Chapter 6

Paul's son Oliver is having a strop at the breakfast table while reading The Guardian. I noticed he had a youth club to go to while complaining that there were no jobs in early 1980s Britain for kids like him.

Lucky Oliver. No youth clubs or The Guardian for me at that time. Although my older brother used to buy the local newspaper which liked to complain about the incompetent local Labour council and he always agreed with them.

Something must have rubbed off on me. I never bought the local rag but did become a Labour councillor.

In this episode Paul Brack gets infatuated with solar power as well as a council leader who wants to develop the run down part of the town with its own energy supply.

Paul wants Harlan to get involved with the council. It was almost a precursor to the public/private initiative championed by Michael Heseltine. Actor Patrick Allen drops in as a government minister but it would had been nice if he came in a helicopter.

Well at least the solar power ideas had gumption and some of them are being developed now.

Obviously I did not think much of the council scenes. It was more a figment of the writer's imagination than reality. As for the council leader, what a lazy cliche. Caring white left wing, give her two adopted black kids.
