The Zellner brothers’ anticipated alien invasion comedy Alpha Gang, starring and produced by Cate Blanchett, just got buzzier with the unveiling of her co-stars.
Dave Bautista, Steven Yeun, Zoë Kravitz, Léa Seydoux, Riley Keough, and Channing Tatum have been confirmed for the cast as the movie’s international sales agent mk2 films gears up to ramp up pre-sales at the AFM.
Alpha Gang centers on a group of alien invaders sent to conquer Earth. Disguised in human form as a 1950s leather-clad biker gang, dubbed the Alpha Gang. They are ruthless in their mission, until they succumb to the most toxic and contagious human condition of all: emotions. The movie follows the Zellner brothers’ Sundance hit Sasquatch Sunset.
“These stellar new recruits are a powerhouse of comedic talent, adding even more excitement to this eagerly awaited film. This cast, just like the story and its filmmakers, is out of this world.

Disney’s long-expected move to fold ABC Signature into 20th Television brings to an end the media conglom’s in-house TV studio, which started off as Touchstone Television a decade before Disney bought ABC, subsequently being renamed ABC Studios and more recently ABC Signature.
Launched in 1985, Touchstone TV’s first major hit was Golden Girls, which ran on NBC for seven seasons. Other successful series from that era include Blossom, also for NBC, and Home Improvement, Ellen and Boy Meets World for ABC.
In the first years after ABC became part of Disney, Touchstone Television continued to sell to all networks — which is how 20th Television operated for its entire run at Fox — with shows such as Felicity and Popular for the WB and The PJs for Fox/WB.
The studio gradually shifted its attention to its own network, supplying it with series such as Once And Again, My Wife And Kids,...

The title Murder in a Small Town is, at once, perfectly descriptive and not at all. On one hand, the new Fox procedural is exactly what it says on the tin. It is indeed about a homicide — or presumably homicides, plural, though I can’t say for certain since I was only sent the first episode in time to write this review. And it does in fact take place in a tiny village, specifically one called Gibsons, off the west coast of Canada.
On the other, it’s such a generic name that it conveys almost nothing. It offers no indication of what distinguishes this premise from the likes of, say, Hulu’s Under the Bridge or HBO’s True Detective or Peacock’s Poker Face, all of which are also about murders in small towns. Maybe that’s because, at least in the premiere, the show itself doesn’t seem totally sure.

The new season of Doctor Who has already cast plenty of new faces, from Varada Sethu to Nicola Coughlan — but these are both companions of Ncuti Gatwa's Fifteenth Doctor. The latest casting sees Under the Bridge and The Good Wife star Archie Panjabi enter the Whoniverse as a villain!
After a mixed debut season on Disney+, Doctor Who will return for its second season on the platform in 2025, although its future beyond that remains uncertain. Season 1 ranged from fantastic episodes, like 73 Yards and Boom, to more disappointing entries like Space Babies and The Devil's Chord. In terms of viewership, it wasn't a resounding success, but it exceeded in its target demographic. What's more, 2025 will also see an all-new spinoff premiere, titled The War Between the Land and the Sea.

Oprah Winfrey is on tear with the primetime specials.
Just a few days after airing her ABC exploration of artificial intelligence with leaders in the tech community, the media mogul has set her TV outing at CBS. An Oprah Special: The Presleys – Elvis, Lisa Marie And Riley is the result of Winfrey’s recent trip to Elvis Presley’s historic Graceland Mansion where she interviewed Presley’s granddaughter, Riley Keough.
Keough’s sit-down with the queen of sit-downs comes nearly two years after the unexpected death of her mother, Lisa Marie Presley at 54 years old. Prior to her death, the Elvis’ lone offspring recorded hours of stories from her unique life for a memoir. Working with those recordings, Keough co-penned the book From Here to the Great Unknown. It arrives Oct. 8, via Random House, the same day as Winfrey’s special.

The 76th Primetime Emmy Awards just aired on ABC, and things went about as expected. In other words, the excellent historical drama Shōgun won Best Drama Series; the caustic slice-of-life series The Bear won Best Comedy Series, since I guess it's a little more like a comedy than Shōgun; and the autobiographical stalker drama Baby Reindeer won Best Limited or Anthology Series.
Those three were the big winners of the night, with them each taking home four awards. Jeremy Allen White won Best Actor In A Comedy Series as expected, and his costar Ebon Moss-Bachrach won Best Supporting Actor. On the drama side, Hiroyuki Sanada won Best Actor and Anna Sawai won Best Actress; she was the one I was really invested in. She was magnificent as Mariko and if she hadn't won I would have been forced to write a strongly worded letter to whoever votes in these things.

Only eight months after the last Emmy ceremony (which was delayed due to the strikes), the Primetime Emmy Awards are back, although there were some big surprises in store. Everyone (myself included) expected The Bear to own every category it was nominated in. While it did well, winning many big categories including Best Actor in a Comedy Series, Supporting Actor and Supporting Actress, it lost Best Comedy Series (and actress) to Hacks.
Netflix’s controversial limited series Baby Reindeer also cleaned up, nabbing awards for star and creator Richard Gadd plus co-star Jessica Gunning. But, FX was the evening’s big winner, with their epic series, Shogun, dominating the drama categories, with the great Hiroyuki Sanada winning the prize for Best Actor, and Anna Sawai taking Best Actress, alongside the show’s Best Drama win. Jessica Gunning won her first Emmy on Sunday night for her breakout supporting turn in Baby Reindeer, Netflix’s buzzy limited series created by and starring Richard Gadd. The win is the first of the night for the show, which previously scored at the Creative Arts Emmys with statuettes recognizing its casting and editing.
Gunning saved the “biggest thanks” of her speech for Gadd, saying, “I’ve tried so many times to put into words what working on Baby Reindeer meant, and I fail every time — so I’m going to sing…” After breaking into her now-famous laugh, she continued, “No, imagine… I’ll keep it simple and just say thank you for trusting me to be your Martha. I will never, ever forget her, or you, or this. It really means a lot, so thank you, Reindeer, and thank you for this [award].”

Jessica Gunning has just won her first Emmy Award for her portrayal of Martha in Netflix’s “Baby Reindeer.” Gunning was nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series for her work, one of 11 total nominations for the show.
After its April premiere, “Baby Reindeer” became one of the buzziest shows of the summer, catapulted into the Netflix Top 10 and earning instant awards speculation for Gunning, creator and star Richard Gadd, and the series itself. The show received nominations at the 76th Annual Emmy Awards for its casting, costuming, directing, editing, and music supervision, as well as in the performance categories for Gunning, Gadd, Tom Goodman-Hill, and Nava Mau (in Gunning’s category). The Creative Arts Emmys earlier in September awarded casting directors Nina Gold and Martin Ware as well as editors Peter H. Oliver and Benjamin Gerstein.

The Creative Arts Emmys earlier in September awarded casting directors Nina Gold and Martin Ware as well as editors Peter H. Oliver and Benjamin Gerstein.

It’s television’s biggest night, and it’s posed to be a record-breaking one if contenders like “Shōgun” and “The Bear” continue expected sweeps.
The way of things was signaled at the 2024 Creative Arts Emmys September 7 and 8 when “Shōgun” broke records grabbing 14 trophies, sweeping every category except the main title theme and original score. “Shōgun” took casting, cinematography, period costumes, editing, period/fantasy production design, period/fantasy hairstyling, main title design, non-prosthetic period/fantasy/sci-fi makeup, prosthetic makeup, sound editing, sound mixing, special visual effects, and stunt performance, and broke a record previously held by “Game of Thrones.”
Tonight, the FX drama is nominated for Best Drama series, among a slew of acting nominations where it looks to continue its stunning run.
On the comedy side, defending champ “The Bear,” also FX, will take on the third season of Max’s “Hacks,” among other contenders like “Abbott Elementary,” and...

TV’s biggest night is back for a second time this year, with the 76th Annual Emmy Awards back to their regularly-scheduled September ceremony. The impact of 2023’s Hollywood strikes is still rippling through the industry — including through the 75th Emmys, which took place earlier this year, in January — but the 2023-2024 Emmy nominees delivered another excellent year of television.
Despite the back-to-back ceremonies, the Emmys eligibility period holds strong; this ceremony will honor TV shows that premiered between June 2023 and May 2024. That includes pre-strike premieres like “The Bear” Season 2 and spring 2024 hits like “Hacks” Season 3. This was the first year without a lot of usual suspects in the Emmy race, such as “Succession,” “Ted Lasso,” “Barry,” “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” other favorites like “The Gilded Age,” “The Bear,” “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” and “The Crown” are still in the running.

The name on everybody’s lips at this week’s Emmys is FX’s “Shōgun.”

Sanada, co-star Anna Sawai, and showrunners Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks were among the Emmy-nominated attendees at Gold House‘s inaugural One House Toast to the Emmys.
In partnership with Macro and Nissan, Gold House honored the 2024 multicultural nominees and achievements across filmmaking at the celebration on Thursday night at the Maybourne Hotel in Beverly Hills.

The worst part of watching a new binge-worthy series is figuring out what to watch next. Especially when there’s only one season.
Netflix’s addictive teen mystery series “A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder” debuted in the top ranks of the streaming charts in August and has held steady for weeks, but Netflix has yet to announce a second season. Which means a whole lot of folks have tuned in and might be looking for another great mystery series. Not to worry, we’ve got a curated list of shows like “A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder” to watch while you wait for that Season 2 renewal.
“Veronica Mars” (Warner Bros. Television) “Veronica Mars”
“Veronica Mars” is the undisputed Goat of teen detective shows. In her breakout role, Kristen Bell plays the title sleuth, daughter of former sheriff turned private investigator — and one of TV’s all-time great dads, Keith Mars (Enrico Colantoni). Witty,...

Ryan Murphy has become the go-to person for actors who want to win Emmy Awards. In fact, 13 different performers have won Emmys for appearing in a Murphy production since 2010, for roles that are both humorous and monstrous. Starting with “Glee,” more than 40 actors have been recognized with a nomination by the TV academy, mostly in the limited series/movie categories. It’s no surprise Murphy’s name is typically heard at least once or twice per Emmy broadcast, whether in speeches thanking him or for nominations of his own for directing, producing and writing.

However exciting it was for Lily Gladstone to receive her own first Emmy nomination for her work in the Hulu series “Under the Bridge,” the more meaningful aspect of her Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie nod was seeing “True Detective: Night Country” breakout Kali Reis be honored as well. “I love that I’m not alone in this category. Having just had a bunch of first time historical monikers applied to me, there’s something that’s very lonely about that,” the recent Oscar nominee told IndieWire over Zoom. “So it’s great to carry that with another actress who turned in just this stellar performance, and then just represents a whole other aspect of how diverse and how important it is to highlight how diverse Indian country is.”

[This story contains spoilers from True Detective: Night Country.]
Kali Reis and the rest of the Night Country brain trust faced a tall order as the new stewards of the True Detective franchise.
Reis, alongside showrunner Issa López and two-time Oscar-winning co-star Jodie Foster, opted to chart a new course for HBO’s well-regarded crime anthology in the wake of series creator Nic Pizzolatto’s departure after three seasons and five Emmys. On a personal level for Reis, the professional boxer turned actor still felt she had a lot to prove as a relative newcomer to the entertainment industry. Her Indie Spirit-nominated debut in 2021’s Catch the Fair One popped up on López’s radar during casting, leading to an audition that she willed into the role of Alaska State Trooper Evangeline Navarro.

Gravitas Ventures has acquired the U.S. and Canadian rights to Sheridan O’Donnell’s debut feature “Little Brother,” starring Daniel Diemer (“Under the Bridge”), Phillip Ettinger (“First Reformed”), Academy Award winner J.K. Simmons (“Whiplash”) and Polly Draper (“Thirtysomething”). The film is slated for a Sept. 2024 theatrical release.
“Little Brother” begins after Pete (Ettinger) attempts suicide, pushing his overbearing father Warren (Simmons) to recruit his little brother Jake (Diemer) to drive Pete from Albuquerque to Seattle for a family intervention. The brothers aren’t just oil and water; they’re fire and gasoline—and they’re both crammed inside a busted-up van for 1,400 miles with nowhere to hide. Since 2021, FX on Hulu’s “Reservation Dogs” has racked up an impressive list of accolades, from winning Peabody Awards to Independent Spirit Awards, but the comedy was largely overlooked by the Television Academy — until now. Nominated for five Emmy awards for its third and final season, including Outstanding Comedy Series, the endearing half-hour program centered on a group of indigenous teenagers on the outskirts of an Oklahoma reservation struggling to find their place after the death of their close friend.
As de facto group leader Bear Smallhill, breakout star D’Pharaoah Woon-a-Tai became the first indigenous actor to be nominated in the lead comedy acting category — a historic achievement that isn’t lost on him. “I’m very grateful for the recognition the show has gained throughout the years, but also recently through the Emmys,” said the 22-year-old Canadian actor, who is of Oji-Cree heritage. “I’m grateful that now...

What do Robert Downey Jr., Idris Elba, Lily Gladstone and Maya Rudolph have in common?
These four stars are not only nominees at this year’s Primetime Emmy Awards but are also the sole representatives of their respective series: Downey (supporting actor in a limited series for “The Sympathizer”), Elba (lead drama actor for “Hijack”), Gladstone (supporting actress in a limited series for “Under the Bridge”) and Rudolph (lead comedy actress for “Loot”). While each of these talented actors has a shot at winning, history shows that it’s rare for someone to take home an Emmy when their show has no other nominations.
Over the past four decades, only six actors have won an Emmy as the sole nominee from their show: Louie Anderson (supporting comedy actor for “Baskets” in 2016), Richard Kiley (lead drama actor for “A Year in the Life” in 1987), Regina King (lead actress limited for “Seven Seconds...

Women are falling out of focus on the small screen. According to a new report on gender and hiring in TV presented by IMDbPro and ReFrame — an initiative of Sundance Institute and Wif — women lost gains made over the past several years in nearly every position analyzed.
Last year’s data found that women (or gender-diverse performers) accounted for 54 percent of lead roles, while the new report details a decrease of 13 percent to 41 percent. Also released as part of the study, ReFrame and IMDbPro award a Stamp to recognize gender-balanced hiring on television shows, and this year 77 of the 200 most popular TV and streaming series of 2023-24 earned the distinction (or 38.5 percent). The total represents a dip of 8.5 percent from last year, or 20 percent from a peak in 2020-21.

It has been a minute since someone playing a clear cut antagonist has won the Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or a Movie. The last time was probably Patricia Arquette winning in 2019 for her portrayal of...

While some “House of the Dragon” fans live and die by the portmanteau known as Rhaenicent, Season 2 finale director Geeta Vasant Patel can’t think so obliquely. As the director responsible for Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) and Alicent’s (Olivia Cooke) only two scenes together all season, Patel told IndieWire that she did see it as “a relationship about love,” but never skewing too explicitly romantic or platonic.
“I always thought about the metaphor for it as two lovers that have been divorced and still love each other,” Patel told IndieWire after the finale. “Part of it is that they both want to be with each other in a way they can’t understand and can’t explain — it’s like first love.”
In Season 2, Episode 8, Alicent makes a final plea to Rhaenyra to stop the war — just as Rhaenyra asked her back in Episode 3. Patel said she and Director of...

There is no doubt that Lily Gladstone has had quite a year. From her Oscar nomination earlier this year to her stint with the Emmys, the actress has managed to build up a rare and interesting resume, one that even Emma Stone and Jennifer Lawrence have not been able to secure with their long and storied career.
Lily Gladstone in Killers of the Flower Moon / Paramount Pictures
While there are multiple actors who have secured an Emmy and Oscar nomination, it is rare that actors receive these two honors in the same year, which is the case for Lily Gladstone. She was the first Native American actress to be nominated for an Academy Award in the history of the Academy. Along with fellow Emmy nominee Kali Reiss, the actress was also one of the first Indigenous women to receive the honor.

It is a truth universally acknowledged (or should be) that not all hit TV is good TV. No one is more acquainted with this idea than the creative minds at Netflix, the people who brought you “gourmet cheeseburgers” like “Ginny & Georgia,” “Firefly Lane,” and “My Life with the Walter Boys.” Sometimes an audience craves arbitrary drama more than intellectual stimulation, and who am I to harsh that buzz?
