They found themselves by finding each other
tristan_196 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The conclusion of Lost transcends television. It is tear-jerking, poignant and moving. Something to witness for the first time only once in a life, but it won't ever leave you. The acting is fantastic and the characters are iconic.

I don't know if a lot of people will see this review, as I am writing it in 2021, and the show is over since 2010. Yet, there are still a lot of people discovering this show and experiencing it for the first time. Now, if you are under the impression that our folks were dead the whole time, you are misconceiving. Everything that happened on the island was real and felt by our characters. Only the flash-sideways that started in the Season Premiere (LA X, Part 1) constitute the purgatory time.

On the island, the survivors and the Man in Black come to a head. The plot comes to a close, and it is truly unique, exciting and interesting. The urgency is felt all around. The afterlife segment is even better. It is the small moments like Sayid reuniting with Shannon, or Ben staying outside the church and contemplating his mistakes that make the episode truly memorable, elevating an already awesome finale to the statute of greatness.

Our heroes found each other. Broken and lost, they can finally move on. Kudos to Damon Lindelof and everybody involved for making the ending they wanted and sticking to their guns.

SEE YOU IN ANOTHER LIFE BROTHA'

Great finale
alshaherahmad19 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
One of the best finales along with breaking bad and dark. The last episode was full of emotions. It was really hard to say goodbye to all the characters I really liked the fight between jack and the man in black and the fact that Hurley and ben ruled the island after jack . The best thing in the episode was the dialogue between jack and his father this is probably the most emotional moment in the whole show and great acting from both actors I am really glad that this is the end and I think the people will like the ending if they understood it.

Never Ending
nananow29 March 2022
This finale speaks to those members of the universe who understand the never ending concept of life. It clearly defines our "moving on" and such an appropriate passage for these characters we came to love so much. The struggles we watched are metaphors for our lessons. An absolutely beautiful culmination of an extraordinarily beautiful series.

second-time round is much better
slowcando22 February 2023
I watched Lost back in '04-'10...having to wait every week for a new episode. Having to wait a year for the next season. And having some seasons break in the middle for several months.

I still enjoyed it overall, and also enjoyed taking a peek at the busy online fan communities at the time: everyone sharing feverish theories and building the show's mythology up into something it could never live up to. I was one of the many disappointed at the final season, thought the Flash-Sideways were a waste of time and groaned at the slow-mo cryathon ending. I guess I was hoping for an epic science-fiction sort of resolution.

Since it ended I've barely thought about Lost.

Fast-forward 12 years later, to Sep/Oct last year. Life has changed quite a bit: got a partner & kids now. During a bout of flu my lady fancied watching something addictive while recovering but wasn't sure what. For some reason I immediately thought of the first season of Lost (she'd never seen it).

Needless to say, she got hooked big-time...and so did I. Couldn't keep my eyes away despite knowing the main events. The mysteries, camera & music, acting, dialogue, humour, tension...it all worked perfectly.

Fast-forward a few months later and we're burning through Season 6 and I slowly have a little revelation...these flash-sideways have more meaning, as I know how it ends. And when the finale comes around, instead of groaning I'm feeling the emotion.

They've moved on, and with that realisation I feel like I've made my peace with this finale.

Warning: Spoilers
One of the best and the most emotional finale. I'm still bawling my eyes out. Everything in this episode is PERFECT. Their acting, the music, the plot, the wrap-up of each character. How all of them died and found each other :( they found each other because knowing each one of them was the best thing that happened in their lives!

Wow just wow!!!

This is the second pool for the Final
nicofreezer18 October 2021
They ( IMDb) did a second pool for the Final of Lost, the first one was only 8.2/10 because of all the very stupid people who thought they were all dead since the start ( how Can you believe that ? ) I mean its very clear that is it flash sideways and Christian made it clear in the final. Anyway this is the second pool thats why there is way less vote. But 9.4/10 is a way more acurate rating for the final. This episode deserve a 9.8/10 at least, what a Masterpiece..

Second time round!
maxhunt-6271222 June 2022
I was young when I first watched this series (when it was first televised) I was confused by the ending, confused by the mysteries, and confused by the mind boggling plots. Yet lost still remained a great show.

12 years down the line I recently took the time out to re watch one of my favourite tv shows growing up. Safe to say I am glad I did, I understand now! I think rather than focusing on what the ending was, the real focus is on the journey I personally took with these characters, the amount of time my heart strings were pulled, and the genius character development behind each individual person. In my opinion lost was ahead of its time, this show paved the way for television series in the present day. From its heart felt moments both happy and sad, from its choice of music individually constructed to set the tone. Not to mention how connected you feel with the past and future of each character on your screen. The last episode is not confusing, it is beautiful. It is the only way for this experience to conclude!

Keep an open mind and let your thoughts run wild, lost is and will remain one of the greats!

A beautiful end to a beautiful show
Super_Bob114 November 2021
As someone who recently finished watching Lost, this episode was all I ever wanted. A beautiful and tearful conclusion to a wonderful show. They really did the characters justice here in the church scene.

'The End' Explained: Mythic Imagery Of The Hero's Journey
eddietorbalinda30 September 2021
Everything you want to know about the confusing ending to the series can be found in the DVD bonus feature "A Hero's Journey." The writers were Joseph Campbell fans. (Yay!) The final minutes of the series finale is the culmination of Joseph Campbell's "The Hero With A Thousand Faces." What transpires on the screen during the confusing final minutes of the season finale is the final act of the mythic hero's journey or quest: reward, recognition, and immortality from the powers that be who subjected the person to the hero's journey in the first place. Its a sort of thank you from the universe (or island, as the case may be) to those who participated in the hero's quest. This event, this ceromony, this story, has many names, many tellings, many versions and many faces under many religions and philosophical belief systems. It transcends the human experience. This is why we see the spectrum of religious icons on the stained glass window connected to each other by the tree of life. The story about to unfold in the church has been told and retold in many ways for ages beyond memory. Joseph Campbell called this a "universal archetype." What the viewer is about to experience in the final minutes of the series is the end of the road for the mythic hero, the hero with a thousand faces. You are about to get a serious dose of serious mythology...with a Lost twist. You are about to embark on a rite of passage ceremony.

It starts with the flash sideways. In season 6 we get our first glimpse of an alerntative timeline running concurrent with the real time events of season 6. Where did this alternative timeline come from, and what brought it into existence in season 6 for the first time? The hydrogen bomb detonation at the end of season 5 is responsible for creating the alternative timeline of season 6. Juliet confirms this when she says from the bottom of the shaft, "It worked!" This is verified by the fact there was no apparent aftermath of an atomic explosion in the openig shots of season 6. It appears as if the H-bomb detonation created an alternative timeline via "the butterfly effect." This was done because the island wanted it done. It was the will of the island, and there was a reason for it. The alternative timeline, once again, touches upon the relative nature of time we saw throughout season 5. And, the relative nature of time in the alternative timeline is revealed when Jack says in the season finale, "Why is everyone here, now," and Christian Shepard replies, "there is no 'now', here." Because there is no 'now' in the alternative timeline, there is no time. Therefore, the "zero time" alternative timeline represents eternity, immortality of the soul and a life of happily ever after for those who dwell within it. It's the hero's reward at the end of the journey or quest. It's the Lost equivalent of Valhalla. Some hero's get the girl, some get the gold. Lost survivors get the alternative timeline, and a happily ever after...for a moment. The late season six episodes "Happily Ever After" and "Everybody Loves Hugo" allude to this. The alternative timeline was a way the island (or Jacob) created a special place for the people, the heroes with a thousand faces, who helped save the island from the curse of the smoke monster (Locke Ness Monster), a universal archetype for everything bad and evil that dwells within the hearts of people. Think about it. The Oceanic 815 survivors don't know they're dead in the alternative timeline. They don't realize they're dead in the alternative timeline until they make physical contact with other members of Oceanic 815 and have flashbacks as a result. When they flashback to island crash memories, they have an epiphany, and that epiphany is, "I'm dead, but was allowed to "live" out the ideal life I never had when I was alive." They gain peace, forgiveness and closure from the epiphany and experience in the alternative timeline. Their souls grow. It's a fitting reward for people who were a spiritual mess when they embarked upon the hero's quest. The island expressed its gratitude to the passengers of Oceanic 815 for their service to the island by letting them live out a percieved 'real life' in an alternative timeline it created with an H-bomb explosion. Now on to the immortality part and the final quest of the hero's journey.

Once the survivors finally realize they're dead in the alternative timeline, Hurley is Johnny-on-the-spot. He scoops them up and collects them for a final gathering at a house of worship, an appropriate archetype symbol for the event. Hollywood is good at that stuff. Remember, the church gathering is Hurley's idea, and he orchestrates the whole thing. Also, Hurley is the guardian of the island.

Was the bright light Jack saw as he was dying on the beach a glimpse of heaven as everyone thinks? Or, is Hurley summoning him and everyone else back to the island for one more adventure? The final quest of the hero's journey? Dead people do show up on the island from time to time, and Hurley sees dead people. Hurley has everyone he needs in the church, he's the guardian of the island, and, as Lost liked to point out, time is relative. Perhaps Hurley needs a hand with his own "candidates?"

Can you say, "reboot?" (or movie) Hey, if the X-Files can do it, so can Lost. And, I'm willing to bet that Lost won't blow it like the X-Files did.

Just saying....

There are other clues in 'The End' that point to a reboot or movie.

Kate: C'mon Jack, we have to go now.

Jack: Go? Go where?

Christian Shepard: You're not going anywhere, son. You're moving on.

Or something like that...

In the final scene of the series, Vincent, the island dog, lies beside Jack on his left side. There is a lot of "mythic imagery" here pointing to a movie or reboot. The dog at the left side of Jack as Jack stares at the sky is a reference to the Tarot card 'The Fool.' The Fool tarot card is numbered 0, just like the 'zero time' alternative timeline of season 6. As such, symbolically, The Fool represents the manifestation of the spirit into the material world. It's where the hero's journey begins, not ends. As the scene ends, we see a bright light centered around Jack's eye, and we're reminded that this is how the series began in season 1: A flash of bright light surrounding Jack's eye. Everything has come full circle. A circle, like the number 0. Like the Maya concept of cyclic time. Like Yin and Yang. All that dies is born again. And so it starts again, the mythic hero is ready for another quest. Just like The Fool.

Ok, Jack, get your ass up. Hurley needs you.

It could happen....

One of the most emotional endings of all time.
legendarylankman22 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
While it didn't answer all the mysteries the show brought up, I couldn't help but love this ending, as throughout this show my perspective changed from the mystery of the island to the characters who crashed upon it. The character moments in the end are superb, especially the last few minutes as Jack slowly dies with a smile on his face, and the cast of characters we have come to love move on to another life.

I also felt it was incredibly intense episode, as I knew some/one of the characters were going to die. The fight between fake Locke and Jack, which actually led to the lead character dying (A rarity in fight scenes), was especially intense.

All in all I feel this ending is overly hated. And deserves to be up there with endings like Dark, Breaking Bad and Mr. Robot. As Jack's journey comes to a fantastic close as the saviour of the island.

They saved the best for the last!
Shmaden20 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
They truly did saved what was the best things in this show not only for this finale but more exactly for the last 8 minutes. Here they are:

1. Best dialogue in the show in the scene between Jack and Christian:

Jack: I don't understand. You died.

Christian: Yes, yes I did.

J: Then how are you here right now?

C: How are you here?

J: I died too!

It is the most perfect piece of dialogue in the whole show because just like the show itself, it doesn't give you the answer by telling you it, but rather it makes you look at yourself just like Jack did and find the answer for yourself. And the show is clever enough to give the enough details so that everyone could turn to themselves and reach mostly the same answers. Amazing!

2. Best music in the series. The last 8 minutes fit the "Moving On" track which you can find and listen too. It is the most fitting and perfect way to end this musical journey of masterpiece proportions which Michael Giacchino did for LOST.

3. Best editing in the show by having the scenes in the afterlife intertwine with Jack's scenes on the island as he drags himself to the place he will die. It's fantastically subtle and incredibly moving and emotional.

4. Best emotional moment in the show. To see a character who during the entire show went through the greatest character journey, put his life on the line and sacrifice for the island is probably the most emotional moment in the show for me. And to top that off with having him close his eye in perfect symmetry to the first scene in which he opened his eye. Absolute television perfection in my opinion!

These are some of my thoughts on why the ending for LOST is so perfect in my opinion. It will be for me the best ending for any show ever. And the last 8 minutes are pure television masterpiece perfection! 10/10.

Terrible
rusumarius-9115424 May 2022
First things first, Lost is a halfway decent TV show. But this episode, oh boy, this one particular episode just blew my mind. And not in a good way. I truly question the mental integrity of the writers at this point.

Probably the best show and ending ever
LovingDexterMorgan6 January 2022
I'll take a few minutes to talk about Lost. What a show. What a life experience. Anyone who believes this is a bad ending is not smart enough and has to watch the whole show all over again, maybe they will understand the true essence of this television masterpiece.

The best show ever created
mi_hau9419 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This series flies over the head of most people, and that's because I think many people don't understand the spiritual meaning of it. It's a lot closer to reality than many people think. Like Jack's father said at the very end that everyone's dead. Why did these people go through all those tribulations, just to "move on"? Why was there so much violence, backstabbings, cheating, lying, manipulation etc when they all consolidated in the end? Because they are in purgatory. Everyone on that island had to face challenges designed for their specific character flaws. Some had few challenges, others had many and very difficult ones. Some died earlier in the series, others died late. This is because all of their souls had to be purified before they could move on. Their sins needed to be purged, because no one can enter "heaven" (or whatever you want to call it) uncleansed. I think Jack didn't understand that until his father told him that no one can do the job on their own, we all need each other. As for Benjamin Linus, well he still had a lot of purging to do with all the horrible things he did. This series is so profound that it in my opinion lead to or contributed to a very high degree the great awakening a lot of people are experiencing right now. We're all these characters, we're all lost on an island, we're all dead. And we're all in purgatory.

What a train wreck ending
interestingstuff12 February 2022
Warning: Spoilers
For a final episode of a highly-regarded series, this episode didn't tie any ends, didn't explain anything, didn't answer any questions, just gave us a long drawn out scene of the entire cast having a reunion and cry at each other and people call it a masterpiece because of an actor cries on TV people automatically think it's the best work of art humanity has ever come up with. Basically the writers painted themselves into a corner and they had to make up a ridiculous ending like this.

Oh well, at least they didn't go the usual route of "it was all a dream after all" like a lot of movies do these days.

Emotional episode without any proper explanations...
mrwb775 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Emotional episode without any proper explanation...

Firstly, I enjoyed the finale. Its a heart warming look back at the characters journeys through the last 6 seasons.

Having bing watched all of it over about a month, I've certainly got some attachment to the characters and story.

What bothered me about it, however, is that there's no real explanation of anything. Most especially the split time lines.

It seemed quite obvious to me that's what happened when they nuked the island, time travelled again and in the new timeline they were never lost at all.

Whilst it's nice to have an emotional love in at the church with them all remembering their other timeline lives, with Jack dead or whatever...

I found it a very unsatisfying ending. Lost was primarily about keeping people watching without much thought to long term story coherence.
