Purely made for Ajith fans
hrfireball13 July 2012
Among huge expectations pouring from every corners, Billa 2 finally made its appearance in the screens today. Chakri Toleti, 'Unnai Pol oruvan' fame, has boldly attempted in making a movie with Thala. The movie revolves around David Billa, a refugee from Sri Lanka, transforming into a gangster. Parvathy and Bruna, share the lead heroine role but fails to accomplish their part. But,Vidyuth does his part well, being stylish and a perfect villain across the seas.

Ajith literally steals the show. He appears to be a stylish Don. The dialogues by Era Murugan and Mohamed Zafar seems to be punchy and meaningful. Editing by Suresh could've been better. Music by Yuvan is pretty ordinary but keeps us engaged with the movie. Excellent Cinematography by Rajasekhar, he has made the film look stylish with his technical equipments. Slow Screenplay as resulted in many flaws in the movie.

Its Susprising that a gangster donating one crore to CM, with media covering the whole scene. Loopholes like these could have been avoided. Its so disappointing with the gangster song being placed with end credits. Belly dance sequence is unnecessary and lags the movie.

Stunt shows were promising and the helicopter sequence, even though pretty old, yet it is a big treat for ajith fans !! Overall, Chakri Toleti failed to fulfill the humongous expectations. But, thala fans would enjoy this adult rated movie.

Billa 2 Review - Perspective of Ajith Fans & Common Man

Billa 2 Review - Perspective of Ajith Fans & Common Man

Billa 2 had a huge expectation, was talk of TAMIL NADU, Released in Record Number of Theaters - To sum it up, 15000 online tickets were sold out in Mayajaal within half a day of the start of the booking, (82 shows)..

Did the Movie satisfy the FANS OF TAMIL Cinema, is it a Superb Hit like FB messages posted by Ajith Fans or a utter flop as messages posted by Vijay Fans?

Here goes the Review of Person who is neither a fan of Ajith or Vijay or any Actor in the world..

Movie Starts with Ajith first and the best Punch dialogue which you must have seen in Trailer..Fight Scene after that JUSTIFIES the reason for Movie's "A'' Certificate...Lots of VIOLENCE in the Movie..Not for People who hates Violence..

Ajith -- One Man Army..He is a man who doesn't have RASIGAR MANDRAM but has FANS much more than anyone else in the WORLD in the present generation..

People feel Proud to say that they are AJITH Fan..They don't bother about STORY of the Movie, whether it is a HIT or FLOP, they just blindly follow and love him to the Core..It is enough for them if they watch his face in Theater Screen..

Ajith has done a wonderful job in the Movie..Sadly, he is the only one who has done his job well in Billa 2 Team itself other than the lyrics writer..

"Mathavangaloda BAYAM than Namaku BALAM

Just imagine the WHISTLES and SOUNDS , Ajith fans must have given for these dialogues...

But, if you are not a AJITH Fan, you may feel bored as most of the dialogues spoken by the actor are PUNCH DIALOGUES..

Definitely, Ajith's STYLE and COSTUMES were better in BILLA...

Heroines - Parvathy and Bruna doesn't even have scenes as much as Nayanthara and Namitha in Billa..Parvathy - doesn't fit the role and was wasted..Bruna has provided the OOMPH Factor in the movie similar to Nayanthara..

Yuvan Back Ground Music -- He had great opportunity to give an EXCELLENT Background Music but he has not satisfied his fans..Naan E Background Music was the major reason for Success of that Movie..Seems NAAN EE will Reincarnates again Next WEEK in Tamil Nadu...

Chakri Toleti --NO WORDS.. You will be praising Vishnu Vardhan like anything after watching this Movie..Venkat Prabhu used Ajith effectively in MANKATHA..

Idhayam Song was not there in the Movie..

Gangster Song, which was highly popular was totally wasted...It comes as a BLOOPER in the end..BLOOPER too was also just average and not as good as MANKATHA's bloopers.

Final Verdict:

AJITH FANS - MARANA MASS ( SUPERB HIT)

VIJAY FANS - MARANA FLOP (Utter Flop)

COMMON MAN - Average Movie...

Not as Bad as Alwar, Asal & Not as good as Mankatha or Billa..

Billa 2 - The Rise of a Don
pk_nayar13 July 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Being a massive fan of 'Thala' Ajith since Amarkalam days, it is only natural that I entered the cinema with mountainous expectations. And as the film opened with Thala surrounded by goons, and he utters the now infamous dialogue of how he carefully crafted each and every single second of his life; my expectations skyrocketed. However, as a self- confessed connoisseur of gangster flicks, admittedly, the film fell short on certain aspects. I left the cinema with a tinge of could-have- been better in my head, although my heart thoroughly enjoyed it. The question though is how do I write this review, with my head or with my heart? I decided to go with a bit of both, so here goes.

The prequel to 2007's Billa lives up to a few things of its predecessor. In fact, I would go as far as to say the technical aspect of Billa 2 is simply brilliant. The fantastic cinematography of RD Rajasekhar, with his quick changing shots during the action sequences and the tonal changes the film goes through which perfectly essays the changes that the protagonist/antagonist David Billa experiences as he climbs the ladder towards what he sees as ultimate power; are cinematographic magic. The action sequences, choreographed by Stefan Richter & his team are well done; knives take centre stage in most of the early fights, while bullets take over later on. The stand-out scene has to be the helicopter stunt, where Thala hangs off the edge of the helicopter as he fights one of the baddies at an altitude of 3000-5000 feet. BGM by Yuvan is a massive highlight, as in many scenes it conveys emotions otherwise not seen on screen.

Sudhanshu Pandey is very convincing as the Big Kahuna, his looks suited the character of Abbasi very well; plus him dubbing in his own voice was a plus point. Yog Japee as Ranjeeth does well and he proves to be David Billa's right hand man from the get go and their relationship from 2007's Billa is well established here. The other smaller characters performed sufficiently with Rahman appearing briefly as Jagdeesh. On the other hand, the characterization of Dmitri is one-dimensional, although Vidyut Jamwal does well in his action sequences. Bruna Abdullah's Sameera is stunning in every frame she appears in, but adds very little value to the film, while Parvathy Omanakuttan's Jasmine wasn't really needed except for the added emotional quotient. The two lead actresses' roles could have been trimmed to one singular character instead. The bevy of beauties that appear in the item numbers ooze glamour all out.

Chakri Toleti shows his creative side in two great scenes, the intro and also the picturization of "Unnakule Mirugam"; both of which were amazing. The montage shot as the song plays was one of best picturizations of a mass song I have seen in a long time. One small qualm though, that the "Gangster " & "Unnakule Mirugam" songs had their places swapped instead. Having the montage of Billa at the end would have been more impactful for sure. Chakri does have a future in films if he continues to be experiment with shots, montages and action scenes. However, he could have made the screenplay more tauter. Despite its relatively short running time of 2 hours 7 minutes, the film lags a bit just before the interval, but then it's non-stop action as David Billa completes his journey and finally becomes "Don Billa". Thala Ajith Kumar, what can I say, he is a tour-de-force. Be it the action sequences or his dialogue delivery, I can safely say that there will never be a more convincing don in Tamil films in the near future. Thala's mass was apparent in the cinema, every single time he appears; he captures the audience's attention.

Overall, the film is a stylishly done gangster flick although, not as entertaining as the rip-roaring masala-laced Mankatha or as polished as 2007's Billa, yet it carves a niche of its own. Billa 2 – Paisa Vasool, Thala Marana Mass!!!

pjkarthick13 July 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Screenplay and Direction real bad, we can see movie only for Ajith dialogues, good camera work done but we cannot identify what red epic camera doing in movie. Worst characterization for two kinda heroins and villains. I real like David Billa friend Ranjith character is real done better job. First half and hour was good.I think director don't what to do in middle of movie real disappointed with director guy he missed out huge opportunity Vishnuvardhan may be better than chakri toleti. Billa 2 got hype, We fans aspect huge hit a mass movie from Thala Ajith bocz many vijay fans turn as Ajith fans by Movie Mangatha. If Billa 2 got massive hit then Ajith might got huge fan following but we missed out !!! Review by true Ajith fan !!!

2 hours of non stop action
123kal12313 July 2012
Warning: Spoilers
This is definitely this year's best action movie. As you know this is a prequel which tells us how David Billa becomes India's most wanted. The movie shows us how he climbs to the top of the food chain in a very stylish and slick manner. Many of the action scenes are a treat to watch But there were some parts which looked very amateurish.First of all i don't think any chief minister will travel late at night with just one police jeep for protection and there was one part where Ajith simply walks over an entire Indian defense force guarding an illegal weapons consignment from Russia with a shotgun,a truck and a sidekick!. This i felt were just some of the scenes which stick out like a sore thumb. Plus there was way too much of blood and gore even for a movie rated "A". And some characters just go missing all of a sudden with no explanation whatsoever.Ajith is impressive as Billa though and is one of the main if not only reason to watch this movie. The main villain ( you might have seen him in John Abraham's force) does a decent job. The girls were there for eye candy and do not have any significant parts to play until the climax which i thought was a bit rushed and leaves you wanting for more. The BGM and songs are not world class but keeps you interested. All in all you can watch this. It will definitely entertain you.

Worst film with Weak Script Ever
priyafalldove14 July 2012
Warning: Spoilers
The movie is frustratingly bad to say the least. They believe movie is all about a fancy location, stylish shots, VFX,SFX etc.. But why don't they think story & screenplay are the soul for a film? Billa 2 has no soul, weak script with poor execution and slow narration to mask that some songs were used. They made the film without any purpose. As a huge Ajith fan, i disappointed quite with the film's output. There's no positive part to say about. If at all i have to find it hard, i would say its INTERMISSION! sorry, but the movie is hell a Torturous! Every 10minutes a person is being shot down, beaten to death by Ajith, lousy and loud. I WOULD SAY AVOID the film you can enjoy another 2.10mins in your life.

Warning: Spoilers
i went to watch billa2 in theater without any expectations and i must admit that billa2 is engrossing entertainer.the film lacks pace but it is sincere enough to arrest you in your seat.ajith has once again proved that he is best in the business when it comes to acting.he is the life of the film and his screen presence makes up for slow screenplay.technically cinematographer rajasekar has done a splendid job to bring a visual wonder.yuvan's songs were good and his background music add strength to this movie.editing was okay.the only problem with this movie is slow and predictable screenplay.we have seen some great gangster films like nayakan, pudhupettai etc.billa2 doesn't match the great films like nayakan or pudhupettai but it deserves a watch for ajith's performance and for excellent cinematography.billa2 will definitely become blockbuster but still it could have been better.

Definitely worth a watch, maybe two!
mainhoondon9213 July 2012
Warning: Spoilers
my first review, so ll be quick. saw this movie with small expectations though i liked Billa(which made me his fan). The director has tried some new ways in story telling, which was good, what i liked was that songs were cut short so as to not drag the movie, people should learn from this guy. And one cant ever find fault with Ajith! he simply waltzes in n out!

But few scenes n other actor's dialogs could have been better! Especially the scene where he robs an arms consignment! That was plain stupid!

Comparison with Scarface do come up, but the story is Universal, this is how gangster's are made!

And thumbs up for the stunts- not over the top and stylish at the same time :)

Scarface in the 1st half and then boring action sequences
anupviswanath13 July 2012
Warning: Spoilers
I know people won't like me saying this so plain and straight forward, but Billa 2 was a let down for me as I had high expectations. Billa(2007) the new one did justice to old Billa(Rajni Sir's) and so I liked it even though the story was same, it never let down the standards of old Billa movie. Billa 2 started off with graphics portrayal and horrible music(introduction scene likely resembling Call of duty wallpapers(game), and then immigrant from Sri Lanka to India ending up in refugee campmade me think of just one movie 'SCARFACE' and I was shocked to see every detail from SCARFACE movie being copied and pasted into Billa. From the start of refugee camp they started copy paste job Then the scene where Tony Montana in Scarface does the job only for his rate was copied in Billa, the club scene where Tony montana's sister dances around another guy and he doesn't like it also the same except here in Billa its his sister's daughter(who likes him),the seaside hotel of the Boss even was copied without shame,Boss's lady becoming his lady, he coordinating drug and arms deal and becoming more powerful and finally his whole attitude was taken from SCARFACE till almost the 1st half of the movie. The second half was too boring with Sin City style depiction and boring, unconvincing& naive action sequences, bullets flying about and he getting hit 2 times but no problem in the next scenes. Hats off to the 4 writers for the scene by scene copy paste of Scarface into Indian movie as Billa 2 and music was too boring and not needed in reality. The background score for Billa was the only thing I liked in the movie. Either the writers have to think and build up a story or we viewers shouldn't watch foreign movies so as to avoid saying this is a copy paste from so and so movie. Anyways for me it was waste of time and money. Hope they don't make Billa 3 out of some foreign movie. And SCARFACE fans better not watch this movie.

Gangster movie that doesn't pack a solid punch
cenaarun13 July 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Billa 2 has widely been acclaimed as being India's first prequel. Audiences are already familiar with David Billa as a character, thanks to the impact of the earlier Billas which showcased the aura, the daredevilry and the sheer guts of this man.

Now, Billa 2 was supposed to trace the roots of David Billa. Billa is a man who is always on the lookout for the next big thing and loyalty counts as his biggest virtue. The journey that David Billa goes through in his quest for total control and domination in his domain is what Billa 2 is, in a nutshell.

It is a typical gangster movie with loads of villains and an invincible hero who has truckloads of charisma and style.

The fairly engaging first half of Billa 2 happens in coastal Tamil Nadu and later moves on to Goa. The intro scene wherein Ajith is engaged in a ferocious fight sequence and the indigenous title credits are gripping. The dialogues by Era Murugan and Mohamed Zafar are the highlight in this segment. They are filled with punch and meaning. Sample this "Na Agadhi da, Anaadha illa", "Mathavanoda Bayam dan nambaloda Balam". There are more such dialogues that are guaranteed to please Ajith's fans.

The tempo is lost in the second half. The two heroines, Parvathy Omanakuttan and Bruna Abdullah are more like guest cameos. It is disheartening to note that Parvathy doesn't live up to the hype. Bruna Abdullah looks ravishing and the scenes where she flaunts her bikini body are sure to please the male populace.

The villains, Sudhanshu and Vidyut are majestic and have terrific screen presence. Vidyut's prowess at stunts has been positioned in his introductory fight sequence. Sudhanshu has to remain the cold and calculating don and doesn't get to flex his muscles like Vidyut.

Rahman has a blink and you miss type cameo while Manoj K Jayan, Krishna Kumar and Sriman have negative roles which they have done adequately. Ilavarasu impresses in the first half and he is missed in the second half when the action shifts gears.

Ultimately, this movie is made for Ajith's fans. Ajith looks fit in the first half while in the second half we get to see him in his typical suave avatar. The ferocious eyes in the fight sequences are Ajith's biggest strength. His daring guts in the climax helicopter stunt have already been well documented but one does feel that the impact created by this aerial fight isn't as great as expected.

The fight sequences done by three separate stunt masters stand out for their ruthless nature. The fist cuffs are fast and they are violent to say the least. The A certificate seems justified. There are lots of stylish gun shots and blasts that send the pulse racing. But the impact created by all these explosions isn't great, again.

The editing by Suresh Urs could have been tauter. The 'Yedho Mayakkam' song and the needless short belly dance number in the second half hamper the movie's flow. That said, the editing and VFX in the 'Unakkulle Mirugam' song remind you of the flashy style that you see in Guy Ritchie movies.

It is also disappointing to see the 'Gang Gang Gangster' song being reduced to a mere end credits song.

R.D.Rajasekhar's cinematography has made sure that the movie has a grand look. The songs look glossy, the picture resolution is extra-ordinary thanks to the Red Epic camera and RDR's work in the helicopter sequence earns extra brownie points.

To conclude, Billa 2 will please hardcore action fans and Ajith fans in particular. The emotional connect goes down thanks to a laborious second half. But, the idea of making a prequel and the grand scale of the movie make sure that the movie isn't a tiresome experience either. Given the expectations, somehow you feel that the end product hasn't been delivered.

Verdict: Gangster movie that doesn't pack a solid punch

Billa - GOD in their agenda!
gauthamhits0813 July 2012
If you've played GTA or MAFIA kinda games, you'll be irritated to watch this movie! To be frank, David Billa moves around with all freedom after the number of murders he commits(even it can be excused!) But, he executes everyone just like that! To be precise he plays 'GOD'. The movie started well after the credits. It traveled well until Billa joins ANNACHI. After that it gets predictable and monotonous. Sometimes certain scenes won't even stand to our predictions, don't get too excited, The fact is that it's worse than that! So when you start to predict, If you wanna be right with your prediction then expect the next scene to be very normal and the twists implied to be the twists during stone age cinema. The camera was good. All the scenes are the same and that is - BILLA kills boss to be the boss! Only the character artists and locations are changed! They've tried the SIN CITY type in one song which I'd say was indeed new and nice! Ajith plays his part well...Camera was nice, so were the locations. Costumes at certain places were inappropriate, Otherwise it was savvy. Editing was simple and nice. Technically the movie was good. The pre production wasn't effective enough I guess. Bad screenplay alone lets the movie down. One thing is evident from movies like these- They're not allowing the audience to grow! When this kinda taste prevails among the audience, I'm afraid even Great movies like THE GODFATHER (Francis Ford Coppola) won't stand tall! .... SAD!

Movie does not live upto the hype
dreambigwin13 July 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Those who get to the movie after the high of mangaata, expecting a similar fare have to contend with a fat Ajith, bad story and poor direction.

Continuity and logic have taken a back seat in the movie. Also Ajith has not lost any weight to justify a prequel. In fact he has put on weight, poorly shown by his costumes as well.

It opens with Ajith being in a refugee camp. It is not clear where the refugees are from or why they are refugees. After some required number of fights, he is sent on a mission by a smuggler. On the way he kills policemen wannabe's with impunity. He makes new friends with his ways and bitter enemies. Making every use of any opportunity, he scales up the criminal organization and reaches lofty heights.

In the haste to make the movie, poor editing comes to the front. The punchline often leaves us wondering, if it was ever needed. Like for example, Ajith delivers his punchline hanging out of a chopper.

Picturization and some rotoscopy effects are state of the art and show strong technical skills of the team. However, they do not make up for the weak story line and poor editing.

All in all, if you want to stay in the Mangaata high, and hold thala in high respect, you would do well to skip this movie.

A fitting Prequel but lacks some pace and material
srinath_msn14 July 2012
When you leave the movie theater after watching Billa 2, you wonder if its the best thing that has happened to the gangster genre of Kollywood or even for the Billa series. But, through the course of its narration, it misses the much requited pace and becomes slightly predictable.

The narrative style is entirely new to Tamil Cinema and Billa 2 surely has its moments of awe, which is largely due to the lead actor Ajith Kumar's screen presence and the way he tricks his rivals to death. There is a lot of gun slinging and fewer song sequences than in Billa, but they contribute to the story and keeps you in the edge of the seat. Ajith Kumar and director Chakri Toleti have put together some serious hard work and their efforts and results, are a treat on-screen. Yuvan Shankar Raja's background score and songs hugely supplement the story with its action sequences and his music is out of the world!

A few scenes could have been added to brief even more about David Billa's rift with the cops and fellow mafias. The style of narration is excellent a refreshingly new one though. Its impressiveness lies in the actors supporting it, fine camera work and top notch BGM.

Verdict: Mankatha > Billa 2 > Billa Points: 8 out of 10

Easily the Worst film of the year!!!!
msmariajoe14 July 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Gangsta film that has no story, no proper screenplay, no neat performance by lead actors, no right music, no good songs nor catchy BGM is what this pathetic ever film BILLA 2 offers you. If i have to blame for the worst output, i would do it on two persons. i)Chakri Tnleti(Director) ii)Ajith(Actor) Chakri has no idea in film making and story wise he sucked it up. Ajith for accepting this film that has no scope to perform and showcase any acting skills. The most you expect this films, the most annoyingly bad film it is. Instead of making this film, Mr.Toleti should have got an opportunity in directing mega serials in TV channels. Result- Nothing it offers. But will suck your money if you go watch it.

Good Action packed movie

Billa 2 Movie Review!

One the most awaited movie of the year Billa 2 released globally with record number of prints. Will it satisfy our expectations…read on to know more

First of all Billa 2 is a Don movie, so if we say there is no comedy or sentiments in it we must be joking coz we should expect what we should expect from a Don movie. And the movie delivers it with loads of action. Kudos to the director Chakri Toleti for not succumbing to the stereotype masala path and delivering a honest movie without much of deviations.

The story is simple, how David Billa becomes Don, because of situations and people around him. Digging the story further is not of much use since the movie does not rely on story.

With not much experience in the cast Ajith carries the movie single handedly with ease and will make you sit and watch the entire movie without giving us any dull moments. He is fantastic in action sequences and his screen presence ensures you don't need many other reasons to go and watch the movie. His risks in stunt scenes are worth mentioning and yet again he proved that he is dedicated and takes any level of risk to satisfy his audience. His fan base in abroad is sure to get a good increase coz of his portrayal as a refugee.

Parvathy Omanakuttan and Bruna Abdullah does not have much scope to perform but they help a lot in adding to the glamour portion of the movie, as expected from a Don movie heroines. One might feel that they would have utilized well. Other actors are sufficiently done their job with a special mention to Elavarasu. Both the main villains Sudanshu Pandey and Vidyut Jammanwal are promising and done a neat job. Era Murugan dialogues are short but creates a good impact with the audience. One would expect action movies should have long and loud punch dialogues, but because of Billa 2'S slick nature dialogues cope up well and packs a punch.

Technically the movie is excellent thanks to great camera work RD Rajasekhar and good music by Yuvan. Until the last half an hour we might feel that Yuvan did not live up to the expectations on BGM, but he delivers well in the end, especially the momnet when the BGM merges to Billa 1 theme was fantastic and the audience went crazy.Songs are good and picturized well. That Georgian song is nice to listen. Gangster song comes only at the end bloopers which a slight disappointment considering the popularity it gained prior to the release of the movie but the other way you would think that is a perfect song for end bloopers.

Box Office Prospects:

Movie is sold at slightly less than 30 crores which is very reasonable and is safe enough for the distributors to laugh their way to bank despite the A rating of the movie. Movie will easily manage to collect 60 - 70 crores in 10 days as predicted by Aascar Ravichandran.

Overall Verdict:

Action movie lovers and Thala fans will lap it up. The violent scenes may keep the female audience bit away but not much sexually explicit scenes as told by rumors, you can watch it with family if you can digest the blood and gore during action scenes. Just go for it to see a Tamil movie focusing only on subject rather than mixing up mindless comedies and needless dialogues.

A neat spicy action briyani from the team.

Billa 2 is a clear winner

A Random Juggling of Suits , Bullets and Blood
saran1117 July 2012
Warning: Spoilers
What's It About ! A Srilankan Refugee with the thirst to be more and to be better , moves up the ladder to become one of the most feared Dons by eliminating all those who he thinks, are his enemies. Actually he moves up ,pretty darn slow !!! Analysis : When they re-made the yesteryear Billa , there was so much expectations around it and it did deliver what was expected and acquired a cult status . Now we have Billa-2, supposedly the first Prequel in Indian Cinema - a movie about the Don's history . Chakri Toleti , given such a huge opportunity has miserably failed to deliver a worthy prequel . Billa wants to be a DON and he becomes one is the storyline . But how did he come to the level , should have been dealt with much care , rather than a dumb screenplay and nothing but murder all over . Be it the hero or the villains , there is no proper characterization . Everyone just comes , walks around and dies . Though the first half is manageable , the second half is a total disaster . There is not a single scene in the movie that will make you wanna see again .It is difficult to sustain interest as the pace is going no-where expect to the floors . The Dialogues is the only positive thing about the movie . After providing such huge hits with his previous films , Yuvan is seriously disappointing . This is definitely not the kind of music for Billa-2 , especially after what he provided for Mankatha and Billa-1 . Even a good actor , with looks and talent , will need a good screenplay and a powerful music , to satisfy - if not the gen pop , at least his fans . The movie has nothing to invite the audience for the second time . And seriously why are there only items numbers in the movie ?? Probably that is a strategy to bring in repeated audience . Butbelieve me , it is not going to work . Performances : Performance ?? – Where and who ??? is what you will think about when you actually see the movie . Mankatha had great scope for Ajith and he did the negative role with so much finesse and it was hugely appreciated . But this movie gives him nothing . Walking around with blood and arock hard face isn't good enough . Almost all the characters in the movie has nothing to express . They just move their jaws to utter the dialogs , and that's all there is and nothing more . There are a few scenes which are made to be get huge response from the crowd , but are just frivolous . (Especially the scene where he saves Parvathy and the climax helicopter sequence) . Well the Ladies !! Bruna Abdulla is just bad.. There s nothing good about her . Parvathy Omanakuttan , despite her looks ,fails to provide an impression . Villain Abbassi is OK but Dimitriv is hilarious!!! Bottom-Line : Billa 2 is naive and boring . Ajith and great cinematography alone cannot run a show . Music , screenplay & direction are just terribly bad . Wont even satisfy Ajith fans . Billa 2 the beginning – Probably the End for Chakri Toleti . Rating : 1.5/5 (for the dialogs and camera work) .

A Classy film courageously made albeit with few glitches but an enjoyable watch. Truly the first of the genre-focused kind of movies in Tamil.

Billa 2- A review

If you were expecting Billa 2 to be a conventional 'masala' flick with 'mass-oriented' scenes interspersed with the story of a gangster, then you'd be disappointed. Billa 2 is a serious movie till the end. At the outset, it should be mentioned that the movie has scenes adapted from Scarface and The Godfather. It is not like there hasn't been any Tamil movie that ripped off scenes from The Godfather and the like. But they were done hitherto, only as a part of the conventional formula of commercial film-making. Presumably, for the first time in Tamil, we have a commercial flick that is not formula-oriented but genre-focused. Right from the titles till the end, there is no digression. The heartening thing is that a Tamil movie on the gangster theme has nothing to do with the actor's stardom. Ajith's star value is only a bonus to the film. There isn't a single sentence that is out of place; nor a scene that didn't contribute to the narration. The Billa team should be highly commended for utterly avoiding the frivolous aspects of commercial cinema.

Billa 2 comes with a tight script with a single-minded aim to the tell the his/story of a man who eventually becomes a feared gangster. Though it looks a straight-forward plot, its thickness makes it all the more gripping. Eschewing trivialities like dream songs or incongruous scenes or BGM, the film has maintained greater intensity; and the lack of many 'wide angle' (pun unintended) shots added to that intensity.

The most memorable aspects are the stunts and the one-liners. It should be easily said that, for Ajith, these stunts are the never-before-done kind. The moves were fresh and believable with technique reflecting Billa's merciless character. The stunts in the helicopter are nerve-wracking but that should not take the focus away from other refreshing stunt scenes. Added to this, one-liners given to Ajith are sharper than the knives he uses. The lack of verbosity again adds to the sting.

Underplay in Ajith's acting is what makes the film more realistic. The eyes show hardly any emotion apart from a cold desire to do what he does best: kill people who cross his way and make it to the top.

Yuvan's music is fitting. No trumpets blown for Ajith's introduction or fight scenes. He has helped underplay the first-half suiting the plot well. The Billa Theme is heard only towards the end. 'Unakulle Mirugam' captures the mood well. R D Rajasekar's work with the Red Epic camera has worked out well. The tint is maintained well. It gives greater focus on the narration. Visuals for 'Unakulle Mirugam' song are very different and raises Ajith's fans from their seats.

For a change, the ladies have their bit to do than just dance and love the hero. Both Parvathy and Bruno can improve their performances. But their newness shows. The villains' characterization could have been stronger matching Ajith fist for fist.

Though the plot is tight and thick, it is also very flat. Nothing different really happens apart from Billa becoming a Don. It is the same one-way movement of the plot that dulls the edge of narration. Since it is a prequel, it is obvious that Billa eventually becomes a Don. And there was no space in the plot to suggest otherwise. Effort was not taken to break that predictability.

Another major drawback is Ajith's weight. The previous Billa had a slimmer Ajith and it wouldn't be logical to suggest that Billa in the prequel has more weight. (As a fan, I don't mind his weight but as a critic, it doesn't fit in both logically and chronologically) Billa 2 also has a couple of scenes that beats one's sense of logic. When surrounded by armed coastal guards, there are better ingenious ways to escape than just drive the truck past them. The director could have used the richness of the plot to create sharper scenes that all kinds of audiences enjoy.

However, the courage of the film-makers should be commended for willing to sacrifice the winning-formula and depend on realistic narration. If all audiences accept, this would, perhaps, be 'the beginning' (again, pun unintended) of a new commercial formula for action movies in Tamil.

Not Worth The Wait
qweqqweer13 July 2012
The biggest strength of Billa 2 is undoubtedly its hero. He does his part of looking good whenever he's allowed to, wields his gun in style and delivers the dialogs in his signature style. The film in general lacks pace and drama. The experimental style editing hampers the narrative than improve it. Though the film's not longer than a quarter and two hours Billa's story until his transition takes its own sweet time to unveil itself.

And yet you wish there was more to it than you saw, perhaps a bit more of drama. You comes out feeling his past somehow isn't as gruesome as to make him as dreaded a don as he later becomes, or his circumstances are not as cruel as to win our instant sympathy. Nor are his moves to eliminate his rivals as clever, calculating or cunning as we'd have liked them to be.

David Billa hardly has any fun in life except for that one dance instance. His intimacy with anyone, for that matter even his partner Ranjith played by Yog Jappee, who remains faithful to him throughout, is hardly ever explored.

Disappointing film of the YEAR!!!
Sandy14314 July 2012
Warning: Spoilers
With huge expectation , I SAW billa 2 last night. The Film comes out terrible, boring, rotten all the way. Billa Ajith gets orphaned due the war between Sinhalese and Tamils and how he goes to tamilnadu , reforms as an underworld don and kill persons who were the cause of his family murder. Hilarious script and not at all even average !! Ajith performance is irritating whenever he shoots down, kill people and utter some non sense one liners. To equalize that, music comes out really worst , and other performers found unnoticed and did not justify their role at all. I really feel Ajith should asking people if they want his Briyani and start asking keenly to stories. Verdict :- WORST DISAPPOINTING FILM OF THE YEAR
