More entertaining than I thought,
victima_necessarius23 March 2010
I must be honest first off, I love horror movies and since it is cheap to make them and usually profitable - especially with small budgets - there has always been a huge influx of direct to video horror movies, with varying results. I am familiar with "B" and "D" horror films and this movie isn't that bad. Its not amazing, in some places the production is very weak. But the dialogue is witty and sometimes just south of brilliant. In the zombie genre which is completely flooded with all kinds of trash this is the kind of movie for people who like zombie movies. What particularly stands out about this film is its tongue and cheek sense of humour, and commentary on small town prejudice in the new millennium. Its not gut busting, laugh out loud funny, but I did get a few chuckles. Its not at all frightening and anyone familiar with low budget zombie movies will not see anything new in terms of effects shots and gore. But there are worse ways to spend 90 minutes. There are a few alternatives to familiar clichés and that originality is why I enjoyed this film.

A potentially great old school zombie movie with a clever twist that is squandered by shoddy production values.

A potentially great old school zombie movie with a clever twist that is squandered by shoddy production values.

I saw the trailer for this film and I was absolutely stoked. An old-school Romero-esquire zombie movie blended with comedy and satire sounded like a sure thing. With the success of other zomedies like Shaun of the Dead, Dead and Breakfast and ZOmbieland, there's no reason why this should have failed, but sadly it does... to some degree at least.

It's got it a decent amount of laughs and gore scenes. It's post-911 terrorism paranoia twist works excellently and is so refreshing for a genre that is getting stale.

The film just isn't any good on a technical standpoint. The editing is really bizarre and during some of the intense scenes, everything looks warped and choppy. Poor editing aside, the worst thing is the horrendously bad sound design. Everything sounds awful. Everything. When anybody raise there voices, the levels peak and the quality is distorted. this combined with the poor editing makes any sort of action scene almost unbearable to watch.

A really good idea and a good attempt but next time, more talent and experience might produce a better movie.

A good non-Hollywood zombie comedy
Sabalon24 March 2010
I didn't know what to expect going into this other than Zombies. I was really surprised. A lot of people have compared it to Shaun of the Dead, and there is some definite homage there. No offense to the actors in this, but they just aren't Simon Pegg. There are really no scares that I remember, but the effects themselves are not that bad (remember - non Hollywood!) I really laughed a lot at this flick. Some of it was at corniness, some was some good humor. At one point I did think that this would be a good candidate for an (over the top) Americanized version of Shaun of the Dead. It really picks on so many aspects of culture.

The lead actress really did a good job, as did the two playing Lance and Tom. I think "Lance" gets some of the best lines and has some good comedic timing.

As long as you don't mind a little poking fun at yourself and are not looking for the next over-the-top, over-polished Hollywood turd, this is a very enjoyable movie.

People are seriously comparing this to Shaun of the dead ?
olivierlarouche716 March 2010
I have a hard time understanding how people can see this movie as anything more than mildly entertaining. I decided to watch it with high hopes as I am a big fan of the zombie genre and some reviewers compared it to Shaun of the dead and Zombieland. In my opinion however, there is no comparison, even when taking into consideration the far lower production costs of ZMD. There is no depth to any of the characters and I don't see how the acting can be viewed as anything more than up to par. The humour and satirical elements consist of easy one-liners which failed to even make me grin. I mean, come on : "Don't shoot, I'm gay". Is that even a joke ? If I was to compare this movie to anything I've seen, I might consider Zombie strippers. However, Zombie strippers, at the very least, added a new original take to the genre and there was some much appreciated subtlety to the humour in the script. Furthermore, I've seen Zombie strippers twice whereas I would never consider sitting through ZMD a second time. In all honesty, I feel generous in rating this movie with a 3/10.

Forget all other Zombie flicks...
This was one movie I wanted to watch, only because it had Russell Hodgkinson (Z Nation) as one of the main roles. Needless to say, this movie was a waste of time, talent and budget. The only other movie that seemed to be quite similar was the 2003 Aussie film, Undead, only this one was cheesy, disappointing and a complete waste of my life. If you want a move that will put you to sleep, then go ahead and watch this snoozefest.

Zombies of Mass Boredom
Ax-London24 August 2010
Warning: Spoilers
Rubbish, boring, unfunny... go somewhere else to find a zombie flick Nothing new in this film..literally nothing, I didn't know if it was meant to be a comedy as there were so few gags in the whole film (I'm being over generous there!), the zombie effects were fine but we've seen so much zombie action we need a new take on it.. as I said nothing new here Spoiler Bit There's no chance of spoiling this film as it manages all on it own, but just in case... what was the last scene about.. the speech bit by the new mayor, did we have to listen to that boring speech just in order to see the 'oh so hilarious' kids pictures, 'I miss my dad' with blood spurting out..repeated with arm missing ha ha. 'I hate Arabs' is that funny? Or did we have to listen to the speech so that we get the twist ending that there is no twist ending and the last laugh is on the film makers who got to make us watch this tripe... very poor, can wait, preferably a lifetime, for the sequel

Don't let this zombie movie pass you by!
paul_haakonsen15 March 2010
I think with a title like this "Zombies of Mass Destruction" many people are going to pass on this movie, which would be a bad thing to do. I was doubtful about the movie, just because of the name, but I decided to watch it anyway.

Alright, well this is a marvelous zombie movie, it has everything you need in a zombie movie. Lots of zombies (usually with adequate make-up, wardrobe and effects), blood and gore (though the blood in this movie was very strangely red) and of course a story that will sink its teeth in you - no pun intended.

Right from the very beginning I had a feel that this movie was going to be interesting, despite it not being a multi-million dollar Hollywood production. And right I was, oh yes! The story is very good and have a good, constant flow to it. So you are never left with a boring and dull taste in your mouth. Sure there are some points where you wonder about stuff, like how come suddenly there were so many infected people on the island. But that doesn't really bring the movie to a halt. You look past it, because the movie is that interesting.

The characters in the movie were well portrayed and likable. Some more than others, of course. I found the dialogue to be good enough. And also, I thought most of the characters in the movie were good for the story and added flavor and color to the story. The cast was, for most of the roles, very nicely cast.

The effects of the movie weren't too shabby either. Of course, they were not on Romero's level, but still they were very nice to look at and seemed real enough most of the time.

And also, if you are the type that approach movies analytically, then this movie does have some interesting things that it deals with, such as terrorism, homosexuality, religion, racism, to name some. And these elements work well in the movie. Of course, if you just watch a movie for entertainment, these still add depth to the entire movie.

Overall, I think this is one of the better "low budget" zombie movies I have seen in awhile. It would be a shame to let this one pass you by if you are a gore hound or zombie fan. Don't let the title fool you, as it almost did me.

This movie definitely gets two thumbs up - if a zombie hadn't bitten off my left thumb. This is most definitely good entertainment.

This is nothing like "Shaun of the Dead"
thompsonmk530 March 2010
Warning: Spoilers
I was actually an extra on the set of this movie, and I was pretty excited to see the final outcome. To put it simple, it was a waste of the $4 to rent it, and it is an hour and a half of my life that I will never get back. Most of the acting by the main characters is sub-par and overly dramatic. I feel there was some sort of political satire the director was trying to portray through this confusing, uninteresting storyline. It appears to be a battle of conservatism versus liberalism as expressed through not just the campaigns for mayor, but also an attempt to tie in international and gay culture tolerance. All the meanwhile random zombies are tearing off faces and taking over the town. Even a dinner with mom turns into slapstick gay humor when her son attempts to come out to her and she turns into a zombie. From there the remainder of the scene is the gay son and his partner trying to figure out what to do with her as she hangs on the wall with a fireplace iron through her torso.

I don't understand the reference to "Shaun of the Dead", as this movie does not seem humorous at all. It seems that the director attempted to make a serious political message within the context of the movie and failed miserably. So, to counter this, the producer has no choice but to try and sell it as comedy. In reality, the only thing funny about this movie is the laugh you will get at just how horrible this movie is and how you can not believe you actually spent money on it at all.

Unfunny and boring
sebpopcorn19 September 2010
This film reminded me of a George Romero zombie movie, no not the good old ones I mean the crappy modern ones where he tries to shoehorn in some political commentary and it just doesn't work. Billed as a political zombie comedy it fails on all three levels.

Politics? Well, it mentions politics but has nothing to say about it really. It's just there.

Zombies? This isn't too bad, there's some good scenes of zombie action but they are spaced too far apart and the gaps are filled with boring scenes.

Comedy? It's just not funny, at all. It thinks it is, but it isn't.

I wouldn't waste your time, nothing happens for 30 minutes and the zombie bits are only slightly better than a cheap 80's Italian zombie flick. Rent one of those instead it's got more laughs (unintentional) and will probably have a lot more action. None of the characters have stories that lead anywhere which must surely be indicative of one hell of a crappy piece of fiction to even the least discerning viewer.

Shaun of the dead? No. But not a bad attempt
This film offers no real surprises.

Thats pretty much this movie in a nut shell. Its your typical zombie fare with just a few extra political and social themes thrown in to try and give you characters that aren't the norm for this kind of flick.

The plot is kept simple, in this film, the zombie virus is used by terrorists as a biological weapon (I know, its the animated Resident Evil plot. Just go with it) Stupidly, its unleashed on a small ISLAND community... Isn't that kinda the worst possible place for this kind of thing? If you wanted to kill a lot of people, wouldn't you release it on the mainland or a major city so it can spread? Anyway, I digress.

The meat of the film is nothing special, typical zombie outbreak with a few gay jokes thrown in to give the slower members of the audience a giggle. But this film does deliver where its needed, its a true B movie, with ridiculous and one dimensional antagonists. Along with main characters who were clearly written with the thought "How can we get the most puns out of these guys?"

Really, the true and honest glory of this film comes towards the end, when one of the cardboard villains mentioned above (I won't spoil who) gets attacked by a zombie, who rips his arm off and proceeds to beat him to death with it. I kid you not, I watched that scene at least 4 times.

I wouldn't say that this is a zombie flick that you HAVE to see. But you could definitely do worse. It knows what it is, and sticks to just how corny the writing is and delivers what anyone with brain would expect from a film with this kind of budget. Go watch it, but don't expect to fall in love with it.

Zombies, Politics, and low budget makes for a bad combination
skerman00719 October 2010
First off I'd like to address the audio issue, whoever mastered this needs to learn that when something is only 20ft away is doesn't need a second worth of reverb this caused pretty much any noise off screen to sound incredibly awful. This is something that shouldn't be a problem even in a low budget film it would've been better off with no processing.

As for the zombie scenes I was actually surprised at the quality of makeup and acting during these scenes, some of the effects were noticeably low budget but overall quite impressive for what they had to work with, there was a lot of camera cuts which seemed a little over done.

In the political sense it addressed several issues touching on homosexuality, religion, mayoral office, and the middle east. it did seem to overemphasize them but perhaps that was the point. I only had a problem with how they were trying to make a point it detracted from the flow of the movie, there would be one scene where they're fighting zombies and then the entire mood changes to make political point it seemed like the writer wrote a political movie then an editor came along and said what do you think of adding zombies. The scenes didn't mesh together and felt forced.

The cast seemed a good fit for the characters they played, however the acting was definitely B-film quality I'd say the gay couple and the Iranian girl were by far the best actors/actress of the film. The Iranian father's actions and lines seemed rehearsed and forced. The zombies seemed as you would imagine from most zombie movies slow, stupid and bloodthirsty.

In conclusion a Zombies of Mass Destruction is a zombie film crashed into a political movie and didn't have any insurance to fund the collision repair, which makes for decent zombie killing action mixed with b-c class acting and interruptions of over-exaggerated political views, when I say interruptions I mean it takes on the mood of an entirely different movie.

Everything a Zombie Movie Should Be
heszyfilm2 June 2009
I just got back from seeing this movie at the Seattle International Film Festival and must say I thoroughly enjoyed it. The movie had just the right balance of comic elements, gore, good consistent pacing, and bouts of scariness. There was an occasion or two where the movie almost veered into more serious violence, but nothing that spoiled the overall fun-horror mood. Once the zombies start making their appearance, the movie just doesn't stop giving the viewer laughs, chills, and a constantly advancing story. The acting was very good, especially from the female lead. And the story actually made sense within its own context; I get tired of those who think a zombie movie doesn't really have to have a storyline that makes sense. Great light-hearted fun!

Good enough to watch.
Boba_Fett11381 May 2010
Well, if you are into the genre there basically is no reason why you shouldn't watch this movie. It's definitely better than the average low-budget zombie-flick.

But this obviously is not a movie without it flaws. I can tell what this movie tried to achieve and how but I can't exactly say that they succeeded with it. They tried to make this a comedy, more than a straight-forward gory shocker, which is in my opinion also the right direction to head in when you have such a small budget to spend. No way people are going to take your movie serious when you are trying to create a creepy, realistic and shocking horror movie with zombies in it when you only have a couple of thousands of dollars to spend. This movie seems to realize that and it doesn't take itself too seriously. It makes the movie entertaining but I wish I could also say that it works out for the best of the movie. Problem is that the writing just isn't very clever or funny.

The movie of course has a very simply concept and a standard main premise of a small town being overrun by a sudden zombie plague. They tried spicing things up by adding in some quirky characters, that are however doing such unlikely things in the movie that they rather work out as stupid than funny really. Their responses to all of the situations don't even work out in a comical way, though you can tell that they were really supposed to. One persons mother gets turned into a zombie, another person sees her boyfriend being teared up and eaten alive, another one looses both parents but they all seem to be cool with that and don't seem to be too worried about the whole situation. And this is not spoiling much really, since none of it seems relevant for the movie its story or any of its characters at all.

What the movie also tried to add in was some social satire. The Iraq war and gays are the two elements that the writers decided to write a social commentary around. But again, the writing just isn't very clever or witty so it all falls kind of flat and just doesn't seem to add enough. It certainly doesn't make the movie any more believable to watch and rather makes it more silly, in a bad way, instead.

But oh well, if you are into this genre there really certainly are far more worse movies to watch. At least this movie was still good looking with its visual style and didn't seem all that cheap, though no doubt that this was a cheap movie to make. It has some good gore, that is mostly being used for its comical effect though. It therefore shouldn't shock anyone too much, most definitely not the most hardened genre fans. For this sort of movie it also definitely featured some good acting, which is all the more an accomplishment due to its simplistic script and dialog and the fact that basically all actors in this movie had never appeared in anything else before.

It's not a great or even funny movie to watch but nevertheless the movie remains entertaining throughout.

Mass Destruction of Low Budget Zombie Movie
fatt198816 December 2011
Don't get me wrong with my summary. What I mean with the mass destruction is that; this movie shows that a low budget movie could be way better without a cheap nudity, sex and other ridiculous stuff that are infecting most of low budget zombie/horror/thriller movies out there. Of course there is a few things that make this film incomparable with Shaun of The Dead, Dawn of The Dead or other great zombie movies but for a low budget movie; this is good. This movie is not stereotypical as many. There is no hero and heroine that in the end live happily ever after. What they have in this movie is issues with politics, racism, sexual heretic(gay), and a few other things. In spite of that, there are some weak point in this movie. The script could be better and more comical since people tend to laugh to the silly script not the comedy itself in this film. The filmmaker seems to cling with the cliché act of many zombie movies where someone's arm being pulled-off so easily(which is silly). Without such scene, this movie could be better. Well, this movie is worth to watch but never expect it to be that perfect.

Just a Mess
thewillt0822 December 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Zombies of Mass Destruction is possibly the worst movie I have ever seen. I'm not sure if it was supposed to be a "B" Sci-Fi channel movie but it wasn't even that good. There was really no plot, no point, poorly developed characters, and just an overall bad attempt at a movie. Don't ever watch this movie unless you want to laugh at a poor excuse for anything. I literally felt like I was watching a soap opera with zombies. I will tell you right now, Zombies of Mass Destruction gets the WillyT Seal of DISapproval.

There really is no story so I will just rant and talk about what was wrong with this movie. A gay man and his boyfriend go to his mother's house to come out of the closet. He tries to find the words and when he finally does his mother is already a zombie. How was this possible? There was no zombie to begin within the house. And if a zombie did take a bite out of her why would it just leave? Wouldn't it just finish the job? This movie just makes no sense at all. The son ends up pinning her up against the wall. She escapes, of course, and the two decide to make a run for it. One grabs a weed whacker and just goes to town. A young woman comes home and she is Iranian, I think, and her neighbors are racist white trash. She goes on a date with some guy and he ends up being the first one bitten. "It's my blood." He screams as he bleeds out. I lost it. It was too funny. This has to be the worst special effects I have ever seen in a zombie movie. The movie itself starts with a blind man poking around and he stumbles upon a zombie and he inevitably gets eaten. It was the stupidest beginning to a movie. I'm not going to lie. I turned this movie off. After the girl goes into the basement with the white trash family, the wife gets bitten, and on the news we find out that the zombie attack is because of Iraq. That's right, Iraq has the ability to create the walking dead and they attack the United States. The family ties the girl up and the last thing I see if her father running around with a shotgun looking for his daughter. Now, the one good thing I will say about this movie is that it is so bad, it's almost good. I can't really say that without laughing but throughout this movie I laughed a lot. Was I supposed to, I have no idea but I did. The crazy father disapproves of his daughter's boyfriend and when he sees him on the street as a zombie, he blows his head off with a shotgun. That is where I lost control and could not put up with this disaster anymore. Never watch this movie. Not even if you are drunk or higher than a kite. I'm not even sure if this movie is real.

Fails at about everything it attempts but I have seen far worse.
Engelhast28 March 2010
I went in not knowing ANYTHING about ZMD other than it was a Zombie / Comedy. It really does nothing in the Zombie genera that you have not seen before and the comedy and attempts at political satire pretty much always fell flat on their undead faces. There were a couple of good gore and gags moments that made me grin a little but most of the humor left me rolling my eyes. The kind of wit and social satire the writer of ZMD seemed to be going for in this is a fine line to walk on and they only managed to touch their toes to that line a few brief times. The script is not as smart or in tune with pop culture and current events as it tries to be which is sad because there is a good idea in there waiting to be made into a movie. I don't see how anyone could think ZMD can stand up next to movies like Sean of the Dead or Zombieland which both had shining and brilliant performances and a scripts written by people that know and actually understand comedy. Anyone that can't see the difference are themselves mindless zombies.

That said I did not hate ZMD but lets be realistic people…it is pretty low on the zombie food chain and I doubt I'll reanimate it's rotten corpse on my TV screen anytime soon.

Save your yourself the 'horror'
sam_guy_sam27 May 2012
One of the worst movies i have ever seen, how can they even call it a movie. not to forget one of the most racist crap out there,

Talking about the story, which didn't even existed, they don't tell you how it got started, what happened and how it ended 29 weeks later,

its a shame to the zombie genre, horror genre and the horror comedy genre.

Not even a good kill to show for all the money that went down the drain on this thing.

Even porn movies have better stories.

Those who have already seen this thing, my condolences,

those who haven't stay away,

save your money and save your time.

Why you should and shouldn't see Zombies of Mass Destruction
glenjordanspangler3 October 2011
ZMD is interesting if not scary, and amusing if not laugh-out-loud funny. Kevin Hamedani makes some valid points for the Progressive, tolerant viewpoint, while other points are made less persuasive by the cartoonish exaggeration of Conservative stupidity.

There are several shots where the side of a zombie's head is blown away, and I'm not sure how Hamedani and crew did those so well, given the obviously low budget. There's also an eye that pops out fairly well. On the other (severed) hand, each time a face, or portions thereof, is ripped off, the results look more like a face beneath layers of strawberry jam than a skull that's missing part of its cozy.

Armand, however, has screen presence and acting ability. The consensus on the message board of her IMDb page is that she is "really hot," a "babe," and has charisma, provided that "charisma is a code word for hotness."

Why you should see it You feel that any self-respecting zombie connoisseur must see all available zombie movies, in order to name, with some authority, both the "best zombie movie ever" and the "worst zombie movie ever." You're a Progressive who loves to see Conservatives made to look foolish and then devoured. You want to see a hot babe shoot zombies in the head.

Why you shouldn't see it You're a Conservative. You're more into vampires. You're sensitive on the subject of cannibalism, given the awkward events of this year's family reunion.

A funny zombie flick that could have been perfect with tighter editing.
anguspage1229 April 2010
ZMD is about an Iranian-American girl named Frida, who is always thought of as being iraqie and who is being forced a deli job by her dad. Also, you have Tom, who comes back to Port Gamble (the conservative setting for the film) to tell his mother that he is gay. Then, all of a sudden, a zombie outbreak occurs! And those three people have to fend off the zombie apocalypse while trying to get out of Port Gamble.

The greatest thing about ZMD is it's comedy. The director and writer, Kevin Hamedani, is great at comedy and shows it well through the political satire in the film. There are great jokes in this film, like jokes about gays, Iranian culture, American culture, religion, rights, and, of course, zombies.

The biggest complaint is that the film does get a bit TOO preachy. There is a preacher in this who believes that he can cure homosexuality. And this would be a good minor joke for the film IF they played it that way. But the film overplays the joke too much. Also, the acting does get a bit cheesy at times (even though it maybe the film's intent).

But, if you love zombies and if you love political satire, ZMD is the film for you. It's a funny, smart, and overall fun time. I suggest you watch this film with a group of friends, because this is a great film to hang out and have fun with. And that's how I think the After Dark Horrorfest is supposed to be about: to watch these films with a bunch of friends. Sure, some of them aren't always fun, but they're a good time. Like this film.

Romero's School for Dummies: Zombie film-making 101
Coventry20 April 2010
In the past ten years or so, we've been served more lame and pseudo- original zombie movies than regular TV commercials, but only a very small number of them are actually worth watching. Just to think that this "Zombies of Mass Destruction" is quite often labeled as the best zombie film since "Shaun of the Dead" is totally preposterous. This particular so-called "zomedy" (zombie-comedy … they're so copious they even have an own slang name) nearly isn't as funny or clever as it aims to be. In fact, you can't even compare this movie with "Shaun of the Dead". Writer/director Kevin Hamedani is obviously a fanatic admirer of George A. Romero and desperately dreams of impersonating him. I bet Hamedami watched Romero's classic zombie films countless of times and based his screenplay on those viewings. The only thing he hasn't studied profoundly enough in the Romero film, however, is the art of subtlety. "ZMB" is an outrageous and often offensive denouncement of homophobia, xenophobia, post 9/11 paranoia and lower social class persuasions. When the small fisherman island town of Port Gamble is suddenly overrun with flesh-eating zombies, the self-centered community members immediately blame it on Al-Quada. Logical, of course, because the daughter of the Iranian restaurant owner just returned to town and during her absence she probably attended some sort of Arab school for new terrorist attack methods. Another explanation for the zombie outbreak might be the visit of the homosexual Tom to his mother. He lives together with his boyfriend in New York and they probably brought all sorts of filthy diseases along to the peaceful island with them. As you can tell, the social criticism and metaphors are not exactly what we call delicate or sophisticated, so I guess Hamedani didn't understood George A. Romero's modus operandi after all. On top of having to deal with the embarrassing and not at all funny script, "ZMB" is also inexplicably dull and derivative. Instead of the supposedly entertaining gay and racial slur, Hamedani should have put some more effort in creative zombie kills and/or make-up effects. Undoubtedly this movie will have its share of enthusiast fans, but basically "ZMB" is a substantially void and grotesque imitation of the almighty George A. Romero.

Very enjoyable B-movie
stianchrister16 June 2011
This is your typical zombie film, but compared to a lot of other zombie films, I would have to say that this one really stands out from the hordes (pun intended).

The basic premise of the story is something like this: A woman running for mayor, a homosexual couple trying to come out of the closet, a father and daughter from Iran (not Iraq) come together with a band of religious folk during a zombie outbreak. There's a lot of room for hilarity, and a lot of room to send a message in this basic premise. Of course, it never really gets there, but it does play with the possibilities. In many ways, the film kind of leaves me with blue balls, because I really felt upon watching it, that this could be awesome. It could've turned out to be extremely funny, and a zombie classic to stand right up there alongside Shaun of the Dead. Sadly, that is not the case, as the film simply doesn't go as far as it could've gone.

One of the biggest pluses is that the characters are extremely well-written, and come across as pretty nice people. In fact, one of the biggest pitfalls of B-movies is that the characters don't seem like real people, but rather machines to be put out for torture. These characters actually seem like people, and that's a massive plus.

In terms of the cinematography, this film looks pretty good. If you're expecting 28 Days Later, Dawn of the Dead remake-like blood, guts and gore, you'll be disappointed. There are some special effects, but there aren't a ton of them. I don't think they had the budget to make the special effects a huge thing, but I certainly do think that with the budget they had, this film looks pretty damn sweet. Good cinematography, good editing - overall pretty well done technically.

All in all, it's a film with great potential that doesn't quite live up to its potential. The story could've used some tightening up, and if they really tightened up the script and got a stronger theme out of it, this film could've been a low budget classic.

Showed great promise, but it was pretty lame in the end
siderite26 July 2010
A movie about a small town during a zombie outbreak is turned into a comedy when people, convinced it was a terrorist attack, start showing their ugly sides: homophobia, ignorance, blood lust, right wing politics, liberal politics, any politics, etc.

This could have been a really cool movie. It was obviously low budget, with bad acting on top, but that hasn't stopped others. The problem lies in the plot. When it's ironic, it's not funny; when it's bloody, it's not scary; when it shows the stupidity of small town folk, it's so exaggerated that it cycles between scary and gross. There were some funny ideas there: the Iranian family that is always mistaken for Iraqi, just because that's what's most on the news, or some of the gay antics of the two New Yorkers returned to come out to the mother of one of them, but now I am really trying to find more funny moments and I can't.

Bottom line: this is one of those movies that show the power of a good title. Who could resist a movie called Zombies of Mass Destruction? It's such a powerful title that a second part is in production for 2011. The movie though, it really was lame and failed in any direction worth exploring. Similar to some of those murderous inbred family movies where you get to see a lot of rednecks acting badly instead of true horror, it was just a waste of time.

ZMD - Funnier than eating your own eyeball

Warning: Spoilers
A great movie, great gore, great characters. Especially if you love Zombie movies.

Gore a zombie aficionado would appreciate. Special effects have gone a long way. first time I've seen entire half of someone's face get blown off and completely believe it. One character gets the skin ripped off his face(somehow really funny) and a couple non-zombies get killed in ways that surprise you so much you laugh out loud then feel really guilty for it. The jokes were hitting left and right and it got a deserved round of applause from the audience. The reason why zombie movies are so great is the interaction of the living characters but this one had the deeper, socio-political stuff I haven't seen since Night of the living dead original. Some, and I stress SOME of the jokes landed flat because a couple characters were over the top. I'm surprised this is a festival movie. Great stuff. A cult classic for sure.

Overall a very enjoyable film

Warning: Spoilers
I found it very slow in starting the Zombie killing aspect that you would find with other Zombie Movies, however i did like the fact that we got to know about the individual characters before. As mentioned in a previous Review could be said like an American Version of Shaun of the Dead, however does not have the comical or cast side for it. One thing i did not like was the constant suggestion of Muslin or Islamic ethnic being behind this as there was no direct evidence of it even though stating that an Islamic Extremist suggested something over a year before, i really felt that this downgraded the movie a lot because of this suggestion. There was some funny parts within the film if not predicable especially the young lady with car. There was parts within then film that made no sense and characters within the film that never seemed to be long according to the way the script was laid out.

Overall though was enjoyable but feel that the constant innuendo's's and suggestions of Muslin and Homosexuallity actually ruined what could have been an enjoyable Zombie Movie (Not George Romeo) but close to it..

Save It For A Rainy Day...

I really love Zombie movies which is why i though this would be a great movie.

I was WRONG! I won't deny that there are some classic moments in this movie but only in context.

The writing is weak and the effects are hilariously bad! Save this movie for when you are drunk, really bored, or having a B movie party!

Obviously the writers of this movie had some opinions about the war in Iraq, gay conversions, terrorists, and an assortment of American ideals.

Seriously, can you expect people to take your inspirational speeches about national pride and community solidarity after a zombie eats their own eyeball?!
