We must be grateful to Ajay Devgn for bringing an Aviation Thriller into the scene
SoumikBanerjee199629 May 2022
Runway 34 feels like an amalgamation of two different films with two distinctive approaches; while the first half of the film as an out and out aviation thriller brings forth a palpable screenplay that elevates the tension and the uncertainty, the second half on the other hand played more like a conventional courtroom drama dissecting on the unfortunate tragedy.

If I were, to sum up, my personal experience in a few words, I would say the first half is magnificent in every sense. The way the whole thing has been set up, how both the screenplay and the narrative make use of the surroundings to uplift the anxiety; it's exceptional, out of this world! And I'm not even exaggerating, the initial half of this film alone set a pretty good example of how aviation stories must be written and carried out, and that too in an effective manner.

As far as the latter half is concerned, it is mostly dialogue-oriented with little to no room for elements of suspense or thrill. However, what makes this comparatively timid and uneventful part click is the performances. Both Mr. Bachchan and Mr. Devgn had performed to their respective capabilities. So did Rakul Preet Singh; speaking of which, this might be her best work up until now!

So is this a perfect film? No, but this is an all-important endeavor nonetheless that will play a decisive role in what's to come in the future. It has the power to shape and reform the genre as well as to aspire to the next generation of filmmakers who might wanna do films on such challenging themes. And for that, we must thank and be grateful to Mr. Devgn who as the producer/director of this film has taken all the necessary steps and risks and spared no expenses to turn his vision and notions into reality. Kudos to the team behind the Visual Effects too, as they have demonstrated some stunning imageries.

P. S. That whole landing sequence with the song "The Fall" (by Jasleen Royal) playing in the background, was an unreal exhibition of cinematic excellence and dexterity. Goosebumps were all over my body!

Runway 34 SULLIFIED by Devgn in the best possible way!
ReelShahid6 June 2022
I wasn't expecting an Indian version of "Sully", but even if it is, it is really a good one. A benchmark for aviation thriller in Bollywood and also a very risky venture that paid well in the end.

This was something that I had been hoping from Ajay Devgn for quite a while. Terrific piece of work!

A good movie, except Rakul Preet acting
faisalfaves31 May 2022
Movie is really great, interval is mind blowing, but climax is a little low. Everyone's acted so good except Rakul preet, her acting and emotional tears doesn't make sense. And if pilots like her take care of flights then I am not gonna fly :). Ajay's acting is amazing, and his direction is really good. VFX is mind blowing. I'll rate it 8.5/10. A must watch.

Good Film!
vengeance2030 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
So, I've came back after watching this film & have to say it was pretty good.

The film is inspired by true incidents after an incident involving Captain Vikrant Khanna, who tries to land a plane on the morning of the 17th August 2015 during stormy conditions. He succeeds in doing so, but an inquiry is launched which could determine his career as a pilot for good.

I found the film to be pretty good, while lengthy & lethargic in the second half (but was still good & interesting), the first half was ace & focused on the actual incident itself. The lateral half is the inquiry that is launched against the pilot & his future career. While the lateral was good & interesting, it did somewhat drag a bit, the first part was pretty intense & suspenseful. The acting was good as with the action & drama. The films pacing is off in areas & great in others at 2 hours & 18 minutes.

Overall, it's pretty good & heavily reminded me of Flight with Denzel Washington in.

7/10.

Not sure how accurately the actual incident was depicted, but as a movie " Runway 34 rocks , or maybe I should say aims for the sky and actually reaches it "

Warning: Spoilers
" Runway 34 " is a smart , intelligent thriller. Ajay Devgun is excellent , both as the leading actor and director of this plane -thriller , as I like to call it. The supporting cast , which includes Amitabh Bachchan , Boman Irani , Rakul Preet Singh , and so many others , is also effective. Of course , as usual , there are a lot of haters out there , which includes lovers of cliched romantic movies , pot - boiler masala movies , and some hidden agenda people.

Don't let them get inside your heads. If you love a good thriller movie , then here it is in the form of " Runway 34 ". Once again Ajay Devgun proves that he can give tough competition to all the top notch directors when it comes to directing a good movie. Ajay is very creative as a movie director , and he has used plot twists and elements of mystery and intrigue very well. The editing is also okay. Dialogues are well constructed , especially the ones between Ajay and Amitabh Bachchan. I highly recommend this movie to everyone.

Less imaginative second half
witra_as3 May 2022
Less imaginative aviation courtroom drama brought down gripping airborne events in first half, mainly powered by vivid cinematography and great visual effects. Despite occasionally rough direction, Devgn as lead actor made pleasant landing to please his audience.

Would've been great if it wasn't dealing with such a critical and technical topic
sumi-mishra-7891 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Some drama is expected. But movie just ended up being illogical. Felt like different people wrote the movie in parts and didn't tell each other what the story is going to be.

Initial plots that were added but not explored:
  • Pounds vs kg fiasco while fuelling the plane.

  • Pilot looking into the alcohol section and going to the restroom immediately
  • Amitabh bachchan's character being hyped up as being detail oriented and not missing anything

Since it's based on a true story, can't help but add that they've made so many unnecessary complications that they just didn't deal with in the plot.

Example: Weather is bad, fuel is less, pilot choosing a different runway with unfavorable wind patterns.

It was a technical investigation with everyone from the industry. Bachchan's character focused on the alcohol aspect, partying, drinking on flight (All anticlimactic)

But they failed to question him on major faulty decisions like why he made multiple attempts at kochi and didn't divert to Bangalore. Not to mention the whole him remembering the runway aspect even though the plane he flew was nowhere close to this size.

Also, even as a layman it's obvious that choosing and knowing a runway is not as important as wind directions. The runway he chose had strong wings in the same direction as the plane, so the plane obviously overshot the runway.

Some things were sooo damn unbearable. The "Jalaya toh nahi" dialogue. The "photographic memory" and the investigator using unnecessarily complex Hindi words and then translating or just translating simple sentences.

Worse aspect was them making the pilot female and just make it such a weak character. No pilot in that position will have that type of personality. They just showed her as weak, crying, and freezing at important parts. (co-pilot in original fligh was male). That's just typical Bollywood misogyny though.

Lost opportunities : The airline's lawyer, the owner, the owner of another airline. All shown to be strong characters without any impact on the plot.

So...overall a wasted opportunity that fails to be anything. Not entertaining. Not informative. And not mysterious.

I was super excited for this movie because of the excellent star cast and it totally lived upto my expectations!

Ajay Devgan has done a tremendous job and so has Amit ji, as you would expect. It's a great thriller (won't give spoilers) and will keep you glued to your seat till the end!

Watched a movie after 2 years in a theatre and was absolutely worth it! Great production and viduals! Must watch!

Why should it always be the pilot's fault
beevenkat30 April 2022
You are a gifted pilot, on a plane from dubai to cochin. You are weary and homesick, the weather is ruthless, visibility is poor and fuel is scarce. Yet you manage to save the lives of 150 people. So why are you being systematically interrogated as if you are an offender? Why should it always be the pilot's fault, if things go awry? Amitabh Bachchan and Ajay Devgn are excellent in #Runway34. Running time needs to be reduced by 15 minutes. Rating 3/5.

Not good but....
It is my deepest request and prayer for bollywood to stop copying Hollywood movies. This movie is absolutely plagiarised, it has parts of Movie "FLIGHT" and also some parts of "SULLY", i even felt few over dramatic scene from SNAKES OF A PLANE.

So its a copy, that settles that but then again you can always make a good copy but this copy wasn't even that good. Apart from Mr Bachan's Acting which was also not necessary, everything was so fake.

And what about that attitude shown by CAPTAIN in the movie, i mean that wasn't needed to a level that it feels rudeness.

MAKE YOUR OWN CONTENT, STOP PLAGIARISING.

Excellent Story, Performance & Direction
rajnnair27 June 2022
I was amazed to see an Indian version on the lines of Sully. Its not something i have seen in Indian Cinema but Ajay Devgan carries it off and the end result is top class.

Loosely based on what happened during the Doha Kochi JetAirways flight, the story is to the pint and keeps you hooked till the end.

The first half focusses on the flight, the VFX is first rate.

The 2nd half is the enquiry and Ajay & Amitabh keeps you hooked with some amazing performances.

There is not much to do for the others though.

Amitabh is as usual mesmerizing from the time he is on screen and gives another fantastic performance.

Ajay devgan does an excellent Job with his performance both on and off the screen.

Ajay Devgn for the first impresses as a Director
indiansmark29 April 2022
Ever Since the release of Singham, except for Rascals & RRR, I have seen all the films that have starred Ajay Devgn. But after Singham's release there has been a decline in the quality of films, with a few exception like Tanhaji, Raid & De De Pyaar De, that the actor has acted in. In terms of qualitative films the actor is getting back into the groove.

Coming to the direction Back in 2016, i was awaiting for the release of Shivaay, but to my disappointment, it turned out to be too confusing as well as unrealistic. One would have similar apprehension if one would have compared Runway 34 with it. Surprisingly with Runway 34 the director in Ajay Devgn has directed quite a superior film which is on par with the top directors of Hindi film industry. In fact i would eager to watch more films directed by him in the future.

In Terms of Performance, Ajay Devgn and Amitabh Bachchan, the veteran stood tall, with their performance. While the supporting actors enacted their parts well.

In terms of story, The excitement shown in the first half could have been matched in the 2nd half if they had trimmed some scenes. Otherwise it can be ranked as one of the best thriller movies of the recent times.

When will Bollywood stop dramatizing everything
madhujith18 July 2022
Bollywood and the art of succinct story telling...I think this will be an eternal oxymoron!

A movie that could have been so powerful with half the running time, got dragged along with melodrama and some pretty average acting and story telling.....

Very disappointed....

****An Aviation joke****
sagar_can29 April 2022
The film makers have no idea of aviation industry. They should've atleast followed closely one episode of Air Crash Investigation to get some information how an Air Crash Investigation works.

The movie is simply absurd. Bollywood is way behind in Aviation movies. All actors played lazy roles. Rakul preet is only taken to cry.

Visuals effects are little better but not as good as Hollywood or Korean movies.

Movie also show many scene stolen from movie Flight by Denzel Washington.

Overall, could be used for a 1 time watch.

Movies For The Audience Of High Class Multiplex Cinema Hall. Not For The Masses
shahedshanto30 April 2022
The movie is a suspense thriller movie. The story and screenplay are very good. There is no such thing as a boring scene. Ajay Devgn's acting and his direction is very good. There is no good music or background music in this movie. This movie is usually for high class viewers. The general public will not like this movie.
