One of HBO’s former hot properties returns in a big way this January, as True Detective season four finally arrives on the service. Will this be a return to form for the gritty show? Well, that remains unclear, but this time around the anthology series will follow detectives Liz Danvers (Jodie Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Kali Reis) as the long winter darkness in Alaska. When eight people at the Tsalal Arctic Research Station vanish without a trace, these detectives need to get on the case quickly.
Also hitting Max this month is the final season of Sort Of. Season three finds Sabi (Bilal Baig) dealing with the unexpected death of their father, and making some big life choices as a result.

Luke Macfarlane is revealing his holiday movie earnings, and he’s not ho-ho-hoing all the way to the bank.
“You were in [Single All the Way on Netflix], was the paycheck bigger [than Hallmark]?” Daniel Tosh asked Macfarlane, 43, during a recent episode of his Tosh Show podcast.
Macfarlane replied, “Smaller.”
Macfarlane has been a Hallmark staple since 2015. Earlier this year, Macfarlane appeared in Notes of Autumn and Catch Me If You Claus. He is now seen in Netflix’s Single All the Way.
“So, I’ve had, like, sort of overall deals with [Hallmark where] I’m gonna commit to five Christmas movies or five movies, but I can’t work for any other networks and they can’t be holiday-related movies,” Macfarlane explained, noting he could sign onto Single All the Way at the time because that was “outside of my deal.”
Asked if Hallmark pays well, Macfarlane nodded and said that his “rate goes up” for successive projects.

Canada, the home of winter, looks to have no shortage of snowy inns set against fairytale-like landscapes with piles and piles of the white, fluffy stuff.
That’s because Hallmark, long a major producer of Christmas TV movies, shoots a lot of holiday flicks in Canada, even if the plotlines are set south of the border. So do a lot of other U.S. producers for whom British Columbia, Manitoba and Ontario offer real snow, iconic mountains and other varied wintry locations to keep American producers in furry parkas coming north with their cameras and Hollywood stars.
In fact, there’s more to budget-friendly production tricks than fake snow on these TV movie shoots, as humble Canada stands in small-town America strung with colorful lights. Shooting north of the border allows producers to tap generous tax breaks and currency savings, seasoned local actors and crews and ample studios and costume...

Amazon’s adaptation of the hit romance novel about a prince and the US president’s son is well-intentioned yet listless
For many viewers, there’ll be something charmingly synthetic about Amazon’s milquetoast romcom Red, White and Royal Blue, another film aiming to show that gay love stories can be just as basic and sickly sweet as straight ones. Its overwhelming blandness is sort of the point, a sign of true representation, but vaguely admirable intentions only get the film so far – a win that it exists perhaps, but a loss for those hoping for something better than a Hallmark movie.
The painfully slow rise in gay stories that cater to a broader crowd has given us some crowd-pleasing winners, standout films like Love, Simon, Bros and Happiest Season, showing the importance and pleasure of watching same-sex romance on a bigger canvas, bursting out of the arthouse closet. But...

During the 2023 MTV Movie & TV Awards, Jennifer Coolidge was honored with the Comedic Genius Award, becoming only the sixth person to receive the coveted honor, which recognizes “actors who have made incomparable contributions to the world of comedy, providing a major influence through their work and transforming the genre at-large.”
However, this year, Coolidge accepted the award in a pre-recorded video message. The annual MTV award show was originally slated to air live, but due to the ongoing WGA writers’ strike, the ceremony was pre-taped.
“Thank you, MTV,” the actress began. “Thank you for honoring me with this incredible Comedic Genius Award.” Coolidge went on to name-drop the comics who have won the award before her, noting she is honored to be in their company.

"So how does that make you feel?" This question has been uttered by just about every incarnation of a therapist on screen, and the new series "Shrinking" is no different. Jason Segel stars as Jimmy Laird, a grieving therapist who realizes he's running on auto-pilot with his patients and trying to numb himself after the loss of his wife instead of actually dealing with his problems. Realizing he needs to make a massive change, Jimmy decides to throw the ethical rulebook out the window and tell his clients exactly what he thinks, much to the chagrin of fellow psychiatrist, Dr. Paul Rhodes (Harrison Ford). Rather than wait to hear how a patient "feels" about a situation, he's dishing out advice that will shake up their lives ... and his own.
If the premise alone doesn't have you hooked, perhaps its the knowledge that "Shrinking" is the latest venture from Bill Lawrence,...

Christmas is quickly approaching, with Netflix having released its yearly selection of original festive romantic comedies.
Over the last few years we’ve seen the streaming service take inspiration from the likes of Hallmark and Lifetime to produce cookie-cutter Christmas romcoms guaranteed to numb your mind like one too many mulled wines.
Revolutionary these films are not, but boy, do they hit the spot during the festive season. With titles like The Princess Switch, The Knight Before Christmas and A Castle for Christmas on offer, audiences have learnt that no plot is too ludicrous for a Netflix Christmas romcom. The more time travel, magic, döppelgangers and fictional European royalty on offer, the better.
With that in mind, I’m taking a look at Netflix’s in-house Christmas romcoms and ranking them based on just how ridiculous they are. This list has also been updated for 2022, which means this is the...

Like a department store that pulls out its winter holiday items weeks before All Hallows' Eve, Netflix isn't going to let a little thing like the calendar stop it from bombarding its subscribers with Christmas movies in November. That's not to say the streamer's exclusive yuletide rom-coms are all bad — quite the opposite, in fact (consider this your friendly reminder to finally watch "Single All the Way" this year).
Fortunately, if films like "Falling for Christmas" (aka the long-awaited Lindsay Lohan Netflix Christmas movie) aren't your bag, there are plenty of other options on the service to choose from that month. Perhaps you'd be more inclined to watch "Slumberland," Francis Lawrence's fantasy film adaptation of Winsor McCay's classic "Little Nemo in Slumberland" comic strips starring Jason Momoa as a shaggy-furred half-man, half-animal with mountain goat horns and an impeccably flamboyant fashion sense? Though embattled by a staff and talent revolt over its stance on incendiary policies toward trans youth, the Walt Disney Company pulled off a significant win at the 2022 GLAAD Media Awards on Saturday.
The entertainment giant’s Marvel Studios division won the media watchdog’s prize for outstanding wide release film, for Chloé Zhao’s “Eternals.” As the first Disney superhero tale to feature a same sex couple — in “Atlanta” star Bryan Tyree Henry and Haaz Sleiman — the tentpole film was widely praised for its depiction of loving queer parents.

The 2022 Producers Guild of America Awards took place on Saturday, March 19 at the Fairmont Century Plaza in Los Angeles. The PGA has been one of the most reliable Oscar predictors around, thanks in large part to the fact that both the guild and the academy use the same voting system – the preferential ballot – to determine a Best Picture victor. Since 2009, PGA has forecast 9 of 12 Oscar champs.
This year, the guild overlapped with the academy on eight titles: “Belfast,” “Coda,” “Don’t Look Up,” “Dune,” “King Richard,” “Licorice Pizza,” “The Power of the Dog” and “West Side Story.” The PGA lineup was rounded out by “Being the Ricardos” and “tick, tick…Boom!,” which were swapped out for “Drive My Car” and “Nightmare Alley” at the Oscars.

Wee-hee! Industry veteran Jennifer Coolidge has finally earned her first-ever nomination from the Screen Actors Guild Awards for her memorable performance in the HBO anthology series “The White Lotus.” Her humorous yet oddly poignant turn as Tanya McQuoid, a woman looking to spread her mother’s ashes while vacationing at a luxury resort, resulted in some of the best reviews of Coolidge’s career. Could this goodwill lead to a SAG victory on her maiden nomination?
If it does, it won’t necessarily be easy. Coolidge faces some stiff competition in her SAG category, Best Actress in a Television Movie or Limited Series, and she’ll face off against a mix of fellow first-time nominees and industry favorites. Also earning her first individual recognition this year is Margaret Qualley for the buzzy Netflix series “Maid.” Jean Smart is also here, but for HBO’s “Mare of Easttown.” Smart had only...

Netflix have really upped their game this year for Christmas movies, at least in the sheer number of them if not for the quality. That said, I always look forward to seeing the next one and Single All The Way is the latest Hallmark-looking festive rom-com to hit the service.

After a single week as undisputed Premium VOD champion, “Venom: Let There Be Carnage” (Sony/$19.99) had company this week with “The Last Duel” (Disney/$19.99) and “Dune” (Warner Bros./$24.99). “Carnage” retained the top spot at Google Play and Vudu, while “The Last Duel” was #1 at Apple TV/iTunes. “Dune” took two #2 spots among its placements.
The two new releases took very different theatrical routes. After Ridley Scott’s medieval combat drama starring Matt Damon, Jodie Comer, and Adam Driver failed to make much impact in theaters, Disney waited six weeks. The film’s star power, director, and violent premise may have generated home-viewing interest.
“Dune” took a different course. This weekend it was still in the theatrical top 10 (a return to IMAX screens provided a boost). It spent its first 31 days also on HBO Max. It debuted on PVOD, pricing it at $24.99 rather than the standard $19.99. That didn’t seem to...

Philemon Chambers is making history with his first feature film debut in Netflix's Single All the Way. The film, which premiered on Dec. 2, is the streamer's first gay holiday rom-com. Philemon plays the role of Nick, who's best friends with Michael Urie's character Peter. The two go home to visit Peter's family for the holidays and try to pretend to be a couple to keep his family off his back, but eventually, they find themselves stuck in a tricky love triangle.
Even through the cheesy romance, you can't help but get stuck on Philemon's lovable personality and handsome looks. It's almost hard to believe this is his first big project. Considering how big a deal this new holiday flick is, we have a feeling we'll be seeing a lot more of Philemon in the future. Ahead, get to know more about the Hollywood newcomer.

It is a truth universally acknowledged that a gay man in possession of a television in December, must be in want of a cheesy Christmas movie. Whether cinephile, theater lover, or “Drag Race” connoisseur, everyone enjoys something silly to half watch while wrapping presents — and no gay can resist the divine decadence that is Jennifer Coolidge. Enter “Single All the Way,” a cheesy new holiday rom-com debuting on Netflix. Gayness isn’t some problem to be concealed, fretted about, or made fun of here, it’s merely part of the given circumstances. Nor is gayness window dressing, cliche-ridden, or milked for comedy. As thoroughly unproblematic a gay Christmas movie as there ever was, unfortunately “Single All the Way” doesn’t leave room for much else.
Led by twinkle-eyed “Ugly Betty” star Michael Urie, “Single All the Way” follows a perpetually single man, Peter, who brings his best friend Nick (Philemon Chambers) home for the holidays.

The streamer’s latest formulaic festive movie is more of the same but with an LGBT twist, competent but lacking chemistry
When 2018’s likable coming-(out)-of-age teen movie Love, Simon was released to an audience of unprecedented scale, a common riposte was that it wasn’t quite queer enough. The high-gloss YA tale of a white bread suburban teen accepting his sexuality was picked apart for its sanitised PG-13 worldview and by-the-books storytelling, playing it a little too straight for some. But it was the film’s sweet vanilla flavour that made it such a radical step, dragging a story usually told in the dark from the arthouse to the bright lights of the multiplex, giving gay teens something just as big and brash as the many, many, many straight-skewed high school films they had grown up on. Because, for some, the fight for basic rights should also include...

'Tis the season for cute and cheesy holiday films, and Netflix's first LGBTQ holiday rom-com, Single All The Way, is so charming and fun.
We'd highly recommend adding this one to your holiday movie list since it follows a fun movie trope of two best friends pretending they're dating and then realizing they're actually might be something more. Still, it's done in a refreshing new way.
With an over-involved family, a hilarious Christmas pageant, three hunky men, and fun Christmas carols, this holiday rom-com will have you smiling from beginning to end.
TV Fanatic chatted with Philemon Chambers, who played Nick, about how the movie stayed so authentic, how he enjoyed working with such a large family, and the fun rapport between the cast.

The queer Christmas canon is getting a new entry this year in Netflix’s new movie Single All The Way. Starring Ugly Betty’s Michael Urie as a West Hollywood-based social media director who doesn’t know a good thing (Philemon Chambers) when it’s right under his nose, Single is built around a sharp script, fun premise,…...

It didn’t unfold at a counter at Schwab’s Pharmacy, but Philemon Chambers has a seemingly-out-of-nowhere discovery story, too.

I had a blast talking to Michael Urie and Philemon Chambers as much as I had a great time watching their film “Single All the Way.” Billed as Netflix’s first ever holiday LGBTQ rom-com, the film has Peter (Michael Urie) and Nick (Philemon Chambers) as best friends pretending to be lovers to appease Peter’s

The year is somehow already almost over! To celebrate another passage around the sun, Netflix is putting its best foot forward with its list of new releases for December 2021.
Netflix’s options of original series are quite vast and impressive this month. It starts early on with two finales: Lost in Space wraps up its story with a third and final season on Dec. 1 and is quickly followed by the last go-around for Spanish hit Money Heist. The blockbusters continue apace from there with The Witcher season 2 premiering on Dec. 17, Emily in Paris season 2 on Dec. 22, and Cobra Kai season 4 on Dec. 31 to close out the year.
