Super Bowl commercials aren't just movie trailers -- it's also the time of year when far less flashy brands pay the big bucks to get stars in their ads, ones that all of America will see. Sometimes, those ads can get pretty wild.
This year, we got one from State Farm Insurance featuring the talents of former bodybuilder and Governor of California Arnold Schwarzenegger (who's also starred in a few movies you may have heard of). The ad is titled "Like A Good Neighbaaa," referencing both State Farm's company slogan and Arnold's famous Austrian accent. And that pronunciation difference is the keystone of the ad.
Arnold, in a red State Farm shirt, rushes out of a burning house (which explodes behind him) carrying two dogs to safety. "Agent State Farm" is initially shown only from the shoulders down, but his face is revealed once he recites the company slogan.

Mr. & Mrs. Smith definitely didn’t surpass expectations, it mostly left us with question marks for expressions because of how lackluster the show really was. I suppose you could say there are some good parts; you’ve got beautiful sets and some fun fashion choices, but most importantly, a bunch of cameos that are meant to enhance the show considering how dull it is otherwise. Not to say that Donald Glover and Maya Erskine are incapable of holding our attention, but it’s probably a mix of the writing and the pacing of this show that had me completely bored by the end of it. And, no, even these incredible special appearances did not pique my interest in any way. However, they do add a little bit of fun, even if briefly, to the mostly tedious show. Mr. & Mrs. Smith follows spies in this new spyverse, where there is...

Hulu’s savage new original film The Mill offers a nightmare vision of corporate America controlled by algorithms that physically, mentally, and emotionally punish employees who don’t achieve their quotas. The movie doesn’t seem particularly far-fetched in 2023, despite its outrageous set-up, which is something that the filmmakers have acknowledged.

Specialty U.S. distributors Uncork’d Entertainment and Dark Star Pictures have acquired Italian director Pasquale Marrazzo’s LGBTQ drama “The Neighbor” for release in North America from Rome-based Coccinelle Film Sales.
“The Neighbor” (which is titled “Hotel Milano” in Italy) is about two young men who are in love but get bullied by a gang of neo-Nazi skinheads that makes their life impossible as hatred and intolerance seeps into the rapport between their respective families.
It’s the fifth feature written and directed by Marrazzo whose debut “South of the Sun” launched from Toronto’s Discovery section in 2001. Marrazzo’s “I Dream of the World on Friday” was in Locarno’s Filmmakers of the Present Competition in 2009.
Marrazzo self-produced “Neighbor” does not yet have Italian distribution. Pic stars newcomer actors Michele Costabile and Jacopo Costantini as the leads and boasts a score by prizewinning Italian composer Teho Teardo.

In recent years, Film Independent Spirit Award voters have more often than not gone for the movies most likely to win at the Academy Awards the next day. But they didn’t have that option with this year’s Best Feature nominees, none of which had even been nominated for the Best Picture Oscar.
So they went with the closest thing they could find to an Oscar movie: Barry Jenkins’ exquisite love story “If Beale Street Could Talk,” which was nominated for three Oscars but woefully left out in the top category.
The film was named Best Feature, Jenkins took the award for directing, and the 2019 Spirit Awards ended up feeling sort of like an alternative to the Oscars, but sort of like the closest thing that Spirit voters could conjure up.

Known as a notoriously unpredictable bunch, the Academy’s documentary branch has become rather predictable in the past two years.
The evidence lies in the films they choose not to recognize come Oscar time: Films such as Brett Morgen’s 2017 Jane Goodall docu, “Jane,” and two of last year’s biggest nonfiction box office successes — Morgan Neville’s “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?” and Tim Wardle’s “Three Identical Strangers.” Both Neville’s Mr. Rogers doc and Wardle’s film about identical triplets separated at birth premiered at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival to critical acclaim. Both films also went on to do the seemingly impossible and strike a chord with audiences all over the country. “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?” grossed $22.8 million domestically, making it the 12th-highest-grossing doc of all time. Meanwhile, “Strangers” also defied documentary theatrical odds when it drew in $12.3 million.

“Won’t You Be My Neighbor?” not showing up in the Best Documentary Feature lineup was one of the biggest shockers on Oscar nominations morning. The Mister Rogers doc grossed an astonishing $22.8 million at the box office, dominated in critics wins, and was fresh off a victory at the Producers Guild of America Awards. It had long been assumed that “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?” would be an easy prediction to call on Oscar night, considering the entire voting academy picks the winners and is receptive to high-profile docs about showbiz lately. So now that “Neighbor” is out of the running, what film could win?

Who doesn’t love Mr. Rogers? Well, for one, the documentary branch of the Motion Picture Academy of Arts and Sciences. When the five feature doc nominees were announced on Tuesday morning, several anticipated titles showed up, including the Ruth Bader Ginsberg bio-doc “Rgb” and the vertigo-inducing mountain-climbing adventure “Free Solo.” Also considered top contenders were “Minding the Gap,” which compares the lives of three men growing up in Rockland, Illinois, and “Hale County This Morning, This Evening,” which focuses on the current state of African-Americans in Alabama.

To really nail your Oscar predictions you don’t just need to get the lay of the land when it comes to Best Picture. You also need to know your stuff when it comes to Best Foreign Language Film, Best Documentary Feature, and Best Animated Feature, which are often notorious for leaving out perceived front-runners in favor of out-of-left-field inclusions. Gold Derby contributors Charles Bright and Riley Chow recently joined me for a slugfest to debate these tough-to-call races. Watch our video above.

Four of the most successful documentaries of recent years remain in contention for a prize beyond box office glory—the kind that comes with an Oscar trophy.
Won’t You Be My Neighbor?, Rbg, Three Identical Strangers and Free Solo all made the Oscar documentary shortlist as the Academy culled the list of 166 eligible nonfiction films down to an exclusive 15.
Morgan Neville’s Neighbor, which explores the work of children’s television pioneer Fred Rogers, has become the top-grossing biographical documentary of all time with more than $22 million in earnings. Rbg, the film directed by Betsy West and Julie Cohen that documents Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, started the box office gold rush earlier in the year, amassing just over $14 million.

Juicy J recruited Travis Scott for his druggy new single “Neighbor.” The Three 6 Mafia rapper barks melodic, auto-tuned hooks throughout the track over an airy trap beat laced with synth-flutes and backing chants.

With the year’s end “light at the end of the tunnel” in sight, 2018’s parade of distinguished feature documentaries marches on with another “crowd-pleaser” bringing up the rear. Cinemas have been host to truly exceptional works of non-fiction filmmaking. This week’s release joins the impressive list of the “celebrity showbiz profile” sub-genre that includes the box office hit Won’T You Be My Neighbor along with Whitney, McQueen, and Quincy. Though music doesn’t play as big a role in this subject’s life as in several of these films, she made her greatest cultural impact on television, just as Neighbor’s Fred Rogers. Oh, and her works were much more “adult” in nature, While Rogers was a daytime TV king to countless kids, she was the first real “queen of late-night TV comedy”. And while she’s been gone for nearly three decades, her influence seems to be felt now,...

Song placement plays a very important role in a film – a song can make you feel happy, sad, nostalgic or make you laugh. Scores can certainly do the same thing, but sometimes a well-placed song works better than any composed piece could. However this tact rarely applies to horror films, especially when leading up to a climatic moment or a jump scare. You can usually sense when these moments are coming – the score becomes ominous, (or even drops out completely) causing your heart beat to quicken as you sense something terrifying is about to be revealed. These moments are almost always driven by score and rarely (if ever) feature a lyric-filled song. And this choice makes sense since lyrics would probably distract from the suspense of the moment instead of drawing it out and, in turn, drawing you into the horror. For horror films, songs with vocals are usually left for party scenes or if a character...

Neighbor
Stars: America Olivio, Christian Campbell, Lauren Rooney, Mink Stole | Written and Directed by Robert A. Masciantonio
Made in 2009 and unreleased in the UK until now, Neighbor comes from writer/director Robert A. Masciantonio, whose earlier film Cold Hearts was famous for starring former pink Power Ranger Amy Jo Johnson. This time round his lead is America Olivio, last seen in the grindhouse inspired Bitch Slap, who stars as the unnamed “neighbor” of the title who wanders the suburbs of Canada, breaking into homes and torturing their owners. Which is nice work if you can get it.
Unfortunately for bachelor Don (Campbell, who also starred in Masciantonio’s Cold Hearts) our psychotic protagonist sets her sights on him and before long he’s hogtied in his basement getting drill, stabbed and all-round mutilated by the movie reference quoting nut-job. Movie references that span the gamut from Marathon Man to Happy Gilmore!

One slasher I refuse to get behind is Gregory Dark’s See No Evil. It was a good try, albeit one that never really came together. But that’s not stopping WWE Films from trying their hand at horror once again, this time with a survival horror story with some slasher elements.
We've already told you about No One Lives, but it turns out the presses might’ve been a bit premature with the previous casting update.
Bloody Disgusting is reporting that Adelaide Clemens (Silent Hill: Revelation) and Lee Tergesen (Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning) are the actual stars of No One Lives. It was previously stated that Alexis Dziena and Angus Macfadyen had been cast, although that appears to have been misinformation.
Clemens and Tergesen are joining Laura Ramsey (The Ruins), America Olivo (Neighbor), Luke Evans (The Raven) and WWE wrestler Brodus Clay in this horror flick scripted by David Cohen.

Director Rob Masciantonio who brought us the epic gorefest that was Neighbor has given us a heads up on what's next for him. He's announced his next project will be a short film called Fairyland and has plans to submit it to Sundance this summer.
Fairlyland deals with taking characters from myths and fables and puts them in a world where Soprano-types are real. There's a Facebook page set up for the short now so head over and check it out.
Personally I've read the script and it looks like a lot of twisty fun, especially at the end of course! There will be several Neighbor alumnus joining Masciantonio on this project including Pete Postiglione, Stink Fisherand Brea Bee with Josh Bender producing and you might even get to see a "certain geek" appear in it somewhere, who knows.

Earlier this week, the long awaited "Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark" finally set a date for opening night on Broadway. And apparently the show may have added another female lead as well.
According to Superhero Hype, actress and singer Olivo posted a message on her Facebook page that stated she was "In training for Spider-Man" while over on Twitter she posted a link to the news of the show's opening.
When told by another user on Facebook that she would make an excellent Black Cat, Olivo responded "Black Cat? Ohh, I like... Humph... I don't know the Black Cat character. Who is she?"
If Olivo is portraying one of the leading roles, there is a strong possibility that she may be the new female villain introduced within "Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark." Some of the earliest reports about the show listed the character's name as "Swiss Miss," while more recent...

When Robert Angelo Masciantonio sat down to write and then direct Neighbor I wonder if he knew he'd be introducing us to a new character that would go down in movie history as one of the most brutal, unapologetic, imaginative, and comedic slasher-types simply known as "The Girl", that's right a female people! Yes move over Jason, Freddy and Leatherface there's a new female moving in the neighborhood and she has her eye on your zippers!
America Olivo plays our title character to perfection. The Girl is as entertaining from scene one to the finale and never misses a beat or a pulse for that matter. She lures her prey in with her " neighborly"charm (no pun intended) and then Bang, it's uh-oh time!
Christian Campbell plays her "main" interest Don Carpenter and goes through more torture, pain and abuse than I've ever seen one person go through in a...

According to Alienbee.biz, “Neighbor makes Hostel and Saw look like 'Romper Room'...” While I don't agree with the quote outright, I'll agree that Neighbor is a depraved film that does little to hold back its brutality. Directed by Robert Angelo Masciantonio, it has the right formula for a classic horror/thriller, unfortunately, its execution proved to be full of gaping holes.
Neighbor stars actress America Olivo, who is billed as “the girl”. She introduces herself under several different aliases, but her true name is never revealed. She plays a psychotic serial killer who roams an upscale suburban neighborhood, killing at her whim. The film focuses on her torture of Don (Christian Campbell), along with the many others whom she victimizes throughout this 90 minute film.
The opening sequence fails to waste anytime in introducing the graphic brutality that is a key ingredient in Neighbor. The events itself are pretty disturbing,...

Hey everyone! Sorry I was not around last week I took a mini vacay but now I am back! I am sure you all had plenty to read with Comic-Con and all! Anyways, there's not too much coming out this week but here's a few for you!
Clash of the Titans
If he is to save the life of the beautiful Princess Andromeda (Alexa Davalos), the valiant Perseus (Sam Worthington) -- born to a god but raised as a man -- must lead a team of intrepid warriors on a quest to battle a host of powerful, beastly enemies. This sweeping fantasy epic, a remake of the 1981 hit, also stars Liam Neeson as Zeus, Ralph Fiennes as Hades, Danny Huston as Poseidon and Gemma Arterton as Io.
Starring: Sam Worthington, Alexa Davalos
Director: Louis Leterrier
This was not as good as the first one in my opinion. Worth a watch though.

Cinema Slaughter Horror Fest makes its blood drenched first year debut in April and May 2010, with a couple of brutal, grisly and intense horror films. Both screenings will be held at the Leammle Sunset 5, located at 8000 Sunset Blvd. in West Hollywood, CA.
Both directors will be on hand to discuss their films, as well as cast members and other special guests (Tba).
Emceeing the night is a notorious writer/director for the horror genre, one who has worked with both Dario Argento and Tobe Hooper — we don’t want to give away the surprise, but he will also bring a trailer for his new film, a remake of a horror classic.
Famous Monsters Of Filmland will be on hand for the evening, discussing our upcoming events and our all new revamped FM Online website!
Some friends also attending, include Girls And Corpses Magazine, who will be hosting a vendor table.

Writer, producer, director Steve Balderson’s genre-bending, tragicomedy Stuck! will be playing at the beautiful Egyptian Theatre this Wednesday, February 3rd at 7:30pm.
I implore anyone in love with genre cinema and genuinely unique, low-budget films, to check it out for the discussion following the feature with Karen Black, Mink Stole, Susan Traylor, Jane Wiedlin, Pleasant Gehman, Stacy Cunningham and director Steve Balderson, which should be a hoot.
If you’re looking for a satisfying pastiche of the “girls behind bars” sub-genre of exploitation, Stuck! delivers. Early examples of the genre, like Barbara Stanwyck’s 1933 potboiler Ladies They Talk About, were – like many pictures of the day – problem pictures, in that they aimed to expose social injustices and inadequacies in the justice system. But by the 1960’s, when the genre really came into its own with cult classics like Caged and 99 Women, women-in-prison movies began to slide towards sexploitation and,...

The next for director Nick Palumbo has an already impressive lineup of talent scheduled for this incredible sounding story of children lost in a land of horror. The Dp will be none other then Laurent Barès who shot not only Inside, but also Frontier(s) and the upcoming film La Meute among many others. Vincent J. Guastini, who's done makeup and special effects on such films as Requiem for a Dream and the upcoming Neighbor, will be designing and creating all the F/X for corpse. And the young Bella Thorne (has anyone seen any of her films?) will be starring. I was already sold with the storyline but the Dp clinched the deal.

Embodiment Of Evil Directed by Jose Mojica Marins *** 1/2 José Mojica Marins' demonically anticipated Zé do Caixão (Coffin Joe) comeback film is everything you could hope for. Embodiment cleverly explains Zé 's absence over the years by opening with the character being released from prison after serving decades of time for the crimes depicted in earlier films! Coffin Joe may now be in his 70s, but Zé's lifelong obsession to locate the perfect woman to continue his bloodline with has not faded in the slightest. Too schlocky, violent, corny, and shocking for Cannes, the 40 year long wait had audiences at Fantasia in a collective applause. Guaranteed to satisfy its fan base with stunning cinematography, special effects, and an assortment of clips from the earlier two movies; José Mojica Marins now 72 years old still commands the screen and with Coffin Joe he has crafted a true horror icon. Hopefully with the release of this film,...

- During the world premiere of writer/director Robert A. Masciantonio's Neighbor at Fantasia, more than a few attendees squirmed in their seats more than a few times, especially at a particular scene involving a swizzle stick and a certain member of the male anatomy that doesn't stand a chance of making it past the MPAA's film ratings board. All this is to say that while Neighbor as presented at the festival was a blissfully blood-drenched film, don't expect the same version when it actually gets released wide - which it most definitely deserves to be. Playboy covergirl America Olivo (the Friday the 13th remake) stars as 'The Girl', a ruthless killer who enters unsuspecting people's homes and savagely tortures and murders them, all while helping herself to the comforts of their suburban abodes. The focus of the story is on one particular instance in which she invades the

As North America’s largest genre film festival, Fantasia will once again make good on its promise to deliver diversity, innovation, entertainment, food for thought and a good dose of eccentric and biting humour.
Next is a message from Fantasia's Co-Director of International Programming, Mitch Davis, highlighting some of this year’s spotlights:

A decade after his well-received venture into the vampire genre, Cold Hearts, writer/director Robert A. Masciantonio is back with a decidedly more hardcore horror outing, Neighbor. The filmmaker sent along some exclusive and nasty photos (see ’em below) and info on the film, which will have its premiere at this summer’s Fantasia Film Festival in Montreal.
“Neighbor was shot in only 18 days in January and February of this year in cold Philadelphia and its suburbs,” Masciantonio tells Fango. “We had so much fun making this film, and having it debut at Fantasia is an absolute thrill. It’s going to be amazing seeing the finished product with the core audience! I hope they love our Girl as much as I do.”
Said antiheroine is played by America Olivo, who’s amassing quite a horror résumé with the Friday The 13th redux, Blood Wars and the upcoming Bitch Slap and The Last Resort.
