Sound the Fargo reunion klaxon! For The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Jesse Plemons – star of Breaking Bad, Bridge of Spies and Black Mass – will reteam with actor/director and real-life girlfriend Kirsten Dunst for The Bell Jar, a new spin on Sylvia Plath’s literary classic of ’63.
There, Plemons will join Dakota Fanning, who landed the lead role of Esther Greenwood during the summer months. Meanwhile, Lenny Shepherd is the name of Plemons’ character, and we understand that production is expected to kick into gear early next year.
Acting as the directorial debut of Kirsten Dunst, there are precious few story details available for this new interpretation of The Bell Jar. That being said, we’re inclined to believed Dunst will remain fairly faithful to Plath’s novel, as opposed to churning out a modern redo of Larry Peerce’s own film adaptation from 1979.

Girl Talk is a weekly look at women in film — past, present and future.
In the spring of 1999, Sofia Coppola’s feature directorial debut, a big screen version of Jeffrey Eugenides’ novel “The Virgin Suicides,” premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. A delicate, deeply feeling and achingly human portrait of suburban ennui and teenage depression, the film was anchored by a performance by a then-17-year-old Kirsten Dunst. As Lux Lisbon, the prettiest and wildest and most broken of the five Lisbon sisters that the film so intimately chronicles, Dunst was tasked with straddling the gap between deep pain and flickering hope.
The film follows the Lisbons after their youngest sister, Cecilia, twice attempts suicide, completing the act on her second try, all during party thrown by her terrified parents in hopes of cheering her up enough to keep her alive. The Lisbons, by and large, are suffocated by their...

Deadline brings word that Kirsten Dunst is set to make her first foray behind the camera with The Bell Jar, a new adaptation of Sylvia Plath’s semi-autobiographical novel of the same name that has already secured Dakota Fanning to headline.
Johnson, who has lined up roles in Brimstone and Ewan McGregor’s crime drama American Pastoral (which, incidentally, also marks McGregor’s directorial debut), will lead the feature film as Esther Greenwood. Nellie Kim, meanwhile, penned the script opposite Dunst.
For those unfamiliar with Plath’s source material, The Bell Jar is set against a post-war 1950s, where Greenwood secures an internship with a high-profile magazine in New York City. However, a crippling mental illness begins to take hold as Greenwood returns home to Boston.
This isn’t the first time that The Bell Jar has found its way onto the silver screen; in 1979, a movie adaptation placed Marilyn Hassett in the lead role,...

Kirsten Dunst is going to chase that (well-deserved) Emmy nomination high by tackling her first feature film in the director’s chair. The Fargo actress has a couple of shorts under her belt—Welcome and Bastard, which screened at Sundance and Cannes, respectively—but now Deadline reports that she’ll helm an adaptation of The Bell Jar. And with that, a collective, not-quite-contented sigh just went up across English literature classrooms everywhere, or at least the ones that are in summer session.
Dunst and co-writer Nellie Kim (no, not the Russian Olympic athlete, though that was our guess, too) have already adapted Sylvia Plath’s powerful novel into a script. Dunst has also landed Dakota Fanning in the lead role of Esther Greenwood, the novel’s protagonist who descends into madness following an internship in New York. Esther chafes at the idea of marriage, an aversion that helps get her...

Next month's "Sin City: A Dame to Kill For" is a long overdue sequel to 2005's stylistically groundbreaking comic book adaption "Sin City" (the comic book creator, Frank Miller, ended up co-directing the film with Robert Rodriguez, as he does again here). The first film was bold and provocative, plunging you neck-deep into the seedy world of cops, criminals, dangerous women, and straight-up psychopaths, but in a way that was dizzy and fun, rendered in starkly black-and-white comic book compositions. It was film noir writ large. And "Sin City: A Dame to Kill For" looks bigger, bloodier, and even more brutalizing, if this new clip is any indication.
The brief clip (running a little over a half-a-minute) is centered around Jessica Alba's character Nancy, who appeared in the first film both in flashback (when she was terrorized by a character called The Yellow Bastard) and in present day (where...

From the big screen to her big day, Natalie Portman has marked some important moments in her life wearing Rodarte. The dance costumes worn by the actress’ character in the psychological thriller Black Swan, the gown she wore to accept the Oscar for her performance in the same film and, reportedly, her 1950s-style tea-length wedding dress all bore the Rodarte label.

Jena Malone is one tough cookie and definitely not an actor to shy away from a challenging project.
She's just signed on for the lead role in "Lonely Hunter," the life story of Southern gothic author Carson McCullers. Deborah Kampmeier, who was last seen behind the lens of the controversial Dakota Fanning flick "Hounddog," will be directing. It's definitely a dicey move for Malone, but a welcome one.
Malone's no stranger to the rough-and-tumble Southern gothic genre; she made her debut in the intense adaptation of Dorothy Allison's "Bastard Out of Carolina." While "Bastard" takes place in a very different era than when McCullers was living, it's hard to imagine one existing without the other. After that, she stole Donnie Darko's heart (and ours) right before the world went kaplooey, and has gone on to rock indies like "Into the Wild" and blockbusters like "Sucker Punch" alike.

Heroes — it seems we need them now more than ever. Hollywood is aiming to give us a whole lot of “comic” relief over the next 24 months by releasing a spate of films based on characters that were first brought to life on the pages of comic books and graphic novels.
“The Green Hornet,” profiled by Moving Pictures in interviews with star Seth Rogen and director Michel Gondry, is but the first in a long line of comic-book titles coming to a theater near you. In 2011 alone, we can expect “Priest,” “Thor,” “Green Lantern,” “Captain America: The First Avenger” and “Cowboys & Aliens,” along with the continuing sagas of “Transformers,” “Men in Black” and “Sin City,” to name just a few.

Brian Geraghty, Josh Peck and Margarita Levieva have signed to star in "ATM," a thriller from the Safran Co. and Gold Circle Films. David Brooks is directing from a script by "Buried" scribe Chris Sparling.

A late-September start in Winnipeg, Manitoba, is being eyed.

Short films from actors (now we should add and) directors Kirsten Dunst and James Franco closed the Cannes’ Critics Week sidebar on May 20.
So, Kirsten Dunst is at Cannes with her second short film titled Bastard. We guess nobody is really surprised with this information, ’cause we all know she already has this kind of experience, and that’s exactly why we’re here today to share with you some details about Bastard.
The short tells the story of a young couple in crisis who finds their way to a desert motel where three odd men plan to meet them for questionable reasons.
Here’s what Dunst had to say about her project: “This film explores what makes the unbelievable believable. When we hear a story that seems mysterious or far-fetched, we put more trust in its accuracy the longer ago it took place.
As the centuries pass, the truth becomes more malleable.

Kirsten Dunst took a break from her succession of red carpet gowns at the Cannes Film Festival and put on a little black bikini on Saturday for a swim at the Eden-Roc pool. She was back in a long Chanel number later in the evening, though, when she joined other stars like Diane Kruger, Javier Bardem, and Penelope Cruz for the closing ceremony. Kirsten had some downtime between her fancy nights out, as she made the rounds promoting her directorial debut called Bastard.
