Freevee isn’t going away, Amazon says.
With Amazon’s Prime Video launch of ads by default last month, rumors and speculation have heated up that the tech giant would no longer have a strategic need for Freevee — its free, ad-supported streaming service that is separate from Prime Video. A Feb. 21 report by Adweek, citing anonymous sources, said that Amazon will “sunset” Freevee, likely in the second quarter and possibly before the NewFronts in late April.
Asked for comment, Amazon said the Adweek report is inaccurate.
“There are no changes to Freevee,” the rep said in an email to Variety. “Amazon Freevee remains an important streaming offering providing both Prime and non-Prime customers thousands of hit movies, shows, and originals, all for free.”

There’s change on the high seas of Banijay.
Christian Sarabia, President of 51 Minds Entertainment, the production company behind Bravo hit Below Deck, is stepping down from the Banijay Americas-owned business.
Julie Pizzi, President of fellow Banijay-backed firm Bunim/Murray, will add overseeing 51 Minds to her responsibilities running the Real World producer.
It is the latest change for the group; earlier this year, Cris Abrego, who founded 51 Minds, stepped down as CEO of Banijay Americas with Ben Samek taking over that role and Abrego remaining as Chairman. There’s been much speculation about Abrego’s own role in recent months.
Sarabia has been with 51 Minds for many years, having produced series such as The Surreal Life and Flavor of Love. He took the reins at the company in 2014 after Abrego became one of the top execs at the-then titled Endemol North America and the departure of co-founder Mark Cronin.

This year, the Best Competition Program Emmy category stands out from all others in that every nominee has previously conquered it (or the special class category from which it derived). Notably absent from the lineup is surprise 2022 victor “Lizzo’s Watch Out for the Big Grrrls,” which has yet to return for a second season after wrapping its first last March. This gives 2018-2021 winner “RuPaul’s Drag Race” a clear shot at redemption that is almost sure to pay off.
“Drag Race” is one of three series in this group that has already taken this prize at least four times, along with “The Amazing Race” and “The Voice.” Also in the mix are one-time winners “Top Chef” and “Survivor,” the latter of which has remarkably reached the end of a 16-year, 30-season snub streak.
In order to gauge the possibility of any show beating “Drag Race” here, let’s take a closer look at each nominee.

Exclusive: It’s a tough time to be a mid-sized unscripted production company right now.
A slow-down of greenlights amid cost cutting within all of the major media conglomerates, and seemingly no bump from the writers and actors strike despite what many were expecting, has led to doom and gloom across the non-scripted sector.
This has led to many companies having to undergo layoffs. Deadline understands that companies including Bunim/Murray, Half-Yard Productions and Propagate Content have all cut staff recently and more are expected to follow suit. ITV America-backed High Noon Entertainment informed its local production staff in Denver that due to production cycles, the number of workers contracted when shows weren’t in production would be reduced. We hear Hot Snakes Media is in a similar situation.
“It’s the toughest time to be in unscripted that I can remember,” one unscripted producer told Deadline.

Singer Lizzo has reportedly been removed as a contender for the Super Bowl Lviii Halftime Show amid her sexual harassment suit. The ‘About Damn Time’ star, 35, is being taken to court by three of her former backing dancers for alleged sexual harassment, creating a hostile work environment and discrimination, and an insider has now said her name has been ditched from a list of stars NFL bosses were considering for the February 2024 spectacle in Las Vegas, reports aceshowbiz.com.
“Talks of Lizzo being a part of the Halftime festivities, or performing the National Anthem, are dead now that she is surrounded by scandal,” a source told DailyMail.com.
The annual Super Bowl performances are produced by Jay-Z’s Roc Nation record label, and the 53-year-old rapper has cancelled his upcoming “Made in America” festival – which Lizzo was due to headline – after the singer was hit by her dancers’ allegations.
Another insider told DailyMail.

Although the Best Structured Reality Program Emmy has only gone to two series (“Shark Tank” and “Queer Eye”) since being introduced in 2014, the corresponding unstructured award has been won by six different shows in the same stretch of time. “Love on the Spectrum” took the 2022 prize but is out of the running this time, leaving 2021 winner “RuPaul’s Drag Race: Untucked” as the only show with a shot at pulling off the category’s first repeat victory in four years.
“Untucked” is one of three returning contenders in the current Best Unstructured Reality Program lineup, along with “Indian Matchmaking” and “Selling Sunset.” Both were bested by RuPaul’s series in 2021, while the latter also lost alongside it in 2022. Rounding out this bunch are “Vanderpump Rules,” which has finally broken through with Emmy voters after 10 seasons, and new show “Welcome to Wrexham,” which, according to Gold Derby’s odds, is heavily favored to win.

Pop star Lizzo is being sued by three of her former dancers over claims including sexual harassment and a hostile work environment. The lawsuit, filed, includes accusations of sexual, religious and racial harassment, discrimination, assault and false imprisonment, reports bbc.com.
Arianna Davis, Crystal Williams and Noelle Rodriguez are the former dancers bringing the lawsuit.
Lizzo and others who are accused have been approached for comment.
The lawsuit, filed in Los Angeles, includes allegations the dancers were “forced to endure sexually denigrating behaviour” and were “pressured into participating in disturbing sex shows” between 2021 and 2023.
Among the claims against Lizzo, whose real name is Melissa Viviane Jefferson, are that she “pressured Ms Davis to touch the breasts” of a performer in a nightclub in Amsterdam, and Ms Davis – after resisting – eventually acquiesced “fearing it may harm her future on the team” if she didn’t do so.

Some shows, like The Wheel of Time, will make their debut timed to drum up interest ahead of upcoming seasons on the subscription Prime Video, while other older shows will be more widely accessible on Freevee.
Many shows are available as of today, with The Summer I Tuned Pretty joining May 26, and other shows including The Wheel of Time and Reacher being added later in the year. The shows will remain ad-free on Prime Video.

Tom Cruise was honoured for his nearly three decades of work as a producer, and “ Everything Everywhere All at Once ” solidified its status as the frontrunner for the best picture Oscar by taking the top prize at Saturday night’s Producers Guild of America Awards.
“We love you! We love you!” another Oscar favorite and one of the film’s stars, Ke Huy Quan, shouted gleefully from the stage as Jonathan Wang and the other producers of the multiversal dramedy accepted the award for best theatrical motion picture.
The award has proven to be perhaps the best indicator for what will win the top honour at the Oscars, with four of the past five and 11 of the past 14 PGA winners going on to win best picture.

On Saturday, the Producers Guild of America gathered at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles to hand out the 2023 PGA Awards.
While the ceremony honors the achievements of producers across media, meaning awards were given out to series like “The White Lotus” and “The Bear,” the documentary “Navalny,” and animated feature “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio,” its theatrical film award, which was won by “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” is the one all eyes were on.
The Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures is often seen as a bellwether for the Best Picture Oscar, as 23 of the last 33 winners have gone on to win the Academy Award. In the room to accept were executive producers Jonathan Wang, Daniel Kwan, and Daniel Scheinert (the latter two also wrote and directed the hit multiversal dramedy from A24). “Everything Everywhere All at Once” has been named the best-produced film of 2022 at the Producers Guild Awards, which were held on Saturday evening in Los Angeles.
The freewheeling indie film won in a category that also included the formidable blockbusters “Top Gun: Maverick,” “Elvis” and “Avatar: The Way of Water.” The PGA had been a must-win awards show for “Top Gun,” and the fact that “Everything Everywhere” won is reminiscent of the low-budget “Coda” winning this award last year on its way to an unlikely Oscar Best Picture win.
The Producers Guild is also the only other awards show apart from the Oscars that uses the preferential or ranked-choice system of counting the votes in its top category. That system is designed to find a consensus choice, and the biggest question surrounding “Everything Everywhere All at Once” has been whether it was too polarizing to win under that system.

The 34th Producers Guild of America Awards took place on Saturday, February 25 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. The biggest award of the night, the Darryl F. Most of the 2022 Primetime Emmy wins were either generally expected or only slightly surprising, but almost no one anticipated the shocking Best Competition Program outcome. A whopping 91% of the thousands of Gold Derby users who made predictions for the race understandably thought “RuPaul’s Drag Race” would sail to its fifth consecutive victory, but the ones who ended up earning bragging rights were the 3% who correctly picked “Lizzo’s Watch Out for the Big Grrrls.” Five months later, RuPaul and his team are seeking their fifth PGA Award win for Best Reality Series, but they are once again faced with the challenge of having to fend off Lizzo’s squad.
These corresponding Emmy and PGA Award lineups are nearly identical, with the only difference being the exclusion of “Nailed It!” from the latter due in part to the producing guild’s set rule of five nominees per TV category. Even considering its Emmy loss,...

Under Latasha Gillespie, Executive Head of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at Amazon Studios, Amazon rolled out its new inclusion playbook in June of 2021.
Since then, the streamer launched its biggest, most expensive series, “Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power,” which was met with great acclaim and, sadly, with social media furor over the epic fantasy series’ diverse casting. And body-positive reality show “Lizzo’s Watch Out for the Big Grrrls,” was nominated for six Emmys, winning three, including one for Outstanding Competition Program and one for director Nneka Onuorah.
Gillespie recently spoke to TheWrap about how she and her team, and various creatives like Viola Davis and “One Day at a Time” co-creator Gloria Calderón Kellett, came up with the playbook, how’s it’s been implemented, and how embracing diversity in front of and behind the camera benefits Amazon’s bottom line, even if a certain segment of...

All reality television competitions run on drama. That’s what casting directors look for in participants; a show of calm, broad-minded, flexible folks certainly wouldn’t be compelling for audiences (and the ratings would be snoozy as well).
But recent headlines suggest a change may need to happen. While these reality TV competitions are entertaining and contribute to enormous viewership, a number of contestants push the envelope excessively — backstabbing, gossiping, and revealing outrageous behavior. The latest example was Sunday night, on the history-making live finale of CBS’ “Big Brother,” when fan favorite Taylor Hale overcame numerous adversities to become the first Black female to ever win a non-celebrity version of the game, taking home 750,000.
In a house with several other contestants who severely bullied her, Hale, a former pageant queen, was made fun of and unfairly ostracized for weeks, becoming the underdog for viewers to root for. Outraged and very vocal on social media,...

Attendees of the 2022 Emmy Awards came away from the show with a new understanding of the supernova that is Lizzo.
The multi-faceted artist, who ended the night as an Emmy winner for her Amazon Prime Video reality series “Lizzo’s Watch Out for the Big Grrrls,” cut quite a figure through the Microsoft Theater. Her fire-engine red tulle dress ran the length of a city block, extending out in all directions with the help of many hoops. During commercial breaks, photographers and Emmy-goers crowded around Lizzo‘s table to snap pics at such a furious pace that it looked like a strobe light to those who weren’t on the floor as part of the unusual ballroom-style seating for nominees and their entourages.
Moreover, Lizzo brought the party up the Loge level where a cheering section of “Big Grrrls” performers and producers kept spirits lively by chanting lyrics to her hit “About Damn Time.

The 74th annual Emmy Awards turned out to be a night of few surprises, with wins playing out largely according to predictions — including TheWrap’s own Steve Pond, who guessed last week that there would be no sweeps as the top shows — “Succession,” “Ted Lasso,” “Squid Game” and “Abbott Elementary” — all duked it out for dominance.
In the end, it was HBO’s limited series “The White Lotus” that took home the most trophies, five, with three wins going to writer-director-executive-producer Mike White.
“Ted Lasso” won four Emmys, repeating its 2021 triumph in supporting actor (Brett Goldstein), lead actor (Jason Sudeikis) and comedy series — and adding directing for a comedy series (M.J. Delaney). “Succession” took home three statuettes, including Outstanding Drama Series, which it last won in 2020.

Lizzo Cries While Accepting First Emmy: ‘All I Wanted To See Was Someone Fat Like Me, Black Like Me’
Lizzo is now officially halfway to being an Egot winner after accepting the Emmy Award for Outstanding Competition Program. After just one season of her new show, “Lizzo’s Watch Out for the Big Grrrls”, the singer-songwriter has added an impressive accolade to her list.
Appearing to be overwhelmed with emotion when her name was announced, Lizzo took the stage and immediately called for her “Big Grrrls” to join her in accepting the award.
“I need my big girls to come to the stage right now, right now! I want to say thank you to the Emmys and the Emmy voters,” Lizzo began. “First of all, I’m very emotional. And the trophy is nice, but my emotion is for these people who are on the stage with me.”
Lizzo went on to address the fact that full-figured women are not rare, their stories are just rarely told in mainstream media.

“I need my big girls to come to the stage right now, right now! I want to say thank you to the Emmys and the Emmy voters,” Lizzo began. “First of all, I’m very emotional. And the trophy is nice, but my emotion is for these people who are on the stage with me.”

What is there to say about the 74th Primetime Emmy Awards that hasn’t already occurred to everyone who watched it?
The show — at least on television, where I watched it this year because it was scheduled directly opposite the Toronto International Film Festival — was awful, with an ineffective host (ironically) in beloved Saturday Night Live veteran Kenan Thompson, an intrusive announcer who was allowed more time for inane commentary than winners were for acceptance speeches, strange presenter inclusions and omissions (Sydney Sweeney was in the room, folks!), poor pacing, bad lighting, slow cuts and the list goes on. (For a more thorough dissection of the telecast, read THR chief TV critic Daniel Fienberg’s review.)
The winners, meanwhile, did not include some of TV’s most popular shows, such as Paramount Network’s Yellowstone and NBC’s This Is Us, because they weren’t even nominated,...

Emmy producers told “The Hollywood Reporter” that they were going for a ceremony that wouldn’t be “mean,” that wouldn’t have a host doing “a hatchet job” on members of the industry. While host Kenan Thompson fulfilled that goal, it didn’t make for a more interesting show. Instead what we got was a ceremony that was light on laughs and devoid of any kind of structure or sense. Despite being occasionally punctuated by moments of joy and triumph, this year’s Emmy show was like a ship lost in a fog of bad ideas.
Confusion dominated the evening, beginning with the ceremony’s opening production number, a series of modern dances set to remixes of classic TV theme songs, which seemed more appropriate for “America’s Got Talent” than for a ceremony honoring the finest work in television. This was followed by a series of platitudes about hard work and perseverance from Oprah Winfrey,...

Good
Sheryl Lee Ralph took everyone to church with her truly epic, truly moving speech. Not only did she share wise words about believing in yourself, but she also busted out the voice that first made her a star in “Dreamgirls,” and belted to the rafters. It was so satisfying to see this acting veteran receive her due. Instantly one of the greatest Emmy speeches of all time – Sam Eckmann

It feels like one can simply copy and paste the same story every year. “This year’s Emmys ceremony had some wins, but ultimately still reminds us that little has changed when it comes to championing diverse talent.” The deck was already stacked against the Television Academy the minute the overwhelmingly white nominations were announced.
Some categories, like Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or Best Actor in a Drama, even had multiple nominees from the same show; four of the seven slots in the former category were taken up by actresses from “The White Lotus.” It was proof of a core problem when it comes to issues of nominee diversity: Not only were the voters not looking at different actors for nominations, they also weren’t watching nearly as much television to begin with, preferring instead to stick with a few popular shows as opposed to spreading the love.

Early in the 74th Primetime Emmy Awards on Monday night, host Kenan Thompson mentioned that the Emmys honored the hundreds of shows on television over the past year – “and we give awards to about five of them.”
In the last couple of years, that pointed joke about Emmy voters’ propensity to throw lots of trophies at only a few shows would have been dead-on. Last year, after all, saw the first-ever sweep in the drama categories, when “The Crown” won all seven of the awards handed out on the primetime show; the year before, “Schitt’s Creek” swept all seven comedy categories, the first show to achieve that feat in any genre.
But within the first hour of Monday’s Emmys, the show had blown past Thompson’s prediction and already given awards to eight different shows. The first two comedy awards went to “Abbott Elementary” and “Ted Lasso,” the drama awards to “Ozark” and “Succession,...

Comedy Supporting Actress: Sheryl Lee Ralph, “Abbott Elementary”
Ralph gave a legendary speech worthy of someone who was getting her first major accolade in her five-decade long career. She was so shocked that it took her a bit to actually get up and get on stage. As she looked out at the audience in the Microsoft Theater, she absorbed...

Singer “Lizzo’s Watch Out For The Big Grrrls” won the competition series Emmy for Competition Program category at the 74th Television Academy Awards, hosted by Kenan Thompson. The series sees the singer audition a group of women for the chance to be a Big Grrrl — one of the plus-sized backup dancers who perform with her on tour, reports ‘Variety’.
Accepting the award in tears, Lizzo cried out for the Big Grrrls to join her onstage: “The trophy is nice, but my emotion is for these people who are on the stage with me. The stories that they shared, they’re not that unique. They just don’t get told. Let’s just tell more stories.”
“When I was a little girl, all I wanted to see was me in the media,” she said.
“Someone fat like me. Black like me. Beautiful like me. If I could go back and tell little Lizzo something,...

Lizzo is now an Emmy winner! After taking home two awards at the Creative Arts Emmys on Sept. 3, the 34-year-old singer's Amazon Prime show "Lizzo's Watch Out For the Big Grrrls" snagged the trophy for outstanding competition program at the 2022 Emmys on Sept. 12.
"When I was a little girl, all I wanted to see was me in the media. Someone fat like me, Black like me, beautiful like me," an emotional Lizzo began her acceptance speech. "If I can go back and tell little Lizzo something, I'd be like, 'You going to see that person, but b*tch, it's gonna have to be you.'"
She continued, "One year ago, these women were filming this television show that would change their lives forever. They're Emmy-award-winning superstars who are going on a world tour."
Lizzo is officially halfway to Egot status. In addition to her three Emmys, Lizzo is also a three-time Grammy winner.
