As a Saturday Night Live fan, Australian writer-director Daley Pearson had a bright idea for a multi-platform comedy series with a fast turnaround, in which audiences participate.
Screen Australia, Screen Nsw and Screen Queensland funded the development of the project and the ABC commissioned a series. The result is 7 Days Later, which will premiere on ABC 2 at 9 pm on October 22 and on social media sites.
The concept seems a recipe for chaos. Seven days before the show goes to air, the producers will announce a key word via YouTube, Instagram, Twitter, Facebook and 2Jjj.
Audiences are then invited to contribute storylines and characters, which Pearson and co-creator Nick Boshier will develop into a script which will be performed by a cast of YouTube identities, with a fair bit of improvisation.

1. The year of mergers and acquisitions
If there is a theme for 2013, it will be mergers and acquisitions as the well-off media players look to strengthen their position.
The hot companies to watch will be Ten, Apn and Fairfax, whose low valuations make them all targets.
Likelihood rating: 7/10
2. No more weekday papers for the Smh and The Age
Last year we predicted that The Age and Smh would shrink to tabloid size. While that now appears set for 2013, the more radical possibility would be to phase out weekday print editions opting to only run the printing press for the popular weekend editions.
Likelihood rating: 4/10
3. Rhonda and Ketut tie
the knot
In a win for the sex tourism industry, an interracial union looks to be on the cards for Rhonda and Ketut.

In this roundup from the Encore and Mumbrella Annual, we look back at the seven biggest viral video hits this year.
1. Dumb ways to die
The most viral Australian-made, brand-funded video of all time, this three-minute message about the dangers of messing about with trains was funded by Metro Trains and created by McCann Melbourne. It hit the front page of Reddit and generated 6m views in its first 48 hours.
2. Gangnam Style – Psy
This is likely to be the most watched YouTube video for some years to come with more than 760m views. Intended as a commentary on the hyper-wealthy district in Seoul, most people probably know it as the horsie dance embarrassingly attempted by many of media’s finest.
3. Kony – Invisible Children
What began as an impassioned 27-minute plea to overthrow an oppressive military tyrant, notching up 80 million views in a day, ended in apathy and alleged public masturbation by the filmmaker.

Australian production company Jungleboys have signed directing brothers Christiaan and Connor Van Vuuren.
The brothers are best known for producing online hits the Bondi Hipsters and The Fully Sick Rapper which led to them creating the one-hour MTV comedy Sick.
They have also created content for brands such as Cadbury, Coke, Sony, Ikea, Cadbury and Amex. The move means the departure of Christiaan from InfinitySquared where he was a writer and creator.
He told Mumbrella: “I still have an awesome relationship with the guys at InfinitySquared but Connor and I want to pursue directing specifically and Jungleboys being more of a traditional production company allows us to do that.”
Chloe Rickard, senior producer at Jungleboys told Mumbrella: “We’ve already shot a bunch of sketches with the van Vuuren brothers for our online series The Elegant Gentleman’s Guide to Knife Fighting.”

The first installment of the ‘Bondi Hipsters do the Olympics’ web series has been released.
Karen Stocks, head of YouTube and Display at Google Australia told Mumbrella: “The Bondi Hipsters are very good at appealing to an audience and having a conversation with that audience. Dramatised drug use is not against our guidelines. We wanted to create lots of content around the Olympics, a wide range of content from multiple viewpoints.”
The four-minute video shows the characters Dom and Adrian stumbling pantless around London, and turning their backs on the fireworks over the Olympic Stadium.
The made-for-YouTube film has gained 10,000 views in two days.
The clip features Dom, played by ex-jc Decaux executive Christiaan Van Vuuren, and Adrian, played by Beached Az creator Nick Boshier, choosing not to attend the Olympic opening ceremony, but instead to “get a bag of pingers and not sleep for fifty two hours.”
The costs...

There are, as one of Dr Mumbo’s colleagues pointed out today, a metric fuck tonne of videos on YouTube.
And Dr Mumbo has noticed a growing trend.
Christiaan Van Vuuren (you may remember him as the Fully Sick Rapper) is involved in every single one.
Bondi Hipsters? That’s him.
Shit psychic? Executive producer and star.
Pam’s Romance and Variety Hour? Produced and directed it.
Desperate Girls Roll Up On Construction Workers? Exec producer.
Eastern Suburbs Mums? Directed and produced.
He’s even in production house Fsm’s sci-fi horror Too Late.
And that’s just videos uploaded in July.
YouTube without Christiaan Van Vuuren would be a cold and empty place.
Dr Mumbo liked him before he was mainstream.
