Rebuttal to "leplatypus" review of Saving Grace
barlowralph16 July 2014
Warning: Spoilers
I find it hard to believe that "leplatypus" didn't understand this series, and wrote such a ridiculous review. Obviously the major reason that he missed the mark on his review is that he skipped most of the episodes. I have just finished watching all 46 episodes, so I think I have a better perspective to review the series.

Far from being "crap," Saving Grace is a raw, gritty, no-holds-barred character study of a woman plagued by demons, mostly of her own making. She loves and cares deeply for her family, especially her nephew, and is committed to her work, but at the same time is constantly at odds with the tragedies she has faced.

"Leplatypus" complains that the religious storyline is badly conceived, and whines about the depiction of the angel. If Earl had been a holier-than-thou angel, Grace would never have paid him any mind. Don't you see that all of this is to show that God always sends unexpected messengers, does things in ways we humans would never dream of? He also complains about the character of Grace being such a loose woman, but that's the whole point of this story, as I said before, it's a raw character study of a realistic, flawed person. If they made Grace look and act like Kim Delaney in NYPD Blue, it would have just been another NYPD Blue! In the last episode, Grace returns from a sort of pilgrimage with a renewed sense of purpose — and culminates with a selfless sacrifice in an effort to kill the evil influences, not only in her own life, but in life in general.

No, this show is NOT a big void — it's graphic, yes, but it's a realistic look at a deeply troubled but courageous woman. Five stars! Unless all you can see and hear are the nudity and the swear words, watch this show! It's on NETFLIX.

Revisited after 12 years

Warning: Spoilers
I remembered this show being so good when it originally aired and now that I'm older I feel like the character development was so amazing. The comraderie and friendship was well depicted. Grace's love for animals, kids, and her family and friends was so genuine and heartwarming despite the chaos in her life.

All I can say is this series finale broke me watching this 12 years later. All I could think was "what about gussy?".

I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the shape Holly Hunter was in during this series. She had just had twins the year before the series first aired. Some scenes may be too racey or explicit for some folks but it suits the character.
