was the ending. It was very emotional, the music and the voice-over were really beautiful and the way it came together was very brilliant.

Overall, this is my second favorite episode of the Season next to Episode 4 Run. I loved everything about it. Even though it wasn't the edge of your seat stuff we saw in Season 4, but this episode was a dramatic emotional roller coaster. When Debra told Dexter her true feelings I couldn't believe it, it was a twist for the episode as I thought those feelings would never return. Well as least this season they are handling it in an appropriate manner.

Argentina.. The Ticking Bomb Explodes..
ShaShank_MovieFreak19 November 2012
Warning: Spoilers
The episode starts off in a rather mediocre pace but slowly takes up speed after half the time.

There isn't much progress story wise except for a delight that you get to see Astor and Cody after a long time and there was a little drama surrounding Astor just like her last screen presence. That scene was handled rather well. The cat and mouse game between Dexter and Isaac continues with an indeed totally unexpected incident.

However, the minutes that stand out are the last fifteen minutes. Believe me, when they started, I literally got the air knocked out of my lungs.

A bomb which none of us probably saw coming explodes in an emotionally unsettling manner. It was a very daring idea and the thing that baffles the most about it is that it explodes without any building up the atmosphere. It just happens. And the ending was good too with a 'yet another' conversation between Isaac and Dexter.

This episode wasn't amazing but the last fifteen minutes more that just make up for it.

Terribly Awesome
nikashvili19 November 2012
Oh, my god. This could be the best episode so far. Thank you Showtime for that. The storytelling was perfect, I liked the stressful moments in the episode.

I've been waiting for Dex's and Deb's talk so long and it happened in the best manner I could imagine. I was like wow.

This show is going more and more complicated and interesting. first time every new episode is better than previous. Definitely best TV Series so currently running.

The case of Bay Harbor Butcher is getting more intrigue. I wonder what Laguerta is going to find. And who's gonna be the next victim, is it Hannah, Laguerta or Deb?

Best episode in the series
mattstenson10 February 2022
I can't stress how good that episode was. Perfect acting and directing. Extremely underrated.

Dexter and Deb had amazing performances, so did Sirko, and we saw a side of joey we never have seen before.

Couple that with the ending scenes; perfection.

They've done it!
fokuro7 January 2013
Warning: Spoilers
THIS is how twists should be done. I might have been too inattentive, because the thought of Isaak being romantically involved hadn't even crossed my mind, really. And it was so nicely done, the revealing was subtle and fit perfectly into the story. So did Deb's break down and her revelation. That was not subtle at all (and it was also an interesting twist, because I thought he had already dropped those feelings when she found out about Dexter's true nature), but how can we talk about subtle when she loves her brother who also happens to be a serial killer dating another serial killer. In Deb's words, that is truly fuc*** up.

This episode was about this, and the place we can all call home, but it also advanced marvelously two other interesting story arcs which I look forward to see where will lead: Quinn's and LaGuerta's. Will Quinn redeem himself by at least taking part of the Koshka brotherhood down with him? It seems there is no turning back now. And will he be able to save Nadia? Oh, and LaGuerta, of course. She is getting dangerously close now, showing us he still has gotten some sharp detective skills in her, and that might mean Dexter's end.

We've all seen Dexter get away with all his murders, including the ones witnessed by Deb in the past two seasons, but now all is falling apart around him. He is torn in his search for love, Deb has her world crumbling like never before, Isaak is driven to get his revenge... It all adds up to one of the best season finales in the show, along with seasons 1 and 4, maybe. Let's hope so.

I am not going to stop seeing Hannah just because she is a murderer..... And my sister wants to kill her
shweta-5165715 July 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I mean, please just have a look at the entire scenario of having this line said!? Did I mention the lead character is talking to his dead adopted father?

Its scenes like this that make for great television. It also makes me break my promise of reviewing Dexter once I am completely done with the show but its just irresistible to not give tribute to such a line and the entire premise of the season that made this predicament arise!

It should also be said that this is the first time we are seeing Dexter blatantly refuse common sense and logic in favour of love. And not even love for this children, or for his sister or obligated love he felt for Rita but just love based on sexual chemistry. It is fitting it comes in the form of a beautiful blonde murderer.

How is this bloody love triangle going to pan out I wonder. This is going to be fun!

1. Kids are back in Miami 2. Deb confessed his love for Dex 3. Dexter and Isaak have a convo

Amazing episode. Some great great dialogue between Dexter and Isaak. Great performances by both actors. Another great dialogue between Deb and Dexter where she confesses her love to him. This episode was overall very well done. The theme of love and the relationships surrounding that, that of Hannah and Dex, Dex and Deb, VIktor and Isaak, Quinn and Nadia... love makes us do something.. extraordinary and we've all seen examples of that. But all of these relationships, however extraordinary, will cost them dearly.

Also, Laguerta consistently chasing Dex down little by little each episode is really bringing the tension up. Great choice.

S7.E8 - A Place to Call Home [9/10]

Warning: Spoilers
(S7. E8) My Reaction / Review for Dexter Season 7 Episode 8 ''Argentina'': Episode 7 was good and I gave it a rating of 9/10. Let's see if this one is better or worse. Deb wants Dex to kill Hannah but Dex doesn't wanna do it. Wow Dex just killed this guy, what about the code though? I mean he was a hitman but still this is not how Dexter works. Dex is so in love with Hannah. So now the Ukrainians want to kill Sirko? Interesting. It's nice to see Astor and Cody again, just like the old times. Wow, Deb tells Dexter that she is in love with him, I didn't see that coming. Sirko is secretly gay? I didn't see that coming. Overall a great episode, my rating is 9/10.
