Princess Cara
tenshi_ippikiookami24 September 2016
Kahlan gets kidnapped by The Margrave, a selfish king who has gotten an agreement with Nicci and the rest of the sisters of the dark: he will give them Kahlan in exchange for immortality. Richard, Cara and Zedd will try to sneak into the castle's dungeons to safe Kahlan.

Another episode of the "Legend of the Seeker", another very funny episode. In this one we have more humor than in other episodes, with lots of action, and some original moments. With Kahlan in the dungeons, it is time for Cara to shine, and Tabrett Bethell does a great job with the character, having to play a princess in order to fool the king and be able to free Kahlan. That in the castle magic can't be used (a cheap trick by the show) is a perfect excuse for things happening in a different way than in normal episodes, the characters having to use more "their brains" and less their magical abilities.

All in all, one funny episode in the middle of the darkness brought by the Keeper.

Wonderfully placed intermezzo
fathskie20 July 2012
Second season started with a BANG, and felt dark in overall - much, much darker than the 1st Season. The "darkness" atmosphere continued non-stop right up to episode 10, it's almost tiring to watch (even more when you see it on DVD in a marathon like me). Last episode "Torn" was somewhat 'light' and thought provoking, a nice change of pace. But "Princess" was truly felt as a breathe of fresh air after a continuity of a tiring, non-stop full action. It was a much needed intermezzo! Cara has been my favorite character and in this episode she stole the screen away from both Richard and Zedd with her mighty interpretation of a 'Mord-Sith going Princess' style.

This episode serves no purpose at all to the overall plot, but this was by far the most entertaining episode out of all the 2nd Season. Zedd's creepiness had increased tenfold, Richard's cuteness was up twice, and Cara's level of awesomeness was just... well, the same, really. Because she's always awesome in every episode.

Believe me, I lol'd more in this episode than all the first season combined.

good clean fun & some feminism too! written during Purim?

Warning: Spoilers
Cara's thinly veiled princess is funny, primarily because she pulls it off while barely deviating from her Mord-Sith persona, but wearing a fancy dress. It's like a man singing Jonny Cash in drag, with a dress and a wig, beard showing and no make-up, stockings or bust-stuffing. Or the expression 'you can take the trash out of the trailer, but you can't take the...' Truly bringing on the laughs are Zedd's and Richard's roles, both of whom receive unwanted romantic attention of the most hilarious kind. So wonderful indeed that it feels almost tragic when the King's guards burst in and 'rescue' Richard from the scene stealing King's sister.

The actor playing the King is suitably self-deprecatory, truly mocking this clownish fop, rather than sternly playing his "Ahasuerus" role. His "Vashti" awaits execution while he holds a beauty contest to replace her. "Esther" of course is of the enemy 'Seeker' tribe, yet we know through her powers of persuasion alone will justice prevail. With everyone in full costume, the Purim plot is more thinly veiled than the Princess/Mord-Sith's cleavage. The only surprise came at the end when 75,000 Persians were not killed in revenge.

The danger never feels too close-at-hand, except for the moments when Kahlan is flying high - an intentionally comical episode, just for fun! Further, Kahlan's feminist-proselytizing of the "Queen" was a nice balance to the chauvinist law of the land and its ruler. However, I'm rating the episode only at a 6, due to the obnoxious incessant rhymes that did not work at all as a plot device. Too contrived, as was the bit with bringing an old villain back to life. This was a clear-cut continuity error, letting her have all her old powers. As they said with Richard, when he was captured by Denna and possessed by Griggs, his Han remained with his body and not his spirit; thus, Nicci's powers could not have transferred to the new body.
