Amazing

Aoi Aoi Ano Sora

Amidst of all the art talk, I never expected the direction of this anime nor did I expect to be moved by it this much. Even though it's ironic that the animation was pretty mediocre for an art anime, the masterful character odyssey more than made up for it.

The main characters were high school students who were trying to get into art schools. Through the process of learning about art, each one faced their own struggle in trying to figure out who they are. Again the theme of identity vs role confusion was at the forefront. The journeys that were displayed all led to another common theme that resonated more with me: self-doubt. Our main guy, Yaguchi, constantly felt insecure about himself. Multiple times I can't help but reflect on myself, and it didn't feel so comfortable.

Another aspect was the difference between hard-work, innate talent, and the expectation that came with each label. The character Yotasuke brought out this theme the most. Sometimes being labeled as having talent or already good at something doesn't feel as satisfying as expected.

Overall, an unexpectedly dark, personal, yet satisfying exploration that I never thought I would love so much. 9-9.5/10.

An "Artwork" about Art
gayalambattaya14 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
In a world that is centered with money and power, Yatora hears his life's calling; the Art.

This is an anime about the creators who work behind the scenes of anime, backgrounds, Art galleries and the masterpieces that all we lookup to; the Artists! Yes, some art students might find this particular anime "Not that great..." as some in the internet says so, But for a person who's into art or a guy who doesn't understand a letter about the Art, This is a Piece of work that enlightens them about the story behind the acrylic and canvas!

Every parent's desire is that their child doesn't end up poor or with a low income. So, they tend to push their children into more earning STEM and Commerce fields. But in doing so, they might put their children into a world of pressure or kill their unique-priceless ideas and passion. Yatora's parent's were the same So, he played a delinquent role outside and crammed everything into his brain at home to stay on top of his class and ease their parent's minds. When he found himself liking Art, the inevitable question came from his parents... "How do you going to make a living with Art?" Confronting your ego, family and skills is no easy task... The character writing and the development is huge in this series. Each have unique skills, backgrounds and their own problems. Some makes it over them while others do not. And this highlights the hardships of the education system and the fine art field's intense competition to be selected into a college.

That's not all! Even if you chose to do what you love, it's doesn't mean that it's always fun and games... Yatora's story gives us that message too! As we sometimes talk about people like that when they do what they love. So, this anime tells us that there's more than what meets the eye or ear!

This show is highly relatable to anyone who has experienced high school. We as an audience feels Yatora's feelings when he goes through Challenges, hardships, achievements and social life.

The Music and the background sounds are unique, especially the ending "Replica" by mol- 74. I can say it really hits hard at the end of each episode As, the ending animation presents us with a sketched montage.

As for the animation of the story, I'd say it's unique rather than saying it's a bit sloppy because it has some amazing animated scenes such as the ocean waves at the winter. I've never seen such animation before in any anime.

So all in all, the storytelling is the main stronghold of this anime. Together with Animation and good music, it creates a beautiful tale that anyone who loves, want's to love art!

A calm but honest story of self discovery and the relationships that lead you there
orenolti13 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Yaguchi is a typical teenage boy, sure of himself, and his friendships, enjoying life, but not really knowing what he will do in his future. When he finds art and really finds passion for something in his life for the first time the real story starts. It is a story of self discovery through art. How to be authentic and yourself even when there are so many roads leading you astray. I love the nuance, that the teachers give advice, but when he is going too far in it, they tell him usually, that he went too far.

The characters are fascinating and realistic in the sense that an anime can be realistic. Internal struggles of a young artist shown through the main character and others is truly fascinating. It shows success and failure, and I wish I knew more about the creators, because some of the stories told seem very personal.

I hope it keeps the tone of success, but also showing the dark side, and failure along the way, it gives such a wholesome feeling, without being too cheesy, that it keeps me waiting for the next episode.

The stand out of this show is the wonderful animation. However, it stills holds some substance behind it's pretty face. It's a very relatable story and i think a lot of people can connect with the character and the hardships he goes through.

Blue Period is a Love letter to Artists
aromalmashok14 November 2021
I fell in love with the anime right from the start, it's really captivating to watch the artists express themselves in a distinctive way through art, Art isn't what we claimed to be , it's far more perceivable!

Watching Yaguchi Yattora make mistakes and start getting good at art was a nice experience.

I highly recommend it.

I Needed This and Probably You Need too
mithatfirat11 February 2022
I read the first volume of the manga and thought this need an anime.

It's been a while I gave it 10 to a show, this one not a perfect show in many aspects but emotions I feel make this show 10.

Just with the second episode I fall in love with it and realize again I have this certain taste.

If a show has someone finding their purpose in life or finding a way to express themselves or someone motivated for something very hard to achieve I am easily hooked and rooting for them.

I am someone that never painted but after watching this anime I wanted to buy a sketch book and paint all day.

I recommend this to anyone that lost in life and need little help to moving forward.

A thing you need but probably you don't realize.
parvigp8 August 2023
What is art and what is uniqueness? Art isn't just painting and it's unique so it doesn't mean that there wasn't anything that inspired the result.

If you want an answer about these " should I watch it, Is it my type, Or Is it worth to watch" I say you should watch it. It might be something you need or like. You might even be attached to it. And if you are planning to give it a try, you should atleast watch 3 episode. Afterwards it will hit to you surely.

Sometimes it goes deep into story telling and human thinking and emotions, which hit's.

There is a lot you can learn about art and painting from it. It's an obvious answer.

You can learn what's going on in painters mind while the person is making the art.

While all the praise being done. It's not a typical series which you get entertainment and stuff.

And it's also not mind blowing or masterpiece. It makes an mood seeing the story so you don't need to prepare your mind that you are watching something different than others.

After all of this I will say that it will make your time. I would recommend a binge watch.

I will give it a rating of 7.6

It is my very first review, so if you are reading this I would like to thank you.

And a gift from me in this internet orianted world be some high class recommendation, from different genra and mediums.

Good, but could've been so much more
RebelPanda2 August 2022
The anime industry's default approach to beloved manga adaptations is to drain them dry of personality, rip their hearts out, and factory-produce them for a market that rewards quantity over quality. Blue Period comes out of the machine an uneven but worthwhile experience regardless of all this.

Yatora Yaguchi is a condescending high school student who prides himself on hard work, rather than relying on natural talent. At the very beginning, he sees a Picasso painting and says to himself smugly, "I could paint that." If you've never picked up a paintbrush, that's an understandable conclusion to reach. After all, people who are good at art are just talented, right? Blue Period strives to destroy this misconception at every chance it gets. The author wanted passionately to convey that art takes time, effort, and a strong work ethic. An unfortunate side effect of condensing a lengthy manga into a measly adaptation is cut content at the expense of this one crucial theme. Despite Blue Period's technical faults, and there are many, its character writing rises to the occasion. Like Yatora, each of their lives is well detailed: We know what motivates them, their concerns about getting into art school, how their family feels about their decisions and all of the turmoil that comes from pursuing their dreams. The show's most compelling theme is talent versus hard work.

In a show about art, there's not enough screentime devoted to the process of creating art. And for an anime about artists, it's about as creatively vacuous as manga adaptations come. Even the untrained eye will notice this anime's an eyesore at times. Nothing is captivating about the visual language. There are no inventive directing choices; every background is drab, unimaginative storyboards, and the editing is lifeless. The character designs aren't very detailed yet they're inconsistently animated. They move like stiff cardboard. The close-ups fail to convey the script's intense emotions because they're flat. Unmoving. Likely they copied shots directly from the source material without considering how color and animation would affect the scene's impact. Having never read the manga, I can only assume poor adaptation choices. The same can't be said for the background music, which isn't haphazardly edited at all. Taiko drums and piano work well here to give seemingly mundane moments an air of melancholy and anxiety.

Drab though it may appear, Blue Period's engrossing story creates tension very well. Yaguchi and his fellow aspiring artists hone their drawing skills in preparation for the competitive Tokyo Art Institute exam. Only a select few are accepted every year-you're never sure if the main characters will fail or succeed. They face constant negative emotions caused by stress, overwork, and self-doubt. Aside from training, the conflict the characters face and problems at home propel the drama and make it consistently engaging to watch.

Yaguchi is a flawed protagonist and a newcomer to art, which makes him the ideal focus for a show about chasing your dream. He said the wrong thing, praising someone when they are comparatively not impressive to other student artists. Yaguchi's mother disapproves of art school at home because his family has a tight budget. But she is supportive upon realizing the effort he puts into his work. His character arc consists of defying his deeply held belief that "People who are true to themselves can't survive." That's the harsh truth for artists, making a living doing what you love is no easy task. The person who originally drew him into the fantastical world of art, Yuka, plays a key role in his development.

Yuka nearly shares the role of the protagonist with Yaguchi-they also want to get into Tokyo Art University. They live with their grandmother, who has high hopes, and parents who disapprove of their lifestyle and choices. Yuka's gender is ambiguous, but they present femininely and don't want to be treated with masculine gender roles. Their gender is a significant detail incorporated into their backstory with sensitivity: they face bigotry, rejection, and insecurities that dig beneath their elegant and confident exterior. Although they hardly get time for character progression due to the disastrous pacing, they are one of the better characters in the show. Though Yuka is a sympathetic character, the show tries to have its cake and eat it too. Yaguchi constantly refers to them as a man with masculine pronouns and by their deadname, Ryuji. No one questions why he uses improper pronouns-the show blames other people in their life who reject their gender identity. We're told Yaguchi feels compassion for them, then his actions make him seem like an asshole. It's detrimental to his character development, and their relationship progression.

Pacing is the most irritating problem with this anime. Originating from the second episode, which rushes past necessary development: Yaguchi struggled to become a better artist, so we're told, but he simply became great in a series of time skips. Skipping his growth goes directly against the story's themes: not everyone has natural talent, and it takes hard work to achieve your aspirations. The studio responsible for this adaptation, Seven Arcs, selected specific story beats but skipped over what they deemed as less important. Rushing through Yaguchi's art training also leaves non-artists in the dark about his processes to create his drawings and paintings. This issue is persistent throughout most of the show. It's not until the last third of the season that we delve deeply into his step-by-step creative method. If the show had put as much emphasis on creating art as its character drama, it'd be great, but significantly longer than 12 episodes.

Blue Period makes a convincing argument for why you should read the manga-and that's ultimately the only reason this anime was made. It doesn't take advantage of the visual medium, but it's a watchable 7/10 anime that could've been a 9/10 anime. In spite of insurmountable odds, its stellar character writing, script, music, and themes make it a success. Shining through a thick layer of grime covering this diamond in the rough is a beautifully relatable story about passionate artists striving for their dreams.

If you are into art, this is a must watch.
gerardchalaux21 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I love it! I found my love for art late in my 20s and there's so much in this show the protagonist has to figure out I also struggled to figure out myself for years when it comes to composition, color and thinking out of the box. I very much identify with Yatora and his progression as he constantly doubts his skills and tries to understand himself better to break his perceived limits and embrace his true self as an artist. I've not painted anything the last three years due to work, watching this anime has opened my eyes again and made me realize how much I miss it.

Anyway. There's one thing I was mildly disappointed with: the ending; I expected him to embrace the last exam with confidence and just floor the competition with some kind of great realization, but it was pretty much the opposite, to a point the show makes it look like passing the exam wasn't that much of a deal after all.

I hope there will be more seasons of this show and we'll be able to see Yatora learn and grow in university.

Rising above limitations
residentgrigo25 December 2021
Adapting 6 volumes with only 12 eps is too much and the order of some events was changed so that things happen more sequentially for the adaptation to divide itself into more singular installments. The artstyle was also got a bit simplified but nothing too crazy. It's the way too bright colors that stand out more but I grew used to it. The anime works quite well given its limitations and the VAs are doing different performances than I expected but they all fit. The acting doesn´t sound like an anime if that makes sense and is quite naturalistic.

This adappation isn´t the slam dunk it could have been but a highlight of the anime year regardless. Prepare for a noticeably different show if we ever get S2 and the transgender girl that gets Yatora into art sadly won´t appear much after the now concluded high school arc.

Inspiring and Thought Provoking
talking_about_movies31 January 2023
This was my favourite anime in Fall 2021. When it comes to story it's pretty simple, but I really liked it's representation of art as a career and different goals that an artist has to achieve to be successful. One thing I loved about this story was the conflict between talented and hard working people. While people often envy a talented person because they don't have to work hard to be successful, talented people also envy the ones who work hard to achieve their goals because they are the ones who get praised for their hard work. While for a talented person people assume that their success is assured, so no one shares their joy of success. I really liked this theme.

A realistic story about Japanese art schools. On the other hand, it is not an ideal story.
sdjmsfd22 January 2024
A story where the main character is unable to influence the people around him. Rather, the main character receives a huge amount.... A realistic story about Japanese art schools. On the other hand, it is not an ideal story. What that means is that there is no comedy at all, and it can be seen as a realistic story about the protagonist overpowering and growing up. I do not recommend this work to those who expect comedy elements like "My Hero Academia", "Dia A", or "Haikyuu". Even though it has something in common, such as "Your Lie in April" and "Eromanga Sensei", this is too realistic. I think this work would have looked more realistic if it had been made as a TV drama rather than an animation. For those of you who will see this work, it is far from the Japanese animation works so far. So the taste may be a little different. I found this work's setting of characters around the main character more appealing. However, it was disappointing that the character didn't appear much. There are also descriptions of a single work, such as "Shokugeki no Soma", but this work is art. So, if you don't understand art, there may be many people who don't know much about it. What's even more disappointing is that you can't feel the charm of the main character. What I liked about it was that it wasn't a character with a twist or anything like that, so I felt like the main character had less guiding power.

Right intention, average execution
pranayjalvi22 December 2021
Blue Period had right intention, but I felt that execution was not that good. The story was quite slow and wasn't much progressive. Although the manga rating is very high, I became less and less interested as the show progressed.

The motif of the MC to find himself by drawing is a good thought, but it felt dragged to me and also the side characters didn't seem amusing at all. The animation was good by Seven Arcs and maybe the story might develop for further seasons.

For Season 1 of Blue Period, I was a bit enthusiastic to watch but wasn't much impressed except the animation and the ED (Replica) of the anime.

My Rating : 5/10.

Good
Mysterygeneration13 January 2024
Why then is a shounen anime good?

Independently inserted The main character, Yaguchi, is a model musician who spent the majority of his career playing in safe waters and disregarding his true calling. Since this is true for almost everyone, it is easy to root for Yaguchi from the beginning and desire to follow his journey.

The competitor that MC finds just as fascinating, if not more so:I thought they would make it just a running meme, which is fine with me, but no, they take this subject very seriously. Ryuuji dresses like a girl because he wants to avoid being attention-seeking, and it was a very mature perspective that the show took. As it doesn't affect the main plot, I'll go ahead and say this: "Ryuuji is a guy."

Every novice artist's dream.
Senryu-Cherry9 January 2022
What I liked- 1. Heartwarming tale about the struggles and success of a novice.

2. great character depth 3. Animation is simple yet beautiful.

What I didn't enjoy- 1. Meddling with too many themes at one time makes it incomplete.

This is an endearing and encouraging story for all the artists who are trying to find their voice but struggling with their inner critic. There are also some tips and tricks on how one can practice. The blue period is one of the famous titles of Picasso's paintings - it's supposed to be reflective and emotional. The show delivered that beautifully. It was very easy to empathize with the character who is trying his hardest to become good at his craft. It's also funny how art school stereotypes are portrayed in the show. We get a glimpse into other characters who are struggling in different ways. I think everyone will find a type which will fit their nature.

There is a strong focus on a character's gender identity. But since they aren't the mc, I felt their character was added for the drama and the plot was handled haphazardly.

So, all in all, it's a good show which will touch the hearts of artists the most. I thoroughly enjoyed it and will remember the validation I got from it for a long time.

Okay, not great
Blueskygreengrouse6 March 2022
I have watched quite a few slice of life animes lately, and I checked this one out. The huge problem with this anime, the male lead has little to no personality. He's a boring, blank slate. Komi Can't Communicate and Fruits Basket had far better leads. This anime has an interesting concept, but the lead character is underdeveloped and uninteresting. The animation is well done, and pretty to look at, but I became bored after the 5th episode.

Why it's a netflix one of the best series
sunaprakash14 January 2022
I don't know why this show not get it credit to begin so informative about drawing and how it makes its take year of training to make one drawing, and to find Inspiration in little things in nomel world,I can relate to this anime because I'm a artist, that doesn't meaning that it not for nomel people it have lot think to love about. The characters have a personality they also growing the show hard work doesn't come naturally or you bord with it that when you drop your comfort zone and when you see around people hard work so hard not because they are talented some try to make they don't sleep hungry, good condition for ther family or because they continue to do there jobs Or simply they like it Blue period focus on simple and like this is truth what the show really wants to show this show don't try to get sympathetic to the character the show each one of them are struggling in the career and personal life, the show really try to do show the how different are characters and view is different in painting because of there struggles or personal life that not all there are many more see by your self and operning and ending songs are perfect and beautiful specially ending. Show will get rods Of Praise and recognition and the season 2 will great.

Lovely and in tune with students
qbykmddk11 February 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I really enjoyed and understand stood how the students felt. I loved the art and the way different students lives are depicted. A family is important in believing in children and can make a difference. I also liked the how the failed students had to deal with not passing and their current situation. Life is like that it's not always clear cut or for sure of things. I truly admired their portrayal of struggle and art. Art is difficult and costly but it brings out a wonderful soul of humans expressions and depth of life. It's inspiring! I think way of living for education though should be more affordable and hinders great artists. Please use art more. Bedsheets and table cloths and even some clothes lack design patterns. Please help all students from art, music science and all other disciplines. Art works should be more popular I think. We are turning a new era rules and society are a bit too ridged world wide.

Not what I wanted; what I needed.
FreeFallAnnie22 November 2023
This title had a 64% match rating from the Netflix algorithm. I know some people love how they can tailor their content, but I am curious as to what lays out of my current scope.

I am so glad I ventured.

My interest started slow but gained traction as I began to consider the amount of metacognition involved in the stream of consciousness narration. This alone made it a gem.

To have a character expressing their thoughts and reasoning for actions, to have it modeled how an individual can have their mind made up, then change it - well. It blows me away at how human this anime is.

This truly demonstrates the complexity of humanity. The various characters have depth and are each their own work of art, sculpted by the team who put this together.

This leaves out the incredibly helpful art advice and activities throughout. Honestly, Blue Period doubles as art class for the viewer. If you are paying attention, you can pick up an artist's way of seeing the world, and try it on for yourself, if only through osmosis of the first person narration.

Lastly, I have been working through similar thoughts while writing, and in the very last episode, at the very end, was struck by an epiphany - inspiring me - which is why I sit here now writing this review.

The Netflix algorithm was accurate. This show wasn't what I usually desire. It's not a show that would have me binge it in one sitting. It's so much more. It made me want to get up. To digest the episodes in smaller bites. To connect with the content.

It's a show I didn't know I needed.

I hope you enjoy this treasure.
