"Did somebody say cheese!?!" Warning: Spoilers
This is totally one of my favourite Ren and Stimpy's ever, I just love it a lot because I find it to be one of the most consistently funny, with tons of eye-catching laugh out loud visual gags as well as numerous exquisitely demented expressions from Ren, who in this story suffers his best mental breakdown yet when he arrives home from what by the look of it, has been a day from hell, with bloodshot twitching eyes, and an especially dimwitted Stimpy, and he soon snaps after scorching his tongue on a burned chicken dinner and being given curdled milk to cool it off - I love how when he storms off after spitting it out, he leaves a little puff of stress and stubble in the air! - and finally cracking and leaving to live the life of a hermit forever after slicing off the bottom half of his face with a wrecked straight razor that Stimpy was using as a hammer, and trapping his foot in an accordion! It's an hysterically put together scene that is just animated comedy gold if you're a fan of this show. There are some really bizarre touches to it, like how the duo's home in this one very much appears to be a dead upside-down cow, with its butt as the door, and how they keep playing a mellow guitar rendition of "Oh Lord Cumbaya" throughout that is so weirdly charming! It tickles me how much Ren looks like a terrorist when he's all scraggly and has a beard. And when he moves the rock and finds an ancient corpse underneath and declares "A mummified bog-man!", as a kid I always thought he said bug-man! There's a tiny part of it where things get so atmospheric and downright disturbing for a moment when Ren begins to hallucinate that the skin's melting off his hands and when he looks at the mummy and sees his own face on it for a second, and for some reason that seriously gives me the creeps, no joke! I love the way I actually find it a little moving when Ren realises that despite how much he drives him crazy, he does miss Stimpy as he unintentionally crafts a Stimpy lookalike out of a pile of bat guano, while back at the cow Stimpy creates a makeshift Ren out of his own earwax. And then after Ren gets booted out of his hermit cave for breaking the rules of being a hermit(?) and returns home to discover Stimpy in cowgirl drag the two hug and atop their shoulders their doppelgangers of wax and s**t do likewise and although it's warped and done Ren and Stimpy style, it is still a nice, sweet and uplifting little ending! Love it, it's magic, later. "Somebody dial 991!!!"
