Sex & Nudity

  • It is revealed in the film that a white man had sex with a black woman, resulting in a character's birth/real father.
  • A man mentions to another that all these girls want to dance with the other, suggesting which one he should choose. The man refuses.
  • Shirtless men are shown throughout the film on several occasions.

Violence & Gore

  • Frequent scenes of war-related violence, including several characters dying from gunshots, or other various methods of death.
  • A man is shot and there is blood on him.
  • A few slaves, presumably dead, are slung over horses and it is discussed.
  • A young man is attacked by several white characters, accurate for racial tension, and tries to fight his way out. He is dunked in water as well.
  • A character is slapped repeatedly as it is revealed he was accused of stealing someone else's watch.
  • Two boys get into a fistfight, one is kicked and there is several punches in the brief struggle.
  • There are a few major battles that occur, several explosions are implanted and go off, people are shot, and last of all, there is hand-to-hand combat involved as well. The scenes are mostly brief.
  • Wounded men are slumped in a hospital with a little blood on them; one tries to kill a boy but is shot again and dies.
  • A house is burned and the starters of the fire are taken prisoner. One is forced to shoot another but refrains from doing so.
  • Men escape from a prison, there is a brief struggle with punching and hitting when the people are enacting their escape.
  • Murder and violence is frequently discussed, as it is integral to the subject matter (including a man talking about stabbing others for fun).

Profanity

  • Several uses of racial epithets, involving "boy" "Negro" and "colored", all used very frequently for the accuracy of its time. No other language I could think of.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • A few men smoke cigars in one scene.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • The racial tensions, though accurate, are also very upsetting for younger viewers to watch.
  • Several central characters die in battle/other various ways. Their deaths could be unexpected at times.
  • The movie has an uneasy feeling to it, as well as a constant thrill of suspense.

Spoilers

The Parents Guide items below may give away important plot points.

Violence & Gore

  • A man is whipped and this scene is fairly intense, the man dies of his wounds, it could be very disturbing.
  • Three sharp-shooters are shot and killed in one intense moment, however, a central character dies in the scene (some blood shown).
  • At the very end, there is a brief battle with a few instances of shooting. However, the main character's "real" father dies when he is shot. The scene may be very upsetting to watch.
