Your expectations are wrong.
dmunk200021 May 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I've read reviews of THT for a couple of seasons and I hear so much negativity about it being slow, the June face close-ups, it's not how I was hoping the reunion would go between Luke and June, and so on and so forth.

I really believe that people have developed a certain expectation of how shows should go and make them feel (e.g. Action, good guys win, hurry along the pace, happy ending) yet THT is not that show. It's unconventional, it breaks all the story arc norms of television dramas, it's a slow burn, etc.

For this reason, either don't watch the show because it isn't intended to be conventional and will continue to frustrate you OR accept something completely new and appreciate it for what it is...which I believe is brilliant. Took me a while to get there but now I get it, accept it, embrace it, and love it.

This episode could have been 20 minutes
Pbwhy19 May 2021
It was an intense episode but it could have taken half as long. There was so many unnecessary zoom in shots of June's face that is getting repetitive.

Salient Segway into the Second Half of the Season
aaronwjschuett19 May 2021
Warning: Spoilers
A striking way to change direction for the second half of season four. Seeing Moira's face as she simply said "June?" in last week's cliffhanging episode brought forth the waterworks and I was expecting this episode to continue with the same level of intensity. However, I was shocked to see that it did not. I am not disappointed with the episode, besides the fact that I feel I am robbed of ten to twenty minutes, being that the episode is only 40 minutes. Looking at the positive, I am extremely relieved to see June finally arriving in Canada. Last season it made sense keeping June's storyline in Gilead, but I am glad to see that the writers have rescued her to Canada. My only negative thought on the episode is that Janine is still missing. All I want to say is that she better not be dead. She is a beacon of hope in this series and the whole episode I was kind of hoping that June would go back to find her, yet still make it out of Gilead. Though, my wishful thinking is only that, a wish unfulfilled and disconnected from the story's narrative. I have faith Janine will be back to grace us with her kindred spirit. Here is to the remaining four episodes which will be nothing short of jaw-dropping television history.

such an INTENSE episode
leilani-abeyta2819 May 2021
I could write a whole ESSAY right now, but all i'll say is that this episode carried so much weight & emotion, and the direction, writing, acting were 10/10.

I'll be honest, i had a good cry throughout the story.. it makes you really feel and experience the characters' emotions

-Only negative is that i wish it it was a longer episode :( i can't wait for next week.

The Handmaid's Tale delivers another epic slow burn
singtheblues1419 May 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I'm just going to say this is one of the most compelling episodes of tv I've ever watched. I was literally on the edge of my seat and found I was holding my breath and tensing up at points.

What THT has always done exceptionally well is deliver the slow burn. This show moves slowly more often than not, and the episodes that move the slowest usually have the biggest arc / most growth for June. I'm glad an episode of this magnitude was coloured in with all of the detail that it was. When I look at the initial reactions to this episode, I see a lot of people who are annoyed that such a big moment was delivered without much action, and I kind of wonder why those people even still watch this show because it's fundamentally not about that. (Hey, just my two cents!)

The best storytelling shows rather than tells, and this episode overdelivered in every way to that point.

June finally being free of Gilead is something we've been working toward since episode 1, and I think Bruce Miller was bold to do it in the middle of a season (but that also made it more compelling because it felt like something was definitely going to go wrong and I was waiting for the other shoe to drop the entire time).

But in leaving without Hannah, June has failed. Her entire mission was getting Hannah out. I think had we NOT seen June so completely destroyed and conflicted over choosing to leave, which she has actively chosen NOT to do several times at this point, it would've felt false. This time was different because Moira and ONLY Moira could give her the brass tax on being able to do more good from Canada at this point (I truly believe she would've convinced any other character she should stay).

And that final scene watching June walk down the gangway from overhead then come down to settle on her face as she completely stopped at the end before taking a long pause and finally choosing to take the step onto Canadian land... heck yes. Beautiful shot, and I was literally holding my breath without realising it until Elisabeth Moss exhaled.

What all of the actors have always done so well is move the story along without saying a word. This episode did that particularly well. The writing, direction, editing, and music were all incredible.

If anything felt like it was lacking, it was potentially the gorgeous signature lighting THT usually has. But the storytelling was so well done, I really don't care. Also yes, we kind of got robbed of the normal 50-60 minutes of running time, but I think given the content, it was edited to the appropriate length.

Overall, I come back to: I found this episode to be super compelling. And I think we should be prepared to deal with a broken hero through the rest of the season, because I can't imagine the conflict and failure June felt throughout this episode is going anyway any time soon. Really excited to see where the rest of the season is going and how the chips will fall based on the actions of all of the characters in this episode.

I unlike some people's like the zoom in on June's face 🤣🤣 She was going through it this episode, and it really showed the pain she was going through. Haven't cried in a while and my friend and I both cried this episode! Loved it!

GILEAD is getting sloppy

So easy to pass by the fiercest custom patrols in the world. No manifest with very single NGO member? This season has been all June closeups, superficial dramas and plot holes.

Why only 40 minutes in this ep? With 15-20 minutes, the show could have kept the Cmdr Lawrence / Cmdr Nick / Luke / Emily plotlines going. Keep those going parallel to June.

What was Luke doing all this time?
deniska015 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Plot holes:

  • It's seems ignored by everyone the fact that even June's best friend bent backwards, went back to Gilead to find June, while her own husband socialising at charity events in Canada. I mean what kind of loving husband is that?? And why wasn't he doing anything either to save June or his daughter. Being "concerned"?

  • While Moira being super brave, going back to Gilead to find June, why wasn't she momentarily arrested for escaping Gilead on her re-entry. I mean Moira's face was plastered all over the news after her rescue from Gilead and during her volunteering and rescue work. I suppose Gilead tracing system isn't as sophisticated and they don't have intelligence service, which pose a question how this country even exist.

  • In the moment when June froze while was asked questions by Gilead border control I really wanted to punch her.

  • June's actions are totally inconsistent, first she attempts to leave Gilead then refuses because of her daughter, then she is doing it all over again and both times without any plan.

  • Everytime the camera is focusing on June's angry face you would expect her to act fiercely and smart. But it's always just the face and no action. In a way showing not very flattering feminine side, a lot of emotions and little logic.

Wow what an episode!
winstonsmith_8425 May 2021
Wow what an episode that was! This season has always been leaving me wondering where things will really go. I definitely didn't know what to expect but what happened was definitely big. Perhaps the biggest thing yet. It was quite intense emotionally the whole time, not knowing what would happen. I kept wondering if June would flee, turn herself in, would they catch her? Was literally on the edge of my seat. The doubt. The love. The flashbacks actually helped this episode out a lot and filled it in. But I'm so happy for June. She is tough as nails eh. Glad she is where she is and I'm curious what the story will do from here and where it will go. I honestly have no idea and that's why it's exciting....

Hopefully June not wanting to leave Gilead is over.
the_hawk829 May 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I get it she didn't want to leave her daughter. Lightning only will strike so many times and she needed to poop or get off the pot. "Will she or won't she" can only care the story for so long.

The episode was oddly too long and too short. Lots of filler and only a small amount for the long-expected reunion.

This episode is a microcosm of this whole season. Too slow. Lots of zooming in and pondering. Little movement of the story forward. I am not expecting constant action. I don't want that from this show, but they need to have something happen.

Still got it
cmarlborough4 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I really shouldn't read reviews because the haters make me angry! This one was a really good one- everything that June did was understandable. She can't fathom leaving when Janine and Hannah aren't safe. And the reunion with her husband was so moving- as a mother my first thought would be to apologise for failing to save my daughter- very well acted. Love Elizabeth Moss. Can't wait for the next series which presumably picks up where the second book starts.

JANINE BETTER NOT BE DEAD !!
jennfinn20 May 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I'm gonna be so mad if poor Janine is dead and that will be yet another dead body to add to June's growing list. If I were Moira I would've left June there especially when she said Moira manipulated her to get her on the boat.

I find it hard to believe that Moira wouldn't know the ship would be inspected. Didn't Gilead check it before it docked to make sure the Canadians weren't supplying the rebels with weapons ??

Are we to believe this was Moira's first mission and on that first mission she just so happened to run into June who's supposed to be in Boston ?? The writers are really asking viewers to suspend their disbelief and be ignorant. Although this episode was only forty minutes it was still 20 minutes too long. June is so obsessed with Hannah, a child who doesn't even remember her (which is complete BS) and is terrified of her yet she didn't even ask about Nicole until Moira mentioned her.

The flashbacks were completely unnecessary and all they achieved was to remind me that Luke is a cheating scumbag and June is a home wrecker. If I were Moira I would cut all ties with both June and Luke and move on with my life because she's honestly much better without them.

This season nothing happens....
jamisonjohn20 May 2021
I love The Handmaid's Tale. The story, the acting, the directing, the cinematography, everything is done with great care to be perfect. This season, however, has been nothing but long shots of June, teary eyed, just standing there, doing nothing. LOOOOOONNNGGG shots to waste time. A lot of NOTHING is happening. I fear the writing has become so thin that they must use camera time to fill in the missing gaps of dialogue.

Not a great episode unfortunately.
e_s_reyne20 May 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The only thing that mattered in this episode was seeing June and Luke reconnect and it was the most underwhelming and insignificant reunion I've ever seen. How many years have they been apart? How long have they survived their horrors only holding onto the hope of being reunited?

The flashbacks in the episode took away from it even more because we haven't seen them together in so long that we were dying for the reunion to be sweet, even conflicted (cause of Nick). However, because we got to see them together in the pre-gilead flashbacks leading up to their reunion, it just wasn't good and seeing them together again wasn't special.

Good episode but rather disappointing.
hassansjuf26 May 2021
Warning: Spoilers
After the outsanding first episodes, this episode is kinda disappointing. The reunion that we've been waiting for since season 1 didn't meet our expectations. The flashback scenes were boring and big waste of the episode's time it could've been way shorter. But all in all its not that bad.

Hopefully the next episodes are better.

Love this show.

Shifting Tides
badeclerck12 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Episode six of the fourth season of The Handmaid's Tale presents a mixed bag of emotions for viewers, as it both introduces new narrative avenues while also pulling us away from the unexplored depths of Gilead. Despite this, the episode manages to deliver poignant moments and significant character development.

One of the highlights of the episode is the series of flashbacks focusing on June's past, from her days living with Moira to her transition into a life with Luke, culminating in the pivotal moment when she discovers her pregnancy with Hannah. These flashbacks offer essential insights into June's journey, shedding light on previously unexplored facets of her character.

The present-day reunion between June and Moira is emotionally charged, particularly as June grapples with disbelief upon encountering Moira. Her initial denial gives way to a desperate determination to remain with Moira, fueled by the fear of returning to Gilead. However, tensions arise when Oona, the boat's captain, considers turning June over to the authorities during an impending inspection. The rift caused by Moira's decision to protect June strains her relationship with Oona, raising questions about the sacrifices made in the pursuit of moral duty.

June's internal struggle intensifies upon reaching Canada, where she is consumed by guilt and fear over her perceived failure to protect Hannah. Despite Luke's attempts to reassure her, June grapples with feelings of inadequacy and abandonment. These moments of vulnerability humanize June's character, showcasing the emotional toll of her experiences within Gilead.

While the episode sets the stage for new narrative possibilities, it also hints at a potential stagnation in the series' overarching storyline. The shift away from the insurrectionist movements and the ongoing war in Gilead leaves some viewers yearning for deeper exploration of these themes, which have been central to the series since its inception.

In conclusion, episode six of The Handmaid's Tale offers both promise and uncertainty as it navigates the complexities of June's journey. While it opens doors to new storylines, it also leaves lingering questions about the direction of the series. As viewers await further developments, they are left to ponder the implications of June's choices and the challenges that lie ahead in her quest for redemption and justice.
