Following in the tradition of our V/H/S trilogy and Southbound, we attempted something with sci-fi roots that includes segments directed by Eduardo Sanchez (The Blair Witch Project, Lovely Molly, Exists), Gregg Hale (V/H/S/2), Timo […]...

Portals is a sci-fi anthology, from a number of directors. Filmmakers involved in the segments include: Eduardo Sanchez (The Blair Witch Project), Timo Tjahjanto (The Night Comes for Us), Gregg Hale (Lovely Molly) and Liam O'Donnell. Each director has focused their story on a blackout and around the appearance of a series of strange objects. Very much a thriller, this title will have its World Premiere tonight, in Los Angeles. A wider release will follow later this month. The trailer shows several black obelisks appearing across the city. Curious, characters interact with the black objects, with some sucked in and trapped. Chaos ensues as it becomes apparent that something malicious is operating these strange mirror-like boxes. After the World Premiere, Portals will have a wider screening on October 25th. On this second showing date, the film will be available across the United States, in cities like: Atlanta, Austin, Boston, Detroit,...

Happy October, readers! Over the last few years, I’ve put together various lists of horror movies from a variety of streaming platforms, but for 2018, I thought it might be fun to do some themed lists of what’s available on all the different streaming services, in case you happened to be in a mood for a particular kind of film. Because let’s be honest, we’ve all fallen down the rabbit hole of endlessly searching for something to watch after we’ve scrolled through hundreds of available titles on Netflix, Vudu, Tubi TV, Shudder, and the like.
So, for this first installment of our special “From Streams to Screams” column series this month, I’ve put together a rundown of 25 different supernatural-themed movies that should undoubtedly get you into the Halloween spirit (see what I did there?). And be sure to check back right here on Daily Dead...

The upcoming 13th episode of the 13th season of “Supernatural,” titled “Devil’s Bargain,” is notable for two reasons: (1) it’s directed by none other than Eduardo Sanchez (The Blair Witch Project, Lovely Molly), and (2) it features a guest appearance by series star Jensen Ackles’ wife, Danneel Ackles (“One Tree Hill,” The Roommate). June ended up being a particularly busy month of releases, and here’s a look at three different indie films that I had the opportunity to check out over the last several weeks:
Camera Obscura: For his feature film directorial debut, co-writer/director Aaron B. Koontz concocts his own “weird episode of Goosebumps” (to borrow a phrase from the film) in Camera Obscura, which feels like a mash-up of Shutter (the original, not the remake) and Final Destination, with a bit of a slasher twist thrown in for good measure. Koontz deftly maneuvers through familiar genre tropes to create an unexpected horror treat, anchored by a strong performance from Christopher Denham (Shutter Island, The Bay).
In Camera Obscura, we meet photographer Jack Zeller (Denham), who has been struggling with Ptsd after returning from shooting photos in the Middle East. His supportive fiancée, Claire (Nadja Bobyleva), decides to pick him...

As a producer on projects like Starry Eyes and The Sacrament, Camera Obscura co-writer/director Aaron B. Koontz has been a fixture of the indie horror film community for some time now. Koontz recently celebrated the VOD and On Demand release of his debut feature, Camera Obscura, which ambitiously blends together the psychological horror/haunted camera/slasher genres for a truly unexpected cinematic treat.
Daily Dead recently had the opportunity to speak to Koontz about his experiences working on Camera Obscura, and he discussed how he approached both the story of the film as well as its conflicted protagonist, Jack Zeller (portrayed by Christopher Denham), how his earlier career helped prepare him to take the directorial reins, the joy of being able to collaborate with friends, and more.

On Friday, June 9th, Aaron B. Koontz’s Camera Obscura hits theaters before making its way onto VOD platforms everywhere just a few days later on the 13th. The psychological horror film stars Christopher Denham (Money Monster, The Bay), Nadja Bobyleva (Bridge of Spies), Noah Segan (Looper, Starry Eyes, Brick), and also features some other stellar supporting talent that should be familiar to genre fans, including Chase Williamson (John Dies at the End, Beyond the Gates), Andrew Sensenig (We Are Still Here), and Gretchen Lodge (Lovely Molly).
Daily Dead recently spoke to Segan about working on Camera Obscura with both Koontz and Denham, with whom he shares most of his scenes with. Segan also chatted about the privilege of being able to make movies with your friends, getting to be the “good guy,” and more.

About a decade ago, the team behind the biggest hit of the decade wrote a screenplay for the prequel. It had been a long time coming. In 1999, the shaky-cam horror movie “The Blair Witch Project” grossed nearly $250 million around the world, turning the microbudget chronicle of a few friends who venture into the woods and never returned into an unexpected phenomena. “We had a plan for if it failed, what do with our finances without declaring bankruptcy,” said Eduardo Sanchez, who co-directed with Daniel Myrick. “We didn’t have a plan if it became the highest-grossing independent film of all time.”
However, distributor Artisan Entertainment had plenty of ideas. In the immediate aftermath of “The Blair Witch Project” taking off around the world, the company announced its investment two follow-ups, only one of which came to fruition. Myrick and Sanchez, eager to try something different, instead threw themselves into raising...

You know the one about the young girl who gets possessed, nobody believes it, and someone of power has to perform an exorcism in the 3rd act? Sure you do. We get this movie or some variation therein, a few times a year. Sometimes it’s a demon, sometimes it’s a ghost, but it always ends up being roughly the same film outline. Popping bones and inhuman movement or contortion is a given, speaking in lounges, and there’s a fake out where you think the entity has left…But Not Yet! Before going any further I should say that yes, The Vatican Tapes is precisely one of these movies. The last time I caught one before this was last year’s Deliver Us from Evil, which came from Scott Derrickson. I didn’t care for that, but coincidentally Derrickson’s The Exorcism of Emily Rose was the last theatrical one I really enjoyed.

The Blair Witch Project celebrates its 15th anniversary in the UK today (October 22).
The frightening, low-budget, found-footage horror movie was written and directed by Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sanchez, and featured an unknown cast who used their own names in the film.
The Blair Witch Project 15 years on: The horror movie that changed everything
It became the first of its kind in Hollywood due to its commercial success and viral online campaign, which was created to make the production look like a real documentary. The Blair Witch website with details on the made-up mythology still exists.
And the clever campaign worked on some gullible and vulnerable viewers. We remember witnessing real tears of fear being shed by some audience members in the cinema (and definitely not ours...).
It purports to be a documentary shot by three inquisitive, daring, and at times daft students investigating the local Blair Witch legend in the Maryland forest.

Horror Channel have announced their latest rund of UK television premieres for October, including three outstanding supernatural thrillers: Under The Bed, Steven C. Millar’s nightmare of all nightmares, The Gathering, starring Christina Ricci, and the haunting Lovely Molly (my personal fave of the three), from Blair Witch co-director Eduardo Sánchez.
Friday 3rd - The Gathering
Directed by Brian Gilbert (Wilde), this supernatural thriller stars Christina Ricci as Cassie Grant, an American traveller who suffers amnesia when hit by a car. After accepting sanctuary from the family of the car that hit her, Cassie starts hallucinating that terrifying strangers are following her. Is it concussion or second sight? And what do her frightening visions have to do with an ancient church? A riveting performance by Ricci is supported by a stellar cast including Ioan Gruffud, Stephen Dillane and Kerry Fox.

Bobcat Goldthwait's Willow Creek was released not long ago, but should your appetite for found-footage Bigfoot movies not yet have been sated, here comes another one. Exists is the latest work of The Blair Witch Project's Eduardo Sanchez, and a new trailer has just arrived. Anyone who caught Exists at FrightFest over the weekend will notice that the first 30 seconds or so of that clip isn't actually in the finished film. So that's one for the next round of Trailer Cheats. But otherwise it's a decent primer for a film that starts off in pretty conventional cabin-in-the-woods territory but quickly gets far more intense and interesting."I’ve wanted to make a Bigfoot movie since I was a little kid," Sanchez told Empire just after the release of his excellent Lovely Molly. "I’ve always been curious about the way Bigfoot has kind of turned into a comic character now.

“The director of The Blair Witch Project takes you back to the woods” in the first trailer for Exists. Eduardo Sánchez returns to found footage, the genre that kicked off his career. The film follows five friends on an excursion in the woods, but their hopes of sex and drug filled vacation are dashed when they encounter a very unhappy sasquatch. Though not even the first found footage bigfoot movie this year, the film looks like it could be a fun ride. Sánchez’s last go-around with found footage was the A Ride in the Park segment in V/H/S/2, but this marks his first found footage feature since Blair Witch in 1999. Since his debut he’s directed several horror films including the atmospheric Lovely Molly in 2012. Check out the trailer for Exists below and see the film when it is released in theater and iTunes on October 24th.

Even though there were found footage features before it and one heck of a lot since 'The Blair Witch Project' will remain one of the most original horror movies to ever hit our screens. It has been 15 years since the release of the original from co-directors Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sanchez which was swiftly followed up the next year with off the wall meta-sequel 'Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2'. Of course a third installment has been rumoured ever since and during a recent Movies.com interview with Eduardo Sanchez, director of other horror projects such as 'Lovely Molly' and upcoming Bigfoot horror 'Exists', the filmmaker commented on the recent horde of found footage offerings and if we'll eventually see more from the Blair Witch! It claimed its cult-like status before it was released in theaters, and was the talk of the fest much like Reservoir Dogs and Clerks were before them. Found footage The Blair Witch Project not only redefined the genre, but it quickly became part of cinematic and festival history. And speaking of legends, Eduardo Sanchez decided to follow a mythic one for his latest endeavor. Following the trails of sasquatch (and influenced by 1972′s The Legend of Boggy Creek), this has zero to do with the touring monster truck of the same name. The filmmaker was recently back at the fest for his contribution to S-vhs (V/H/S 2) and recent promo art from the Afm means the shot in April Exists looks ready to go.
Gist: Scripted by Jamie Nash, this is about a group of friends who venture into the remote Texas woods for a party weekend find themselves stalked by Bigfoot.

This horror film fan knows director Eduardo Sanchez from this work on The Blair Witch Project (1999) and more recently on Lovely Molly (2011). Sanchez continues his horror streak with Exists. This title plays on a few horror tropes: several friends head off into the woods and find a monster. But, Sanchez is likely to work some surprises into this Bigfoot tale. And now, an early concept poster is available for Exists (left). Exists stars Dora Madison Bruge (Humans Versus Zombies), Brian Steele (Hellboy), Samuel Davis and Denise Williamson. A few of these actors will be pursued in the woods of Texas by an unnamed beast; but, there is a shocking truth behind this ancient myth. Exists is slated to show at the American Film Market in Santa Monica, California, beginning November 7th, 2013. This horror fan is expecting a trailer to be released for the film closer to this screening date. More...

New movie V/H/S 2 has its sights set on scaring the bejeezus out of you. So we asked the directors, including Britain's own Gareth Evans, to critique other masters of the form, like that ad where the kid forgets to put his seatbelt on
The Grim Reaper stalks the reservoirs of Britain, hoping to lure an errant child to his death. A northern lad rescues a football from an electricity pylon before meeting a crispy end. Two friends caper along a train line as the rails begin to hum. A schoolboy sits moodily behind his mother, not bothering with his seatbelt. Even the threat posed by freshly polished floors was deemed enough to warrant a scare-ad by the Central Office of Information, the arm of the Cabinet Office that, until its austerity-driven closure last year, spent hundreds of millions of taxpayers' pounds (including a budget of £531m in 2009/10) trying...

Of The Blair Witch Project's two directors, we've heard more in recent years from Eduardo Sanchez than we have from Daniel Myrick. Sanchez has popped up in the immediate past with Lovely Molly and a contribution to VHS2, and has Bigfoot horror Exists in post-production. For Myrick's last directorial project you have to cast your mind back to 2008's The Objective, but we shouldn't have too much longer to wait for his next film. He's entered into a deal with Radar Pictures to make the "creepy indie thriller" Under The Bed.Based on a true story, the film sees a stalker "taking up residence underneath the bed of his female target, subtly manipulating her life until ultimately revealing his presence". It sounds like the stuff of urban legend, but a quick search reveals something like this did actually happen in Washington DC in 2006. Parking valet Carlo Castellanos-Feria gained access to his victim's keys,...

Tiff’s Midnight Madness program turned 25 this year, and for two and half decades, the hardworking programers have gathered some of the strangest, most terrifying, wild, intriguing and downright entertaining films from around the world. From dark comedies to Japanese gore-fests and indie horror gems, the Midnight Madness program hasn’t lost its edge as one the leading showcases of genre cinema. In its 25-year history, Midnight Madness has introduced adventurous late-night moviegoers to such cult faves as Richard Linklater’s Dazed and Confused and Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs. But what separates Midnight Madness from, say, Montreal’s three and half week long genre festival Fantasia, is that Tiff selects only ten films to make the cut. In other words, these programmers don’t mess around. Last week I decided that I would post reviews of my personal favourite films that screened in past years. And just like the Tiff programmers,...

The movie-making business is a fickle one, with projects oftentimes appearing one day, then completely disappearing the next. There are so many factors that go into making a movie that it's quite frankly a miracle so many movies actually do end up getting made. But what about the ones that are planned and announced, but never actually materialize? There are a whole lot of them, and today we take a look at a handful of horror movie sequels that found themselves stuck in the dreaded Development Hell. Before the Mask: The Return of Leslie Vernon One of the most frustrating stories in recent years within the horror genre is the story of the sequel to 2006's utterly brilliant cult classic Behind The Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon... a follow-up that, for whatever reason, just can't seem to get off the ground. Described as a "spreemake," meaning a sequel, prequel...

The anthology horror movie V/H/S debuted at Sundance last year to brilliant early reviews, and almost a year later to the day, the anthology sequel, V/H/S/2, returned to Utah to equally promising praise.
The film has continued on the festival circuit in recent weeks, and with only a few more to go before its early VOD release, ahead of its theatrical rollout, Magnet have debuted the terrific and very red-band first trailer online.
Searching for a missing student, two private investigators break into his abandoned house and find another collection of mysterious VHS tapes. In viewing the horrific contents of each cassette, they realize there may be terrifying motives behind the student’s disappearance.

V/H/S 2
USA, 2013
Directed by Simon Barrett, Adam Wingard, Eduardo Sanchez, Gregg Hale, Timo Tjahjanto, Gareth Huw Evans, and Jason Eisener
The horror anthology V/H/S deserves credit for figuring out a good way to present mediocre found-footage ideas. When watching a bad found-footage horror film the main problem is that it goes on too long and can’t keep its gimmick fresh, but if many of those films were cut to short-film length, their shortcomings would be well camouflaged. So it goes with the sequel V/H/S 2: there are some good ideas, and some awful ones, and the best thing that can be said about the bad ideas is that they don’t hang around.
Like its predecessor, V/H/S 2 is shaped around a framing story. This time, the framing story involves two private investigators searching for a missing person. Turns out this particular...

Lovely Molly is a psychological horror full of shadows and noises and supposed supernatural activity and yet, it is quite the slow burning film, opting to inject some long, slow passages into this rather peculiar tale – and does it work?
Writer / Director Eduardo Sanchez is no stranger to psychological horror – his first foray into it was The Blair Witch Project – and here, he showcases some of the same ideas and ingenious tricks that made that film so effective and, in the end, haunting.
With Lovely Molly, he presents to us the set up of the story and then we’re pretty much on our own, as we watch Molly wander the house by herself, learning bits and pieces of the back-story of the plot in softly spoken scenes of dialogue that make no sense at the time they’re delivered.

While Sundance has certainly been kind and the filmmaker received much acclaim along the festival circuit for last year’s eerie Lovely Molly as well, the team aren’t so sure Exists is appropriate. “We don’t know if it’s really a festival film, really,” Hale says. “I love film festivals, and if it ended up as part of promoting the film that we ended up in a festival, that’d be great, but I kind of feel like let’s deal with a distributor first.
