Some of this TV season’s blood has already been spilled — looking at you, “NCIS: Hawai’i” — but as we head toward upfronts week, there are still a number of broadcast shows “on the bubble.”
But as the networks settle in on a diet of mostly stable franchises and fewer series pilots, there’s also less primetime schedule frenzy this year. The days before upfronts week which would normally mean a rapid fire few days of broadcast series renewals and cancellations announcements. But normal left the building a long time ago.
The broadcast network portion of upfronts has been so significantly pared down from years past that it hardly resembles what it used to be. These days, most of the broadcast networks announce renewals and cancellations well ahead of their actual presentations.
Take CBS, which has already announced its new fall and spring schedules as well as all of its renewals and cancellations.

Greg Berlanti and Netflix are going for a ride in the Mystery Machine.
The streaming giant is near a deal for a live-action TV series based on the beloved Hanna-Barbera animated cartoon Scooby-Doo. The project has a script-to-series commitment at Netflix, meaning if the script is well received, it would trigger a straight-to-series order for what is considered a live-action update of the classic cartoon.
Reps for Netflix, producers Warner Bros. Television and Berlanti Productions declined to comment, as a deal has not yet formally closed.

Fans will be getting more of All American than previously expected, but exactly how much more? Well, that depends. The CW show is currently airing its sixth season, and the network has decided to add two more episodes to the season order, notching up to 15 episodes from the original 13 planned, per Deadline. The beloved sports drama is one of the few scripted series left on the struggling network, but the future of the show beyond Season 6 is currently in question (along with its spinoff All American: Homecoming as both shows are currently on the bubble). The trade reports that the extended length of this season is possibly meant to give more room to wrap up the storylines of exiting characters Spencer James (Daniel Ezra) and Jordan Baker (Michael Evans Behling), who are heading for the NFL draft in the events of the series. In a separate report from Deadline, the...

Fifth in a series on broadcast network series renewals. As the CW transformation’s under new owners Nexstar continues with the addition of sports as well as acquired scripted series and international co-productions, questions are persisting about the fate of the last remaining dramas from the “old” CW.
With Superman & Lois set to end with its upcoming fourth season in the fall, that leaves flagship All American, spinoff All American: Homecoming and Walker. They all film in the U.S., making them more expensive to produce than Canadian-made dramas and come from former CW co-owners (now minority owners) Warner Bros. All American Season 6 Episode 3 is all set to be released in a few days on The CW and here are the details you need to know about the upcoming episode of the series.
All American returned last week for its sixth season on The CW whilst the first five seasons are currently available on streaming. Here’s everything that we know about the 6th season!
The drama series is CW’s brainchild that debuted in October 2018 and revolves around the life and football career journey of Spencer James (played by Daniel Ezra) – it doesn’t come as a surprise that this is based on the real-life story of NFL linebacker and Super Bowl champion ‘Spencer Paysinger’.
The streaming success of All American has also made way for a spinoff, ‘All American: Homecoming’ which would be returning for a third season this summer in 2024.

Since The CW revamped its schedule, the football drama All American remains one of the last originals.
Since its spinoff, All American: Homecoming, was also renewed and is scheduled to air sometime in the summer of 2024, it’s not overall surprising they want to capitalize on both.
It’s not uncommon for a TV to expand its universe into spinoffs. Most often, procedural-type franchises such as CSI, Law & Order, and the One Chicago Universe have done it.
However, we’ve seen teen shows do it successfully, including The Vampire Diaries universe on The CW and The Fosters transitioning into Good Trouble on Freeform.
All American and All American: Homecoming are succeeding the way they are. Do we need additional spinoffs?
What is All American About?
All American was inspired by the life of professional football player Spencer Paysinger. Daniel Ezra portrays the fictional lead role of Spencer James.

[This story contains spoilers from the season six premiere of All American, “Things Done Changed.”]
After nearly a yearlong gap since its season five finale, All American made its season six premiere on The CW on Monday night.
The sports drama that is centered around football player Spencer James (Daniel Ezra) — which has followed the star wide receiver and his friends from his days at Crenshaw High up through his freshman year at the fictitious Golden Angeles University last season — will mark 100 episodes on May 27. It’s a milestone Ezra says came as a shock to him, like many others in the series.
“When I was cast, that was a surprise. When the pilot got picked up, that was a surprise. I didn’t expect any of it,” he tells The Hollywood Reporter. “It took me two seasons to give up my apartment in London. I just thought, ‘They’re going to send me back.’”

When Is All American Season 6 Coming? Well, the highly awaited return of The CW’s sports drama, All American Season 6, is generating excitement after a successful five-season run and a spinoff titled “All American: Homecoming.”

All American is returning in April for its sixth season, and there is no shortage of stories to explore after the way Season 5 ended.
During the show’s panel at The Television Critics Association winter press tour, showrunner Nkechi Okoro Carroll joined the cast to discuss all things Season 6.
Season 5 left audiences with several cliffhangers, including Spencer (Daniel Ezra) and Olivia (Samantha Logan) finally reconnecting at the airport as Liv is about to leave Los Angeles to spend the summer in London. Despite a bit of bad timing, Ezra and Logan assured that their characters will have kept their promise to be waiting for each other when Liv returns. However, it won’t be easy.

Brad Schwartz, President of Entertainment at The CW, has “ambitious” goals.
As The CW moves away from only serving young adult audiences towards rivaling the Big Four broadcast networks – ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC – Schwartz knows he needs to find a hit to do that.
This, after all, is the man credited with helping Schitt’s Creek become an Emmy-winning smash.
“We recognize where we’re coming from. We’re the underdogs competing against Titans. But ultimately what we’re striving for is to have everyone stop writing big four networks and start writing big five network. We know it’s going to take some time, but that’s the goal,” he said at the top of his TCA press tour presentation.

The CW met the Television Critics Assn. for the first time since its ownership and brand makeover — and both president Dennis Miller and entertainment president Brad Schwartz came armed with a message: The CW wants to be considered a “Big 5” network, right alongside ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox.

In addition to picking up a pair of game shows, The CW has ordered the new original scripted drama Sherlock & Daughter starring David Thewlis (Fargo).
The mystery thriller puts Sherlock Holmes (Thewlis) out of his comfort zone, mysteriously unable to investigate a sinister case without risking the lives of his closest friends. Enter young American Amelia. After her mother’s mysterious murder, she learns that her missing father might be the legendary detective. Despite wildly different backgrounds and attitudes, the pair must work together to solve a global conspiracy, crack her mother’s murder and find out for sure if she really is Sherlock’s daughter.

The CW is officially in the Scrabble and Trivial Pursuit business, closing deals on a pair of game shows based on the classic board games.
Both have been in the works for some time; Deadline reported on Trivial Pursuit being in the works last summer. The CW declined comment Wednesday, but an official announcement is expected shortly.
Both game shows come from Hasbro Entertainment; Lionsgate Alternative Entertainment, which acquired the eOne assets from Hasbro last year; and The CW. Scrabble is also produced by Mattel Television Studios.

The past three years have severely impacted the broadcast television landscape.
Following a decade of growth — remember the days of 100 pilots? — the TV landscape on broadcast is experiencing further contraction because of production delays caused by both the pandemic and Hollywood’s historic dual strikes in 2023. The result is fewer pilots, a shift to year-round development and now fewer scripted originals as networks bulk up on unscripted fare, cut costs and continue to see development money shifted toward streaming.
On the leadership front, Frances Berwick now has lone oversight of NBC after Susan Rovner was let go from NBCUniversal as part of a larger restructuring, with ABC (Craig Erwich), CBS (Amy Reisenbach), The CW (Brad Schwartz) and Fox (Rob Wade) continuing with their current executives.

Channing Dungey first joined Warner Bros. TV Group as chairman in late 2020 — right in the middle of the Covid-19 pandemic, which made for an interesting first year on the job. Then came the Warner Media-Discovery merger in 2022, and the restructuring that came with it. In 2023, the Hollywood strikes disrupted the business again.
“It’s been a lot of tumult since I’ve been in the role,” Dungey recently reflected to Variety. “I’m hoping — and I’m knocking wood as I say this — that as we round the corner into 2024, we’re behind some of those bigger challenges. I’m sure there will be something new on the horizon, but I’m hopeful that 2024 marks a return to business as usual.”
The entertainment industry remains in flux, of course, with more disruption anticipated this year. But in her own corner of the biz, Dungey said she feels some truly positive momentum.

Just in time for Monday’s Emmy awards, the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative and Dr. Stacy L. Smith, along with the the Adobe Foundation, have unveiled The Inclusion List for episodic programming, which recognizes the most inclusive series in broadcast, cable and streaming.
Following a similar effort for films, the list analyzes on-screen and behind-the-camera personnel from more than 500 programs to determine the 100 most inclusive broadcast and cable series from the 2021-22 broadcast season, as well as streaming series from 2021 to 2023. The project also recognizes 20 producers responsible for the most inclusive content.
“The goal of the Inclusion List is to recognize the stories and storytellers who are taking inclusion seriously and whose content reflects their values,” said Dr. Smith, founder of the Annenberg Inclusion Initiative. “With today’s release of the Inclusion List for broadcast/cable and streaming series, we are excited to acknowledge the creative voices championing inclusion across the spectrum of episodic content.

This is something we don’t see often — reruns of an ongoing broadcast series airing concurrently on another broadcast network in primetime. Under a deal with Lionsgate, the CW has acquired the five existing seasons of ABC’s comedy series The Conners. Back-to-back repeats of the Roseanne spinoff will air Thursdays 8:30 Pm – 9:30 Pm, flanked by original episodes of Canadian comedy imports Son of a Critch at 8 Pm and Children Ruin Everything at 9:30 Pm.
The Conners, which airs Wednesdays on ABC, will begin its CW run Jan. 4 at 8:30 Pm with the series’ first two episodes, “Keep On Truckin'” and “Tangled Up In Blue”. In addition to airing in the Thursday slot, the sitcom starring John Goodman, Sara Gilbert, Laurie Metcalf and Lecy Goranson, will also be deployed elsewhere on the schedule when needed, including on Sunday, Jan.7, behind a broadcast of the Jennifer Lopez starrer The Wedding Planner.

The more things change, the more things stay the same.
That may as well be the motto for the five broadcast networks heading into the 2023-24 season as their corporate parents are increasingly focused on cutting costs, restructurings and streaming. To that end, three of the five networks have made leadership changes in the past year.
The biggest change comes at The CW, which is now majority controlled by Nexstar with former Pop topper Brad Schwartz now tasked with making the younger-skewing network profitable for the first time following the unexpected departure of TV’s longest-tenured president, Mark Pedowitz. Over at CBS, Kelly Kahl and his top lieutenant Thom Sherman and their sizable paydays were bounced in favor of former head of current Amy Reisenbach. Over at Fox, Charlie Collier — who led the network following the sale of its studio counterpart — bailed for Roku with the broadcaster tapping unscripted chief...

Fans just got a new update on when Season 3 of The CW's All American: Homecoming could be released on TV.
Initially serving as a spin-off from The CW's All American, Homecoming debuted on the same network in February 2022 as it showed the story of a young girl leaving Los Angeles to pursue her dreams of becoming a professional tennis star.
That star is Geffri Maya's Simone Hicks, who starred in Seasons 2 and 3 of All American before a backdoor pilot kickstarted her own run in All American: Homecoming.

With more than six months of labor actions in the rear-view mirror, the industry is preparing to restart dozens of productions that were shut down while writers and actors sought new and better contracts from studios and streamers.
The end of the SAG-AFTRA strike on Nov. 9 cleared actors to return to work (though the union’s membership still needs to ratify the deal with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers), and also signaled the beginning of prep work on a host of TV series. Media companies are prioritizing getting their broadcast shows running before the holidays, in hopes of salvaging the back end of the network season. Writers rooms have been open for about six weeks, following the end of the Writers Guild of America strike on Sept. 27.
