Everyone here sounds suprised...
bnevs1811 February 2022
Warning: Spoilers
...if you havent figured out by now that Disco wont give you a quick resolution and unbelievable action, seriously, what have you been watching? A good portion of the reviews here are either by people who arent fans but merely trashing it, or people who have the shortest memory ever.

The new 'prolific reviewer' feature is almost the exact opposite of what imdb should be doing...those who talk the most often have the least to say. Also, people who give over half of their ratings a 1 or 10 should be discounted... Now, as for the episode, there are good points sprinkled amongst the silly arguments made here. This isnt ESPN at 2:30 in the morning, and sports/gambling are entertaining only because they are unscripted. That whole scene could have been cut in half.

Disco often brings up a great plot point but ignores it. They had a freaking Changeling in this episode...now THATS a B story! Not some silly poker...And this episode still plays into the worst part of Disco with Burnham being a Mary Sue...even when she loses she wins. Can we one time see Michael screw up totally and someone else comes through with a great move?

So, yeah, this movie wasnt good, and was put in the wrong place as a half-premiere should be more important, but it wasnt a 1...a 1 is among the bottom 10% of all programming, and its not.

A Senior Trekker writes..................
celineduchain10 February 2022
Warning: Spoilers
GATHER ROUND, CHILDREN, and join me in my quest to make it to the end of STD undefeated.

With its renewal for a fifth season, the producers of this show have made it plain to us that, no matter how low audiences score it, they are determined to keep on making it. That being the case, it seems to me that the only reasonable way to proceed is to chase it even further downhill until it falls below absolute zero and into the "SO BAD, IT'S GOOD" category. How are we going to achieve this? Well, by not being manoeuvred into the position of "the enemy" or behaving like a "hater" for a start.

That said, let's get on to seeing what this week's episode has in store for us, shall we?

It starts off by reassuring us that not much has changed and that when Michael Burnham gets around authority figures she is going to sulk and pout as much as ever while she is still not above leaving her command to go off and have adventures in pursuit of some Galaxy-saving device or other. The chaps on Discovery are having a disagreement about who should be doing the domestic chores but then, suddenly, everything changes direction and we find ourselves spending the remainder of the episode in a Star Wars style Cantina.

The bar room cliches flow faster than Romulan ale, the dialogue is more loaded than a set of Ferengi dice and the décor has apparently been raided from some bankrupt Hippy commune. Owo goes two rounds down in the boxing ring with an opponent twice her size, only to come up swinging and win some hard cash so that Burnham can enter a high-stakes poker game against her boyfriend-turned-adversary, Book. The two of them partake in an overacting face-off of Razzie-winning dimensions and then reluctantly part ways, no doubt to meet up again before very long.

To finish up, the Mushroom Scientist aboard Enterprise has discovered something so absolutely stunningly, scientifically awesome that it has to be described as a....................blob.

IS STAR TREK DISCOVER GOING TO ACHEIVE ITS MATHEMATICS-BENDING OBJECTIVE OF BECOMING THE FIRST SHOW TO EVER ACHEIVE A NEGATIVE SCORE ON IMDB? LOOKS PROMISING!

Space poker? Really?
rrtiverton11 February 2022
Warning: Spoilers
So... when they found Book, they couldn't just plant a transporter tag on them and beam them into the brig? They had to... play poker? Really?

This season started off great, but this episode was... not well thought out.

Casino in Star Trek?
onyxlee18 February 2022
Despite the low rating of the recent episodes, I still love this show so much. But after so many great episodes that built the tension when facing such a big suspension of the new unprecedentedly advanced civilization, why all the sudden take a vacation to gamble? This episode is so uninspiring and slow. Sigh...

Why...
asterblasterth10 February 2022
....is there a need for an admiral, a president and a scientist? I mean when you have a Burnham. You need to negotiate peace in the universe? You get Michael. You need to outsmart a poker player? You get Michael. You need to figure out what the energy source is of a very advanced species? You need Michael because what scientist couldn't figure out or didn't think of in the months they've been working on it she figures it out in seconds.

Aaaah to be Burnham....

But I am glad the show is back. I was experiencing cringe withdrawal symptoms. But luckily I got my shot of cringe just in time...

I'm a fan of discovery but dull
SpiralScratch10 February 2022
I'm not hating on Discovery as I've loved it it but what has happened. S4 been so dull. Though after the break the second half of the season would start with a bang. Boy was I wrong. Wishful thinking.. Its almost like the creators are trying to kill it. A lot of fans I know have given up. I'm debating wether to after this.

Great episode
fhazduzj11 February 2022
This show gets a lot of criticism. Some of it is valid, but a lot of it is just nonsense. Personally I like this season a lot and this episode was great. Lots of good character development especially from cmdr. Owosekun who I think really shined in this episode but also from admiral Vance and Tarka. I'm definitely looking forward to more.

I Really Try To Like This Show
gbarrett-3994111 February 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I feel that the writers are punk'in us. Burnham is the best at everything she does and I mean everything. She can even out science her science crew. Her one weakness is poker, there she is only better than most people, except Book. This is the first ST series where the crew is never really seen unless the plot calls for them to be the best at something. I don't really need to watch...as I know Burnham will always save the day. Wacky.

Great Episode in Unexpected Season
iffilayo-1288810 February 2022
"Oh, wow!" Indeed.

Thoroughly unique episode that establishes what zero compromise looks like, its consequences personally and professionally, in the face of challenges to one's ideals.

Discovery continues to impress me. It's Star Trek done with passion, turning the old and tried (sometimes tired troupes) into something new and engaging.

Skip it and watch the final few minutes
stjhagens10 February 2022
Warning: Spoilers
What is there to say about this episode? It felt redundant, empty and was full of eye rolling moments.

I don't mind bottle episodes but the old ST series mixed it up with some humour, some nice twists and a satisfying ending with a clear message. There is barely any of that here. I don't know what the purpose of this episode was, save for a chance in the spotlight for Owo. And even that moment didn't give us any further character development for her.

Of course Burnham the Great, the Whisperer of Words and the Breaker of Tears, is the hero of the day yet again. I kinda liked the evil syndicate vibe but it didn't add much to the story.

We got to spend only a few minutes on board Discovery for a scene with Stamets and Culber but that scene felt very much out of place in this episode. The rest of the crew was absent yet again so the episode feit small because of it.

The stakes were never any high during this entire episode and the conclusion was predictable and unfulfilling. I would recommend fast forwarding the episode until the final moments when we get another snippet about the DMA and species 10C. The rest of the episode is hardly memorable and just barely entertaining enough to hold your attention.

After a few weeks with some very strong ST Prodigy episodes this felt like going back to a boring school after the best summer holiday ever. I know that there are people who are enjoying this show now more than ever but seeing average scores for S4 being around 20% on the 3 big review platforms, those people are vastly outnumbered.

This show lost me around the middle of S3 and it hasn't won me back since. It just isn't very strong on great, creative storytelling. If you're just going to focus on one big mystery, which you want to drag out over an entire season, you'll need to come up with great additional stories for each episode. This show doesn't do that and has chosen to emphasise everyone's emotions and feelings and it feels so empty because of it. The ST universe feels so small and the cast feels small too, focusing mostly on Burnham, which for me has become a totally unlikeable character.

By the way: why throw in a changeling only to have it captured very easily and never to speak of it again??? What was his deal, what was he doing there? How are the Founders and the Dominion doing these days? If you want to include big stuff like this, you have to flesh it out and not have us just hanging there.

What happened to this show?
shh22-655-22485611 February 2022
I hope whom ever is running this show from behind the scenes is not in control for the next season. Every episode used to be like a mini move. I was blown away but now it's a train wreck.

Just When You Thought it Could Not Get Worse
djblank-1204210 February 2022
A terrible re-hash/cobbling together of old Star Trek and other sci-fi TV/movie plots. The bar/casino from Star Wars and Blakes 7, poker - a continuing and annoying device in Star Trek The next Generation, Starfleet vs alien species in a cage/ring - many times with Kirk and Seven of Nine wrestling a Hirogen. Plus, more urgent whispering and ridiculous situations. The character of the President is so lame. Boring stories aside, what this series lacks is:

1. A true villain/villains

2. Sexual tension

3. A bad-ass captain (like Kirk, Picard or Janeway) with real charisma and a sense of humor -not a sanctimonious drip like Burnam.

4. A REAL first officer - not the boyfriend of the drippy captain.

5. A true sense of adventure and discovery.

Now at the point of insulting.
bitfly11 February 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Michael is out to stop 2 people from destroying a species and possibly starting a war that will end everything. She has a million different opportunities and simple ways to stop/kill/capture them, but instead she chooses to bet on boxing matches, play poker and make jokes . This show was awesome until season 4 now it's so dull and woke. Please get new writers for season 5.

Stop...the...whispering! I'll put up with the inconsistencies going on in the series...but can't stand all of Michael's whispering. Why can't she speak with a normal voice???

They really are stretching out this plot into total boredom
sumtim3s00n10 February 2022
Good talented writers make every episode interesting and exciting, bad ones keep pounding on the same idea over and over again with numerous buffer/filler episodes, in this case, generic bland and predictable ones.

This season is absolutely horrible and uttery dull. I hope it does not get even worse though can it even?

Very boring.
treatchristian11 February 2022
I completely zoned out after about 10 minutes or so. Normally I'm pretty involved with TV shows I'm watching but this was just absolutely boring and atrocious and I do not wanna spend any more time on it. If next weeks episode isn't any better I think I'm probably done with this series to be honest.

Waiting......
micjammusic11 February 2022
For the action to begin... So Paramount first takes Discovery from Netflix on the eve of its return, placing it on their own streaming service, placating us by allowing us to view it for free.

Up to now, I've been waiting for the action to start. I can't remember ever watching an episode of any of franchise series going by without some kind of action. Discovery, or should I say the writers of Discovery, seem to be content with writing one boring episode after another.

I used to be one of the champions of this series, but slowly the writers are changing my mind.

I will continue watching, if for anything else, to see where all this boredom is leading.

Let's all talk about our feelings
christopher-m-collins25 February 2022
Nothing interesting happens. Everyone shares lots of feelings. The doctor who is now also the psychologist shows that is is unqualified by breaking down over things his patients do. The whole show unfortunately continues to lose the plot. There is no core topic of the episode, and I can't muster any feeling for the characters or excitement for the story arc. No action at all. Such a disappointment. It's as if all the writing staff were depressed due to Covid and it came out in the scripts.

garabedian12311 February 2022
We seriously got scammed. We waited a month for...this? This filler pos episode. Like lets go do that super interesting thing we talked about...No lets go bs about our past and play poker (that you cant see or understand).

Seriously they show texas holdem poker being played but i cant tell whats going on, who is winning because the cards are meaningless to me and the camera work is weird. I fell asleep.

Star Trek: Poker
goggolya10 February 2022
Warning: Spoilers
After the mid season break Star Trek is back with.... Poker? Yeah, that's a really interesting topic to cover in a sci-fi for half an hour.... Great job Discovery, you never fail to fail!

Culber, the ship's therapist is in need of therapy... Who would have guessed he would burn out by the end of four seasons of Whiners in Space!

At the casino, why was the changeling gambling? They don't have any need for human commodities or money or fun. There's no logic in putting him there. Just that the writers wanted to make cameos and name drops for the fans. But zero logic or explanation or anything as usual...

Owo was standing next to Tarka for an hour. She could have assassinated him in a hundred different ways, instead she didn't do anything. She chose to let the guy go that has the potential to start a war with an advanced species, who could wipe the floor with the whole galaxy with just their mining equipment!

Instead of stopping our mad scientist, Michael's plan was to put a tracker (which has a limited range only) on a ship that has unlimited jump capabilities with its spore drive. As Tony Stark would say: Not a great plan.

Instead of trying to talk Book out of his mission, which failed of course for our brilliant diplomat... It would have been a better option of sabotaging their spaceship. They would be stranded without it, problem solved! Book was surprised to see Michael in the casino, so he wasn't expecting to be caught up to, and he sure didn't change the passwords for his ship! Michael could simply steal it because she has access to it.

There were so many different ways to go about this episode, and the writers chose to go with the most boring one possible: a game of cards...

In the end, weakest episode of the season so far. Boring, slow, didn't anything really happen in it. You could totally skip this episode and wouldn't impact the story in any way.

poor poor episode
russell_anam1 March 2022
This is probably the worst after hiatus episode in all star trek history. The show ended quite with a bang in the last episode and I was looking forward to the exciting continuation after hiatus. But they gave a horrible, boring, illogical and plain stupid episode. Everything about this episode makes not sense. These are rational behaviour of people when fate of the galaxy hangs on balance?

Showrunners Are Not Even Trying
mrreactionary11 February 2022
Another episode, another dull affair. It is evident that the cast and showrunners have just given up and are working through the end of their contracts. You can tell that by this point the entire production team know the show has been cancelled and rather than go out with a bang, they decided to give terrible performances and drag the series as far down as possible. Paramount an CBS once again need to fire the entire production team and bring in those who actually like Star Trek. Perhaps then we will get something that doesn't bore the audience to tears.

Acting: 3/10 Production: 1/10 Effect: 1/10 Writing: 1/10.

Best of a Bad Season
EntropyFashion10 February 2022
Here we finally have an almost ST worthy episode. Granted, I'm only referring to the last five minutes of the episode. The rest is the usual blend of bad writing, bad acting and whispering. Plus another attempt to rewrite the laws of physics where small women beat large males with barely an inconvenience. Anyone who ever actually fought or boxed anyone will know exactly what I mean.
