This Murder Is on Debra
claudio_carvalho26 July 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Dexter is stressed with Debra's surveillance on him and he selects his next victim, the killer Ray Speltzer, to calm down his dark passenger. However he decides to get rid of Louis Greene first and he sends the hand of the Ice Truck Killer to Miami Metro and a DVD with Louis having sex to Jamie; consequently Louis is fired by Masuka and dumped by Jamie. Meanwhile Isaak continues to seek out Viktor and keep track of Kaja's bracelet and he finds Dexter's motor boat at the marina. Isaak and his men find Louis trying to sink the boat and they learn that the owner is Dexter before killing Louis. Dexter believes that Ray will kill again and tries to convince Debra to let him execute the killer to protect his next victim. However Debra decides to follow the book and to use the law to catch Ray. Who will be right in the end?

"Buck the System" shows the fight between Debra and her moral principles using the law against Harry's code followed by Dexter to satisfy his dark passenger. The revengeful Louis finds what he was looking for when he decided to mess with Dexter but without his participation. I look forward to see the fate of Isaak Sirko now that he will cross path with Dexter. My vote is seven.

STROBE LIGHT WARNING!
Amelia40514 August 2021
On the off chance someone checks viewer reviews before watching, I wanted to leave a warning that strobe lights are used late in the episode. You'll know it's coming when Deb approaches a house by herself at night. If you're sensitive to it, like I am, just be prepared to look & listen for a few minutes. Otherwise, just another great episode.

Are you ready to Buck the System?

Warning: Spoilers
Dexter Season 7 just happens to get better and better every episode. We opened with the heart wrenching premiere, "Are You...?, that simply kept me on the edge of my seat. Sunshine and Frosty Swirl followed up that episode beautifully as it was written perfectly and sent a message to Dexter in an amazing way. But Buck The System may just be even better.

Written By Jace Richdale and Directed Stefan Schwartz, the episode once again is amazingly written and directed. But one thing about this episode I loved was the cinematography; for instance when Dexter was talking about, "the walls closing in on his life", the camera angles symbolized Dexter in-between those two buildings. And again at the end of the episode, when he says, "I'm free", and looks over to the vast area with nothing around him. The cinematography this season is amazing.

In this episode we have a few major moments, such as the introduction of Hannah McKay. We see the downfall/death of Louis Greene and the great moment when Dexter meets Isaac for the first time. At the end of the episode when Ray Speltzer escapes, we see an amazing ending with Debra finally understanding why Dexter does what he does. And in someways she understands.

The only downfalls for the episode was the absence of his son Harrison and death of Louis, which for me felt weird seeing as they built him up over Season 6 and the start of Season 7 just to kill him fairly quickly.

Overall, I rate this Episode a 9/10. It is amazingly written and directed with amazing symbolism. So far this Season is shaping to be a season that undoubtedly will be much better the some others.

Just one question
fokuro5 January 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Oh, I really liked this episode. And Dexter is finally back on track with season 7, which makes me fell good, because my hopes were rewarded.

Once again, Dexter's main target in this episode was not related directly to the bigger plot of the season, but whereas in season 6 that kind of hunt felt empty, in this episode everything made sense. There was something behind the killing, that is, Dexter and Debra coming to a wicked sort of understanding. And the action was really good too, it made me feel thrilled like I hadn't felt in quite a while watching Dexter.

Quinn's story arc with the stripper is promising too - he will be messing with the wrong people, and the fact that he actually cares about her may bring interesting pieces to the puzzle. Speaking of which, the mobsters are getting a good lead on Dexter too. It is going to be a major hunt, but now Dexter is the one being hunted.

I just have one major concern: WHERE ARE ASTOR AND CODY? The actors didn't want to represent their roles again? What is going on? Harrison still shows up quite often, but Astor and Cody have just vanished without explanation. That is not right. It is a loose end that cannot go untied, and I hope (again) that they give it the proper treatment.

At 25:31 in this video you can see the big grave thing says "Yanny" on it. I think that's pretty cool!

1. Dexter tries to convince Deb 2. Russian mob is chasing Dexter 3. Deb understands Dexter

Pretty significant episode. It looks like Louis is finally gone!! But also Deb and Dexter settled their differences and deb is most likely going to turn a blind eye on Dexter's activities. What would the relationship look like moving forward? Would the feeling of love ever be resurfaced for Deb? Most likely not. But since Laguerta is chasing the blood slide, they will inevitably be at the crossroads.

The Russian mob is aware of Dexter's existence. It's always better when Dexter is being chased than him chasing someone because former is more unpredictable. One of the better villains that we've seen so.

Warning: Spoilers
Dexter feels trapped as he has Deb watching his every move that he cannot even kill someone. The second look at Dexter killing shows that when he gets the chance he might blow over the top to kill someone. Third time and this time it's real when he try's to hurt someone. Dexter tells Deb about how he feels uncomfortable not killing someone but she brings up Harrison which keeps him calm thinking about his future. Dexter goes searching through some old files to find a new victim that he stakes to a gym. Quinn is getting too close to the centre by maybe going out with one of the dancers from the club. When the Miami police get a package with a hand it in they see that it was taken by one of the employees online. Dexter searches through a bag but ends up finding a lot of stuff but not really anything that could help in finding a murderer. The video with the hooker is found and just another nail in the life of someone Dexter has ruined. When Dexter finds a target he tells Deb that he wants to kill him but she does not thinks he should even with his system. Dexter goes to a graveyard to do some investigating as he thinks there could be something suspicious. Dexter is brought along on a trip to the club and ends up running into the leader of the murdering this season and he doesn't really know it at first. Dexter Batista go to interview someone who says she does not know anything about Wayne, this women is Hannah McKay (Yvonne Straovski) who they get a blood sample from. When the club owners get to boat they find that guys life Dexter has ruined but then he tells them that it is Dexter's boat and now we shall see the villains going after Dexter. Quinn goes out with the club dancer and he seems to be weary but she is all for it even kissing him at the end. Deb then does her own following leading her to a house where a man and women are talking. Then the man starts to get to close.. Deb sees that something weird is happening in the house and goes to check it out at the same time Dexter hears the message he must run after her. Deb gets into the house to chase after this weird man because she heard some screams. Just when Deb seems to be gone Dexter comes to save her with a plank to knock the guy out. The guy ends up getting away but the girl seems to be save. Another great episode and because of the new brother/sister dynamic working so well I forget Yvonne was going to be on the show.

EPISODE GRADE: B+ (MVP: Michael C. Hall)

S7.E3 - Things will never be the same again [9/10]

Warning: Spoilers
(S7. E3) My Reaction / Review for Dexter Season 7 Episode 3 ''Buck the System'': Episode 2 was good and I gave it a rating of 9/10. Let's see if this one is better or worse. Dex already is searching for a new victim? What about Deb? He cant have it all, he needs to decide, serial killer life or Deb. Im so happy Louis' life is falling apart. Mike is dead, I guess the actor didn't wanna be in the show anymore for some reason. Louis is dead? Now that's some good news. It seems like Quinn has a new girlfriend, good for him. Damn Speltzer is a psycho. Overall this was a pretty good episode, my rating is 9/10.

Buck the System
tbmforclasstsar16 October 2012
Warning: Spoilers
I've got to say, last night's Dexter caught me a bit off guard. Not in a bad way, necessarily—I was just surprised. Then again, that's not a bad thing considering the show's standing before its so-far-even-more-surprising season seven.

Already, at only the third episode's finale, we're witness to Deb coming to terms with Dexter's "Dark Passenger." She doesn't agree to help him satisfy it, or agree that killing is Dexter's only option for release, or even agree to accept it (if anything she admits she may not have the stomach to provide the rehabilitation Dexter needs—his beast may just be too much for her to handle); but she does admit that she, at the very least, understands it—so much so that she lets him off the hook, telling him to move out and resigning her duties as, well, keeper.

And that understanding only comes after her own inability to stop a murderer. Feeling the pressure of Deb's constant, stifling presence, Dexter finds himself feeling restless and caged, gaining little relief from bloody mental scenarios (fantasies that make his real attack on a man in custody darkly humorous). So, as a result of that restlessness, he decides, after warning Deb to back off a bit, to get back into his favorite game. Selecting a cemetery groundskeeper by the name of Ray Speltzer, a killer who invites women on dates before murdering them and stealing one of their earrings as a trophy, as his newest target, Dexter slowly but surely lets Deb in on his process, trying to convince her that killing Speltzer, or any other killer, really, is a means of sparing innocent lives.

Not convinced Harry's code, or his lack of faith in the judicial system for that matter, provide excuse enough for Dexter to satisfy his dark urges, Deb initially shrugs off the evidence Dexter's stalking reveals that points to Speltzer's guilt, but after a while, becomes paranoid, deciding to give in and trust her brother's "lizard brain" as he describes (after all, as Dexter points out, going along with his hunches is something she's been doing the entire time she's been a detective, even if she's never really known where those hunches actually stemmed from). Following her brother's instincts, Deb checks up on Speltzer at his home, only to find him mid-torture/murder, and she would've become a Speltzer victim herself had Dexter not come round to (almost) save the day. Unfortunately, Speltzer escapes before Deb can arrest him, something that ultimately leads to her mixed feelings of guilt. Suddenly, this newest victim has indirectly become, in a small way, her fault, and after what's more than likely much debate, Deb comes to terms with the fact that Dexter was right—had he killed Speltzer like he wanted to, no one else would've died by his hand—thus, her choice to understand and "set him free," for the time being anyway.

I suppose the speed of Deb's understanding is what surprised me most. What she assumes was her responsibility for the victim isn't something that's completely out of character for her, but I would've expected—or maybe I just hoped—that the serial killer rehab she had going would've extended its stay a bit longer; as I mentioned last week, the setup certainly held the promise of a fresh dynamic for this show and would've planted the perfect seeds for an intriguing, albeit rather disturbing, Deb's-feelings-crisis. Hall and Carpenter, in my opinion, have really stepped it up this season and I was really interested in their new on screen relationship. I hope this quick understanding and separation doesn't snag the season's impressive progress.

Good Episode, Some Lazy Directing
ianwagnerwatches5 January 2022
Some of the performances in this episode were unusually lacking, though only slightly. Some shot choices were lacking--the scene of Hannah McKay's cheek swab comes to mind, the distant and minimal coverage of the swab and fumble especially. Overall, great episode, with some--SOME--lazy directing.
