Every one of us has a bad day now and then. A day where we wish we could just throw up our hands and say, that's it. I've had enough. I want to do something else. Something better. Well this was just such a day for The Jetsons- George gets thoroughly chewed out at work by Mr. Spacely, Jane is sick to death of having to do housework or having to activate the machines that do it for her; on his way home from school, Elroy is right in the middle of a fight when the transport tube sends him right into the living room mid-insult, where Judy, having just been through another break-up, thinks it was aimed at her and it results in the two of them getting into a ridiculously childish round of name-calling. ("Great clothes, Elroy. designer diapers!" What the heck? "Maybe your boyfriends would last longer if you wore a mask"...gotta give the point to Elroy. Judy isn't ugly by any means, Elroy just gives the better snaps), so while Jane goes in to break them up, Astro tries to raid the food-a-rack-a-cycle, resulting in the thing blowing it's top and sending food everywhere. For some unforeseen reason, a creepy old lady seems to be watching them the entire time. George comes home to the mêlée and decrees they should all get out for a while. So while flying out in the middle of nowhere, they stop to help a kindly old woman (the creepy aforementioned one), and give her a lift to her planet. Her name is Grandma Ganymede and she's a caretaker of an exclusive resort called Fantasy Planet.
The family is soon introduced to the proprietor, Mr. Rocket, and his assistant, Teetoo, a two-headed alien who argued with itself. Now these two may look and even sound familiar. Maybe because this episode is a shout-out to the TV show Fantasy Island, which was a hit at the time...well actually it was canceled before this episode was even made, but anyway, Mr. Rocket says he can make their most desired fantasies come true. How much would you pay? Only under a hundred dollars...$99.95. So, the Jetsons are each hooked up to a machine to be transported within themselves. Each is given a stopwatch as an emergency abort; George is now president of Jetsons' Sprocketts and fulfills his life-long dream of firing Mr. Spacely; Jane becomes queen of some barren galaxy with three feet-kissers who will move heaven and earth for her; Elroy and Astro become Captain Zoom and his super dog. They thwart the stereotypically evil Dr. X from blowing up the planet. So the heroic Captain Zoom steals the detonator from the doctor, while the heroic dog cowers in a garbage can. Dr. X is incarcerated, but vows vengeance...don't they always? Judy meanwhile, is teen pop star of the galaxy with her own band: Judy Jetson and The Jetson Five...even though the only other members are 4 robot instruments. Sure these sound like great fantasies, right? Yeah, but where there's heaven, hell can't be too far off, for each of their fantasies soon becomes a nightmare as George realizes how demanding being a CEO can be, dramatic stock drops, mountains of paperwork; Jane's servants literally will not let her lift a finger. Feeling fed up with this fantasy, she pulls her stopwatch when a servant takes it and he, not Jane, is transported back...Let's hope he comes back before she has to take a bathroom break; Captain Zoom and Astro are keeping the galaxy safe, until the stalwart narrator informs them Dr. X has bonded out and will keep his promise for revenge. He does this by capturing our heroes and dangling them off a cliff; being the Queen of Pop seems like the life for Judy until she learns it would mean leaving behind her friends and family. Choosing them over fame, she decides she's had enough, so has the rest of the family, who simultaneously grab their stopwatches and teleport back to reality. They thank Mr. Rocket and Teetoo for a good time and decide they prefer their real lives to their fantasies, which in the long run, kinda sucked. But all is not sitting well with one family member: Rosie finds it very strange that Jane is happily cleaning, Elroy and Judy are not fighting over the TV, and George is gleefully and even helping to take insults from Mr. Spacely. She declares them all sick and the apartment quarantined. Ha ha. Oh, Rosie. Silly old robot.
Pretty good episode. The characters were a little off-model in this episode. Must have been a different animation studio. Well, if you're a fan of The Jetsons, a fan of Fantasy Island, you like vignettes, childishness and good ol' wacky cartoon calamity, Fantasy Planet is for you!
