Woe Woe Woe Your Boat...
Xstal25 November 2022
Woe woe woe your boat (or canoe) very aggressively and belligerently down the stream (or lake), un-merrily, savagely, combatively, with hostility, nightmares are so much better than dreams (especially if you inflict them on others).

Wednesday's visions plague and swarm, uncertain what they'll reveal or misinform, especially now that Rowan has miraculously reappeared, although it's quite a shallow presentation, with a transformative veneer; the Poe Cup race seeks to add to the distraction, with a Merman tilting scales, through a reflective buoyed refraction, while conundrums are un-riddled making way for exploration, and the darkness doth descend, with very little exclamation.

I like.

Warning: Spoilers
Woe is the Loneliest Number is quite good. Where it goes, nobody knows, but those who are already there.

The only other family member to accompany Wednesday here's Thing and he's a key player in it, as well as being uniquely humourous. Thing has also connected with Wednesday's roommate Enid, thus connecting her and Wednesday more. Didn't even recognize Christina Ricci at first, the prior Wednesday of course. Gwendoline Christie's solid, her character integral in linking Wednesday to her mother's past. Could do without the little one-upping feud and well Bianca entirely... Kill her off already.

Much stronger.

Although it's still not fantastic, the second installment in this new Netflix series is manifestly an improvement upon the first, easing in to the story with far less difficulty & enjoying itself a bit more, now the unenviably hard job of world building / obligatory establishment is mostly completed.

However, I'm still not entirely convinced the creators are fully embracing the "Addams Family" concept, nor are they demonstrating their ability to understand why the joke (that their entire premise is based upon) is funny; Wednesday, Morticia, Uncle Fester & Gomez etc. Are all utterly depraved, sadistic & derive enjoyment from things you'd typically associate as being "sinister" - hence, we laugh at the absurdity of their behaviours & reactions to situations a "normal" person would normally find unsettling - due to how unusual & peculiar their actions are. Therefore, it's amusing seeing how their family interacts in a concentrated space, as they're utterly unrelatable & equally, cannot relate to us. In summary, the humour's borne from the fact that they subvert expectations (in a tongue-in-cheek manner) & defy the conventions most others would abide by in any fictional tale being told.

The creative decision to make the title protagonist sympathetic is resultantly a total contradiction & defeats the basic point of her entire characterisation, so although I understand their desire to cultivate a narrative which audiences can emotionally invest themselves in, the plot centres around the development of a lead who (though they may resemble her) is arguably not "Wednesday Addams".

As good as the first episode!
funnycommentor3 December 2022
The plot of the 2nd episode was really interesting (just like the 1st episode), entertaining and very mysterious. The storyline was very well-written, everything was well-explained. The characters are still very interesting and well-developed. The filming location was the same, just like the previous episode and I really liked it. Sadly, on that episode there weren't any kills, but it was a really creepy episode and I really like the dark tone of the show. Of course, it was a really funny episode and I really liked all of Wednesday's jokes. Overall, it was a really intense episode, action filled and I really loved it. The ending scene was definitely unexpected and I really like the twists, so far..!

Curious
Chromatozies-Dzakwan27 November 2022
In this episode, the story makes you curious about the mysteries that appear one by one. I really enjoyed the storyline in this episode. Found an answer, but the answer even gives more mystery. So story-wise there is no decline from the previous episode. The jokes that are made are also quite intriguing when watching with good timing.

Overall the visuals look well and good. I like the color grading, the cinematography is also good. There is one shot that feels lacking, namely the moment when the POV camera for our main character, Wednesday, is going down the stairs. It felt forced through an instant and somehow tucked in.

Very well done but with one annoying thing...
john_michaels_9750127 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Ok overall. I've enjoyed the.series, the writing and all. Wednesday's natural snarky sense of humor is not explored in this series as I would have expected. Woe Is the Loneliest Number reminds me of 1991 Addams Family movie's depiction of summer camp life with the depiction of the canoe race.

That said, the sound mixing must have been done by Christopher Nolan because just like in the movie Tenet, the dialog is lost in the sound track. Many times I had to turn to my wife and ask "what did she just say." It just needs to be dialed down so that we all can understand all those great witty lines coming from Wednesday's mouth.

Well Done, Claps please.

Warning: Spoilers
The chapter is full of interesting things, but I think it would have been better not to have broken its plot twist, the joke of a plot twist is that it is surprising, but nevertheless I think that the series in that area is a little due when suddenly refutes it with something else, which although it is interesting, It takes more importance to this fact than to the previous one, I think it goes well, it goes fluid, the mystery is intriguing, the protagonists are treated very well.

But, I would like her to develop a specific character and that is the bad girl of the other faction, I think she is a very interesting character, but I need to see more of her, I would like the protagonist to develop more, because this episode did very well with other characters, showing us new facets of them, and as always counteracting Wednesday's vision, which is something that I think is right and makes the character evolve.

Fat pudgy toad
wyogirl-5801017 December 2022
Super disappointed in the Gomez character He's a fat, pudgy toad. Not the sophisticated, upstanding, poised and stoic figure he's supposed to be. Expected so much more from the father figure from the regular show. Love Morticia! She is the most beautiful, poised, elegant woman in the entire show. Wednesday plays the in the role most excellent way. I have watched the Addams family series from when I was a small child and loved every single episode. I guess to pervert the original character to a toad ( Gomez) is disrespectful way to show the real character of someone. I'm sorry to rant, but expected more realistic.

A slightly better second episode for me
snoozejonc7 January 2023
Wednesday investigates the mystery relating to Rowan.

This is a strong episode that mixes intrigue and character moments.

This chapter drip feeds certain information nicely before finishing on a compelling moment that makes you want to find out what happens next. Generally, it involves a number of interactions between Wednesday and other characters, plus the central event of the Poe Cup, which are all quite entertaining.

The tone of the episode is firmly established as Addams characters in a very Hogwartz type environment, with a nice amount of tributes and reference to the writings of Edgar Allan Poe. Nothing feels original, but it still works well for me.

So far, I find certain characters more interesting than others, but Jamie Ortega's Wednesday carries it well enough to keep me watching. What I preferred about this one is that it focuses on using her intelligence to resolve problems, as opposed to the obligatory Hollywood martial arts and spectacle.

Again the visuals are excellent, with cinematography and art design that is very memorable.

It is progressing
benyaminshakeri-0485615 January 2023
The second episode was better than the opening episode.

In the previous episode, nothing was in order.

Now Everything was messy and not good at all. The second episode was better but still had some problems.

I actually expected to see a fantastic series because it's so trending right now; But I was not very satisfied until now.

This episode was able to introduce the characters to us a bit better and that is good. In this episode, we saw a better story than the previous one.

But the music of this series has fascinated me so far, so that I am willing to listen to the opening and closing credits until the end! It is clear that the music of the series has a special atmosphere.

I give 6 points.

This show is brilliant
moviesfilmsreviewsinc6 December 2022
Episode 2 of Wednesday season 1 starts with police officers led by the sheriff looking for Rowan's body in the woods. Unfortunately, they are not able to find it. The sheriff does not believe Wednesday's statement about a monster attacking Rowan and thinks that it was a student at Nevermore. The principal is convinced that Rowan ran away and is not happy about the sheriff's accusations. After taking Wednesday's statement, the Principal wishes the sheriff would leave but Wednesday asks to speak to him privately. The principal eventually agrees to let them talk privately, on the condition that everything Wednesday says is off the record. Wednesday tells the sheriff that she thinks someone is trying to cover Rowan's death. An officer disrupts their conversation and opens the door, allowing Rowan to step into the room. Behold, he is alive! This occurs much to the shock of everyone, especially Wednesday. During her therapy session, the therapist wants to understand why Wednesday lied about witnessing a murder. Wednesday is sure she saw Rowan being killed by a creature but no one believes her. The therapist tries to get through to Wednesday but she is not willing to open up or lose the battle. After her session, she meets Tyler who is shocked to learn she is legally required to go to therapy. Tyler says she believes what she says she saw in the wood before he receives a message and leaves. Later, Wednesday sneaks into Xavier and Rowan's room to look for the book. She finds a mask and before she can leave Xavier returns to the room. She hides under the bed and he gets a visit from Bianca. She overhears the conversation between them and it seems that Xavier was worried that Rowan was planning to hurt Wednesday. She also overhears Bianca's plans to crush Enid in the upcoming competition. Bianca sabotaged Enid, leaving her without a copilot in the competition. Wednesday decides to help Enid so that she can take Bianca down. The next day, Wednesday and Enid team up for the competition. As there are no rules, it is all fair game and Bianca is using this to her advantage. During the contest though, Wednesday has another vision. This time she sees a version of herself and it tells her she is the key. Wednesday continues on, and they use Bianca's underhand methods against her to win. Wednesday decided to stay to solve the mystery in the school. As a fiction mystery writer, it is clear she couldn't resist the urge to go sleuthing. It also looks like she and Bianca will continue to have bad blood through this season.

It's Getting Worse
machina2212 December 2022
I'm baffled that most reviews here seem to think this episode was an improvement on the first one. It takes the show further down the path of 'yet another supernatural teen drama series', and away from the 'unusual and refreshing Wednesday Addams show' path. Which a shame because the character of Wednesday deserves so much better.

Ortega continues to be great (as does Gwendoline Christie), but what she's being given to work with is becoming less Wednesday Addams and more Hermione Granger.

Her ongoing interactions with Thing are the best thing going for the show at the moment, followed by Wednesday's sarcastic lines, although even those are losing their edge. I think the writers are already running out of steam (always room for some cringe-inducing political talking point though - down with 'the patriarchy', am I right?).

The plot itself is dragging. The ongoing murder mystery is uninspired, while the boat race sub-plot was incredibly cheesy. Again, less like the Addams family and more like Harry Potter. The lack of interesting plot wouldn't matter so much if it weren't for how much screen time it's taking away from Wednesday and giving instead to side characters no one cares about.

STILL BRILLIANT. There's no doubt Tim Burton was born to direct this show. His aesthetic and filmmaking elevates the already amazing writing and characterisation of everyone.
quiqueperezsoler27 November 2022
Edgar Allan Poe, Pilgrims, Witchcraft, 1950s Monster-craze, Black Metal, musical and visual references to The Addams' legacy,.. I don't know if it's just that I am in the correct mindset to be watching this show, still clinging to the Halloween mood I always get even one month it has passed and I'm trying to delay the overwhelming early Christmas they try to smother me with (in spite of how I love Christmas also); but this show knows exactly how to harness that 1990s' goth Tim Burtonesque aesthetic and vibe of morbid and grotesque German Expressionism melded with a common-yet-well-executed "teen arrives to a new quirky school" narrative backdropped in a normal American town.

Friendship, quirky characters with strong and varied traits that make them not only all be different but also fit in and work with one another quite well; the common folk who fear the school and yet it makes it plausible for both to coexist. The perfect blend of cartoony over-the-top tropes and good mystery drama with great dialogue and characterisation. And the performance and writing of Wednesday Addams, who is obviously the highlight of the show as she is tenacious, strong and feisty but also caring, empathetic and flawed that don't diminish her strength and determination but enhances her persona by having more layers than a cynical joke-machine with no heart. A perfect strong female character to praise and fear. All her fighting skills, wisdom and other skillset she may have don't make her a Mary Sue at all, they provide her with the tools she needs to take on the dangers of this world as she also remains flawed when it comes to expressing her feelings and working with others. Couldn't have asked for a better characterisation myself, one to be used as a great example of how to write them.

The No-rules race and picturesque dress up, prophecies and visions, school secrets, student secret societies, Hidden traps, suspicious murders all across town... The Harry Potter influence is palpable yet most welcomed as it doesn't come across tired or copycatted. It is delightful to see the many influences of the show in an aesthetic and narrative way from Tim Burton, like Batman 1989, Beetlejuice, Sleepy Hollow and more from him; Harry Potter's friendship and magical-world-building-vs-a-normal-world influences, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina's teen-mystery-oriented plots featuring quirky characters that aid her or antagonize her amidst the social cliques that exist in the school... With tropes inspired by detective shows, high school dramas and even cartoons, the show has every ounce of entertainment as it has a production value believed to have been almost lost in Netflix. It's very easy for a franchise like the one this show may very well begin (I mean, other than the Addams Family one it's already backdropped in) given its popularity, subject and legacy; to fall into the mainstream, quantity-over-quality-level of production that some famous IPs have become nowadays.

So lets see where this show leads to and I really really hope they maintain the same care in the filmmaking, framing, editing, characterisation and narrative that this show has because I believe it is truly special and unique. And each story thread that opens up or reveals itself adds only more value to the world building of this wonderful world. I always enjoyed the Addams Family world but I've never seen a more grounded and layered yet still comedic version as this one. Keep it up!

Nevermore leaves something to be desired
lorenarufino112 February 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The second episode does a good job at introducing various characters, but it's not as strong as the first one, in my opinion. That's because Nevermore doesn't look like a school since students are mostly seen engaging in all sorts of extracurricular activities; Bianca's plan to win the Poe Cup is lame and takes up too much screen time; and every scene, no matter what they're doing, it's the same group of 4 or 5 students.

Some problems with the series manifest as early as this episode: the difficulty in establishing Wednesday's moral standards (good and bad "terrible"?) and the attempt to turn whining, tortured artist Xavier into a love interest. Can't a girl make friends with the people she meets without getting embroiled in a love triangle? Eugene, however, is adorable.

Finally, Wednesday's problem with her mother and Tyler's with his father make for interesting parallel plot points that most people, especially teenagers, can relate to.

She is not "Wednesday Addams," even though she may look like her
Escapist-280227 November 2022
The second episode of this new Netflix show is a big step up from the pilot. It fits into the story with a lot less trouble and seems to have a little more fun now that the hard work of setting up the world and introducing the characters has been done for the most part.

I can see that the writers tried to make a story in which the audience can feel something, but the story is about how the main character grows up, and she is not "Wednesday Addams," even though she may look like her. I can see that the writers tried to make a story that the audience could feel something about.

As mysteries are unravelled one at a time in this episode's narrative, you will find that your attention is piqued. The storyline of this episode piqued my curiosity quite a bit. Although I now have an explanation, it merely creates more questions. To put it another way, the storyline of this episode is not worse than the one that came before it. When seen at the appropriate time, the gags are intriguing in and of themselves as well.

The visuals are really appealing to the eye. Both the cinematography and the way the colours were changed stood out to me as particular strengths of the show.

Here we woe again
tyggfqxcm7 December 2022
Some Degrassi mixed now with Harry Potter. I get that it's planted itself with the high school drama genre, but it's not as unique as it seems to think of itself. The dialogue continues to be flat so I guess this is the way Ortega has either chosen or been directed to be for the series and we're stuck with it. No, it's not just her dialogue. Yes, I get that hers is purposefully straightforward, it just doesn't work with the lack of wit or brevity where this kind of delivery tends to shine. Again, marks for competent execution but some of the actors were distractingly bad in this one. It needs to improve fast and I now realize I was too harsh on the opening episode.
