Merch girl is no Staple head, but it's real
siamese9205 February 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I really enjoyed this episode. Chloe Sevigny does a great job of playing a hardened, washed up rocker who's never written a hit in her life. She can recognize them, she can belt them out, but she can't produce them. What a signature scream, right?! Before Gavin, they had another talented drummer who wrote Staple Head. What a great name for a heavy metal song! Maybe a lot of them have crazy names like that? I've never been into metal. I saw Ruby as kind of a poor man's Joan Jett. Even the alliteration caught my attention- Ruby Ruin. Great name! Clearly, Ruby is world-weary, battle-hardened, and hungry for a return to fame. The bars they play in are so pathetic. I really hope it's not like that for old rockers. That seemed humiliating. How far would you go to reclaim that high of being worshipped? All the way to murder. Poor Gavin! He was very annoying, not as talented as we initially thought, right? Stealing the theme song to Benson? Hilarious!! Thoroughly enjoying this series!

Rest in Metal
bobcobb3015 February 2023
Warning: Spoilers
We knew that we would get some sort of Chloe Sevigny appearance on this show given the role she played on the last Natasha Lyonne show Russian Doll, but this was the right fit for her. A character that had some positive traits and a lot of negative ones, and an episode that gave us a glimpse about how ugly the world of music can truly be.

It is going to be a little ridiculous how our lead character keeps getting involved in these murders and figuring out who the bad guy is, but you just have to ignore stuff like that to enjoy TV and so far this ia an enjoyable show for Peacock, something the service desperately needed.

"Are you ready for a banger?"
classicsoncall9 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Aging former rock stars seek a return to glory with a new hit song in this episode, but they're put on their back heel by an upstart young musician who responds to the beat of a different drummer in more ways than one. Nicholas Cirillo portrayed his character Gavin in such an over-the-top manner that it was hysterical every time he was on screen. As for the band Doxxxology, led by Ruby Ruin (Chloë Sevigny), they sounded terrible with every song they played, including their one hit wonder 'Staplehead'. 'Merch Girl' was stunningly bad as well, no wonder they couldn't forge a comeback. Series hero Charlie Cale (Natasha Lyonne) arrives on the scene as the band's new 'merch girl' herself, right before Ruby concocts a scheme to murder Gavin for a song he strung together from the tag lines of snack litter Charlie pieced together after he was electrocuted.

Say, did you catch the super glue from the second episode that Charlie used to patch up the cut on Gavin's forehead? I liked that bit of continuity from a prior story along with Cliff Legrand (Benjamin Bratt) arriving to demonstrate that the chase was still on for the death of Sterling Frost, Jr. In 'Dead Man's Hand'. I'm curious to see what happens when Frost Sr. Finally shows up. In typical fashion, Charlie doesn't hang around to enjoy the result of her successful murder investigation, delighting in the fact that 'Murder Girl' Elsie was covering it in her unique podcast, headlined by 'Would you kill for a second shot at fame'?

Magpie

Warning: Spoilers
I recognized Chloë Sevigny immediately. She's always had a sleazy, grungy kind of look to her, and it fit in perfectly in this episode. She was great as the washed up singer looking for the past. Nicholas Cirillo added the energy that the rest of the cast lacked, and made this episode. Natasha Lyonne only made a brief appearance, but a little of her goes a long way. She's made her bones with "Orange is the new black", and "Russian Dolls." This current vehicle is letting her stretch her mental legs. She sees things and thinks a little differently than most of us. She NOTICES things that most miss, and has turned it into a formula for our amusement. Congratulations, and carry on, Ms. Lyonne. I am enjoying it immensely!

It's Columbo meets Spinal Tap!
somervillechangeling9 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Charlie's channeling Columbo is always fun to watch. And the episode made me go to Songfacts to see if there was band discord on many of my favorite 60's and 70's songs.

I decided to check out the Band first because I knew Robbie Robertson wrote two of my favorite songs, The Weight and Cripple Creek. Yes, band members said they contributed to the music but never got credited, and never got song royalties.

So it's a music industry thing.

If I wrote for a successful band, I'd give everyone input and credit. Don't walk away from people you started with. No one makes it alone in this world.

The weird symmetry of the so bad they're bad Doxxology is that their one hit was written by their drummer who moved on to suburbia and shop ownership. They'd kill for another hit and when a new hit arrives via their new drummer, they do just that.

The Spinal Tap worthy bit is the "how is he Julliard?" drummer took the Benson theme and lyrics litetally from whatever was lying around. Gavin didn't deserve to die. He deserved to front a parody Metal band.

So far it's my favorite episode.

Rest in Metal
Prismark1030 June 2023
Charlie Cale finds herself on the road, part of an entourage selling merchandise for past their prime metal group Doxxxology.

They had one hit called Staplehead back in the 1990s and all the royalties were taken by their drummer who wrote the song. Now the band plays crummy joints to ever dwindling crowds.

Just hoping they can magically write another hit. Serendipity hits them and his name is Gavin, the new drummer they found from Craigslist. He may be annoying, not very hygienic who likes to go around in bare feet. Gavin has just written a song and it has hit written all over it.

Enough for the group's fiery lead singer Ruby Ruin (Chloë Sevigny) to propose murder with the other band members and steal Gavin's new song.

Only Charlie who spent some time with Gavin and called him a magpie is not too convinced that the drummer's death was accidental. She also figured out that Ruby and other members of the band did not write their new hit song Sucker Punch.

By now it is clear who the victim was going to be. Making the death look accidental was neat touch, Gavin electrocutes himself while drumming on stage.

It was a neat touch that the song was indeed called Sucker Punch. As Gavin the magpie had stole the riff from the 1980s sitcom Benson.

Be famous again
AvionPrince1616 February 2023
Warning: Spoilers
So before talking about the episode i need to say that it was a real pleasure to see Chloe Sevigny in the episode. So the episode is a little bit like the other but this time we have only the perspective of the group band who killed that young talented man and later they will add the perspective of Charlie and find it pretty good but i still dont really like how she founds the elements to incriminate the group: so random proofs, weird elements (selling the evidence to Ebay? Come on!) And of course the lie detector system who is completely illogical and just here to make the story go forward. What it was also interesting was that part where the man who worked at the casino find Charlie again; the tension come and more present in this episode. Maybe things will get more interesting. Maybe yes or maybe no.

I actually like this show but...
zmoliver6 April 2024
This is one of the cringiest episodes of TV ever made. As a fan of metal, it's apparent that whoever wrote this episode has never listened to metal in their life and thereby did it completely dirty.

I'm even questioning the actors' integrity for agreeing to play these parts!

What metal band is interested in writing hits? It's absurd.

And the music the "band" played... I don't even think I'd call it, pop-rock. More like; bubble-gum.

Horrible all the way around. I hope other people feel this way and speak up so the writers never think they can pass this type of garbage off ever again. Not to mention the producers. Do better, guys. Please.

Stunningly Unlikable Characters
Peaceful21122 July 2023
I loved the first three episodes of this show. Like, telling-absolutely-everyone-how-fantastic-it-is-you-HAVE- to -watch-it, and I never do that. I love that Natasha Lyonne has been reborn-- she's fabulously talented. All three of the first victims were fantastic, interesting characters. I wanted to see their killers brought to justice. Incredibly casts! Heck, I wanted those characters to be ones who stayed alive, especially two and three. This episode's attempts a humor fall flat. The members of the band are pathetic-- and not in an interesting, remotely believable, or wanna keep watching 'til the end way. Disappointing. It's not the actors. It's the writing. Is it the same writers throughout? Don't know. Didn't look. I hope this improves again and that there are more seasons once the strike is over.

Time to Fold - I'm out
gnarira13 February 2023
First two episodes were like getting dealt bullets. But as things go when you see the flop (Stall and Rest in Metal) Time to fold and cash out your chips. Terrible writing and a very thin gimmicky story.

Absurd, poor acting and should be cancelled like a bad hand soon.

Natasha Lyonne is a likeable actress but a show can't ride on the charm of one character and a Littlest Hobo/Columbo style premise.

If you're into brainless, telegraphed and processed binge watching. Heck, why not.

Sorry, I fold - quit while you're ahead people.

I think I'll rewatch Benson instead.

Kenny Rogers is calling!
