Simon Curtis has lined up a quartet of stars for upcoming comedy “Encore” from “Twilight” banner Temple Hill Entertainment.
The film — announced by Protagonist Pictures, which is launching worldwide sales ahead of Cannes — will reunite eight-time Oscar nominee Glenn Close with Oscar winner Jeremy Irons 34 years after their critically acclaimed hit “Reversal of Fortune.” Henry Winkler and Don Johnson round out the ensemble cast.
Written by Academy Award nominee Robert Nelson Jacobs (“Chocolat”), “Encore” follows a group of retired actors as they attempt to reignite their passion for life. Former Broadway icons Marie (Close) and Nigel (Irons) are new residents of a retirement home, where they discover a community of forgotten talents. Motivated to revive Nigel’s passion for theater and embrace this new chapter in their life, Marie decides to stage a production with the residents, pulling everyone out of their past and into their present. Downton Abbey is getting a “final” chapter, according to Imelda Staunton.
The actress, who played Queen Mary’s lady-in-waiting Lady Maud Bagshaw in the first two films, has confirmed reports that a third movie is in the works.
Asked about Downton Abbey rumors by BBC Radio 2 breakfast show host Zoe Ball, Staunton said: “There will be the final film – there you go.”
Ball joked that she hoped Staunton was not going to get into trouble for the revelation, to which the actress replied: “I don’t care.”
Julian Fellowes’ wildly successful period drama started life as a television series on ITV in 2011. It went on to spawn six seasons and two movies, helping put British drama on the map internationally.
Staunton’s comments followed a report in The Sun on Wednesday, which claimed that the third movie will film at Highclere Castle over the summer and premiere next year.

“Sequel September” enters its second weekend with more studios hoping that nostalgia will rule out for moviegoers. This week welcomes “The Nun II” and “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3” to theaters, and we’re predicting they could have very different results. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.

There’s no doubt now that “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” is one of the best received superhero movies to hit theaters since they reopened, and its stronger-than-expected second weekend lends itself to some interesting box office comparisons to last year’s May Marvel film, “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.”
A year ago, “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” came into theaters with white-hot momentum from “Spider-Man: No Way Home” and earned the biggest opening weekend of the year with $187.4 million. But hardcore fans who bought a ticket that weekend weren’t as enthused as they were with “No Way Home,” and on the film’s second weekend, it slipped 67% to a $61.7 million second weekend total.
“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” has seen somewhat of a reverse trend. Whether it’s because of the weak reception to recent Marvel films or its self-contained nature, “Guardians Vol.

The European box office continues to bounce back, but theatrical revenues are still a ways from their pre-pandemic peak.
According to official figures released by European Audiovisual Observatory on Thursday, gross box office receipts across the European Union and the U.K. were up 70 percent in 2022 to $5.5 billion (€5.07 billion), with an additional 250 million tickets sold, bringing total attendance figures to 657 million. The return of the studio blockbusters were the main drivers of the theatrical resurgence. Top Gun: Maverick, Avatar: The Way of Water, and Minions: The Rise of Gru were the top films across Europe last year, selling 34.4 million, 30.6 million, and 30.2 million tickets respectively.
Both revenue and attendance figures, however, are still well below those seen before the Covid pandemic. 2022 ticket sales were just 67 percent of the admission averages recorded between 2017 and 2019. The gross box office was down 29 percent from the 2017-2019 average.

Inward investment into film and high-end television (Hetv) in the U.K. during 2022 reached a record height of £6.27 billion (7.72 billion), statistics from the BFI reveal.
This is the highest ever reported figure and is £1.83 billion higher than for the pre-pandemic year 2019.
Some 69 of the £6.27 billion spend was contributed by Hetv production with £4.30 billion, with feature film production contributing £1.97 billion.
However, spend on independent U.K. filmmaking showed a downturn with £174 million, a 31 decrease on 2021. On the other hand, coproductions with independent producers saw a 3 increase in spend with £59 million.
Of the total £4.29 billion Hetv production spend: inward investment shows contributed £3.62 billion (84 of total Hetv spend and a 3 decrease on 2022); domestic U.K. shows accounted for £632.7 million (15 of total Hetv spend and a 4 decrease on 2021) ; and coproduction spend was £36.5 million (less than 1 of total spend but a near three-fold increase on 2022).

Disney/20th Century’s “Avatar: The Way of Water” maintains its No. 1 spot at the box office this Martin Luther King Jr. weekend with 31 million in its fifth weekend and is expected to extend that total to 39 million over four days to bring its domestic cume to 570 million.
Through Sunday, the film will have a total of 1.89 billion with a 3-day global weekend total of 119 million. With Monday’s domestic grosses, “Avatar 2” will pass the 1.9 billion mark, putting it on the threshold of passing the 1.91 billion of “Spider-Man: No Way Home” and becoming the highest-grossing film of the pandemic era.
Behind it, Universal’s “M3GAN” and “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” are both showing strong numbers. “M3GAN,” an Atomic Monster/Blumhouse co-production, has only dropped 41 from its 30.4 million opening weekend for a 17.9 million 3-day/21.2 million 4-day second weekend. With endless talk about IP and franchises taking over theaters to attract young audiences, something often gets overlooked: the continuing box office power of adults, and the potential of franchises made for them.
The 35-and-older crowd fueled some of 2022’s biggest hits.
According to Comscore, they comprised 54 of domestic ticket buyers for the year’s biggest success by far, the 719 million-grossing sequel “Top Gun: Maverick,” along with 57 of the audience for the 151 million-winning biopic “Elvis” and half the turnout for the 67.1 million-earning actioner “The Woman King.” All three were AFI Awards Movie of the Year winners and earned other top nominations, plus a Golden Globe win for “Elvis” star Austin Butler.
Several adult-driven hits released just before the pandemic — like 2019’s best picture Oscar winner “Parasite” and “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood” (75 were 35-plus from its 61.7 million take) — show the potential for artier fare making a comeback and the promise of adult franchises.

Claire Danes has a lot to celebrate during her night at the Golden Globes on Tuesday, Jan. 10. The occasion marked her first public appearance since news broke on Jan. 9 that she and husband Hugh Dancy are expecting their third child. Danes, who's nominated at the ceremony for her role in FX's "Fleishman Is in Trouble," glowed in a sparkling white dress that showed her small baby bump as she posed on the carpet.
Danes and Dancy are parents to two children: Cyrus, 10, and Rowan, 4. The pair met back in 2006 on the set of the movie "Evening" and married three years later, in 2009. They live primarily in New York's West Village and are often spotted out and about with their family like average New Yorkers.
This year, Danes's Globes nomination marks the sixth time she's been nominated at the ceremony. She's won a staggering four times before: in 1995 for "My So-Called Life,...

Exclusive: Once again, working under the Writers Guild’s restrictive rules for inclusion among nominees for the WGA Awards for Best Original Screenplay and Best Adapted Screenplay, several leading Oscar-contending screenplays are Awol on the official WGA ballot sent to eligible voting members Monday morning.
This is an annual occurrence as, unlike other guild competitions including DGA, SAG and PGA, the WGA remains firm in its golden rule of eligibility for its top film honors: The movie must have been written under the WGA Mba or under a bona fide collective bargaining agreement of various international WGA-affiliated organizations.
Thus such hot Oscar and BAFTA prospects as Martin McDonagh’s The Banshees of Inisherin, Cannes Palme d’Or winner Ruben Östlund’s Triangle of Sadness and many more did not even make the starting gate for WGA.
In the Original Screenplay category, BAFTA just last week longlisted Banshees and Triangle of Sadness...

The 2022 U.K. and Ireland box office experienced a major increase from the two pandemic-hit years of 2021 and 2020, but still lagged significantly behind pre-covid levels.
According to newly released figures from Comscore, total figures topped £978 million (1.18 billion) last year, up a dramatic 64 percent on 2021’s total of 597 million (720 million). However, the box office is yet to reach the £1.3 billion (1.57 billion) that it surpassed in each of the five years up to 2019. Comscore suggests a full recovery will be reached by 2024.
“While there remain challenges ahead, 2022 represented for our members a significant further step on the road to recovery after the unprecedented challenges of the pandemic,” said Phil Clapp, chief executive of the UK Cinema Association. “The response of audiences to a broad range of titles, the support of distribution colleagues and the strong slate already in prospect for 2023 and beyond mean that we can all look to the future with renewed confidence.

Total box office revenue across the U.K. and Ireland in 2022 was £978. 5 million (1.17 billion), an increase of 64 versus 2021’s total of £597 million (719.8 million), according to Comscore Movies’ review of the year.
Prior to the pandemic, annual box office in the territory had exceeded £1.3 billion in each of the five years up to and including 2019. The review anticipates a full recovery by 2024.
A total of 911 new titles were released theatrically in 2022, up from 503 in 2021 and almost returning to the peak of 938 in 2019. However, there remains a marked reduction in blockbuster releases due to production delays, the review notes. 2019 saw 186 ‘saturation’ releases i.e. films opening in 250+ cinemas, which dropped in 2022 to 135. As the average revenue for each saturation release was £6.4 million in 2022 and £6.9 million in 2019, the review estimates that a return to 2019 levels of saturation releases could add £325–£350 million to annual box office totals.

The holidays are here, Oscar voters. What are you going to watch?
At this point in the calendar, the answer could almost be “everything” – but maybe not everywhere, and definitely not all at once. The Academy Screening Room, the members-only portal where studios can place their films to be viewed by voters, has 178 films as of the beginning of Christmas week, including every major Best Picture contender except for a pair of three-hour epics only recently unveiled, Damien Chazelle’s “Babylon” and James Cameron’s “Avatar: The Way of Water.”
Those films, which beg to be seen on the largest and loudest screen possible, have yet to be added to the Academy Screening Room, a placement that costs 20,000 (albeit with a discount available to lower-budget productions). But while the Asr got off to a slow start this year, the other contenders are all now available for members to view, even...

On opening night in April, 1964, scores of police hemmed in crowds who were as eager to catch a glimpse of Taylor entering the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre as they were to see her husband as the depressed Dane.

Peacock has landed the rights to stream “The Independent,” a political thriller that stars John Cena, “Succession’s” Brian Cox, Ann Dowd (“The Handmaid’s Tale”), and Jodie Turner-Smith (“Queen & Slim”). The film from Relativity Media and director Amy Rice will skip theaters and stream exclusively on Peacock beginning next week on November 2, just ahead of midterm elections.

Turner-Smith’s character teams up with a legendary journalist (Cox) to unravel the political conspiracy surrounding the election.

Warner Bros./DC’s “Black Adam” has earned the biggest opening weekend the box office has seen since “Thor: Love and Thunder” more than three months ago, taking a 67 million launch from 4,401 theaters domestically in addition to 73 million overseas for a 140 million global opening.
That figure tops the 60 million opening that star Dwayne Johnson posted with the “Fast & Furious” spinoff “Hobbs & Shaw” in August 2019 and is consistent with the 67 million opening that Jason Momoa’s “Aquaman” earned in December 2018. It is also closer to the 70 million projections that independent trackers initially posted before lowering them to 60 million shortly before release.
Though it is modest compared to 100 million-plus openings that superhero films like “Love and Thunder” and Warner/DC’s “The Batman” have earned, it is a positive result for Warner Bros. at a time when it is facing a slew of headlines over widespread layoffs and spending cuts...

Warner Bros./DC’s “Black Adam” is meeting box office expectations with a solid 26.8 million opening day from 4,402 locations, as Dwayne Johnson’s DC debut is now projected for a 62 million opening.
That’s a couple steps above the 60 million pre-release projections set by both Warner Bros. and independent trackers, a figure that was also achieved by Johnson’s “Fast & Furious” spinoff “Hobbs & Shaw” in August 2019. Compared to other DC films, “Black Adam” is opening ahead of the 53.5 million launch of “Shazam!” in April 2019 and a few million below the 67 million opening of “Aquaman” in December 2018.
“Black Adam” has gotten weak reviews from the critics with a 41 Rotten Tomatoes score, but the film’s long-term fate was always going to come down to how much hardcore fans of Johnson and DC embraced it. On that front, early audience metrics are mixed as the film earned a B+ on CinemaScore.
