Jagame Thandhiram (2021)
Cringefest
Couldn't wait to watch this movie but the opening 3 minutes made it clear to me that I will have to fast forward once every minute to finish watching this. Completely disappointed. The foreign actors were made to look like a bunch of apes. Hope they got paid decently as no actor would want to look like that on screen. The hero Suruli is not even likable. He basically eliminates all opposition to Peter the main villain who goes around in a car with the number plate "white power" and then changes overnight cause of a few sentiment scenes. The only good thing about the movie was that they were brave enough to show the Sri lankan army bombing the Tamil civilian population but I felt it was used as a means to get us to support Suruli who is frankly as bad as Peter. Watch it if you like watching people making a fool of themselves.

Wash your eyes
Taking a huge risk I decided to tag along with a few friends of mine who assured me that the movie would be so bad that it would be good. But what unfolded before our unassuming eyes was something very different entirely. The movie is about a group of women who have issues with their love life and are secretly suffering with their earth quake like problems. Enter our messaih with decent clothes to solve these issues. It seems to me like I was stuck in a loop cause I believe I was watching the same sequence of scenes over and over again. There were some scenes that were so unbelievably bad that it made me feel a bit irked. I am not an expert but I don't think you can kidnap some one with a kitchen knife nor can a group of battle hardned gangsters be defeated by throwing large empty blue barrels at them. Having used up all our will power to stay until then we decided to leave after figuring out that the movie would only get worse. I didn't want to Know what happened at the end. You could try and let everyone know if you want. All the luck in the world to you.
Bairavaa (2017)
Movie needs some editing
This movie was made for the fans. The teaser and trailer made that clear. So for the people complaining I ask what did you expect? This is a masala movie. The hero will kick ass and win the girl's heart in the end and along the way will fight, dance, sing, say one liners and even try his hand at comedy. For the information of those high IQ critics who are rubbishing this movie, there is a market out there for movies like this. There are still people living in towns and villages who want just to be entertained and do not want to see their own realistic lives shown to them. You might have noticed vijay's movies don't normally get a clean release, his enemies out number his friends and inspite of this and movies like sura he still is one of if not the star that comes to your mind when it comes to kollywood commercial cinema. Bairava needs a lot of editing. If they had done that properly I think it would have been as entertaining as some of his recent hits.
Vedalam (2015)
Another flash back Don movie
Ajith has always excelled at playing characters with shades of Grey and until now it worked wonders. Ever since that Rajini movie came out every other Tamil hero has tried to do something similar and failed to meet expectations. Ajith himself did this in Jana. Still, this may be the closest a star may have come to replicate Basha. Though the plot is different the themes are the same. The one major difference is that in that movie Rajini stays away from trouble in this one Ajith goes looking for it. Being a Vijay fan I did struggle a lot to sit through the terrible comedy and numerous hero worship scenes in the movie. But if you remove all that you end up with a Masala movie that can be watched once. I wanted to give this 5 but the message about women empowerment gets an extra star. Go for it if you need a Masala movie to forget the real world for a few hours.
Kick (2014)
proof that Copywood cant make action movies.
After watching and surviving the Hindi movies of the 90s i thought i could sit through anything but along came Kick to smash my immunity system. Kick is like a broken record that drastically brings down your level of patience and makes you ask God if this was his way of punishing you?.Yet again we have a local Robin Hood who steals from the Rich for the sake of the poor. In the process many laws are broken. Our hero even goes to a foreign country and unleashes a savage attack on that country. Even the softest Government in the world will consider this an act of war. But since its for a good cause we are supposed to side with him. This however is not the story. The movie is about two obsessive creatures. One a woman who cant get over her ex and another a police inspector who cant seem to catch a thief (Just like Dhoom Cop Jai Dixit). How these two realize that they are obsessing over the same person and what happens next forms the rest of the story. If you became his fan after Wanted then you might enjoy this but rest of the country can give this a miss.
Dhoom:3 (2013)
A story about a bike that can fly!
Apart from a few minutes in the second half where the twins argue with each other there is nothing much in this movie that will stay with you. Mumbai inspector Jai Dixit must be the only cop on earth who gets to be called a "role model" for letting thieves get away. His auto introduction was unintentionally funny as was his side kicks strange one liners which left one wondering if they were written after a couple of drinks. The story is simple. American cops cant find any one else in America who can translate a couple of lines in Hindi so they hire Indian cop Jai and his side kick to do it for them. But when they get there they find that the main problem is a bike. Now this is no ordinary bike. It can fly, shape shift and you can also ride it on a rope(intriguing since i thought it weighed a tonne). Obviously they will have to wait till the end to catch this amazing bike. Well Amir khan is my favorite Bollywood actor. I have lost count of how many times i have watched 3 idiots and DCH. He is probably why i am giving this 4 stars. His twin act was class. Its a shame they could not get the action scenes right. In short, its a one time watch for me even if you are his fan.
Biriyani (2013)
Time pass
Well its safe to say that this movie was made for young men in particular. The family seated next to me and my friends mysteriously disappeared twenty minutes into the movie. The first 40 minutes is full scenes that will make you laugh if you are a Prem G fan or weep in agony if you are not. Its been a while since Tamil cinema gave us a who on god's green earth killed him thriller, so i guess you can let the first half pass. The Second half is much better than the first one and i must admit i was shocked when they revealed who the killer was. Karthi has had a lot of practice playing these Masala roles so he does not disappoint. Mandy Thakur got the biggest cheers when she came on screen(no surprises there as the audience was mostly male). You Tube Puyal Sam Anderson,Jai and a host of other Venkat Prabhu regulars make appearances here and there. The music was a major plus.It helped carry the first part of the movie and added a lot to the second one.In short, you can go for this if have nothing else to do.
All in All Azhagu Raja (2013)
Vile Rubbish
I should have seen this coming when All in All Azhagu Raja's lead actress refused to promote this movie in any way.Not since Sura or Asal has a Tamil movie poured so much torture on the Tamil speaking world. This movie simply put is horrible. If you think about it this Director's movies all basically have the same plot.Have a guy chase a girl with the help of Santhanam.Alas even eternal sidekick Santhanam cant save this colossal failure. Karthi needs to be making movies like Paruthiveeran. This is now his third flop in a row. Recommending this movie to anyone is akin to murder. I can't fathom why any one would want to produce this? don't they read scripts in Madras anymore? After three back to back hits Director Rajesh has taken the Tamil movie going public for granted. Please keep away from this brain cell killing experiment.
Billa 2 (2012)
2 hours of non stop action
This is definitely this year's best action movie. As you know this is a prequel which tells us how David Billa becomes India's most wanted. The movie shows us how he climbs to the top of the food chain in a very stylish and slick manner. Many of the action scenes are a treat to watch But there were some parts which looked very amateurish.First of all i don't think any chief minister will travel late at night with just one police jeep for protection and there was one part where Ajith simply walks over an entire Indian defense force guarding an illegal weapons consignment from Russia with a shotgun,a truck and a sidekick!. This i felt were just some of the scenes which stick out like a sore thumb. Plus there was way too much of blood and gore even for a movie rated "A". And some characters just go missing all of a sudden with no explanation whatsoever.Ajith is impressive as Billa though and is one of the main if not only reason to watch this movie. The main villain ( you might have seen him in John Abraham's force) does a decent job. The girls were there for eye candy and do not have any significant parts to play until the climax which i thought was a bit rushed and leaves you wanting for more. The BGM and songs are not world class but keeps you interested. All in all you can watch this. It will definitely entertain you.
Oru Kal Oru Kannadi (2012)
Watch it for Santhanam and his one liners
Let me start of by saying that I liked the director's first two movies. They were fresh, innovative and fun. But sadly his third movie is nothing but a recycled version of his first two. They were some extremely funny scenes thanks to Santhanam but at the same time many of the jokes fell flat. The story is about a middle class boy who goes after a kushboo look alike(he even tells her that to which most girls would throw whatever they had in their hands at you but not our heroine, she takes it as a compliment).she also happens to be the assistant commissioner's daughter. After a couple of scenes and a song our heroine quickly falls for our hero and then they break up and then patch up and then break up and then well I lost count. The reason for their love hate relationship is Santhanam. I guess that's why they named it one stone (Santhanam) one mirror (the hero & heroine). There is also a needless side track about the boy's parents which prompted many people to go out for a smoke. The acting was average at best. The heroine laughed when she was supposed to be crying and cried when she was supposed to be laughing. The hero (also the producer) was completely over shadowed by the real lead in the movie santhanam. If you go along with your friends to watch this film you will have plenty of lol moments but be sure to lower your expectations.
Winner (2003)
Not bad if you like Tamil commercial movies
I think this was Prashanth's last big hit. Any way He had been MIA for a while and had two big releases recently both of which well didn't stay long in the movie theaters. Its sad because luck has not been on his side professionally and personally.Winner is what Prashanth can do if he had good material to work with. The story is simple a city guy goes to visit his wealthy grandparents after a long time and falls in love with a girl belonging to a family of thugs who love taking out their "aruvaals" for making a point. It worked because of the packaging of the movie. It's biggest strength was Vadivel. Even Vivek fans will agree that he was extremely funny in this movie. Together with the glamorous Kiran and some decent songs, Sundar.c made a winner out of the movie.
Velayudham (2011)
DIWALI'S Surprise WINNER!!!!!!!
Prior to this movie's release a lot of people wrote vijay off claiming that surya had overtaken vijay in terms of star power. Well i do not think those words will ever be uttered again in a long long time. I went for this movie a week after watching 7am arivu(English meaning 7th nonsense) yes, i needed some time to recover from it. I had no expectations but by the end of the movie i was surprised by how much the movie entertained me. I think this was Vj's best since ghilli. He looked like he enjoyed making the movie. Everything was in it's place, the songs, the jokes, the fights(do not worry laws of gravity are respected). Amongst the female leads, Genelia had the role which drives the plot forward the other one was their only for eye candy and the sister did her part well.Among the action scenes the train part certainly catches the eye and the climax in the stadium was certainly better than i expected it to be. The movie will not win awards or stay with you after its viewing but it will entertain you.Give it a try and chillax, it might surprise you.
7aum Arivu (2011)
7th sense makes no sense
I went in to the theater expecting a world class movie especially after the director and hero went out of their way to assure us that the movie will be a milestone in Tamil cinema. And the initial 15 minutes set the movie up nicely and it only increased my expectations but what followed was a horror show which will make you regret paying the price for your ticket. I seriously do not know what this movie was about? Was it about kung fu? or Bodhidharma? or china being wary of India as a competitor? or Shuthi's genetic memory research which will help cure children born with deadly diseases? or was it about today's generations' failure to embrace the Tamil culture? or was it about trying to stop a virus from spreading ? or was it just another Tamil movie where the good guy comes back from the dead to finish the bad guy? I have no idea why Surya signed up for this movie, and his chemistry with Shruthi hassan was as good as a diwali rainy day. The music will put you to sleep with the Chinese track being suspiciously similar to a nursery rhyme. The villain could have brought some well needed class to the table but was wasted. I mean why would anyone want to watch an hour of him staring at the camera when he had brilliant king fu moves up his arsenal. The ending will shock you with the hero claiming that all the "clever Tamils" have ditched Tamil nadu and I don't blame them with movies like this to watch I would rather take my chances abroad.
Sura (2010)
50 th movie makes it 50 times worse
If ever there was a movie which deserved 0 stars its this one. There were times when i had to check with my friends if they were seeing what i was because i simply could not believe the nonsense that was being played on screen.I am a die hard Vijay fan but this one is very difficult to defend. The movie was made to tell us how good a human being Vijay is and that if we vote for him he will turn Tamil nadu into a paradise. He interacts with the audience more than the characters in the movie telling us how good a role model he is and we should all be like him.The whole cast must be ashamed of themselves and should do penance for dishing out a disaster like this. Pluses:Vijay's dance Negatives:the rest of the movie. Please do not watch this even if you are paid to. You will end up depressed. Having said that Vijay has promised his fans he will henceforth work with reputed directors so there is no way he can make another movie as bad as this. The trailer of velayudham looks OK but all of us are waiting for Nanban which i think will be the movie which will make us forgive Vijay for making Sura.
Varalaaru (2006)
This movie saved Ajith's sinking market
This movie went through a lot of trouble before it came out. I remember a group of Ajith fans saying that he had no luck at all. And when it released it some how managed to survive the monsoon. May be because Simbu's so called romantic thriller chased people away to this one or there was something about the movie which made you want to see it. Anyway this is Ajith's best performance in years. he makes you forget the many poor aspects of the movie. The songs grow on you. I think the sentiment scenes worked really well with the audience. both the heroines have decent screen time. there are probably a few unwanted jokes placed in the movie. And yes i do not know what the title was all about ? but i give it 10 because i have never seen a movie single handedly saved by an actor.
Kuruvi (2008)
probably the worst movie of 2008
initially i went in with a lot of expectations cause these are the people who gave us Gilli but this movie gave me a headache which lasted for 3 hours.I don't know why they made this movie? no story seriously guys just borrowing scenes from old movies and stitching them together doesn't make a new movie. i m really sad that they think the Tamil audience are fools and will buy anything just because a superstar is in it.And of course the plus points :some of the songs were OK and Vj's dance was good as usual apart from that nothing else....well i hope he changes the heroine next time because he is basically playing the same character again and again and his movies have nothing else to offer.
