Action romance is a tricky genre to master — it requires the right balance of heart and spectacle. But when done well, à la “True Lies” or “Mr. and Mrs. Smith,” it will live on forever in the rewatch rotation.
Stunt coordinator-turned-director David Leitch has launched cars straight into the air and staged fight scenes that have had theaters erupting in thunderous cheers. His latest challenge, however, will be making the audience’s heart melt with “The Fall Guy,” in theaters now. Smartly, he cast Ryan Gosling, the living embodiment of a junior high schooler’s diary entry, to play the hero.
Adapted from the 1980s series, the Universal film follows down-at-his-heels action choreographer Colt Seavers (Gosling), who must unravel a treacherous mystery while on the set of the next big blockbuster. The movie happens to be directed by his ex-girlfriend, played by Emily Blunt.

Penelope Featherington and Colin Bridgerton entering into a unique arrangement, J.Lo fighting evil artificial intelligence, the roasting of an NFL legend, a retelling of the invention of the Pop Tart, Brooke Shields and Benjamin Bratt at war and John Mulaney’s six-night live comedy event from Los Angeles are some of the big titles hitting Netflix in May.
Debuting on May 3 is Jerry Seinfeld’s directorial debut, Unfrosted. The comedy legend works both sides of the camera for this humorous feature take on the birth of the Pop Tart. The movie is set in 1963 as breakfast cereal giants Kellogg’s and Post compete to become the first company to create a morning pastry. Melissa McCarthy, Jim Gaffigan and Amy Schumer also star, with Hugh Grant more than likely to steal the whole film with a turn as Tony the Tiger.

Pop quiz hot shot: What’s the best action movie of the past 20 or 30 years that never received a cinematic sequel? Nope, it’s not Speed. Is it Wanted? Nobody? The Accountant? How about Knight and Day or American Made? While the latter comes from director Doug Liman, we’d argue that the correct answer is Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Liman’s eminently watchable assassin thriller that continues to shine thanks to the explosive chemistry between Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, two luminous movie stars who met and fell in love during production. Although the movie earned decent reviews and grossed nearly half a billion dollars worldwide, Mr. & Mrs. Smith never received an official sequel or cinematic spinoff and is often remembered for the juicy tabloid gossip surrounding its two superstars.
Yet, in 2024, a small-screen adaptation of Liman’s hit action flick has been produced by Amazon Prime Video,...

At the start of the current Emmys season, our in-house editors and cadre of awards experts generally agreed that the next Best Drama Actress winner would be Jennifer Aniston (“The Morning Show”). That wasn’t the case for long, however, as the expert odds have now consistently favored Imelda Staunton (“The Crown”) for over two months. Although the editors’ opinion is shared by a majority of our 2,000+ Emmy predictors, the experts could be onto something given the wide open nature of this and many more 2024 Emmy races.
Staunton’s claim to victory is strengthened by the fact that her show is the only past Best Drama Series nominee currently vying for that prize (which it won three years ago). It also helps that her supporting cast mate, Elizabeth Debicki, is her category’s obvious frontrunner due to her status as the sole 2023 drama acting contender eligible for an immediate return.

Of course, making a compelling action show is a tricky business, but there are a small number of projects that have managed to achieve the perfect mix of interesting storylines and thrilling action scenes, and critics have not hesitated to praise them.
Here are 15 action shows with near-perfect Tomatometer scores on Prime:
Of course, not all of the shows on this list were produced by Prime Video, as some of them are simply acquisitions from other networks, but their presence on the platform still makes its action show library feel even stronger.
That said, new original shows like "The Boys" and "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" have certainly elevated Prime Video's stature and made its library feel full of Tomatometer-approved action shows, proving that some producers still care about the artistic sides of shows, not just the commercial ones.
If you thought action series were a total waste of time, the...

It has been a lucky 13 years since Tom Hiddleston first played Loki, the God of Mischief in the film “Thor.” He returned to the role recently for season two of the TV series “Loki.” This Disney+ show provided a beautiful end (we’ll see) to the character’s epic arc.
The sophomore outing of the series seee Loki trying to save the universe with the help of Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino), Mobius (Owen Wilson), and Ouroboros (Ke Huy Quan). Kang (Jonathan Majors) is once again at the center of the trouble. The series is fantastical and is held together by the superb performance of Hiddleston. Once again, this classically trained actor brings Shakespearean authority to the role. He is also able to infuse increasing vulnerability to the former villain, making Loki one of the best characters in MCU history. Critics agree, “Loki” is the Tom Hiddleston show.

“Loki” could conjure up a Best Drama Series nomination this year and give Disney and Marvel representation at this year’s Emmys. The second season of “Loki” continues the journey of Tom Hiddleston‘s titular former villain as he attempts to save the multiverse. Loki traverses the multiverse with the help of Owen Wilson‘s Mobius, Ke Huy Quan‘s Ouroboros, Sophia Di Martino‘s Sylvie, and Wunmi Mosaku‘s Hunter B-15. They are hoping to repair the damage caused to the multiverse during the events of the first season, with Kang (Jonathan Majors) again at the center of the trouble.

“Outwardly, he gives the impression that he doesn’t care very much,” Gary Oldman recently said about portraying a disgraced MI5 agent on the acclaimed AppleTV+ spy drama “Slow Horses,” explaining that underneath his disheveled exterior, there’s so much more to the man than what meets the eye. “He’s unkempt, and he uses it to play a game. It’s a defense mechanism, and I would say he cares a lot more than most.”
Oldman is mesmerizing in “Slow Horses” as the aloof and often contemptuous Jackson Lamb. He’s a pariah living out his twilight days as the begrudging leader of a group of fellow outcasts to whom he is almost comically obnoxious and offensive. He is truly captivating every time he’s on screen. So, a brilliant performance deserves a brilliant Emmy campaign. Welcome to Emmy Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Emmy race — via Slack, of course. This week, we revisit the still unpredictable drama field.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! It’s Friday and we’ve circled back to the most chaotic genre of this Emmys cycle: drama. That’s fitting, I guess, because, you know, drama! But this remains a field that’s wide open spaces, with a placeholder frontrunner in “The Crown” and then a bunch of new shows vying for attention and older series looking to get on the academy’s series radar for the first time. I don’t know what to make of this, except to wait patiently for one or more of those favored limited series to make the jump here. But until that happens, we must prognosticate with the hand we were dealt.

Don’t we all? Since the couple split in 2016, they’ve been locked in an intensive years-long legal battle over custody and legal assets.
In fact, the custody battle took too long that half of their six children are now of legal age, namely Maddox, 22, Pax, 20, Zahara, 19.
At this point, Brad Pitt reportedly cares less than he used to at the beginning. This is coming after reports surfaced to say that Pitt had abused ex Angelina Jolie long before the plane ride that decidedly ended their marriage.

Emma Stone became the lucky 13th two-time Best Actress Oscar champ with her recent win for “Poor Things.” And she could well be adding an Emmy to her awards collection for her leading role in Showtime’s idiosyncratic drama series “The Curse.”
“The Curse,” created by Nathan Fielder and Benny Safdie, follows a newly married couple (Stone and Fielder) who host an HGTV show while trying to conceive a baby and navigate a curse. Sure the series is rich in cringe comedy that is hard to tear your eyes from even if you watch through your fingers. But it is also intelligent, dark and surprisingly moving. At the heart of it all is Stone, who delivers yet another tour de force, as noted by critics.

Apple TV’s “The New Look” tells the story of Christian Dior (Emmy champ Ben Mendelsohn) as he struggles to create a new fashion line in Paris soon after the end of World War II. He comes into conflict with the legendary designer Coco Chanel (Oscar winner Juliette Binoche). This sumptuous costume drama spares no expense and showcases these two award-winning actors.
Critics have embraced the show, too, with Angie Han (The Hollywood Reporter) calling it “handsome and heartbreaking.” Among the others giving it rave reviews:
Joyce Slaton (Common Sense Media) observed: “‘The New Look’ is a powerful and complex look at what terror and oppression does to people both ordinary and extraordinary alike; not an easy watch, but a great one.”

Showtime’s “The Curse” is one of the most unique TV entries of the past year. The acclaimed drama series from Nathan Fielder and Benny Safdie follows a newly married couple (Fielder and Oscar-winner Emma Stone) who host an HGTV show trying to conceive a child while navigating a curse.
The show’s tone and style, a satirical black comedy, makes for extraordinary viewing and while it is classified as a drama for awards purposes, it transcends genre classification in reality. Critics agree, this is one of the most unique and colorful TV shows out there.
Richard Roeper (Chicago Sun-Times) explained: “To its credit, ‘The Curse’ never takes its foot off the pedal, to the point where we’re absolutely sure Whitney and Asher are going to crash and burn — yet we’re still not prepared for the inspired lunacy of the fate that awaits them.”

Apple TV’s “Slow Horses” has quickly become one of television’s most exciting shows. Based on the book by Mick Herron, the show combines razor-sharp writing (from showrunner Will Smith of “The Thick of It” fame) with masterclass acting from the likes of Gary Oldman and Kristin Scott Thomas.
The series follows the lives of those working at Slough House, a division of MI5 where disgraced agents who have made mistakes are exiled. It’s full of wit and humor, as one would expect from a show created by an alum of “The Thick of It,” but it’s also a genuine thriller, too, as all the best spy stories are. And critics have fallen for it since its inception, continuing to heap praise on this third season.

Amazon Prime Video’s “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” is taking this Emmy race seriously.
With stars Donald Glover and Maya Erskine leading the charge, “Mr. & Mrs. Smith,” which draws inspiration from the 2005 movie featuring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, is set to compete in the drama categories at this year’s awards ceremony.
Crafted by Glover and Francesca Sloane, the show’s debut season stretches across eight episodes, centering on John and Jane Smith, secret agents who pose as a married couple while working for a shadowy corporation. When Mr. & Mrs. Smith was announced as a TV series for Prime Video in 2021, there were plenty of reasons to be skeptical about the project.
It was based on a movie of the same name that did reasonably well but isn't especially well-remembered.
The announced starring duo of Donald Glover and Phoebe Waller-Bridge was intriguing, especially considering that both performers were credited as creators.
Both had a history of starring in and creating successful series, including Glover with Atlanta and Waller-Bridge with Fleabag. Plus, Waller-Bridge served as the showrunner in the first season of Killing Eve, another prestige series about an assassin.
But then Waller-Bridge dropped out of the project just a few months after it was announced due to "creative differences," with Maya Erskine replacing her as the show's female lead. Glover and Francesca Sloane are credited as the co-creators.

After its premiere at South by Southwest on March 8, 2024, “Road House” began streaming on Prime Video March 21 via Amazon MGM Studios. The film directed by Doug Liman was written by Anthony Bagarozzi and Charles Mondry. Reviews of the film have been mixed, but it currently holds fresh on Rotten Tomatoes with a score of 68%. You can finally put your mind at ease knowing why a sequel to this classic romantic comedy, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, starring two renowned actors, who later became a real-life couple, was never made.
Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt appeared as Jane and John, two highly skilled assassins posing as an average suburban couple, in Doug Liman’s 2005 flick. The dramatic real-life romance between its two stars made this 20th-century Fox film famous—or infamous, perhaps (for the offscreen romance headlines). The Smiths were thrown into an unexpected adventure when they found out that they were both spies and had been given orders to kill each other because they worked for different agencies.

In 2010, Jolie disclosed that attempts had been made by “people” to reunite her and the actor (whom she would later marry in 2014) for a sequel to the 2005 movie.

Welcome to Emmy Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Emmy race — via Slack, of course. This week, we discuss the drama field, which has lots of open slots.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! It’s Friday and we’ve saved the drama long enough. To misappropriate a classic line from one of my favorite comedies for purposes of this column: Are we having fun yet? Once home to “Succession,” “Better Call Saul” and “The Last of Us” among other bangers, this year’s drama category feels somewhat lighter by comparison. There is no real frontrunner, at least in the way we’ve been used to here, so that leaves “The Crown” — three years removed from its Emmy sweep but with a demonstrably less-loved season — and “The Morning Show” at the top of the predictions charts. Sure? I could...

Jennifer Aniston truly practices what she preaches. She’s told us that she’s way too old to keep on holding onto “grudges” and so she is.
A source said that she even found it in her to heart to completely forgive Brad Pitt after he made this touching gesture.
Jennifer Aniston And Brad Pitt Were Reportedly In Touch During His “Messy” Divorce With Angelina Jolie
If Aniston’s got a secret to forgiving your exes and still being friends with them, girl’s gotta spill. I mean, she and Justin Theroux are still as cute as anything and now she’s friends with Brad Pitt?
If you remember the beginning of the Brangelina era, you’d know that what she was put through at the time would turn somebody off someone else for a lifetime, but that’s our Aniston, always looking for ways to let go of a grudge.

Hollywood star Brad Pitt has won another round in his legal battle with ex-wife Angelina Jolie over their co-owned French vineyard, Chateau Miraval.
The dispute centers around Jolie’s decision to sell her stake in the winery to Russian oligarch Yuri Shefler in 2021, which Pitt claims breaches their original agreement.

The Fight Club star filed the lawsuit against Jolie in February 2022, accusing her of breaching their agreement by selling her stake to Shefler without offering him first refusal. The lawsuit seeks to reverse the sale. In a countersuit, Nouvel (Yuri Shefler’s company) is seeking a staggering $350 million in damages from Pitt.

Seven years ago, Donald Glover won his first two Emmys, Best Comedy Actor and Best Comedy Directing for “Atlanta.” While he missed out on nominations last year for the final season of his FX series — he did receive a writing bid for “Swarm” — Glover is back in the hunt this cycle with “Mr. & Mrs. Smith.” Inspired by the Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie film of the same name, the spy series is competing in drama, which means Glover could become just the second man and third person to win lead Emmys in comedy and drama.
Carroll O’Connor is thus far the only male performer to have achieved this, having pocketed a record-setting four Best Comedy Actor Emmys for “All in the Family” in 1972 and three in a row from 1977-79 before adding a Best Drama Actor statuette for “In the Heat of the Night” in 1989. Mr & Mrs Smith Season 2 is likely because of how successful the first season was. Remakes are the hottest commodity right now, and with Twilight and Harry Potter in the works, it isn’t a surprise that the iconic 2005 film of the same name that brought Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt together got the same treatment. The remake is worth a watch, with Atlanta creator Donald Glover and Francesca Sloane creating the Prime Video series. Like the movie, the series follows spies Jane and John on secret missions before they turn against each other. The spy American TV series starring Glover and Maya Erskine is entertaining, ranking as one of Amazon’s top five
