An homage to 80's slasher movies
jjturley6 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Warning -- Spoilers!

I went into this movie with high expectations since it had a good rating. Also, I like the Scottish Highlands. I am left sorely disappointed.

The acting is mostly okay, I guess, and the countryside is beautiful. I am sorry this is the only good I can really say.

There were far too many situation where people did things that made absolutely NO SENSE. Here we have two young American women hiking through desolate hills without cell phones. I grant that one of them had a hidden agenda... but the other so easily complied? Then when they know that a man is spying on them from a nearby hill, the woman pulls up her shirt and waves! The next day, they go to a pub and meet two strangers. They leave their beers unattended to get the drinks "roofed."

Later on, one woman points a gun at one of the bad guys while standing two feet in front of him - he can practically touch it! The man suggests that the woman check the corpse on the ground to see if there's a pulse... When she bends down, he snatches the gun. Big surprise!

There are myriad scenes where someone is pretty sure they had killed an adversary. They turn their back with relief only to have the "dead person" jump up to attack again.

There was an excessive amount of squirting blood in the fighting. People's faces were regularly covered. It was too much and a sad waste of tomato sauce.

There are serious timing problems. One example: When one guy draws a man out of his house, the woman is supposed to enter it to see if her friend is there. She goes in and walks around so slowly. She drops her coat on the floor before slowly climbing the stairs. Why not hurry it up? The man would likely return at any moment!

Finally, too many bizarre coincidences. The woman escaping from the bad guys spends a night alone and resumes hiking the next day. She passes the very cottage that the bad guys are living in and sees one of them on the back porch. He also sees her before going inside. Why didn't he chase her? Why didn't she run to get the police? But no. She approaches the cottage and spies on the man through the window. Perfect timing, since he gets stabbed by someone in the cottage!

This movie would have been MUCH more enjoyable if the characters were smarter. I get annoyed when I see someone does something unrealistic and dumb. I guess when it comes to slasher movies, common sense is not so common.

Worst fight scenes ever
ayameofazuma31 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Well, the story was semi interesting. But it's low budget so the acting is pretty bad. But the woman playing "Andrea" and the man playing "John" are some of the worst actors ever. I'm sorry I don't remember their real names, but after seeing this movie I never will. The fighting scenes are SO bad they are hilarious. And apparently there is a shotgun in existence that is completely and utterly silent when fired. These people all make the dumbest decisions ever. And although that's typical in horror movies, it was slightly infuriating here. The "twist" ending didn't explain much at all either. They never explained the connection to the two psychopath men. It partially seemed like they were in on it, yet they got in the way so how could they be?

Well done

Warning: Spoilers
When traveling across the Scottish Highlands, one-time friends Jess (Michaela Longden) and Andrea (Emma O'Hara) reconnect before they get separated after a night at a pub and a meet-up with Nate (director Nathan Shepka) and Tommy (Craig McEwan). Feeling something is off, she decides to go on ahead, but then realizes that she needs to go back for her friend. When she finds the corpse of Tommy and another girl - and no Andrea - she may be in even bigger trouble herself in this film from director Nathan Shepka and screenwriter Tom Joliffe.

If you liked And Soon the Darkness, you have an idea of what to expect here. There are some interesting twists and turns; nobody should be trusted. This movie is another example why I never look up old high school friends and tend to stay hidden deep inside my movie cave.

This is a movie that uses its low budget effectively and knows when to switch gears and really grab you. I had some fun with it. Here's hoping you do the same.

So bad it put me in a bad mood.
mr-bryan-smith8 December 2022
This is the worst movie I've ever seen, I'm pretty sure I made up more compelling and believable dialogue playing with my Star Wars figures when I 8 years old. The "acting" is slightly better than a first grade play and I'm only giving it that much credit because the actors were probably able to remember their lines. While watching this abomination I kept thinking to myself that this isn't how people talk or move because of how stiff everything is, nothing came off as having a natural flow, everything was just so forced. With most movies there is at least one character you like, not this one. Every character your supposed to empathize with or not have a feeling about one way or the other comes across as having stick permanently stuck up their ass. The sound is also god awful.

A seemingly unfinished horror that should not have been released
olivermarks28 October 2023
(Watched as part of an early press screening)

Although I sat through the whole film, I felt it was an unfinished film. Nothing about it was good enough for home entertainment. It felt like a student film, although a student film would be better.

The narrative idea had a decent amount of potential, but Nathan Shepka executed it poorly. The quality was horrifc, acting just as bad.

The film poster i'd seen (Michaela Longdon looking in the mirror) was decent, proper thriller-esque poster. But looking at the poster on IMDB told me enough about how the film would play out.

Give it a huge miss is my advice, harsh but justifiable.

LONG boring stupid and predictable
gustheaffen25 October 2022
There are less than 10 characters in this movie and all are ancillary except 5. Figure out the plot. Very poor acting. And just a ridiculous story too. I can't imagine ever leaving a friend in a bar with strange weird men and walking off into the country alone. This has way too high a rating and was one of the worst movies I've seen this year. It has a lot of ridiculous and silly dialogue on top of the poor acting. They also act like the women are far out alone in the country but you can see the road and a car going by. No attention to any detail on top of the poor plot. Very low budget and unwatchable.

Why does this movie have so many stars??

The only reason my friends and I kept watching after the first 10 minutes is because we thought it just might get better but NOPE!!!

It turned into a joke! The scenery was the best thing in this hot pile of garbage.

The people that made this movie and edited it and thought it was good enough to put in front of audiences should choke on their own vomit.

Acting= horrible Plot= horrible Scenery= awesome Script= horrible Action= horrible Special FX= horrible Acting= horrible (I know I said acting twice but it was actually so bad I had to say it again.)

My eyes and brain have cancer after watching this movie.

DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME!!

Contrived Swill
FJWWindsor8 May 2023
This is one of the worst movies I've seen in a long time. The plot is completely contrived and seems to be written by a writer whose goal was to introduce as many plot twists as he could and try to top the "wow factor" with each successive one. This made the film completely illogical. The acting was wooden and the fight scenes were completely unrealistic.

I've traveled internationally, and one of the most fundamental concepts anyone who's traveled overseas knows is research the culture and the particulars of where you are going. Here you have two female American women trekking through the Scottish countryside with barely a clue as to what they're doing. Separating in a small rural town where they know NO ONE is one of the most illogical things I can imagine.

Do yourself a favor and skip this one and save yourself one hour and forty-five minutes of your time!!!

Good fun for a very low budget effort
joshbertrammartin19 January 2024
People have got to remember that this is an extremely low budget B movie. It's not going to have Hollywood-style production, directing and acting. You can count the production staff listed at the end almost on both hands, with some of them (eg Nathan Shepka - writer, actor, producer, director) doing more than one role.

People have already pointed out the strengths and weaknesses. The scenery was great (but then it's hard to get that wrong in the Scottish Highlands!). The music deserves recognition too. Some of the actors were better than others and they all had their good moments and bad moments. I think you've got to be prepared for some weak acting in places and just live with it.

The plot deserves more recognition as well. Yes, it had a few plot holes, but the vast majority of movies do. Most movies require us to suspend disbelief in the occasional moment. However, otherwise the plot actually had some exciting and gripping moments, with a few twists, and we are kept on edge and kept guessing.

A serious fault in the movie is the sound production and foley. Sorry to whoever did it, but it was just awful. There were moments where the editor tried to style it out by overlaying music or skipping the 'sound' in order to avoid the bad effects. The dialogue volume was inconsistent in some areas. The directing could be stronger of course as well (but remember, low budget), like making sure actors playing dead actually try not to blatantly breathe or by at least trying to make fight scenes realistic. The moment where one of them brings a crowbar down "on someone" (over his head) repeatedly - at 1mph - was hysterical.

But I'm giving it some stars because I managed to watch the whole thing and had a few moments that kept me guessing and really kept me going. Some of the actors and production team certainly showed great potential. Just remember, if you watch it, that you've got to be prepared for a very low budget affair with average acting.

Bad acting, but a very interesting thriller
Jst-nl22 January 2024
From the first moment of the movie, you know that the acting isn't going to be great. But having said that, apart from the acting, I think it comes together. The scenery is nice, the shots are not special, but hey are definitely not bad, and I have to say the story is actually quite interesting.

If you are willing to forget the bad acting and breathing dead people, there are enough interesting things in this movie that makes it worth viewing.

It's totally not a Hollywood movie where there are clues scattered everywhere, and the low pace of the movie is a pleasant.

Even though I gave it a four it's worth viewing, if you can forgive the acting.

My apologies to the actors though. The were very good for their roles, and I'd like to see more of them.

Simmer, bubble, boil!
dustypepper16 July 2022
Two girls from America go hiking across the Scottish Highlands. Meanwhile two ne'er do wells are travelling across, robbing remote mansions and roofying local ladies. Of course both pairings will meet. Something about the immovable object meeting an unstoppable force? Starting with shades of American Werewolf without the werewolf, this then ventures into And Soon the Darkness meets Vanishing, before descending into a twist filled 90's cable thriller (in the best possible way). All it needed was Eric Roberts.

Despite a low budget, the film achieves its goals. A lot of micro budget cinema tends to feel very non-descript with their locations, often confining the action to a few cheap places and feeling like you could be anywhere. Not so here, as When Darkness Falls slowly builds, displaying sprawling Scottish backdrops (a rare abundance of drone shots which don't feel unnecessary) that are sparse and rugged. When Andrea disappears, Jess must find her in a landscape near devoid of people (and the few she meets are less than friendly). I won't say too much as the second act kicks off into a twisty turny pot boiler. Michaela Longden does a great job, as does Emma O'Hara. Director/producer/actor/editor/caterer? Nathan Shepka checks every role off with flying colours. The film looks great, the score is pleasingly Carpenter-esque, and despite the kind of rough edges that are unavoidable on something that was apparently shot for 25k (though looks substantially more), this really did entertain. The artwork and trailer intrigued me and I'm glad I took the punt.

A Pleasant Surprise.
Cinehunter200125 October 2022
I caught this on Roku, intrigued by the title and artwork. I was expecting something more horror-centered, but to my surprise this plays out as more of a mystery thriller (and engagingly so).

The locations look great. Everything looks barren and it suits the nature of a missing person thriller like this. It could probably have done with slicing 5-10 minutes off the run time, but it does slowly build up pretty well.

The final 20 minutes in particular, after, yep...darkness falls, is tense. Given the budget it's well made, engaging and the cast is decent. It's a little far fetched in places but I guess that's a pre-requisite for this type of B movie thriller. I just enjoy seeing something where everything is on screen, out on locations (and I'll watch most things shot in Scottish countryside). There's too many green screen films these days.

Well worth checking out.

How this didn't win a handful of Oscars, i'll never know.
iamtherobotman20 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Less than 5 minutes in and i'm already wondering why i'm going to punish myself for the next one and a half hours.

The opening dialogue between the Scots lad and the English lad was painful to the ears. It's obvious they got the Scots lad to slow his speech so that an international audience could understand him, as a result, this conversation between the two lacked any natural flow or even basic human emotion.

The following foot race is sair tae bare and this is all before the opening titles.

I don't mind that people have to start somewhere when it comes to making film and those initial films will tend to be poor quality and this certainly ticks those boxes. Why though, do so many films have to rely on stupid people making stupid decisions?

One part which amused me was when we see our two charming ladies walk into Wanlockhead, then moments later, they tell the two lovely lads that they're walking across the Highlands. They'll have one hell of a trek, as Wanlockhead is in Dumfries and Galloway in the South West of Scotland, the Highlands are several hundreds of miles further North.

When everything falls...or fails
orkneyislander18 January 2024
Gets one star for the scenery. Terrible acting. Fight scenes that were laughable. Plot lines and the actions of the cast were ridiculous. Those that were bludgeoned, shot or stabbed bounce back to life with more regularity than zombies. The scene towards the end has the blonde girl searching and wandering through a house in slow motion where the 'baddie' could come back at any time. If this was supposed to create tension it failed miserably and like the other actions in the movie made no sense at all. The pub barman was as unwelcoming and likeable as a dose of the flu. Which probably could be said for the entire cast. Not recommended viewing.

Just don't
elainagray21 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Honestly giving this film 2 star is generous. The opening scene with the two guys I genuinely thought meant the film was going to be a comedy. Zero acting skills, they delivered the lines like they were just reading them. And why when the girl ran out the house did she run into the wilderness? They were in a town and a guy was walking the dog over the road, why didn't she just run up to him? We gave it a bit longer and then switched it off after the next dialogue scene between the two girls which was the most unnatural untalented delivery of script I have almost ever heard (only eclipsed in awfulness by the opening scene). We switched off after 7 minutes. Save yourselves those 7 minutes. Do not bother.

Worst acting and lines ever !!!
markmacfarlane-2745118 January 2024
Omg do not waste your time on this movie if you don't want to be depressed and angry for the rest of your day knowing that the 2 women got paid well for acting badly in this so called trash of a movie.

Never in my life even for a horror movie have i seen such a bad plot and speeches.

I would love to know why imbd allowing there work colleagues to vote on this bad movie with good stars?

Many things i could point out bad with this movie but mainly the script was so bad it was laughable and acting from the worst possible way and like nothing like what stupid dustypepper wrote which was all lies.

Entertaining
bikingnirvana30 January 2024
The movie starts off quite interesting, a couple of foreign tourists are travelling through the highlands, while a couple of wrong uns are looking for victims. It's not long before they meet and you expect you know what's going to happen. It doesn't though. Things get a bit mad and it is quite funny at times, enough to keep the viewer entertained. Some of the twists are so crazy you can't help but laugh, but the actors are not bad to be honest, all of them have potential especially the Scottish guy. Some of the scenes could have been better but it is what it is and as it's quite memorable, I would recommend it.
