Blumhouse again
johnnyhbtvs2730 November 2021
I actually really enjoyed this. It has it's cheesy moments and some ridiculous overacting but it has a charm to it. The plot twists may get a bit out of hand but Jacob Lofland (who should be in a Children Of The Corn movie) is menacing enough to keep things ticking over. One of Blumhouses better recent efforts.

Well, that was weird...
Wikkid_Gamez1 February 2022
Not necessarily in a bad way, a very odd movie, but kept my attention easily to the end. I liked it. This is probably the shortest review I have ever left... I found it worth a watch.

Fun mystery horror
drjacobgrayson7 January 2022
Try this movie if you're sick of watching the same old slasher horror movies. This movie has a good storyline and a lot of twists that I didn't see coming.

Nothing made sense 🤷‍♂️
svrxmpzbz14 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Why did the little girl get bloody noses?

If Isaac weeds out the "wicked" from the "righteous" then why is he grabbing the little girl and making jokes about her looking at him in a sexual way?

What was with the cat getting eaten and then coming back? What happened to the cat at the end?

Why did the house "draw evildoers" to it?

Why were the coyote's eyes glowing?

If the wife could just push "grandpappy" over and beat his head in with a ball ping hammer, why didn't she do it before torching a woman alive in her car?

Why leave your child standing outside with a shotgun when you saw that there were animals outside just moments before? How is that the safer option for her?

How is the moral of the story "be kind" when Isaac and "grandpappy" were evil incarnate? That little girl is gonna be scarred for life... nice work fellas.

Super dumb horror movie. Decent comedy.

Eerie and Unsettling Gothic Thriller ;D
midnitepantera20 November 2021
Interesting little horror thriller, about the BAD things people do to each other. I found Isaac very unnerving and a bit charming at the same time. This feels like an old school style horror movie, like Burnt Offerings or The Other (both 70's gothic horror) I found it overall kinda satisfying except for Toby?? :( That bothers me ALOT.

If you like old school gothic horror, then you may well enjoy letting Isaac and Grandpappy take you for a ride in their beat-up ol truck. :O. Not gonna win any Oscars but it's creepy and unnerving and half way decent acting. I found the Mom's acting to be the worst of all but still worth a watch, if you can get past her robotic emotions.

Bad, just bad
iknowthismuchistrue197420 November 2021
This movie wasn't even good bad. It was just bad. Terrible dialogue. At first I thought it was just the acting but I don't even think an Oscar calibre actor could have pulled this one off. Started off promising and then just went right off the rails. The only redeeming thing about this movie was Jacob Lofland. He did the best he could with this terrible script.

Never come back to the house on the bayou
aarpcats14 March 2022
Evil comes in all shapes and sizes in this compelling morality tale from the bayou.

A woman tries to save her marriage and family with a weekend trip after she finds out he's having an affair. She takes him to a remote estate in rural Louisiana so that they can all get closer. When he forgets to get a questionably available and politically incorrect form of meat for dinner, she finds hell on earth.

The story is a convoluted mix of supernatural, domestic pot boiler and mystery. It's scary and weird fun, with an odd combination of good and terrible acting.

I enjoyed the strangeness of it.

Ugh.
scottkolflat27 January 2022
The whole time I was watching this movie I felt like I was watching a trainwreck. I couldn't look away. It just got worse and worse and worse until it finally ended. I'm not even sure what the point of the story was, but I'm pretty sure whoever wrote this really really really hates whoever cheated on them. Next time instead of making a movie, maybe seek some therapy instead of putting everyone else through this trash.

Good enough
mycannonball15 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
A classic supernatural horror film where a couple and their child are trapped in a house with a couple psychos. This is different than a home invasion story though, because it's more of a reluctant dinner party that goes bad and there are a couple good twists. There are also a few nonsensical moments and the epilogue is overly long, but overall, it's good enough to finish.

Awful acting
Movieshepherd9 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The wifes character was such a jerk. I liked the actress in WestWorld, her acting was terrible in this. So, you're pissed at your husband for having an affair so you endanger them with weirdos, out of spite? Your child hates veal and your husband hates veal, so naturally you want to force them to eat veal at some weirdos house. They write a crazy message on the receipts and you're like its cool, Im going to go your house. Oh and you rent someones house and try to break into a room thats locked. What kind of woman is she? Shes weird too. They come over and the "grandpappy" is rude, I would have kicked him out. Just dumb and awkward any normal person would have kicked them out by now.

Kinda brilliant despite cheesiness
UniqueParticle27 November 2021
I love the way this movie accelerates everything with Issac and the horror that trembles along with him! A House on the Bayou has some reality drama acting that was definitely the downfall otherwise the movie is dope. For a huge horror fanatic this was just right if you don't take it to seriously.

Fun to watch even if it was odd
whytetigress24 December 2021
I love a good/bad horror movie and this was that. I had some moments where I genuinely wondered WTF was going on, but all and all, I had fun watching it and I'd absolutely watch a sequel. Was it great? No. Were there some really odd moments? Absolutely. But it was absolutely worth the watch on whatever channel I randomly DVRed it from.

Scratching my head!
kremicoco20 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I have no idea what I spent 88 mins watching but this was the most disjointed movie I've seen in a long time. There was no horror, it felt like there were so many different themes and none of them aligned. I'm not even sure what we were supposed to take from this. Husband cheats on wife, wife decides not to divorce him but to go on family vacation in the Bayou. They meet Isaac and grandpappy, they have a contentious conversation over him lying about veal. Isaac & grandpappy show up to cook them veal, and from there it mess of a show becomes a hot trashy mess.

The house is not the house, Isaac and grandpappy are not human but they keep evil out of the bayou. So I guess lying about your affair makes you evil and worth dying? I'm so confused.

Unlikable characters
kingreido24 January 2022
All characters are annoying and not likable in any way. What makes horror good is when you develop a connection with a character and hope they survive. In this case, they could all get removed and I'd sleep perfectly well.

Jessica (Angela Sarafyan) confronts her husband John Chambers (Paul Schneider) with evidence of his affair. He promises to end the affair and the couple takes their daughter Anna (Lia McHugh) to a vacation in the bayou. They had rented a mansion. They get invited to dinner with Isaac (Jacob Lofland) and Grandpappy (Doug Van Liew).

I like this movie. I like the revelations. I like Jessica. John surprised me in a good way although Schneider does over-act after the revelations. It seems like he's trying to earn his villainy. Anna is a weak dope. I get that she's a sheltered teen character but she would be more intriguing if she's smarter than that. Isaac is the best. He never stops being creepy but one can see that some teen girls would fall for that. More can be done with the room. That may be an issue with the budget or imagination. If budget is the case, I would show as little of the room as possible. Don't show John inside the room. All in all, I like the twists and turns and the movie's general creepiness.

Confusing
mshaw-5499224 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I get that the old man and kid were supernatural beings who punish the wicked, but what I didn't get was why did they traumatize the daughter and the wife if their main target was the scumbag husband? This was one of those "could have been good " movies if the writing was a little more clearer. If you have a couple hours to kill on a lazy Sunday afternoon then I would say give it a shot.

Thanks Blumhouse

Well this came as a surprise, I don't know how it got into my watchlist but I gave it a chance today. I don't regret it. That was some cinematography and soundtrack. Loved the story too. I was interested all the way through.

Trash. And not in a fun way
filmfan-9535522 February 2022
"You don't believe in the devil, but the devil believes in you"...this cliched af line was uttered in the trailer and should serve as an indication of the level of writing in the movie. I thought it would be bad in a fun kind of way...but it's just bad. Nonsense followed by eye rolling twists followed by terrible dialogue. I was hoping that the MST3K would show up any minute, that's how bad it was.

You are being watched by the devil
nogodnomasters5 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Jessica (Angela Sarafyan) discovers her husband John (Paul Schneider) is having an affair with one of his students (Lauren Richards). She confronts him and rather than divorce, they go on a family vacation which includes their daughter Anna (Lia McHugh) Being a realtor in Houston gives her access to a home on the bayou in Louisiana. While there they meet the creepy Isaac (Jacob Lofland) who has taken an interest in underage Anna and his grandfather (Doug Van Liew). Things become weird.

It is an interesting tale except it has some plot holes which I can't reveal without spoiling a twist. Slow burn.

Guide: F-word. No sex or nudity.

Stereotypical Religious Movie
sweetlousinger6 May 2022
I don't even know what to say. The movie kind of starts off alright. As the movie goes on the acting gets worse, and the message becomes more unclear. This movie stereotypes the hell out of people from Louisiana. They are not all psychotic religious rednecks you know! If you are extremely religious and think anyone who does a single thing wrong should be killed and go to hell, then this is the film for you. If you are reasonable, don't waste your time.

I can't believe the low reviews ...
janmanuel28 May 2022
This thriller is totally different than any I have seen, so I disagree with anyone who says it's mundane. A large portion of viewers aren't happy unless there is constant action or zombies. The suspense was intense. It frightened me. The acting was great and the twists were too. I gave it an extra star because the low reviews were not fair. If you want action look up action thrillers. I recommend. A change of pace from the same old same old.

Had High Hopes...
songod-9500320 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I had high hopes for this film as Blumhouse has made\released some pretty good thrillers in recent years.

The "troubled people in a relationship who go to a remote place to put things back together" is a over used trope in so many genre films. I have never found it believable that people who have come to dislike\distrust one or each other would think going away to a trip of any kind would make things better. If anything, time away or in therapy would do them more good! Thus right from the beginning when the wife suggests such a thing; and then acts like a terrible person to her husband during the trip, makes the set up hard to believe.

Turns out hubby has a plan that centered on the wife picking the location, the house, and wanting a getaway and... What if she had suggested a separation? Counseling?? Hmmm? There would go the entire film!

Tepid dialog and wacky twists (which are not so wacky once crazy is established) follow Example: None of the things that happen seem remotely possible. But a supernatural element which is at first suggested then confirmed allow real world actions\rationale to go out the window.

The actors involved are not given a whole lot by the writer. The best role is given to Jacob who plays Issac and who truly channels the bats**t. Angela Sarafyan and Lia McHugh as mom and daughter are solid, with the latter not given much to do but look scared and cry (I have seen both in better; Angela in the "Westworld" TV show and Lia in "The Lodge"). Everyone else does well with, again what they are given. Any artistic fault lays purely on the writer and director.

The ending leaves us with a "now what?" hanging over the characters.

I wasn't bored tho. Nor was I tempted to turn the movie off! Just wish all performers had been in a better movie!

Cajun Morality tale
jmbovan-47-1601735 March 2022
So, a decent twisting plot helps a somewhat standard movie. An extra star or two for the overall impact and philosophical aspects developed in the film as well as the restraint used by the filmmakers to keep graphic elements to a minimal. It still packs tension in the film but without the use of excessive force. Some elements are a bit contrived, ans that does lessen the impact of the film. But still a decent watch.

Started off okay but just kept going downhill. The acting in this was really bad. Also the background music was over the top and irritating. Plot really didn't make sense. I didn't end up turning it off so that is why I am giving it 2 stars.

Ridiculous
bc_global1827 November 2021
The plot is bad, and though billed as a horror/suspense movie, it's neither. The acting was sub par but not the worst, with one exception; the wife. I thought she was decent in Westworld, but here she is hollow, lacks sincerity and is simply not a believable character. Who would want to be with her? The dialogue as most people have mentioned is so bad that it's borderline comedy. There weren't even any decent shots of the bayou. Avoid it.
