Will there be any treats for Scooby and Shaggy?...
paul_haakonsen4 October 2022
I sat down here in 2022 to watch the new "Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo!" animated movie with my son, as we both have been enjoying the "Scooby-Doo!" animated movies and series over the years. In fact, I grew up with the animated series on TV back in my childhood, so it is always a blast to return to watch the Mystery Gang on the screen.

Writers Daniel McLellan, Audie Harrison and Laura Pollak put together an enjoyable storyline, which definitely proved entertaining, and also very much felt like a proper "Scooby-Doo!" animated movie. So this was quite enjoyable to watch.

The animation in "Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo!" is good, it looks like the good old classic style that we all love, while it still managed to incorporate new elements into the style. So it was a nice little change added to the animation and art style.

With "Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo!" being an animated movie, of course it is important to have a good voice ensemble. And of course they had that for "Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo!" as well, with the likes of long-time voice actors Frank Welker, Grey Griffin, Matthew Lillard and also Kate Micucci.

If you enjoy the "Scooby-Doo!" franchise, then you will certainly also enjoy this 2022 animated movie from director Audie Harrison. And I will say that this 2022 movie definitely is a suitable animated movie to watch for Halloween.

My rating of "Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo!" lands on a six out of ten stars.

Hit and Miss.

First off, the character of Coco Diablo is insufferable. She's an annoying, unfunny, uninteresting character. Velma's infatuation with her is annoying and the way she acts in the presence of Coco is oddly out of character considering Velma's usually outgoing and nerdy personality. The ending of the movie devolves into literal nonsense. Most of the other side characters are over the top and verge on annoying, and the movie makes jokes at its own expense several times. And it seems ever since Deadpool, movies and shows think it's funny to have a character break the fourth wall and speak to the audience. They don't go quite that far but Scooby Doo makes a remark to one of the villains about the show being named after him. It's out of nowhere and makes little sense. But for the good side of things, the movie revisits multiple classic golden and silver era Scooby villains, both in and out of their disguises. It's cool to see the old villains getting screen time in new projects, even though they were reduced to bit parts. The new villains (with the exception of Coco) are decent characters. I liked the idea of a group of ghosts that were the complete opposite of Mystery Inc. The idea of the Scooby Gang going up against evil versions of their selves is fantastic, but not quite explored as much as it could've been. The redesign to the Mystery Machine is an odd choice but it keeps things fresh. It's almost an homage to the Munsters' Koach. And I love the subtle Easter eggs hidden throughout the movie. Like in Trevor's shop, you see Freddy Krueger's striped sweater. It's a middle of the road movie. Some good laughable moments, some terrible unfunny Gen-Z humor. As a Scooby Doo movie, it serves its purpose, although being mildly disappointing.

Warning: Spoilers
Coming from a true-blue Scooby-Doo fanatic I can tell you that this movie is definitely different than anything else in the franchise. This movie is far from terrible, but still did not have most of the charm that any of the better movies had. The dialogue was hilarious, but the plot was a bit weak, even considering some of the crazy plots the gang has thwarted before. To be honest I thought the animation style looked creepy and unflattering.

There were also some inconsistencies based on the rest of the franchise that made it a little harder to follow. One of the biggest things that struck me was how all of these criminals had managed to even find Coolsville when most of the franchise has thrived on the idea of travelling across the country and even the world to find their mysteries. As proud as I want to be of the franchise for being so modern, it was a little jarring for Velma, my favorite character, to be seen with a crush on another woman. I didn't feel like it lined up with her character in the rest of the franchise.

Trick-or-Treat Scooby-Doo may not be outstanding, but it's a fun addition to the Scooby-Doo universe
kevin_robbins24 October 2023
My daughter and I recently enjoyed Trick-or-Treat Scooby-Doo (2022) on Max. The plot revolves around Mystery Inc. Taking a vacation and slowing down their case solving activities since their arch-nemesis has been arrested, and business is quiet. However, their trip is disrupted by some mysterious ghouls, leading them to consider seeking help from their former foe to uncover the truth.

Directed by Audie Harrison (Uncle Grandpa), the film features the voices of Frank Welker (Mortal Kombat), Grey Griffin (Bumblebee), Matthew Lillard (Scream) and Anthony Carrigan (Gotham).

The storyline of this movie proves to be enjoyable and entertaining as it unfolds. The ghostly elements are well-executed, and the animation style maintains a nostalgic charm. While the inclusion of a Velma love story may not have been necessary, it doesn't significantly detract from the overall experience. The conclusion may be somewhat predictable, but it remains satisfying.

In summary, Trick-or-Treat Scooby-Doo may not be outstanding, but it's a fun addition to the Scooby-Doo universe. I would rate this a 6/10 and recommend seeing it once.

Questionable
danboiii23 October 2022
While the animation is pretty smooth... the painted backgrounds and drawn characters clash and are very off putting. Ik it's a cartoon about a talking dog but up until recently the stories and animation had atleast some type of realism. This was just too cartoonish for me and not what scooby doo had been for the last 20 years. Bring back the what's new scooby doo animation or even the mystery incorporated style. The new school style just doesn't fit scooby doo I love scooby doo to death and even I had to force myself to get through this ... stop messing with scooby doo some things do not need to be changed.

not that fond of Coco
SnoopyStyle30 April 2023
The gang solves the case of the Cat Man. They discover that many of their cases are related. The villains' costumes are all made by Coco Diablo. She tries to recruit someone to take out the gang, but they catch her in the act. Velma has a big crush on Coco. With Coco locked up, there just isn't any more big cases.

The big news in this one is Velma's sexual preferences. I'm racking my brain trying to remember any of her previous crushes in earlier iterations. It's not a big deal to me. Maybe it's a big deal for others. More than anything, I don't particularly like Coco. I would have liked a nicer partner for Velma whether male or female. I hope she's not a new constant contributor. This movie's comedy is broader than most Scooby adventures. It's definitely trying for something wackier and sillier. I do like it to some extent. I'm less fond of Coco and her sexual preference has nothing to do with it.

Worst Scooby Doo Movie
raphaelnorton16 October 2022
My kids and I watch Scooby Doo most weekends. Yesterday we rewatched the first Zombie Island which is my favorite! This week we also watched Happy Halloween Scooby Doo, the Sword and the Scoob to name a few.

This movie was just not entertaining. We had to force ourselves to keep watching. I don't normally have to do that for my 5 year old. The storyline reminds me of the Be Cool, Scooby Doo Tv show. They're using the old animation style and had a lot of call backs to old villains which may be its only positives. The movie was just trying to be too meta, made fun of it's own story model way farther than it needed to, and felt like it was just pushing an agenda that didn't feel natural. In fact, I felt like they betrayed Velma's character to not be okay with being herself.

Not sure who they were targeting with this one. Boring tale for kids and adults. I would love to see them go back to the writing from the early 2000s. Zombie Island and the Witch's Ghost were so good. But I also really enjoyed Happy Halloween from 2020 so it's not like good writing can't be found.

Really fun Halloween special!
deanschoolwork4 October 2022
If you are a fan of Scooby doo or Halloween you will adore trick or treat Scooby doo! Great animation and some "creepy" moments make it worth watching. Scooby doo and the gang are amazing as always. The monsters are designed really well and the mystery was pretty cute. If you or your kids want to watch something short but fun I'd 100% recommend this movie. P. S. If your interested in some more fun Halloween movies I'd recommend: -coralline -live action Scooby doo 1 & 2 -Casper -the many adventures of Ichabod crane and mr. Toad -Mad monster party -Happy Halloween Scooby doo!

-it's the great pumpkin Charlie Brown -Hocus Pocus -Halloween town.

Scooby-Doo never disappointed
hristokasabov9 February 2023
The plot was good. The voice actors was like a good old times. This movie is surprisingly funny and actually good. I'm classic Scooby fan and this is my type movie for my favourite character from old time when we watch it on cinema (Mystery Inc.). The story is kind-a predictable but the animatuon is wonderfully. It's perfect choice for everyone who love Scooby and enjoy cartoons. This is nostalgic for me. Awesome incorporation of representation on part of Velma's characterization. Shaggy was my favourite like Scooby. Daphne was just good nothing special but it's not bad. Just watch it is 1 hour and 10 minutes long.

Very poor writing horrible
snulight19 November 2022
This movie was slow mediocre and overall had poor writing throughout. It seems they had an idea but couldn't process it so they just forced it like peanutbutter & jelly and threw mayo on it.

Even the artwork which was a call back to nostalgia didn't seem to be done well. It was like watching ghost coast show on adult swim back in the day but no comedy. I'm not sure who green lit this story but they need to be fired immediately and find themselves working for a mc Donald's. I've literally watched every single episode and movie ever created of scooby doo and I do mean everything including that one where scooby and shaggy live in the rich mansion and this is worse. Next time hire someone who's actually a hard-core fan who knows what they're doing. This was straight up trash!

One of the best Classic animation SD's in a while!!
patrickpicouharrington18 October 2022
So good, the jokes and the throw backs were awesome! I haven't enjoyed a Scooby Doo like this in a long time. So many inside jokes and references to the classic Scooby, you can't go wrong. The animation in some of the scenes are hilarious! They really had a blast doing their research in bringing the past into this one. I loved it, the kids loved it, you'll love it! And the self awareness of this one, is so great. Not in mention the, dare I say it... inclusiveness! The cop and all the past villains make this one a blast from the past. I felt like it was a passion project, and it paid off. Do you self a favor....watch it!

WB, Please Stop Meddling With Scooby's Continuity
jeremycrimsonfox19 October 2022
Warner Bros. Has been getting a lot of hate lately after the Warner Discovery, and Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo is the lone DTV Scooby movie of the year (making it sad, especially since WB made the stupid move to cancel a holday special based on the Scoob movie that was almost completed and write it off as a tax cut, meaning money that could've been made moving that to DTV being thrown to the flaming dumpster on the studio lot). Anyway, after breaking their biggest case of all, the Mystery Inc gang have been reduced to doing odd jobs since they busted Coco Diablo, who has been providing costumes for the villains they have chased over the years. One year later, Fred decides to set up a booth at the Coolsville Halloween Festival in hopes of getting a real mystery, however, he soon gets his wish as the gang allow Coco Diablo to join them in their latest mystery, involving ghosts who look just like them.

Okay, Happy Halloween Scooby-Doo was a movie I liked as it basically redeemed the film series after the last two films were negatively received (mainly for the sin of changing continuity because Warner Bros. Wants to keep the films like the 1969 series that started it all). However, Trick or Treat manages to commit that sin with the Coco Diablo character, who in the film, was introduced as a criminal mastermind who not only made the Cat Man monster suit for the opening scene, but also the costumes of the Black Knight, Space, Kook, Ghost Clown, and six others from the original show. Once again, Warner Bros. Messes with Scooby-Doo's continuity all because they want to add another character in, and here, they claim the crooks of those nine episodes got their costumes from her (when the original series showed they made their own costumes for their notorious deeds (as Mr. Whitler wore the Black Knight armor and it was delivered to the museum, and Captain Cutler's diving suit had glowing seaweed to make him look like a ghost). I get adding a character making costumes from the various rogues, but it should not be done at the expense of changing what fans of the Great Dane already appreciate.

Another problem is the writing. Seriously, while it was good to see all the villains Scooby and the gang have busted, it is sadly bogged down by characters whose personalities are horrible (the Warden of the prison Coco is in is a fanboy who is okay with them), and the whole story feels like it has less effort put in the writing compared to past Scooby DTV mysteries. Also, at 67 minutes, this feels more like an hour-long TV special than an actual direct-to-video movie, and while it was good to see the gang dress up in the monster costumes near the end, sadly, it was for a weak reason I shall not spoil. Only gets three stars from me for the cameos and the animation being decent, but the writing and continuity changes really makes this more of a trick than a treat for Scooby fans.

I couldn't keep up with the story line
anitagcraig18 October 2022
I am always to see new Scooby Doo movies. Bit I couldn't follow the plot. However, it was your usually funny Scooby movie. My favorite movies of course are Zombie Island, Witches Ghost & the one with Kiss. I do wish they would update the look of the characters like they did on the Mystery Inc.

I am glad they keep reinventing the characters and they are grown as a Scooby doo fan I want new movies to keep coming and for the storylines to keep growing & more movies focused on the supernatural like zombie island & witches ghost. Keep these new movies coming and I will keep tuning in for these storylines.

It's 2022 but looks like 1970's
johnedwardsclan-3357124 October 2022
The animation is old school low quality with the skin colored eyes, but the overacting and over exaggerated reactions from characters come off as annoying and almost unwatchable! The personalities are like Ren and Stempy with the main characters acting like morons and not in a cute way but deeply insecure kind of way, and the other characters are given such loud personalities it overshadows the story.

My 10yo, & 6yo didn't enjoy it one bit and have watched all the other Scooby-Doo movies.

I was excited about a new scooby movie, but this movie fell quite short from the cheesy one liners and crazy vein bulging characters.

Nice Halloween Addition.
agolucasnyc5 October 2022
Not a groundbreaking movie, but it's a lighthearted fun movie to watch on Halloween. Nice throw back of famous and iconic monsters. It's just as great as the other Halloween movie with Elvira. I love how the characters' storylines are really a good and fun part of the movie. Nice to see Daphne questioning her place in the gang.

And it was really beautiful to see Velma being so relatable with having a crush on Coco and asking Daphne for advice. I love when the gang feel like real people and not 2 dimensional characters with no personality.

I'm giving a 10 stars because although it's not reinventing the wheel, it's definitely trying to do something different and fun while keeping very much a Scooby Doo story.

Never thought I would rate a SD movie so low
wayabovecomics6 November 2022
I love Scooby doo and especially the movies, which I have never missed. But what a bore this one was.

Firstly the artstyle was really bad and backwards from all the current movies. It is close to Guess who (I didn't like Scooby Doo and Guess Who as well.) The first 15 minutes are barely tolerable. Once the Halloween prep starts, things get a little better but couldn't keep up for long.

Story could've been better but the artstyle is so dull that I just couldn't gather any interest in it.

The designs of the monsters were also very generic. Since What's New and Mystery Inc, I expected better designs.

I would recommend skipping this unless you too have to watch all the SD movies.

Near Classic Halloween Fun
nadinestokes-2198816 October 2022
This special is surprisingly funny and a bit meta if that's your thing! It's my thing for sure and as a classic Scooby fan this movie was a super fun Halloween romp with a little something new. It's not absolutely groundbreaking and the story is somewhat predictable but the animation is wonderfully fluid and it's filled with so much classic Scooby references! I think this is a great movie to sit down with some slightly older kids, but they may find it boring as there's a lot of dialogue. Awesome incorporation of representation on part of Velma's characterization. It doesn't feel ham fisted and makes sense for the character. Some good laughs as well. Overall not a horrible Halloween watch for older kids or nostalgic adults!

It's a Scooby Doo movie!
dntmccormick21 October 2022
What do I want from a Scooby Doo movie? This! Scooby Doo trick or Treat is summed up perfectly by Fred in a very meta line in this movie. "It's not what I expected, but it's exactly what I expected." A franchise as old as time consistently breathes new life into itself and it's run of the mill plot and character archetype's by meddling with those kids and their dumb dog. This isn't your mom and dads Scooby Doo but it is still a pure and true Scooby Doo classic for the new age! Put away your fears of characters needing to stay the same and remember life goes on, things change and sometimes the biggest villains aren't the guys in a mask. It may just be the internet trolls leaving bad reviews cause made up characters get changed a little.

A Modern Classic Scooby-Doo
zdelaney-0058918 October 2022
Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo is completely enamoring, has genius levels of self-awareness, and perfectly embodies the quips and writing style, character tropes, and stories that have shaped Scooby-Doo for decades. It is a modern classic that reveres it's history, delivering an artistic combination of fan-service and originality that successfully breathes life into a franchise that has dozens of movies, shows/series, video games, and more. Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo certainly holds its own against some of the best mysteries that the Gang has been involved in. Running at just over an hour and fifteen minutes, it doesn't overstay it's welcome for a second, telling a fantastic, hilarious story with all of the kooky characters we'd expect to meet at this point. Truly a 10/10, A+.

One of the Best and Most Original SD Movies in Years
inyrui30 October 2022
I've been a Scooby fan since I was a kid, and I've seen about every Scooby movie (except the WWE wrestling ones) and I gotta say, this is the best Scooby DDV fiim in years. I'm gonna try to express my praise without spoiling any of the story so those who haven't seen it yet can watch it with fresh eyes.

The animation is very well done; it mimics the style from the original Where Are You series that the most recent series Guess Who has been using, and I think it looks great. The character animation is fluid and doesn't try to stay on model the entire time, which allows for some funny visual gags. The film also uses squash and stretch animation to its advantage, making the characters movements more dramatic and visually interesting. The color palette is really vibrant, and the background are great too. The backgrounds and characters do clash a tad bit, but hey, look at the original Where Are You series and tell me those didn't clash. Beyond that slight criticism, the animation looks great.

I thought the writing was very good for a modern Scooby film. The story itself does lean into the "meta" humor aspect, but I think it was well done. There were only two 4th wall breaking jokes near the end of the film that I thought were pretty funny, but overall it was very entertaining and didn't lean too much into the "wink wink nudge nudge" type of jokes that make some meta humor lazy and boring. That said, I do think the story might go over some kids heads. This movie seems more like it was made for long time fans of the series, especially with all the callbacks to Where Are You, and the plot can get a little confusing. I could follow the film pretty easily but I can see how it could lose the attention of kids who watch Scooby Doo. Otherwise, I think most kids who love Scooby will enjoy this movie as well. My only real criticisms are the pacing being a little off; with some jokes and scenes dragging on a little too long causing the flow of the film to slow down, and the fact that the antagonists don't get a lot of screen time. Other than that I have nothing but praise.

I thought the portrayal of the characters was spot on. Scooby and Shaggy are the easiest to get right; perpetually frightened and hungry, with their main goal in the film being getting the mystery over with so they can trick or treat and get some candy. Fred is forlorn over their lack of new mysteries and bad guys to unmask, and when they do finally come across this new mystery, his exuberance is very in character and he has some very funny moments. Daphne was a welcome surprise, with her own mini-arc in the movie being that she feels she doesn't get to contribute much to the gang, but by the end there's a great scene that resolves her frustrations and was nice to see as a long time fan. And of course, Velma, who, as most people know from the trailers of the movie, is smitten with the newly introduced character "Coco Diablo." Her bumbling attitude around Coco is pretty fun to watch and it's nice to see the series finally outright confirm what most of us fans have suspected for so long. And Coco herself was an interesting new character as well, although I won't say too much as not to spoil anything.

I think those who are angry about the "retcons" and "meta humor" in this film are being a little dramatic. Scooby Doo is over 50 years old, there have been countless retcons and reimaginings. The series has had more iterations than any other animated property I can think of, and personally I think the small amount of retcons in this film serve the story well and aren't really that big of a deal if you can suspend your disbelief for a while. And the meta humor is not as prevalent as some are saying. Yes, the film does play with the Scooby formula, especially near the beginning, but it's done tastefully and the film doesn't rely on it for the entire runtime. I thought the meta aspect was really well done and explored a novel concept thatvwe havent seen in any Scooby film so far. If you're a fan of Scooby Doo, I couldn't recommend this one enough. I personally think Trick or Treat SC is even better than Happy Halloween SC or any DDV SD movie in the past couple years.

Great New Scooby Doo Mystery
burnetteashby30 October 2022
I am a big Scooby Doo fan but I really enjoyed this movie in particular. It felt fresh and funny. When I first clicked on this movie I was expecting a Scooby Doo movie that was similar to all the ones I've seen before, but I found myself really invested in the storyline. While the plot was not completely unpredictable, up until the very end I was not completely sure who was behind it all. I have always liked the "Scooby Doo Mystery Incorporated" series and I feel like a lot of the same humor that I enjoyed from that series was in this movie as well. There was some self awareness of the movie, and Scooby Doo in general, which wasn't overly cliche but rather enjoyable. I have seen some people complain that this movie messed with the timeline of the Scooby Doo universe but I do not mind. I think it is a unique continuation of previous stories. I like the "new" animation style that showcases more of the original animation style. I will also say that I do not usually go out of my way to rate any movie, but this was the best movie I have watched recently.

First original feeling movie in a while
jakelaycock16 October 2022
This really has the plot and storyline of a Scooby-Doo movie verses just an extra long tv episode worthy mystery.

The Halloween tie in is really fun but isn't the heart of the movie, but more just the background amount the story the gang is involved in.

I feel like the comedy mixes classic cartoon jokes with some new animated comedy. A more cartoonish version of jokes we got in Scooby-Doo: Mystery Inc.

I think people need to realize that franchises aren't going to be the same thing over and over otherwise they get dull and boring, and the changes this film made are really fun!

And anyone who has issue with Velma in this, we had episodes/films where Shaggy, Velma, and Daphne do the same thing with a character they need in the episode/film. Doesn't distract from any of the movie, just adds to it.

The best of the two Halloween Scooby-Doo films
DeonhasMoved4 November 2022
While Happy Halloween, Scooby-Doo! Didn't do much for me, this movie was really fun. I love the retro-esque animation they went for, the story is unique as it involves the Mystery Inc. Getting help from the person who made the monster costumes, and it's overall one of the most enjoyable direct-to-video Scooby-Doo movies I've seen so far.

I have to fill this review out so uhhh...

As much as I hated Scoob! For butchering the source material in favour of cashing in on recent trends, I'm still against Warner Bros. Discovery for cancelling it's prequel Holiday Haunt even though it WAS FINISHED!!!

Loved it
Milk_Tray_Guy29 December 2022
Mystery Inc discover that the monster/ghost costumes used by the villains in their previous cases were all designed and made by the same person - one Coco Diablo. Coco runs a business making expensive Halloween costumes, but has a sideline supplying fake monster suits - including state-of-the-art gadgetry - to criminals. The Scooby gang construct an elaborate scheme to capture her - which actually works. But as a year passes, Fred, Daphne and Velma become depressed with no mysteries to solve, as Coco serves her time (Shaggy and Scooby on the other hand are quite happy!). Then, on Halloween, a ghost appears - and destroys the Mystery Machine. With no leads the gang visit Coco in Coolsville Penitentiary, and have her released into their custody to help with the case. But as they try to identify the culprit, they find that one ghost has become several - and Mystery Inc are the targets...

This has ties to some of Scooby's earliest cases (including the Black Knight, Captain Cutler, the 10,000 Volt Ghost, Charlie the Robot, the Spooky Space Kook, the Creeper), and an art/animation style that reflects that. The jokes are funny, the mystery is intriguing, and the characterisations are bang-on. Well... one characterisation has caused some controversy; Velma 'crushes hard' (as she puts it) over Coco. She becomes tongue-tied, she blushes, her glasses steam-up, and she tries really hard to impress. And that's it. There's no kissing, no declarations of undying love, and no rainbow flags. It's all very innocent (this is Scooby-Doo, for Chrissakes) and unlikely to 'infect or corrupt' anyone :cwink:. As usual, Frank Welker, Grey DeLisle, Matthew Lillard, and Kate Micucci nail the voice acting. A shout-out too for Myrna Velasco, who voices Coco Diablo.

A lot of fun. 8.5/10.

Fun, wholesome, and GORGEOUSLY ANIMATED
yqhgnqw2 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This movie was a super cute love letter to the original Scooby Doo cartoon. The animation was beautifully smooth and fun to look at, the plot was entertaining, and you can tell people had a lot of fun making this movie. Coco was a great addition to the group and easily had the best animation of all the characters, she was like an inverse Edna Mode. My favorite thing about this movie was the goofy facial expressions, the Mystery Inc group dynamic, and the incredible color theory used! The background art was breathtakingly stunning, and was a great for the eyes. Definitely would recommend watching this!
