Welcome back to Origins, our recurring series that gives artists a space to break down everything that went into their latest release. Today, Ice-t digs into the twisted inspirations behind the latest Body Count release, “Psychopath.”
Body Count have returned with their new single, “Psychopath,” offering Ice-t the opportunity to step back into a different side of himself kept hidden while playing Sergeant Fin Tutuola on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.
As Ice-t tells Consequence over Zoom, he relishes in extremes when making music — particularly when it comes to the macabre. “I think humans have a blood lust,” he explains. “We’re fascinated by it… we run to the car crash.”
For the multi-hyphenate, working with his hardcore/metal project, Body Count, offers a different kind of catharsis and escapism than playing a character on TV, or playing a character in his solo music. Their new release, “Psychopath...

Given the massive amount of resources that Netflix committed to "3 Body Problem" (not to mention the lengthy stay at the top of Netflix's Top 10 lists since its debut), it was likely only a matter of time before the streaming giant made the obvious official. That's finally happened, and now fans of one of the nerdiest, densest, and most existential sci-fi book series ever written can look forward to showrunners and co-creators David Benioff, D.B. Weiss, and Alexander Woo's take on what's widely considered to be the best book of the alien-invasion trilogy.
Season 2 of "3 Body Problem" is now confirmed to be in the works, as Netflix announced in a social media post on Twitter (only literal extraterrestrials would ever call it "X") earlier this afternoon. For those who haven't yet caught up on the first season, which I reviewed for /Film here, consider this your cue to...

Last year's WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes came as a surprise and stalled the release of most movies and TV shows that were at least co-produced in the US. Now that the strikes have ended and the studios have been given the green light to resume production, 2024 seems pretty overwhelming with the sheer number of shows that have joined the streaming services' libraries.

From the tiniest micro-organism to the far reaches of the universe, sci-fi adaptations have made a triumphant splash across multiple streaming platforms. For decades, the collective groans that routinely followed book-to-tv adaptation announcements were a given.
At the same time, many science fiction books are so steeped in lore, character motivations, politics, and scientific complexities that converting prose to a "show but don't tell" format is a tall task.
Star Trek, for instance, has historically been pretty cut and dry with its science. A phaser will vaporize you, and a transporter will, well, transport you.
Now, imagine explaining the three-body problem from a show but don't tell approach.
Thankfully, the rash of exciting new sci-fi adventures solves these riddles with filmmakers and writers who are passionate about the material.

“The Judgment Day sequence in the book was one of those ones that we talked about before where you just think, ‘Oh man, I really want to see that on-screen [and] see it done right,’ ” says Benioff. It took director Minkie Spiro a minute to grasp the epic nature of the scene. “I’ve read the [script] countless times trying to fathom, ‘How am I going to visually pull this off?’ ” she says.

Before the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures opened its doors in 2021, even senior staffers were surprised by the depth of Black film history that dwelt in its archives. Looking through the film posters and memorabilia from race movies of the early 20th century, co-curator Doris Berger found herself amazed and chagrined. She had stumbled on a treasure trove and heritage she knew little about.
Berger is not alone and her experience isn’t surprising. The foundational titles most of us know and gravitate to first when we think of Black film tend to be the earnest classics of the 1960s, the blaxploitation movies of the 1970s, and the indie Black cinema of the 1980s and 1990s.
In those archives, Dr. Berger recognized a rich history screaming out for greater attention. The result was an exhibition, conceived and produced in partnership with National Museum of African American History and Culture film and photography curator Dr.

Now Netflix has a two Body problem.
An adaptation of Liu Cixin’s epic sci-fi novel The Three-Body Problem is going to land on a major U.S. streaming service just weeks ahead of Netflix launching its own version.
Peacock announced Friday it has acquired Tencent’s Three-Body, the Chinese adaptation that was released internationally last year. The streamer will launch all 30 episodes Feb. 10.
While Tencent pegged the release date choice to the Lunar New Year, the launch is also clearly timed to get ahead of Netflix’s big-budget version, titled 3 Body Problem, coming March 21.
As the NBCUniversal press release rather archly notes, “With all the buzz surrounding Netflix’s English adaptation, we’re excited about the opportunity for sci-fi and Chinese drama fans to watch the Chinese-language original (with English subtitles) ahead of the Hollywood adaptation.”
The positioning allows Peacock to take advantage of the publicity generated by the Netflix version,...

Another low-wattage weekend is hot on the heels of last weekend’s disappointing opening for Matthew Vaughn’s would-be franchise starter, Argylle. Typically, studios are wary of putting out any major movies on Super Bowl weekend, as virtually no one goes to movies on game day. That said, there have been exceptions to the rule, with Taken and Chronicle both being big openers way back in the day. In recent years, though, the numbers have been more modest, with Death on the Nile taking in $12.8 million in 2022 and Magic Mike’s Last Dance cratering with a measly $8.3 million opening last year.
This weekend’s sole wide new release, Lisa Frankenstein, isn’t likely to do much better. Initially, Box Office Pro had it opening anywhere from $7-12 million, but the early reviews have been abysmal, and now the opening is pegged from anywhere between $5-9 million. While the horror film Jennifer’s Body was met by a lukewarm reception when it was first released in 2009, it has undergone a renaissance of sorts in recent years. People have realized that behind the inaccurate marketing of the movie lies a campy, yet powerful, story about two teenage girls whose relationship is forever changed by a group of young men seeking power. There are a few things, like certain lines of dialogue, that haven’t necessarily aged well in the 15 years since the film’s release, but overall the movie has been reclaimed as a queer horror classic.
Alongside people giving Jennifer’s Body another chance are those also seeking to give one of the film’s stars, Megan Fox, her long overdue flowers. Not just for her performance in this movie, but also to try and make up for all of the unjust hate and sexism hurled her way around the time the film premiered.

Directed by Zelda Williams and written by Diablo Jody, Lisa Frankenstein will dig up someone special in movie theaters nationwide on February 9.
To whet your appetite, Diablo Cody has presented us with a hugely interesting revelation this week: Lisa Frankenstein takes place in the same world as Jennifer’s Body?!
“I am just declaring that this movie takes place in the same universe,” Cody tells Deadline. “I have decided that. I will not say that you’d see any overt references to that but I’m saying it.”
On a related note, Cody recently told Bloody Disgusting that she’s “not done” with the world of Jennifer’s Body. And if she has her way, she’ll be writing a sequel at some point soon.

Anthony Anderson paid tribute to classic TV shows Good Times, Facts of Life, Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood and Miami Vice in the opening musical number on tonight’s Emmys, with the Black-ish star belting out some earworm theme songs from behind his piano.

The ‘Body’ singer pranked the late night host by waking him up to declare that “it’s time” for the holiday season to get underway, while he was dead asleep according to The Hollywood Reporter.
To make things merrier for the festive mood amid falling snow and blazing cold temperatures, a Santa Claus also came in accompanied by a gingerbread man and festive lights.
All of them came for a dance party in Kimmel’s bedroom as Carey’s popular song ‘All I Want For Christmas is You’ played over a loudspeaker. A look of confusion swept across the talk show host’s face as the singer tossed fake snow on the bed and around his room.

As Halloween arrives, it’s officially the final day of spooky season — but as Sabrina Carpenter captures in the music video for her latest single, “Feather,” men tend to be scary all year long. The Mia Barnes-directed video finds the singer pulling up in a bubblegum pink hearse to a funeral for a few catcalling, mansplaining, and consent-ignoring dudes who made the mistake of crossing her.
Carpenter finds a middle ground between Jennifer’s Body and Final Destination, with a pop girl twist, as she lets the universe take...

For years lesbian feminist film scholarship entailed archeological detective work, most notably excavating the subtexts of Rebecca (Alfred Hitchcock 1940) and The Haunting (Robert Wise 1963). In a peculiar reversal, I am going to try a similar dive into a film to salvage its male homosexuality. While Rebecca and The Haunting may have repressed latent desires under a gothic mood piece, Marry My Dead Body ( harbors a sexual ambivalence within a blatant coming out wake. In doing this, I am actually not faulting the film but rather the limitations on sexual legibility under even the most seemingly benign, apparently inclusive heteronormative social order. Moreover, while exposing what the film cannot do, I want to underscore what it does beautifully: it dramatizes as a default aspect of contemporary life, a kind of habituated melancholia interrupted by an intimacy that at first seems like an assault.

Exclusive: In what becomes the first go picture for the FilmNation Entertainment production startup Infrared, The Boys star Jack Quaid will star in Novocaine, a Lars Jacobson-scripted action thriller that will be directed by Dan Berk & Robert Olsen (Villains). The project will be introduced at the upcoming American Film Market, with FilmNation Entertainment handling global sales and co-repping U.S. rights with CAA Media Finance and UTA Independent Film Group. Pic is financed by Infrared and the plan is to begin production first quarter next year, with a SAG-AFTRA interim agreement in place.
Quaid is coming off Scream and Oppenheimer. In Novocaine he plays Nathan Caine. He was born with the rare disorder Cipa (Congenital Insensitivity to Pain), which means he does not feel physical pain. He grew up a sheltered child, learning to blend his food so he would not unwittingly chew off his own tongue,...

In the glitzy world of film, where box office revenue is the equivalent of high school popularity, some masterpieces are the proverbial “late bloomers.” They’re the ones who get their braces off after graduation and become prom kings and queens ….at the reunion, twenty years later. These horror gems, initially overshadowed by the cruel jests of critics or the cold shoulder from box office numbers, have risen like zombies from their graves to claim their rightful place in the pantheon of cult classics.
Let’s uncover these once-buried treasures of horror cinema!
Universal 7. The Thing (1982)
John Carpenter’s frosty extraterrestrial nightmare, The Thing, got the cold shoulder at the box office, scraping up just $19.6 million against its $15 million budget [source]. Critics weren’t kind either; the New York Times called it “instant junk”. Yet, this tale of Antarctic researchers battling shapeshifting aliens has since melted the hearts of horror buffs,...

Physical ended right where it began.
In the opening moments of Wednesday’s series finale, the action jumped from 1983 to 1986, mirroring the fleeting flash-forward that kicked off the dark comedy’s pilot. In the intervening three years, Sheila (Rose Byrne) and Greta (Dierdre Friel) have fulfilled their ambitious vision of turning Body By Sheila into the female-driven multi-million dollar, 50-state franchise that is Strength By Numbers. But professional success has come at a price for Sheila: She’s lonely. What’s more, her mental issues remain ever-present. But the return of her fitness foil Bunny (Della Saba) allows her to repent for her original sin,...

Warning: Major spoilers for the following films abound.
When asked about the most horrific time in their lives, many will shudder then say the years they spent in high school. From unpredictable acne and savage bullies to the particularly brutal pain of childhood friends growing apart, the high school halls can sometimes feel more like a minefield. Horror creators have explored this familiar subgenre for decades, from early classics like I Was a Teenage Werewolf to the slick and witty slasher boom of the 90s.
Bishal Dutta’s terrifying It Lives Inside continues this tradition by blending high school horror with demonic possession to explore the terrors of finding your place in an unforgiving world. The film follows Tamira (Mohana Krishnan), a tortured student carrying something much darker than a challenging schedule. Her best friend is drifting away, she hasn’t slept in weeks, and she’s constantly toting a...

As Physical winds down, it looks like Sheila (Rose Byrne) and Danny's (Rory Scovel) relationship will come back into focus, whether they like it or not.
TV Fanatic scored an exclusive first look at the penultimate episode of the Apple TV+ comedy, and you can cut the tension with a knife.
The video starts promising enough with the pair talking about their happier times until Danny has the gall to tell Sheila how she felt back then.
Sheila rightfully points out that she's been bottling up her feelings her whole life and isn't ready to go back to that.
With a matter of words, it seems Danny's hopes for a reunion are dashed, and that's reiterated when Sheila walks off, telling him that they're, indeed, done.
It's an emotional clip that shows the distance between the pair because their relationship was never on that strong of a footing throughout the series.

French-based sales agency Lightdox has acquired the international rights to feature documentary “Body” by Slovenian director and screenwriter Petra Seliškar ahead of its world premiere at the 29th edition of Sarajevo Film Festival. The trailer for the film has just been released (below).
The film screens on Aug. 14 as part of the Heart of Sarajevo competition for best documentary, which is for films from Southeast Europe and Southern Caucasus.
“Body” spans two decades of Seliškar’s close friend Urška Ristić’s life, when she was battling rare auto-immune diseases. The film blends intimate conversations, personal archives and creative visuals to explore the mysteries of the human body and the power of art and friendship to understand its essence. It is a tumultuous journey toward healing and self-acceptance.
Bojana Maric, head of sales and acquisitions at Lightdox, praised the director for being “patient and sensitive” on a film that took two...

Our Body.Few filmmakers capture the world with as passionate a sense of exploration and generosity as the French director Claire Simon. I first encountered Simon’s work at the True/False Film Festival, in 2015, where she was given a retrospective. In her documentary feature Mimi (2002), a middle-aged Franco-Jewish woman, Simon’s friend, tells the story of her parents and her own life, including crucial tales of amorous infatuation and enduring love. Love marked by the cruelties and devastation of war, such as the capturing of Mimi’s father by the Gestapo, because he was so hungry during the war that he slayed a donkey to eat its flesh; or another story, the most tragic one, of how a tiny piece of white bread—a luxury in wartime—for which Mimi’s father begged so ardently, led to his demise. Through her bodily gestures, her delicate features ignited with the bright flame of passionate recollection,...

Last week, a bunch of high-ranking military officials went before the US Congress and admitted that the government has been aware of the existence of aliens and that remains of extraterrestrials had been recovered from UFO crash sites. But the public at large was relatively unphased by this news because we're already so wrapped up in our own problems. How much more shocking can an alien invasion be to say, a global pandemic or a climate crisis?
Seeing The Becomers at the Fantasia Film Festival reflected this mood. The sci-fi rom-com indie satire drops a pair of aliens into a distracted and troubled world much like our own. It was written and directed by Zach Clark (Little Sister) in the early days of Covid-19, joining the leagues of post-pandemic flicks like Sick and Corona Zombies.

Review: Writer/director Laurence Vannicelli’s film Mother, May I? (watch it Here) has been described as a psychological thriller, but any genre fans who turn to this one hoping for heart-pumping scenes of thrills and scares won’t get what they’re looking for. This isn’t really the sort of movie that will keep you on the edge of your seat. While there are certainly moments where characters display strange behavior that might creep you out, for the most part Mother, May I? might be better described as a “psycho-drama”… and playing out all this drama allows lead actors Holland Roden and Kyle Gallner to turn the film into a great showcase of their skills.

Who didn’t Tony Bennett duet with?
The legendary singer was famously known for his Grammy-winning, platinum-selling Duet albums that featured everyone from Lady Gaga and Amy Winehouse to Aretha Franklin and Barbra Streisand.
Here, we celebrate the collaborative efforts of Bennett, who died Friday at age 96.
Lady Gaga
Lady Gaga ditched the upbeat, electronic dance sound that made her popular to work with Bennett on jazz music, a genre she had been singing since she was a teenager. The New Yorkers first collaborated on “The Lady Is a Tramp” from Bennett’s 2011 release Duets II. The pairing was so perfect they went on to record 2014’s Cheek to Cheek, with Bennett and Gaga hoping to turn more kids to jazz music. “[Gaga] has a vast group of young people who love her, and they’ve never heard popular jazz music, classical American music … and my ambition was to do this...

Apple TV+ has revealed the trailer for the third and final season of dark comedy series ‘Physical,’ starring and executive produced by Rose Byrne and created by Annie Weisman.
Set in the idyllic but fragile beach paradise of 1980s San Diego, the series follows Sheila Rubin (Byrne) as she transforms from a quietly tortured housewife to a dominant fitness entrepreneur.
In her journey, Sheila battled her way out of an unsatisfying marriage to Danny (Scovel), fostered a dangerous relationship with real-estate mogul John Breem (Sparks), and confronted the dark voices within her own mind that have shamed and suppressed her for so long. With the help of her loyal friend — and now business partner — Greta (Friel), Sheila has found confidence and inner strength through her work as a teacher and entrepreneur with Body by Sheila. The end of Physical will be here before we know it.
Apple TV+ went public with the key art and trailer for Physical Season 3 on Wednesday, and we have plenty of questions.
The trailer welcomes Zooey Deschanel to the cast as Kelly Kilmartin, and it's clear from the get-go that Rose Byrne's Sheila is not destined to be BFFs with her -- far from it, actually.
"Set in the idyllic but fragile beach paradise of 1980s San Diego, Physical follows Sheila Rubin (Byrne) as she transforms from quietly tortured housewife to dominant fitness entrepreneur," the logline for the final season teases.

In the pantheon of Erotic Thrillers, Body of Evidence is an odd one. It falls into the even more niche sub-category of courtroom thrillers, which spend as much time on the naughty bits as they do with witnesses on the stand or in depositions (see also: Disclosure).
Enter Body of Evidence. In the film, femme fatale Rebecca Carlson (Madonna) is arrested and charged with murder when her older, wealthy boyfriend John Marsh (Michael Forest) is found dead. Turns out the pair had quite the risqué sex life (or at least as risqué as mainstream Hollywood fare was willing to address in 1993): they were having non-missionary sex that involved some light bondage (ie: restraints such as belts and handcuffs).
District Attorney Robert Garrett (Joe Mantegna) makes it clear to the jury in his opening remarks that Rebecca’s body is the murder weapon. She induced Marsh’s fatal heart attack...

Rachel Goldberg, known for her TV work such as Resident Evil and American Gods, is making her feature directorial debut with The Bm, an action comedy from MarVista Entertainment, a division of Fox Entertainment.
Written by Family Guy stalwarts Shawn Ries and Artie Johann, the story centers on a young woman’s desperate search for a bathroom that gets her inadvertently caught up in a bizarre heist in Los Angeles with her best friend.
The action comedy is described as being in the vein of Booksmart and Pineapple Express, taking a look at what is takes to be a true friend amid criminal hijinks, all told over the course of 24 hours in the City of Angels.
Shooting is slated to start in September in LA with casting for up-and-coming comediennes about to get underway.
Josh Turner McGuire and Trevor Engelson (TV’s Heathers, FX’s Snowfall) will produce through their Underground banner.

Josh Turner McGuire and Trevor Engelson (TV’s Heathers, FX’s Snowfall) will produce through their Underground banner.

Television archaeologists take note: you don’t need to dig deep into the medium’s origins to uncover a diamond in the rough. Treasures can be found in the recent past. And one of those treasures involves the greatest fictional archaeologist of them all, Indiana Jones.
On March 4, 1992, ABC premiered the two-hour movie pilot of “The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles” in its 8 p.m. slot to much fanfare. The show’s titular hero was a younger (and older) version of Harrison Ford’s blockbuster icon, who at 10, 17, and yes, 93, had his own set of primetime adventures. Since the series was the brainchild of filmmaker and franchise-builder George Lucas, outlets like USA Today, The Washington Post and The New York Times covered it extensively. Lucas wanted his “Chronicles” to do what movies couldn’t: tell one big story over 20 to 40 hours of programming. In today’s streaming landscape, that sounds perfectly conventional,...

Jimmy Page and Keith Richards didn’t cross paths much in the 1970s. After all, the guitarists stayed busy with their bands, Led Zeppelin and The Rolling Stones. Maybe you’ve heard of them (sarcasm font). Richards didn’t like Zep, but he respected Page and tried to get him drunk when he played on a Stones song in the 1980s.

Page cut his teeth as a session musician before joining the Yardbirds and later forming Led Zeppelin. He knew a thing or two about staying busy. Zeppelin’s relentless touring and recording schedule left him little time for working with other bands in the 1970s.
That changed in the 1980s.

This article contains spoilers for "Yellowjackets" season 2 episode 9.
After a complex, fascinating, brutal two months, the "Yellowjackets" season finale is here. "Storytelling" is directed by the brilliant Karyn Kusama, so we should already be prepared for some horror and a whole lot of heartbreak. The episode opens with an always killer needle-drop, "Zombie" by The Cranberries. It underscores a nearly comatose teenage Nat walking through the wilderness and heading back to the cabin knowing she must tell Travis that Javi has drowned.
Travis is relieved to see her alive but immediately mortified when the rest of the girls come back with a half-frozen Javi hanging from a wooden bar. "The wilderness chose," she tells him, but Travis' grief is insurmountable. His little brother who finally returned after months of being missing in the woods is gone. Really, really gone.
In the present timeline, adult Shauna agrees with Lottie's plan...

The screenplay, penned by Holland, Gabriela Łazarkiewicz-Sieczko and Maciej Pisuk, is inspired by real events. Research for the film included hundreds of hours of document analysis, interviews with refugees, border guards, borderland residents, activists and experts.
